Cage Wars support more serious fight - 06 Nov 2007 03:03:35pm
2007-11-06 16:03:00
By Kirk Penton Tony Condello is hoping repeated punches to the face, arm bars and rear naked chokes will lead to saving a few lives. The Ultimate Cage Wars promoter will use his next night of mixed martial arts fighting -- a card called X-Factor on Nov. 30 at Winnipeg's Convention Centre -- to raise money for CancerCare Manitoba. The proceeds will be designated for CancerCare's children's unit. "You're helping somebody," Condello said as the reason for giving back. "Millionaires we'll never be, so what's the difference? It's a good cause. "We're trying to raise as much money as possible." Ultimate Cage Wars, known as UCW for short, is the only Manitoba promotional company that conducts cards featuring only MMA bouts. Condello said UCW is the third-largest MMA show in Canada. As he has done with previous shows, Condello is once again bringing in a well-known mixed martial artist to sign autographs. Dan Henderson, of U...

EliteXC President On MMA vs Boxing Pay - 06 Nov 2007 02:25:54pm
2007-11-06 15:25:00
By Mitch Bobetz Since the popularity of mixed martial arts has erupted, the pay scale for fighters has been slowly increasing. Some of the top-level athletes such as Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz have reaped the larger paydays in the six and seven-figure range. Paydays of that magnitude weren't even in shouting range about three or four years ago. Even with the elevation of pay the last couple years, many fans and critics still believe that mixed martial artists? pay isn?t even in the same league as boxers. Gary Shaw has promoted fights in both boxing and mixed martial arts and believes the disparity is not as big as the critics believe. ?Truthfully, I don't think there is a discrepancy,? he said in a recent conference call. ?I think that people believe that. But trust me, there's not a discrepancy that you all think there is. Fighters that are starting out that are getting paid a thousand or two thousand a fight are no different than an undercard b...

Nate Mohr vs Manny Gamburyan - 06 Nov 2007 02:19:49pm
2007-11-06 15:19:00
By Al Yu Team Curran fighter Nate Mohr makes his return to the Octagon at Ultimate Fighting Championships 79. Having recovered from a broken right hand, Mohr is set to face ?The Ultimate Fighter? season five runner-up Manny Gamburyan . ?I know his strengths, I know he is tough and where he lacks,? said Mohr about his opponent. ?I feel like he is a good match-up for me. ?I am not going to train differently because I always prepare for wrestlers. I don?t mind being on my back, but would rather be standing or on top. Being from Iowa originally, I respect wrestling a lot and I always trained in wrestling.? Mohr earned his first Octagon victory last June with a unanimous decision over Luke Caudillo at UFC Fight Night 10. The Illinois resident suffered a broken hand during the fight. Subsequent healing complications kept him out of a potential match against Jeremy Stephens at UFC 76. ?I feel great and the hand is finally feeling as close to normal as it can be considering what hap...
The Allure of Kimbo! - 06 Nov 2007 01:53:02pm
2007-11-06 14:53:00
By Lotfi Sariahmed Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson is the latest incarnation of MMA's sideshow trying to make it big in the sport. He debuted by beating up an old and decrepit Ray Mercer in his MMA debut at CFFC 5 in Atlantic City. A fight with Tank Abbott went by the wayside after an investor backed out of CFFC 6. Then Gary Shaw and EliteXC decided to jump on the opportunity and signed the man nicknamed Kimbo to an exclusive multi-fight and multi-year deal. This Saturday he'll make his debut on Showtime taking on Bo "Redrum" Cantrell. Kimbo's a fighter that, if nothing else, brings a lot of intrigue. Is he a mixed martial artist? No. He beat up a 95-year-old boxer and has a plethora of street fighting knockouts. A mixed martial artist he is not. Does that mean he can't be? Of course not. But Kimbo has received so much hype for doing nothing more than street fighting and it boggles my mind. Among my group of friends I'm the MMA nut. People ar...

One-on-one with ref "Big" John McCarthy - 06 Nov 2007 01:36:34pm
2007-11-06 14:36:00
By Ben Zeidler ?Big? John McCarthy is one of the most familiar faces in MMA. But, he?s not a fighter ? he?s a referee and if it?s a big fight, odds are McCarthy is the man officiating the action. MMA Madness? Ben Zeidler caught up with McCarthy by phone late last week. MMA Madness: You probably have the coolest job in the world. How did you get involved with refereeing for MMA events? McCarthy: [Laughs] I started because I worked out with Rorian and Royce Gracie before the UFC was ever started. When they did the first one, there were some things that happened that Rorian wasn't happy with, and he asked me to do it. MMA Madness: Is it true that you were involved in fighting but decided not to pursue that career because you didn't want to fight your friend, Royce Gracie? McCarthy: Well, they didn't want to put me in there with him. I never had the chance to, which ended up being a good thing. Things worked out better for me the way they went. MMA Madness: How d...
Matt Hughes: Training and iAmplify Video Shoot. - 06 Nov 2007 01:17:21pm
2007-11-06 14:17:00
By Matt Hughes This will be my first week of intense training, I?ll train here at home. I?ve got quite a few guys coming to town to train for their fights and they?ll help me out as well. I?ll post a list of who those fighters are next week. This past weekend, a film crew came to town and we did a download project for iAmplify and had a great time. I got along with everybody on the set and we used an old building here in Hillsboro, so it was just a really good time. The video is basically going to be my workout just really watered down for the general public. It?s not really designed for fighters, just average people looking to get in shape. I?ll have more information on that later. This weekend, I?m doing an appearance at Dale?s Harley Davidson, down in Mt. Vernon, Saturday, November 10th from 2-4 PM. It?s a benefit for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and the actual benefit is from 7 PM to midnight at the Holiday Inn Banquet Room. Proceeds for everything benefit the M...

Q&A with rising UFC star Houston Alexander - 06 Nov 2007 01:04:18pm
2007-11-06 14:04:00
By Gary Herman Houston Alexander has been in the UFC for a little over five months. During that time, he defeated Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara in very impressive fashion, registering two knockouts and spending less than two total minutes in the cage. Now, Alexander prepares for his next opponent -- undefeated Brazilian slugger Thiago Silva on Nov. 17 at UFC 78. We recently sat down with Alexander to discuss the upcoming fight, how he rose so quickly in the UFC, and his views on his manager's new M-1 promotion: Q: What are your thoughts on the upcoming fight with Thiago Silva? A: It's going to be a very exciting fight. Thiago likes to come out just like I do. He wants to come right at you. Q: How long do you think the fight will go? Will it be a quick one? A: I'm not sure. It can go a minute, or it can go three rounds. It all depends on the type of fighter he wants to be. If he wants to go down quick, we can do it quick. If he wants to go down slow, we ca...

The promotion will maintain the traditional welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. Despite the objections of many inside the MMA industry, most notably UFC president Dana White, those who voted on The Fight Network?s latest poll sided with Shaw by a slight margin. Question: Should Pro Elite, Inc. be allowed to introduce new weight divisions outside the standard five? 51.7% - Yes, more weight divisions are long overdue 48.3% - No, Pro Elite is a newcomer and will disrupt efforts to unify the sport

Baroni case highlights CSAC flaws - 06 Nov 2007 12:13:51pm
2007-11-06 13:13:00
By Dave Meltzer Phil Baron i says he spent $20,000 to clear his name, lost sponsors, and believed he comes out of his steroid suspension with a damaged reputation. The MMA fighter had has year-long sentence reduced to six months at the Oct. 31 meeting of the California State Athletic Commision in Los Angeles. Baroni also believes lost one six-figure payday for not being able to fight on the Nov. 16 Strikeforce event. Baroni noted the case of boxer James Toney, who presented no evidence in his August defense other than saying he didn't take the steroids for which he tested positive. Toney got the same suspension reduction Baroni did. And unlike Baroni, who had never tested positive previously, it was Toney's second violation. While originally reported as Nov. 13, Baroni?s appeal date is in question because they have to find a date where all key parties are available. Hearings for UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk, Kazuhiro Nakamura (who tested positive for marijuana on ...

Super Bowl Showdown Set Between Lesnar and Mir - 06 Nov 2007 12:05:19pm
2007-11-06 13:05:00
By Thomas Gerbasi In a classic case of putting your money where your mouth is, new UFC signee Brock Lesnar ? who has made no bones about wanting to fight the best the heavyweight division has to offer ? will make his Octagon debut at UFC 81 on February 2nd against none other than former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir. The bout will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada on the eve of Super Bowl XLII. ?It?s an interesting matchup,? said UFC President Dana White. ?Lesnar is a great wrestler, a good athlete, and this is definitely gonna be a big test for him. Frank Mir is a former world champion who is coming off a big win over Antoni Hardonk, and he?s looking to get his career back on track while Lesnar?s looking to walk into the UFC and prove what type of fighter he?s gonna be by trying to knock him off.? Rival Promoter Suggests Injunction Against MFC 14 Main Event - 02 Nov 2007
2007-11-02 19:17:00
By Mike Russell Hardcore Championship Fighting CEO Keith Crawford sent a letter to Association of Boxing Commissions President Timothy J. Lueckenhoff this week in hopes of preventing a rival promoter from staging a main event later this month. Crawford presented his concerns over the scheduled Maximum Fighting Championship 14 bout between UFC veteran Shonie Carter and Brad Zazulak on Friday, Nov. 23 at the River Cree Resort and Casino in Edmonton, Alberta. Crawford contends Zazulak, who has only two professional MMA fights to his credit, should not be sanctioned to compete against Carter, a veteran of more than 90 matches. Crawford believes the fight is ?dangerous? and could ?cause serious damage to? or ?tarnish the good name of mixed martial arts.? The MFC event falls under the jurisdiction of the River Cree Combative Sports Commission; the commission can bypass Section 83 of the Canadian Criminal Code, which considers prize fights in MMA or boxing illegal. Although it encompas...

Derrick Noble Moving Down To Lightweight in 2008 - 02 Nov 2007 06:10:37pm
2007-11-02 19:10:00
By Brian Knapp Derrick Noble revealed this week his intention to drop from welterweight to lightweight in 2008 . The 29-year-old former Marine indicated he would pursue one more fight at 170 pounds before the year is out. Noble (21-10-1), who challenged Eddie Alvarez for the Mixed Fighting Championship welterweight crown in 2006, has lost back-to-back fights as a welterweight. He sees the 155-pound division as a natural fit. ?The only reason I?m considering the drop is because, with the training I?m doing now, I?m walking around too light for 170,? Noble said. ?It has nothing to do with me feeling like I can?t compete at 170; it has more to do with me being lighter and feeling like a drop to 155 will be a new challenge for me. Of course, in most cases, it should give me a size and strength advantage in my fights, as long as I get down correctly.? (Continue Reading)

Pete Sell Awarded His BJJ Black Belt - 02 Nov 2007 05:56:25pm
2007-11-02 18:56:00
By Brian Knapp Representatives from the Serra Jiu-Jitsu Academy in East Meadow, N.Y. announced this week that UFC veteran Pete Sell had been awarded his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Sell (7-4), a longtime protégé and close friend of UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra, has lost three consecutive fights, a stretch of adversity that includes his knockout loss to Nate Quarry at UFC Fight Night in September. A native of Bayshore, N.Y., Sell upset Phil Baroni in his promotional debut at UFC 51 in February 2005; he submitted the middleweight brawler with a third-round guillotine choke. The 25-year-old Sell, however, is perhaps best known for his one-punch knockout loss to Scott Smith at ?The Ultimate Fighter 4? Live Finale a year ago.

Ghosts In The Attic, Taylor Invokes Rematch Clause - 02 Nov 2007 05:49:55pm
2007-11-02 18:49:00
By Jeff Young Ever since new middleweight champion Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik knocked out former undefeated champion Jermain "Bad Intentions" Taylor , many have been wondering exactly what the former champion's next move would be. There have been talks of him taking an interim fight before fighting the hard-hitting Pavlik again and there have also been talks of Pavlik taking on WBO contender John Duddy. Finally letting his intentions be known, Jermain Taylor has opted to invoke his rematch clause and take on Pavlik immediately. At first, I agreed with the talk of an interim fight for Taylor. The reasoning is that after being knocked out the way Taylor was, you never know exactly how a fighter will react in the ring. An interim fight would give you an idea. After a while, however, I changed my mind. The reason is that If an interim fight took place, we may never get a chance to see Pavlik-Taylor 2. There are just too many things that could happen. Taylor could ...

PDG: Can you give fans your breakdown of your fight with Forrest. What went right and what went wrong? Shogun: I don?t like to give excuses, I lost and that's it, period. K-1 fighter Choi Hong -man, the former ssirum (traditional Korean wrestling) champion, has transformed into a rapper, performing alongside model-turned-singer Kang Soo-hee in a duo called Beauty and the Beast. The duo will release their first album next month. On Thursday Choi had his pictures taken for the album's cover at a nightclub in Gangnam in southern Seoul. During his wrestling days he picked up nickname "Techno Goliath" for dancing on a sand-covered floor right after winning a match. "I like dancing and I was a good dancer when I was a student," Choi said. "I always dreamed of becoming a singer whenever I saw singers performing on TV." The 2.18-meter tall goliath continued, "If I weren't this tall, I'd work in show business. I gave up my dream at the age of 15 when I started Korean wrestling. Now my wish has come true, although belatedly." The duo will make its national debut in mid-December with a quick-tempo track ca...

Gary Shaw Is Not The Only Promoter Changing Weight Classes - 02 Nov 2007 01
2007-11-02 14:54:00
By Jordan Breen If you thought Gary Shaw and ProElite were the only ones waging war on the weights and measures of MMA, think again. DEEP big boss Shigeru Saeki has announced that he is set to make a plethora of changes in an effort to remodel DEEP in 2008. Perhaps most interesting, he is strongly considering revamping DEEP's weight classes to suit those of the unified rules of mixed martial arts used in North American regulation and sanctioning. Currently the only promotion in Japan that uses the unified rules in any form is Greatest Common Multiple, which employs the full unified rules for its Cage Force series. Although Saeki has not elaborated on his desire to move toward the unified weight classes, it would appear that he is intent on keeping the current rule structure of DEEP, which includes stomps and soccer kicks while prohibiting elbows. In a recent interview regarding upstart company World Victory Road and the establishment of the Japanese MMA Association, Saeki...

The ?Count?down to 78 - Week Two - 02 Nov 2007 12:49:09pm
2007-11-02 13:49:00
By Michael Bisping Hi guys. Training has gone extremely well this week; so well that I?ve realized I was even more over-trained for the last fight than I originally thought. Two weeks away from my fight at UFC 75, I felt tired and just wanted the fight to come and go so I could relax. But now, two weeks out from UFC 78, I can?t wait for the first bell, and I am really excited and looking forward to it. I am counting the days until I fly over to America. NOT DRINKING THE KOOL-AID As I said last week, me and Rashad isn?t a grudge match. I like the guy and respect him as a fighter but of course, all that doesn?t mean I?m not going to go all out to beat the crap out of him at UFC 78 - especially as he seems to be dismissing me as an opponent. I read Rashad?s column on UFC.com the other day and also watched his video interview, both with great interest. He seems to be saying I think I am better than I actually am, that I am fooling myself into a false sense of security or whatev...

What was once a promising card full of the IFL?s biggest stars vying for a championship belt in their respective weight division has now gone through drastic changes due to contract disputes and injuries. One of the more notable absences in the Grand Prix is the promotion?s No. 1 heavyweight, Ben Rothwell, who along with Mike Whitehead and Antonio McKee is absent due to contractual disputes. Radach Tops All Heading Into IFL Grand Prix - 02 Nov 2007 12:10:31pm
2007-11-02 13:10:00
By Mick Hammond There?s no doubt that heading into Saturday?s first round of the International Fight League World Grand Prix, Los Angeles Anaconda?s middleweight Benji ?Razor? Radach is on fire as the league prepares to crown its first individual champions. After missing nearly three years of competition due to various injuries, he was something of a wildcard coming into the 2007 IFL season. But after dispatching the very tough Ryan McGivern of the Quad Cities Silverbacks in the opening team fight, Radach showed that he could be a viable threat in the league, even while still not 100% healthy. Eight months and three fights later, he is undefeated in the league and the top seed in the opening ground of the four-man middleweight bracket. ?I?m feeling good, more confident and stronger than I?ve ever been,? said Radach heading into this weekend?s show. ?Training-wise everything?s going good, injury-wise things are great. So I?m feeling confident.? As the top seed in the tournament...

Baroni Not Happy With Reduced Sentence - 02 Nov 2007 12:05:08pm
2007-11-02 13:05:00
By Tom Hamlin LOS ANGELES ? Phil Baron i looked morose as he exited his hearing with the California State Athletic Commission on Wednesday. His suspension of one year had been reduced to six months, but his name was not cleared. ?It feels like a loss to me,? Baroni told reporters. ?I?m convicted of using steroids. I didn?t use steroids. I thought I took enough tests to prove I didn?t. I wanted more than anything to prove I didn?t do it. To be cleared of it. And I?m not. I?m labeled guilty. ?I?ll be able to fight soon, but I still didn?t get what I wanted.? Baroni testified in front of the CSAC board for nearly a half-hour, flatly denying any steroid use and speaking at length about his career and training methods. The centerpiece of his defense was four separate steroid tests he took around the time of his fight. The first was taken at the behest of manager Ken Pavia, who claimed he ordered it prior to the fight after discovering one of the 67 supplements Baroni was taking ca...

All of the major participants were on hand to promote the fight, with the exception of Robert ?The Ghost? Guerrero, who will be fighting in the co-main event when he squares off against Martin Honorio for Guerrero?s IBF featherweight belt. Guerrero?s co-manager, Bob Santos, represented his fighter at the press conference and explained the reason for Guerrero?s absence. Unfortunately, the Guerrero family has just discovered that Robert Guerrero?s wife has been diagnosed with leukemia. ?Obviously, it?s a sad situation,? explained Santos, ?but he will fight on Saturday night. Raising kids tougher than KOing foes for Alexander - 02 Nov 2007 11:36:37am
2007-11-02 12:36:00
By Kevin Iole Houston Alexander chuckles and begs you not to make him out to be Superman. After carefully examining the facts, though, you arrive at the inescapable conclusion that Superman is the perfect nickname for the fast-rising UFC light heavyweight contender. And no, it's not because of his two knockout victories in his first two UFC fights, which took a combined one minute and 49 seconds, though his victims, Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara, may be buying into the Superman hype a bit at this point. And neither is it because of his ability to bench press as much as 450 pounds, or more than twice his body weight, because being a star weight lifter is no guarantee of success as a mixed martial arts fighter. Alexander, who faces his biggest challenge on Nov. 17 at UFC 78 in Newark, N.J., when he meets Thiago Silva, earns the Superman moniker every day as the single parent of six children. Taking care of six children between the ages of 5 and 16 is a big enough job fo...
