Gabriel Gonzaga vs Werdum in 2008 - 30 Oct 2007 02:18:47am
2007-10-30 03:18:00 The Carioca Gabriel ?Napao? GOnzaga finally shall have a chance to avenge his knockout loss to Fabricio Werdum in Jungle Fight 1, in September, 2003. Marco Alvan, leader of Team Link confirmed today exclusively to GRACIEMAG.com that the battle between the black belts will take place in January, at UFC 80, in Newcastle, England. Napao is recovering from a fractured nose, suffered during his loss to Randy Couture, in August. Werdum, though, has been training hard with his new team, Chute Boxe, since his loss to the Belarusian Andrei Arlovski in April. ?They fought at different times, Napao was 10kg lighter and was not originally on the card. The fight was offered to him at the last moment and they said there was a change in adversary and it would be Werdum. The two have progressed a lot and have what it takes to put on a great fight. Napao thinks the first fight was good and that this one will be even better. He accepted the proposal the minute it was offered,? declared Alvan. Sour... More About: Gabriel Gonzaga , Gonzaga , 2008
Alvan Talks About Team Link - 30 Oct 2007 02:15:49am
2007-10-30 03:15:00 With the growing popularity of MMA and the transformation of the United States into the greatest center for worldwide MMA, new teams have popped up in the land of Uncle Sam. One of them has been growing a lot in recent months and there it has a very Brazilian face. Team Link , which already includes Gabriel Napao and Paulao Filho, was announced last week with a new home for the undefeated UFC fighter Thiago Silva, although the black belt leader of the team Marco Alvan cleared up the story to GRACIEMAG.com: ?We didn?t say Thiago would be only our athlete that was a mistake. I immediately called up Macaco to clear things up. Thiago can come any time he wants to train with us and swap experiences, however, he will defend the flag of Macaco Gold Team. When I called Jorge (Patino, ?Macaco?), he told me Thiago would fight for Macaco, Chute Boxe and Team Link and I was stoked. Macaco is my friend and I will soon put him in a big event here.? The phase the team is going through is so good ...
Brock Lesnar: ?This Isn?t a Joke For Me.? - 30 Oct 2007 02:06:39am
2007-10-30 03:06:00 By David L. Hudson, Jr. Many gifted athletes have failed when attempting to transition from their sport to another. Reynaldo ?Skeets? Nehemiah dominated the 110 meter high hurdles in track & field but failed to make an impression as a receiver for the San Francisco 49ers. ?His Airness,? Michael Jordan became a cultural icon and basketball legend for the Chicago Bulls but struck out in his attempt at Major League Baseball. The great Althea Gibson dominated the tennis world in the late 1950s, winning U.S. Open and Wimbledon titles, but she failed to win a single LPGA event when she tried her hand at professional golf. Ed ?Too Tall? Jones terrified NFL quarterbacks with his speed and agility and 6-9? frame, but his experiment with boxing sent him back to the NFL. Former WWE pro wrestling superstar Brock Lesnar insists that his transition to mixed martial arts will be different. ?I want to try to prove to myself and the fighting world that, yes, Brock Lesnar can be a seriou... 2007-10-30 02:59:00 By Chris Yucus Only five days out from show time, Jay Hieron (12-4, 4-2 IFL) has learned he will face a new opponent in the opening bracket of the International Fight League World Grand Prix this Saturday at the Sears Centre in Chicago. Hieron, who was slated to face Patrick Healy, will now be tested against Donnie Liles (8-3, 1-1 IFL) in the tournament?s first leg to crown a welterweight champion. Healy (18-12, 2-1 IFL) was forced to withdraw from the bout due to a hyper-extended elbow. ?It?s the fight game; stuff like this happens,? said Hieron. ?I?m ready to go no matter who is standing in front of me.? Liles is Hieron?s third opponent switch since being named to the Grand Prix in August. Original opponent Mark Miller also withdrew with an injury; Hieron said he was told Saturday he?d be facing Gideon Ray after Healy dropped out, as well. Ray faces Brazilian acrobat Delson Heleno in the other welterweight bracket, the winners converging in the finals Saturday, Dec. 29 at ... More About: The Grand , The G
Kalib Starnes Speaks About Post UFC 77 Fight Incident - 30 Oct 2007 01:55:3
2007-10-30 02:55:00 By Mike Russell Kali b Starnes expounded on his emotional outburst after his doctor stoppage loss to Alan Belcher at UFC 77 Oct. 20 in Cincinnati. Following the ringside physician?s decision to stop the fight due to a nasty skull-deep laceration that took 30 to 40 stitches to close, Starnes turned on his corner to explain he was OK to fight despite the doctor?s ruling. The expletive-laced tirade left many wondering what prompted the reaction. The well-spoken 32-year-old, who has admitted in the past that he finds it difficult to think clearly following a tough fight, said he misunderstood the sentiments of his corner. ?After the doctor stopped the fight, one of my cornermen was looking at the cut over my eye and yelling, ?Why are you stopping [the fight]??? Starnes said. ?His comments were directed at the doctor and the referee, but because he was staring at me while he was yelling, I became confused and started yelling back at him. I couldn't understand why he would be yellin... More About: Post , Fight , Incident , Cide

Yves Edwards and Antonio Silva at Elite XC "Renegade" - 30 Oct 2007 01:44:1
2007-10-30 02:44:00 By Brian Knapp Yves Edwards and Antonio Silva will compete at Elite XC ?Renegade? Saturday, Nov. 10 at the America Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, sources close to the American Top Team have confirmed. Edwards (29-13-1) will meet Moses Baca (2-2); Silva (8-1), meanwhile, will collide with Jonathan Wiezorek (11-1). Known for his lanky build and savvy striking game, Edwards put together a seven-fight win streak in 2004, which included a split decision win over Hermes Franca at UFC 47 and a highlight reel head kick knockout of Josh Thomson at UFC 49. The 31-year-old hit a speed bump in 2005, though, and has lost three in a row and five out of six. Edwards last competed in July when he lost to Jorge Masvidal by knockout under the Bodog Fight banner. The two are now teammates at ATT. Silva, meanwhile, underwent surgery in June to remove a tumor from his cranial region. Nicknamed ?Bigfoot? for his 6-foot-4, near 300-pound frame, Silva was originally slated to face Wiezorek at K...

Sean Sherk's Steroid Appeal Verdict Approaches - 29 Oct 2007 03:01:30pm
2007-10-29 16:01:00 By Dan Stupp Sean Sherk 's future, as well as the future of the Ultimate Fighting Championship's lightweight division, are in the hands of the California State Athletic Commission. On Wednesday, the traditionally unforgiving commission will render a verdict on Sherk's appeal of a one-year suspension and $2,500 fine. The UFC lightweight champion defeated top contender Hermes Franca in July, but he tested positive for anabolic steroids and elevated testosterone levels in a subsequent drug test. Sherk has some staunch supporters on his side, including UFC President Dana White, who says he believes the fighter's claims that he never knowingly ingested any banned substances. However, White says he'll have no choice but to strip Sherk of his title if the suspension is upheld. However, if Sherk does win his appeal ? and, again, that's a major "if" ? are fans willing to forgive and forget? Despite a remarkable 32-2-1 record (with losses only to former c... Lindland Wants To Fight - 29 Oct 2007 02:33:29pm
2007-10-29 15:33:00 By Jeff Cain Matt "The Law" Lindland, ranked #3 middleweight in the world by the MMAWeekly World Wide rankings, hasn't competed since April when he lost to Fedor Emelianenko at Bodog Fight s in St. Petersburg, Russia. It's been six months and Matt Lindland wants to fight. "It's been way too long since I've gotten back into the ring," said Lindland. "I have two fights left on my Bodog contract, but I'm not exclusive with them as contracts shouldn't be. You shouldn't have to be exclusive with one promoter. I'm pretty much available to whoever wants me to come fight for their organization." "If somebody had somebody out there, like say Anderson Silva, that needed to get beat up, I'd be more than happy to step in the ropes and take him on. I think that would be a great match up stylistic wise." Lindland was in attendance for UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva's title defense against Rich Frankiln at...
Wanderlei Comments On Return To UFC - 29 Oct 2007 02:25:09pm
2007-10-29 15:25:00 By Damon Martin One of the most talked about fights in MMA history has finally been signed as Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell are set to meet in the Octagon on Dec. 29 at UFC 79. Silva and Liddell are at critical points in their respective careers with both coming off of back to back losses and a third would be considerably devastating in a sport that doesn?t hesitate to create new stars out of a legend?s ashes. With so many former Pride stars struggling in their UFC debuts, most recently Silva?s former training partner, Mauricio ?Shogun? Rua, it is Wanderlei who steps into this latest challenge with realistic expectations and a renewed fire for fighting. ?A fight?s a fight,? said Silva. ?Now I train only the cage, the Octagon, of course I want to do my best, I want to give good emotion for my fans here. I?ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, and I?m going to give my best.? (Continue Reading) More About: Comments , Return
Liddell vs Silva ? What a Long, Strange Trip It?s Been - 29 Oct 2007 02:19:
2007-10-29 15:19:00 By Thomas Gerbasi Ever since 1998, when they fought on the same local show in Brazil, Wanderlei Silva has wanted to fight Chuck Liddell . It was something in the attitude of both men, an attitude that said ?I?m gonna stand here and hit you, and you can hit me back, but one of us is going to go down, and I?m not gonna stop swinging until that happens.? Both fighters would win that night - Silva over Mike Van Arsdale, Liddell over Jose ?Pele? Landi-Jons - and go on to greatness in their respective organizations: Silva in PRIDE, and Liddell in the UFC. Eventually, as both rose up the ranks, the questions got louder and louder ? when would these two 205-pound superstars fight? It was a question the President of the UFC, Dana White, wanted answered as well, and it had nothing to do with the obvious financial rewards that would come with the bout. As a fan, he just knew that putting Liddell and Silva together would be the MMA version of Armageddon. ?Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell bo... More About: Trip , Strange , Long
Happy Anniversary to Randy and Kim! - 29 Oct 2007 07:49:01am
2007-10-29 08:49:00 October 28th marks the one year wedding anniversary of Randy and Kim Couture. It?s also the three year anniversary of the day they met. How cute is that? They got married on the two year anniversary of the day they met. We wish them the best and continued success. If you?ve ever met these two, they?re like a high school couple in love. They had the chance in South Africa to enjoy the honeymoon they didn?t get to take last Fall. This time last year they were getting the gym, the clothing company and nutrition company up running. During their time in South Africa, they were out of cell phone range and got to spend a great, romantic time by themselves. They told us about the wine tastings, a three day safari, Great White Shark dive and trip to the Cape of Good Hope that all sound phenomenal. Randy and Kim both say that if you ever get a chance to go to South Africa, you should definitely do it. Source: xtremecouture.wordpress.com More About: Anniversary , Happy , Happy Anniversary

2007-10-29 08:33:00 Jay Hieron is gearing up for the IFL Grand Prix next Saturday. He?s ready to fight. Period. Three times his opponent has changed. Now Jay is set to take on Gideon Ray. Jay?s been training like an absolute maniac. Sparring with fellow 170lb stud Mike Pyle, Anacondas teammate Chris Horodecki (who also fights in the Grand Prix ), Karo Parisyan, and Josh Haynes. After worries that a contractual situation would complicate Jay?s participation in the Grand Prix and numerous opponents dropping out, now we?re 6 days from fight time. Jay is looking great. He tells us he?s ready to scrap in Chicago. The Grand Prix marks a departure from the IFL?s team format and will allow the fighters to exhibit themselves as individuals rather than part of a team. You?ll get to see Jay?s dynamic personality on display in his choice of shorts and mouthpiece. Source: xtremecouture.wordpress.com
IFL Draft Hits Chicago - 29 Oct 2007 06:49:19am
2007-10-29 07:49:00 By Chris Yucus It looked like an open call for ?American Idol,? but the contestants were much, much tougher. Nearly 250 hopefuls turned out for Saturday?s International Fight League open tryouts held in a banquet room at the Schaumburg Hyatt-Regency Hotel in Chica go . The event was the third and final audition the fledgling promotion has held in the last month to boost awareness and create a fighter?s pool for its twelve teams competing in its 2008 season. Only fighters who caught the eyes of IFL coaches Pat Miletich and Maurice Smith, along with their team of evaluators, would enter the second round. The second round, which consisted of a three-minute sparring bout, narrowed the field even further. Those deemed worthy after sparring were added to the final draft pool, as potential team members and alternates for the league. LA Boxing president Anthony Geisler, whose chain of gyms sponsored the event, added that those who tried out would be used to help fill instructing positi... More About: Draft , Hits

Molitor Too Fast For 3K Battery - 28 Oct 2007 02:45:09pm
2007-10-28 15:45:00 Steve "The Canadian Kid" Molitor (25-0, 10 KO's) defended his IBF Jr. Featherweight title Saturday night at Rama, Ontario, two hours north of Toronto, with a lopsided, yet hard-fought unanimous decision over Thailand's Fushang 3K Battery (58-9-1, 35 KO's). Molitor's hardspeed, movement, and combinations trumped the one dimensional Battery's stalking offense most of the night, with Molitor scoring heavily in nearly every round. The Thali fighter showed a chin and a will that Molitor, despite all his great work, could not dent. "He's a tough fighter, and he showed that he came here to win, and I have to give him all the respect in the world," a victorious Molitor said of his foe at the post-fight press conference. "He takes a hell of a shot, and he hits hard too." (Continue Reading) More About: Fast
Chael Sonnen Challenges Frank Shamrock! - 28 Oct 2007 02:23:30pm
2007-10-28 15:23:00 By Michael Russell Chael Sonnen knows whom he wants to fight next. Seconds after he delivered a convincing victory over Kyacey Uscola at Sportfight XX: Homecoming -- in front of Sonnen's home crowd inside the Rose Garden -- an assistant held up a red and black sign: "Chael Sonnen challenges Frank Sham rock ." "I'm going to go ahead and keep going after him until he accepts," Sonnen, 21-8-1, said after the fight. Shamrock should have got the message tonight. After starting the bout, co-sponsored by BodogFIGHT and Sportfight, with a flying knee straight to Uscola's chest, Sonnen was able to get takedowns almost at will. Twice he nearly finished with rear-naked choke attempts, and eventually the fight was stopped in Sonnen's favor four minutes into the first round. The only blemish to the match was an errant knee to Uscola's head that stopped the action for two minutes. (Continue Reading)
Ricardo Almeida Returns Home To The UFC - 28 Oct 2007 02:13:09pm
2007-10-28 15:13:00 By Mick Hammond When Ricardo ?Big Dog? Almeida decided to retire in 2004 in the prime of his career, it surprised many to say the least. Almeida had just triumphed over Ryo Chonan in his return match at the Pride Fighting Championships, which made for an impressive sixth win in a row. A streak that included claiming the middleweight King of Pancrase title from perennial champion Nate Marquardt the prior year. It seemed he was well on his way to establishing himself as one of the best 185-pound fighters in the world, when, without warning, he walked away. Deep-seeded desires to spend more time with his growing family and blossoming jiu-jitsu academy in his adopted home of New Jersey, as well as continued work with his master, Renzo Gracie, and his team all contributed to Almeida?s desire to leave the sport. Now, three years later, after having seen perhaps the most prosperous time in both his personal and business life, he decided to return to mixed martial arts to take one more... More About: Home
Can World Victory Road Fill The Japanese Void? - 28 Oct 2007 02:07:50pm
2007-10-28 15:07:00 By Taro Kotani Recently in Tokyo, World Victory Road Inc. (WVR) and Japan Mixed Martial Arts Federation (JMM) were introduced at a press conference to rejuvenate the Japanese mixed martial arts market. Naoya Kinoshita was named CEO of WVR. He is a successful business figure in Japan. As the chairman for the Kinoshita Group, a Japanese real estate company, Kinoshita runs various businesses such as constructing and managing apartments and mansions, managing public health care facilities, and manufacturing furniture. His connection with MMA remains cloudy since no further information has been revealed. But like he mentioned at the press conference, his desire to bring life back to Japanese MMA as a loyal fan and his experience as an acknowledged businessperson will likely play a key role in his new challenge. With respect to the JMM, Tomiaki Fukuda was named President and Takao Yasuda was named Vice President of the sanctioning body. Unlike Kinoshita, Fukuda and Yasuda have s... More About: Fill

Unfortunately, he suffered a broken right hand during the fight. Bart Palaszewski Ready For Horodecki - 28 Oct 2007 01:47:40pm
2007-10-28 14:47:00 By Al Yu Coming off a controversial loss to Devidas Taurosevicius at the International Fight League 2007 Team Championship Finals, the Quad City Silverbacks? Bart Palaszewski looks ahead to a rematch with Chris Horodecki. "Horodecki is a good fighter, but he never did anything to me in the first fight,? stated Palaszewski. ?He took me down so I wouldn't knock him out. He's in trouble.? ?Bartimus? and Horodecki first met in the ring last February when the IFL visited Houston. In one of the most competitive fights in IFL?s short history, the Anacondas? Horodecki walked away with a split decision victory. Although Horodecki was awarded the decision, the fight was not without controversy. With about one minute left in the first round, Palaszewski landed a short right hook that had the19-yeard old fighter dazed. He secured a standing guillotine choke near the ropes and had Horodecki in trouble until he fell through the ropes, avoiding the choke. The remainder of fi... More About: Ready

2007-10-28 14:41:00 By Al Yu Since the beginning of October, Jeff Curran has intensified his training in preparation for a showdown against 145-pound World Extreme Cagefighting champion Urijah Faber. ?Training for this fight is something I have desired for a long time. Not just for a belt, not just for being in the public eye, but for a solid win over Urijah Faber. I am hungrier for this than I have ever been!" Curran returned to the WEC last August after nearly a five-year absence. The first opponent under his exclusive four-fight contract was Hardcore Gym?s Stephen Ledbetter. 2007-10-28 13:57:00 By Jason Remillard SPRINGFIELD - Team Link proved it could walk the walk just as well as it talks the talk. The Ludlow-based mixed martial arts fight team prepared for last night's Extreme Fighting International event expecting to sweep its three bouts. Marco Alvan's crew did not disappoint. Chicopee's Karn Gregorian led the way by winning the EFI light-heavyweight championship by decision over Jerry Spiegel at "Battle in the Field" at the MassMutual Center. Teammates Gabriel "Gladiator" Santos and Granville's Nate Woodger also were victorious, giving Team Link the sweep it had hoped for. They also gave their cheering section of 400 or so plenty to cheer about. The total attendance for this first EFI card at the downtown arena was estimated at about 2,500. "We are very confident," Alvan said. "Gabriel Gladiator is a monster, Nate Woodger is 2-0 right now, and he's another guy that's up and coming." Gregorian a... More About: Sweep
My Hollywood Agent - 28 Oct 2007 12:15:43pm
2007-10-28 13:15:00 By Randy "The Natural" Couture I feel the need to expound on my relationship with my so-called ?Hollywood agent.? I hoped my explanation of Matt Walker, my sports agent, at the Xtreme Couture press conference would be enough to shift the focus and any blame for my decision to resign from Zuffa and the UFC organization from him and place it squarely where it belongs. It was 100% my decision based on six years of feeling slighted, overlooked, used, unappreciated, and generally not wanted by the company. I hope this sets the record straight, for although I know Matt can take the heat, he does not deserve it. I have stated I?ve been doing movies and work in the TV and motion picture industry for six years now. I?ve been involved in seven motion pictures and several TV shows in that time. That has always been one of the perks of being a professional athlete, but has never gotten in the way of my real passions ? training and fighting. As I?ve progressed in acting and at the ti...
