Rescue From Water
2008-04-28 02:09:00 The best technique for rescuing personnel from the water is to throw them a life preserver attached to a line. Another is to send a swimmer (rescuer) from the raft with a line attached to a flotation device that will support the rescuer's weight. This device will help conserve a rescuer's energy while recovering the survivor. The least acceptable technique is to send an attached swimmer without flotation devices to retrieve a survivor. In all cases, the rescuer wears a life preserver. A rescuer should not underestimate the strength of a panic-stricken person in the water. A careful approach can prevent injury to the rescuer. Hunting For Survival
2008-03-07 19:56:00 Excerpt from AMERICAN SURVIVAL GUIDE/DECEMBER 1991. Article by Bob Newman ...taught me an important lesson in survival hunting: Expect the unexpected, even the seemingly impossible And don't get "down in the mouth" because something didn't go as planned. Press on! Your luck will change. It's just that you have to make it change.Be An Animal - That's right. Be an animal! After all you are one. Man has been hunting for survival for eons, literally. Sure, he was a bit hairier and somewhat more attuned to his environment when he was what anthropologists call Cro-Magnon or Neanderthal He had to be in order to make it. But that doesn't mean you can't be just as adept a survivor as your forebearers. You've got what it takes to be an efficient survival hunter. You were born with it, "it" being survival instinct. We all were. What you have to do though, since man has become a creature who is what a buddy of mine calls a "slave to comfort;' is relearn what mode... More About: Survival , Hunting

Ice Fishing Survival Tips by Laura Reave
2008-02-23 13:42:00 If you ask experts when the ice is safe, they will often say, "Never!" That is because ice thickness can vary by several inches even just a few feet away. Variables include water current under the ice, schools of fish that can cause warmer water to rise, vicinity to bridges and islands, and other factors.Given that, many people have still enjoyed ice fishing for years. How can you help ensure your survival while ice fishing? Here are a few basic tips:1. Before you leave, tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return. Survival experts suggest that if you are not back by that time, the person should call for help.2. Leave your car on shore. According to safety expert Tim Smalley, 68 percent of ice fatalities in Minnesota involved a vehicle. Ice must be much thicker and more stable to support the weight of a car or truck, or even a snowmobile. 3. Make sure there are at least 4 inches of clear, solid ice, with no open water or melting ice near shore. Open water and meltin... More About: Fishing , Tips , Laura
Survival Fishing
2008-02-07 14:47:00 Survival fishing methods differ from regular fishing i.e. you might not have a rod and reel! Regular rules and regulations do not apply.Survival fishing techniques to be considered in a wilderness emergency situation are line, hook, spear, trap and net. Use whatever fishing equipment you can make work.Spend time observing where the fish go at differrent times of the day. Like most all other living creature they choose the places where they are most comfortable and where they most easily find their prey.If it's hot and the water is low, deep shaded water is probably where you should look. In cold weather you probably will find your catch in a shallow place where the sun warms the water.Line and hook, your survival fishing kit, are part of your survival kit. If not, you can improvise hooks from all kinds of materials such as safety pins, a thorn, bone and wood etc. Remember, in a situation like this, success is mostly a question of trial and error and..a lot of patience.Best time to... No. 5. -- A very Simple Way to Protect Yourself with a Hooked Walking Stick
2008-02-07 14:35:00 When carrying a hooked stick, here is a very simple way to protect yourself against the attack of an unarmed assailant.Hold your stick behind you, as seen in the first photograph, so as to run no risk of the stick-arm being seized. Bend your left arm with the inside of the left hand facing outwards in order to protect yourself from a kick at the hip, or a blow from the fist at your face or ribs.In the photographs it will be seen that the boxer has chosen the attack at his opponent's face. To meet such an attack safely, you must put your head well on ones side, and bend both your knees very considerably at the moment when the boxer leads off, so as to get well under his guard. Directly you receive the blow upon your arm, you must straighten your knees, and so throw up the boxer's arm, and make him lose his balance, which prevents him from using his right fist upon your ribs. You have now the opportunity, and plenty of time, to hook him by the ankle with your stick, as seen in the se... How to make your own survival kit
2008-02-05 14:41:00 To assemble your DIY survival kit consider the following:1. Think about skills Focus not on the components but on the tasks you’ll want them to perform. In a survival situation, you’ll need to do most of the following: build a fire, construct a shelter, get and purify drinking water, gather food, signal for help, navigate back to civilization, and administer basic first aid. Once you know what types of functions you must be prepared to carry out, you can select the proper items. 2. Pick your tools Choose at least one component from each of the groups below. Some items can meet the requirements of more than one. Fine-tune your selection to match your location or the season, and remember that you may want more than one item from certain categories. For example, I always bring at least three ways to start a fire. Fire and Light: matches, disposable lighter, flint and striker, magnesium fire starter, tinder, candle, and a magnifying lens. For the latter: flashlight,... More About: Make , Survival
Start A Fire Without Matches
2008-02-03 17:55:00 Forget about wet matches, this modern "flint and steel" kit fits on your keyring and will start a fire in no time! You never know when you'll need it! Be prepared!-----Fire Start er - Magnesium -- SteelFiresteel is a piece of high-carbon steel used for striking a spark, usually kept in a tinderbox together with flint and tinder. From the Iron Age onwards, the use of flint and steel was the most common method of fire lighting prior to the invention of the friction match.More recently the term 'firesteel' has become synonymous with so called 'artificial flints' which are metal rods of varying size composed of ferrocerium, an alloy of iron and mischmetal. Mischmetal is an alloy primarily of cerium that will generate sparks when struck. Iron is added to improve the strength of the rods. Small shavings are torn off the rod with either a supplied metal scraper, a piece of hacksaw blade, or, commonly, the back of a knife ground at a suitable angle. These shavings then ignite at high te... More About: Matches

No. 4. -- How to Use a Walking-Stick as a Weapon in a Crowd.
2008-01-22 14:38:00 It will be understood that it is quite impossible to swing a stick in a crowd, owing to want of elbow room; and so, in order to get elbow room and free scope to hit, you proceed as follows: --Hold your stick, more or less in a line with your hips, and proceed, as in the second photograph, to lunge to your left, holding the end of the stick in your right hand, and letting it slide through your left, in order to be able to guide it with certainty.Lunging at the body of the nearest man on your left, you disable him, and cause him to retreat precipitously. In doing so, he involuntarily forces back those in his immediate neighborhood. You then turn on your heels, and bayonette the nearest man on your right, this time holding the end of your stick in your left hand, and guiding it through your right. Directly you have bayonetted him, and caused him to force back others in his attempt to escape, you make a quarter turn on your heels, and bayonette the man behind you. After this, seeing anot... No. 3. -- The Best Way to Disable a Man who Tries to Rush You, and get unde
2008-01-18 22:22:00 The first photograph shows the best position to adopt in order to meet a sudden spring and prevent an assailant from seizing your stick. As a feint, you make a slightly threatening motion with your left hand, as though you intended to seize the left hand of your assailant, in order to belabor him with your stick. The object of this feint is only to engage your adversary's attention, and make him look at your left hand whilst you suddenly dart your right arm froward, and hook him by the neck in the crook of your stick. Directly you have hooked him, bend your knees well so as to throw the whole weight of your body upon him, whilst you pull him with his face towards the ground. When you have pulled him down sufficiently far to prevent him recovering his balance quickly, let go your stick, and seize him by the shoulders, as shown in photo No. 4, being careful to keep your feet well out of reach of his hands, so as not to give him the opportunity of throwing you backwards. Part II: Self Defense With A Walking Stick
2008-01-08 14:34:00 No. 2. An Effective Way to Defend Oneself with a Hooked Stick when Attacked by a Man Armed with an Ordinary Straight Stick.A stick with a curved handle, forming a roomy crook, although hardly so effective as a stick with a heavy knob on top for striking purposes, is a most serviceable weapon in the hands of an expert in the art of stick-play.Having guarded a blow with a hooked stick, it is a comparatively simple matter to hook an assailant in such a way that he is easily pulled off his balance. With a little practice it becomes easy to make sure of hooking a man firmly by the neck or leg.Suppose, for instance, that a man carrying a crooked stick is suddenly attacked by an assailant armed with an ordinary straight stick. Here is a very pretty way to overthrow the assailant:In the first place, the man with the hooked stick should hold his hand and stick high up, and well on one side, so as not to run any risk of being hit on the fingers.By doing this, he purposely exposes his head to ... Walking Stick Self-Defense Part I
2008-01-07 19:12:00 No. 1 -- The Safest Way to Meet an Attack with a Spiked Staff or Long Stick when you are only Armed with an Ordinary Walking Stick. The first photograph shows the most dangerous mode of attack with a long stick, and also the best position to adopt in order to meet such an attack with safety. It will be seen that the figure on the right is exposing his body in order to insure his adversary attacking him there, and to be prepared with an immediate defence.Directly the man with the alpenstock attempts to bayonette him, he diverts the blow by turning sideways, and making a circular downward cut, which hits the alpenstock and causes it to glide slightly upwards and sideways -- a guard known in sword play as "Septime envelopé." The moment the blow has been diverted, the man with the stick must seize the alpenstock with his left hand, and, stepping in, strike his assailant a blow across the face. ----Source:Self-defence with a Walking-stick: The Different Methods of Defending Oneself with a... How to Build a Campfire
2007-12-05 00:55:00 Make sure you are allowed to build a campfire in the area and that you've cleared all combustible material from around the campfire. Check to see what the fire danger rating is for the day.To begin building a fire, gather the materials and organize them before ever striking the first match.Stack your firewood upwind and about five feet from where you plan your fire.Clear the area of excess pine needles, dried grasses or leaves and splash water around the area but not in the planned fire pit or on your building materials.Create a good foundation by placing rocks in a circle lay a foundation of fine tinder, such as shavings from dried twigs or pine needles, It is best not to use leaves since they float into the air very easily. Perhaps the simplest and most effective approach is to use fire starter.Above the tinder bed, place a few larger dry twigs about the size of a pencil in a criss-cross pattern. Have larger pieces of wood at hand. Lay your tinder beside a short length of stick ... More About: Build
The best survival knife is a sharp knife!
2007-11-19 20:21:00 Click here to see the World's First Self Sharp ening Knife !It almost goes without saying that a high quality knife is better than a lesser quality one that might leave you in the lurch. However, quality isn't, in and of itself, the most critical element, though a reasonable level of quality is essential. Even among the finest quality knives, many lack the features best suited for wilderness survival use. As with so many things, undeniably, any knife is better than no knife at all. We can, however, select a knife which will offer us the most functionality and reliability by dint of its design and construction. The knife should incorporate a full tang (also referred to as a "one piece" or "integral" design") or full length internal tang (generally referred to as "narrow tang"). "Full tang" means the blade material becomes the handle, usually with scales (slabs or side pieces) attached to both sides for improved grip. Sometimes the flat tang is simply left bare, referred to as "skeleto... More About: Survival , Viva
Finding your way - tips from Mother Nature
2007-11-16 15:59:00 Nature's guides: Moss on trees, hemlock tips, many signs of nature, tradition says, will point your way. Well, Mother Nature will mislead you if you don't look out. Her compasses are not so simple to read. Moss does usually grow longest on the north side of trees, because the north side gets the least sun and stays damp the longest. But there are many locations where trees are shaded on the south and moss may grow on a different side or all around a tree.So it is with all of nature's signs. There are general rules about them, but local conditions may spoil the rules. This is not reason for mistrusting nature entirely. Keen eyes can add up all the signs and find the general direction. Here are the best signs. They are useful when it pours rain and the sun won't help.Three plants have leaves growing vertically from the stem. These point north and south:Rosin weed (silphium laciniatum)Prairie dock (silphium terebinthianaceum)Prickly lettuce (Lactuca scoriola)The last gro... More About: Nature , Tips
How to find north with your watch
2007-11-15 16:26:00 From The Real Book of Camping, 1953:With your watch: Hold the watch flat and point the hour hand towards the sun. Lay a match like a third hand exactly half way between the hour hand and the 12. If your watch is on daylight savings time use the 1 instead of the 12. The match will point directly south. It is easier to point the hour hand if you stand a small stick or straw straight up from the tip and make the shadow fall along the hand. More About: Watch , Find , North , With You

How to find north without a compass
2007-11-15 02:42:00 BY THE SUN:In the morning, if the sun is over your right shoulder, you are facing north. In the afternoon, if the sun is over your left shoulder, you are facing north. At noon the sun will be overhead and slightly behind you when you face north. Of course, if you are facing north, your right hand points east and your left points west. This gives direction only very generally, and if the weather is bad, it won't work.-- The Real Book about Camping, 1953 More About: Find , North , Compass

Final Word On Camping
2007-11-09 16:03:00 As a final word of advice to the beginner in camping, let me tell you a few things that my own experience has taught me.A felt hat is better than a cap as it is sun and rain proof.Wear a flannel shirt and take one extra one. You can wash one and wear the other. Be sure to have a new shirt plenty loose in the neck as camp washing in cold water will make it shrink. Do not go around in gymnasium shirts or sleeveless jerseys. One of my companions did this once and was so terribly sunburned that his whole trip was spoiled. Two sets of underwear are plenty, including the one you wear.Take along a silk handkerchief to wear around your neck.Wear comfortable shoes. A camping trip is a poor place to break in new hunting boots or shoes.Take bandanna handkerchiefs and leave your linen ones at home.If you have to choose between a coat and a sweater take the sweater and leave the coat at home. A coat is out of place in the woods.Khaki or canvas trousers are excellent. So are corduroy. An old pair ... More About: Word , Final , Camping
Camp Cooking
2007-11-05 01:38:00 Most boys, and I regret to say a few girls too, nowadays, seem to regard a knowledge of cooking as something to be ashamed of. The boy who expects to do much camping or who ever expects to take care of himself out in the woods had better get this idea out of his head just as soon as possible. Cookin g in a modern kitchen has been reduced to a science, but the boy or man who can prepare a good meal with little but nature's storehouse to draw on and who can make an oven that will bake bread that is fit to eat, with the nearest range fifty miles away, has learned something that his mother or sister cannot do and something that he should be very proud of. Camp cooking is an art and to become an expert is the principal thing in woodcraft—nothing else is so important. We often hear how good the things taste that have been cooked over the camp fire. Perhaps a good healthy appetite has something to do with it, but it is pretty hard even for a hungry boy to relish half-baked, soggy bread or...
