Winning is becoming contagious in San Francisco
2008-06-06 20:00:00 POINTSHAVERS.COM 06/07/08 - The San Francisco Giants have been quietly improving their play over the last several weeks. It all started when Barry Zito got his first win after stumbling out to an 0-8 start. Then, Giants hitting started to come around and road wins became easier to come by.But the key to the Giants success so far this season has been the outstanding pitching of Scott Linecum (8-1 W-L, 2.15 ERA). The Giants have rallied around their young star all year long; and, just yesterday Linecum and the Giants destoyed the Nationals 10-1.Today, LHP Jonathan Sanchez (4.08 ERA, 4-3 W-L) gets a crack at the cold Nationals and RHP Shawn Hill (0-2 W-L 4.67 ERA). It's surprising that the Giants are coming into this game as underdogs. I don't know if anyone is falling for the Nationals as a home favorite this time.Take San Francisco Gians (+110) vs Washington Nationals More About: Winning
NBA Must Extend Lakers vs Celtics To Six Or Seven Games
2008-06-04 20:00:00 06/5/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - We have been following the NBA closely for some time; for obvious reasons (fixed games, pointshaving, no-shows, DUIs, and set-ups). But tonight, Game 1 of the NBA Finals has a chance to make up for all of the bad press that the NBA has received over the last four to five years. The LA Lakers will face the Boston Celtics in the NBA finals for the first time since 1987. And the NBA is hoping that the nostalgia of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson will replace the skepticism associated with Tim Donaghy and the rest of the National Basketball Assocation.Just one year ago, the Celtics were at the bottom of the NBA Eastern Conference and the future of the LA Lakers looked turbulent after a revolt that left Kobe at the helm and former captain Shaq-Diesel a castaway at sea. However, with the cooperation of the NBA and the powers that be, the 2008 NBA finals was manufactured with a series of offseason moves that had the NBA smiling and had the rest of the league scratch... Devil Rays Edwin Jackson Will Have Trouble With Red Sox
2008-06-03 20:00:00 06/4/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - Tonight, Edwin Jackson will be throwing in a hornet's nest at Feneway when he face the red hot Red Sox -- winners of 11 straight games at Fenway Park. Luckily for Jackson, he won't have to face David Ortiz tonight. Ortiz is still on the 15-Day Disabled List with a partially torn tendon in his left wrist. Unfortunately, he still has to deal with red hot Manny Ramirez who finally got his 500th homer off of the Baltimore Orioles several days ago. With the load off of his shoulders, Ramirez has nothing to focus on besides playing great baseball. To make matters worse, Jackson will be facing Red Sox ace Josh Beckett tonight. Beckett (5-4 W-L, 4.30 ERA) is undefeated at Fenway Park this year; and, the Red Sox have scored 27 runs in those three games that Becket has won. Jackson (3-4 W-L, 3.70 ERA) is coming off of a dissapointing game against the White Sox where he gave up a season high 10 hits and 4 runs to the White Sox en route to a 5-1 loss to the W... SteinBrenner & Co. are demanding run support for Chamberlain's debut
2008-06-02 20:00:00 06/3/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - Tonight, Joba Chamberlain will be making his major league debut as the starting pitcher for the NY Yankees. He'll be facing Roy Halladay and the Toronto Blue Jays, losers of two straight to the LA Angels.Yankee Nation has been clamoring for Joba to leave the bullpen and make an appearance in the starting rotation. And with all of the problems with Yankee pitching, it's not surprising to see the Yankees making this move so early in the season. This game will be recieving an extraordinary amount of media attention in the NY area; and local media coverage will be similar to that of an American League Playoff game. However, the Blue Jays are sure to see this as just another game in the 162-game schedule. Therefore, it may be difficult for the Blue Jays to match the Yankees intensity tonight...especially in Yankee stadium. We only have a little bit of inside info for tonight. Apparently Hank Steinbrenner from Yankee front office made it known that he wan... More About: Support , Debut
Breaking News: Retired Catcher Could Help Brewers Win Big Tonight!!!
2008-06-01 20:00:00 06/2/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - Tonight , former Brewers catcher Damian Miller may provide Milwaukee hitters with inside information on Diamondbacks pitching in order to keep their winning streak alive.Yesterday, the Brewers finished off the Astros 10-1 for a three-game-sweep of the Houston Astros. A big key to Milaukee's success as of late has been great pitching; however, the Brewers' outstanding performace at the plate over the last several days has taken the entire league by suprise. The Brewers outscored Lance Berkman the hard hitting Astros 19-3 in the threee-game-series. However, in Milwaukee's previous 3-game-homestand against the Braves, the Brewers put up just 3 runs in 3 games. The Diamondbacks come into this game with some great momentum after shutting out the Nationals in two consecutive games (4-0 and 5-0). Arizona got some great pitching from their ace Brandon Webb and former Oakland starter Dan Haren. Tonight, former Milwuakee Brewers starter Doug Davis (2-2 W-L... NY Yankees On "Cruise Control" In Minnesota
2008-05-30 20:00:00 05/31/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - The NY Yankees should breeze through nine innings tonight against the Minnesota Twins. The Yankees are sending their ace Chien-Ming Wang (6-2 W-L, 3.82 ERA) to the mound to face struggling Twins pitcher Boof Bonser (2-6 W-L, 6.16 ERA).In his short pitching career Bonser has struggled mightily against the Yankees. Bonser is 0-2 with a 9.31 ERA against the Yankees in two starts. In those two games, the Twins were outscored 12-2. On the other hand, Wang is 2-0 lifetime against the Twins with a 1.71 ERA.There is some chatter going around in the Twins clubhouse that suggests that Bonser may be on his way out of the starting rotation after getting DESTROYED by the Detroit Tigers. Bonser gave up a career high 9 runs and 7 hits in a 19-3 loss to Detroit last week. Here at PointShavers.com, we have information that leads us to believe that Bonser is getting set-up for the fall today. The Twins want him out of the starting lineup and tonight's game is a perfect ... More About: Control , Cruise
Spurs vs Lakers Game 5: "Not So Fast My Friend"
2008-05-28 20:00:00 05/29/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - The San Antonio Spurs may be down; but, they are definitely not out. Not just yet. Tonight, the Spurs will travel to the Los Angeles Staples Center to face the Lakers in a must-win Game 5 of the NBA Western Conference Finals. Two days ago, Game 4 was decided in the closing seconds by a controversial no-call by NBA referee Joey Crawford. Laker (G) Derick Fisher made contact with Spurs (G) Brent Barry during Barry's attempt at a game winnning 3-point shot with only 3 seconds left in the game. If the refs blow the whistle, Brent Barry gets three free throws to win the game for the Spurs and even the series at 2-2. So obviously Coach Poppovich and the San Antonio Spurs will be a little bit testy when the the game tips off tonight at 9:00 PM EST.The Lakers can win the series tonight and get almost a week of rest while they await the winner of the Celtics-Pistons series whcih may go to seven games. Needless to say, a week of rest heading into the NBA Fin... More About: Friend , Fast
Orioles looking to steal Game 2 from Yankees at Camden Yards
2008-05-26 20:00:00 05/27/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - Today's free pick come from Camden Yards were the Baltimore Orioles will face the NY Yankees in Game 2 of a 3-game series. In Game 1, the Orioles took advantage of Yankees relief pitching as they broke a 0-0 tie in the 7th inning and scored six consecutive runs to beat the Yankees 6-1 behind starting pitcher Greg Olson.Today, the Orioles will be starting Brian Burress (4-4 W-L, 3.16 ERA). In his last appearance against the Yankees at Yankee stadium, Burres pitched for 7 innings and allowed only 1 earned run.The Orioles will be facing Yankees pitcher Ian Kennedy (0-3 W-L, 7.27 ERA). Lately Kennedy's pitching has been much better than his numbers indicated. In his last outing he pitched his best game of the year allowing only 1 earned run to the Orioles in 6 innings of play.We expect Kennedy will have a much tougher time at Camden Yards today. It's hard to explain, but the Orioles are just a better team at home. This year the Orioles are 15-7 at... More About: Steal
Braves seem to have Mets number at Turner Field....
2008-05-20 20:00:00 05/21/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - This year, the NY Mets have not been able to steal a victory from the Braves at Turner Field . At home, the Braves have destroyed the Mets by a combined score of 26 to 11.Today, the Braves won't make it any easier on the Mets as they will send RHP Jair Jurrjens (4-3 W-L, 2.82 ERA) to the mound. Jurrjens has already beaten the Mets at Shea Stadium earlier this year winning 6-3.The Mets will be starting RHP Mike Pelfrey (2-4 W-L, 4.17 ERA). Pelfrey has pitched against the Braves once this year; and it was a game he'd like to forget. Pelfrey allowed 9 Hits, 5 Earned Runs, and 4 Walks en route to a 6-3 loss at Turner Field. Unfortunately, Pelfrey will have to re-live his pitching nightmare all over again this afternoon. The Mets just seem to be disinterested on the field at times this year. Their offense is typically characterized by one or two big innings per game followed by 6 to 7 scoreless ones. A couple of days ago, the Mets seemed to be headed in ... More About: Number
D-Backs Pitcher Micah Owings Is Looking To Go Deep!!!
2008-05-19 20:00:00 05/20/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - The Arizona DiamondBacks pitching staff has really taken on a personality all of its own. Leading the way is ace pitcher slash homerun king Micah Owings . This year, Owings (5-1 W-L, 3.91 ERA) has pitched very well; but the really cool part about Micah's game is his uncanny ability to hit homeruns as a starting pitcher in the National League. So far, so good. Owings is batting .357 (10-for-28) with one homer. It is not uncommon to see pitchers hit the ball well in the National League. However, what makes Owings so special is that he has been occasionally used in a pinch hitting situations for the D-Backs. Not many managers have this much confidence in their pitcher's hitting ability -- the only other example that comes to mind is Carlos Zambrano of the Chicago Cubs.Owings will be taking the mound tomorrow against Mark Hendrickson (5-2 W-L, 3.91 ERA) and the first place Florida Marlins. That's right, the Marlins are currently in first place in th... More About: Deep , Pitcher
Today Nationals Return to Familiar Role As Home Spoilers
2008-05-18 20:00:00 05/19/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - The Washington Nationals have a chance to get another home win against the Philadelphia Phillies today behind their ace Tim Redding. The Nationals just defeated the Orioles yesterday 2-1 in a game that was filled with rain delays. Today in Philadelphia, the weather won't be the problem; however, the Phillies may have a problem keeping the Nationals off the scoreboard with Brett Myers (2-4 W-L, 5.91 ERA) on the mound today. The Nationals should hit the ball well this evening; and, they seem to win games in spurts. We think that the Orioles game will get Washington off to a good start at home; and, having Tim Redding (5-3, 3.55 ERA) on the mound certainly doesn't hurt their cause. On the other hand, Philadelphia just lost to the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday. The loss cost the Phillies the win and the series. The Phillies seem to be hitting the ball better; however, bad defense and bad pitching seem to be their weak points. In addition, the Phillies are... More About: Home , Return , Role , Spoilers
D-Backs Look To Ace Brandon Webb For Rockies Sweep
2008-05-14 20:00:00 05/15/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - The Arizona DiamondBacks have bounced back nicely at home after getting swept on the road by the Chicago Cubs several days ago.Tonight, they hope to complete a three game series sweep of their own against the Colorado Rockies . In the first game of the series, the DiamondBacks defeated Colorado easily 8-4. During the second game, the Rockies fell behind 4-0 to start the game but came to within one run of tying the game late -- the Rockies lost 4-3. Tonight, the Rockies may have a difficult time keeping pace with the Diamondbacks ace pitcher Brandon Webb (8-0 W-L, 2.41 ERA) getting the start. Webb looks to remain undefeated for the season when he takes the mound tonight for the D-Backs.The Rockies are countering with their ace, Aaron Cooke (6-1 W-L, 2.22 ERA). Cooke will pitch well; however, the DiamondBacks should punish Rockies relief pitching at the tail of the 3-game set. In addition, the Arizona batting order has the potential to knock out anybody who... More About: Brandon Webb , Sweep
Detroit Redwings Destroying The Competition: Stars Have No Chance!!!
2008-05-14 01:00:00 05/14/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - The Detroit Redwings have been cruising through the Stanley Cup playoffs thanks to great goaltending from Chris Osgood and unbelievable scoring from (LW) Henrik Zetterberg and (C) Paul Datsyuk. Tonight at 8:00 EST, the Redwings will try to qualify for the Stanley Cup finals with a win over the Dallas Stars .The victory would complete a second consecutive 4-0 Series-Sweep for the Redwings in this year's NHL Playoffs. The Stars looked very good against the San Jose Sharks; however, the 4 overtime Game 6 thriller in San Jose seems to have gotten the better of them.Dallas has gotten outshot, outscored, and outhustled during the last 3 games. The Stars just look slow and clumsy compared to the lightning fast Redwings. Worst yet, the Redwings potent offense has made the formerly unstoppable Stars Goalie Marty Turco look quite ordinary. Supposedly Dallas is going to play for pride tonight. I just don't think they have anything left in the tank to contend with... More About: Competition , Chance
Where My Cubs At??? HOLLAAAAAA....
2008-05-12 01:00:00 05/12/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - Today, Carlos Zambrono (5-1 W-L, 1.80 ERA) and the Chicago Cubs will face Randy Wolf (2-2 W-L, 4.14 ERA) and the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of a 3-game-series at Wrigley Field (8:05 EST). The Cubs are HOT right now. As a matter of fact, they just completed a 3-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks (formerly - the best team in baseball). Surprisingly, Chicago pitching dominated the SportsCenter highlights over the weekend during the Cubs-Diamondbacks series at Wrigley Field. Over the 3-game series, the most unexpected performance came from Ted Lilly (3-4 W-L, 5.28 ERA). Lilly pitched a 4-HIT 1-RUN masterpiece in Game 1 and had the Diamondbacks seeing DOUBLE in the 3-1 loss to the Cubs.Today, all the Cubs really need to do is show up and play baseball against the Padres. That's right...let's kill the home run derby swings and the experimental pitches. Let's just get a solid win over the worst team in baseball. Sounds easy...but sometimes thes...
Yankees Re-group Today With Rookie Sensation Phil Rasner
2008-05-10 01:00:00 05/10/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - The NY Yankees are hoping to beat the Detroit Tigers for the first time this year. They were swept by the Tigers in Yankee Stadium for the first time since 1966; and the Yankees were outscored 20-10 in three games played without Alex Rodriguez. Last night, the Yankees traveled to Detroit to open another 3 game series with the Tigers. The result this time, was much closer. The Yankees lost 6-5 after falling short in a 3-run ninth inning rally.Yankee pitching was mediocre yet again as Triple A call-up Kei Igawa lasted only three and a half innings. He allowed 6 runs on eleven hits. Unfortunately, by the time the relief pitching was able to shut down the Tiger offense, the Yankees found themselves behind, 6-1Today , another Triple A call-up takes the mound. Rookie RHP Phil Rasner will get his second start for the Yankess today. Rasner was simply magnificent in his 2008 Yankee home debut allowing only 2 earned runs and striking out 4 in an 8-2 rout of the stum... More About: Group

PointShavers.com survives!
2006-09-25 01:00:00 Miraculously, PointShave rs.com survives its first month of existence. We were looking pretty bad financially until we won the pick seven college football ticket in Tijuana, Mexico. This past Saturday we picked winners for 11/13 teams only losing on LSU and Alabama. LSU did not cover 32.5 even though they were leading 35-0 with 10 minutes left in the second quarter. Alabama was covering +13.5 all game until John Parker Wilson threw 2 interceptions in the second half, the latter returned for a Florida touchdown. On NFL games we won 6/8 going 2/2 on over/unders.
Did Vick conveniently lose games?
2006-08-16 01:00:00 FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Michael Vick ranked 25th in passing efficiency last season, sandwiched between two players who are rarely mentioned in the same breath: Josh McCown and Brooks Bollinger. A stat that's much easier to understand didn't go in Vick's favor, either -- the Falcons lost six of their last eight games and missed the playoffs, one year after reaching the NFC championship game.Vick even conceded that he didn't give his best effort in the season finale, a humiliating 44-11 loss to Carolina after the Falcons already had been eliminated from the playoffs. While he wasn't the only one who packed it in that day, the quarterback must set the tone. Vick apologized to his teammates during training camp and vowed to give an effort befitting the Superman tattoo on his hand.Courtesy ESPN.com newswire More About: Games |
