Is it time to panic yet?

Men's basketball team drops second straight game to start the season; WPI tops Brandeis 78-64 Saturday night in WorcesterBy Jeffrey PicketteProbably safe to say this isn't the start to the season the men's basketball team's coaches and players envisioned.WPI handed Brandeis its second loss in as many games. Where the Lasell game last Tuesday was contested right down to the final shot at the buzzer, WPI pulled ahead in this game last Saturday night early in the second half.Brandeis jumped out of the gate with an 8-3 lead four minutes into the game, behind two three-pointers from rookie guard Tyrone Hughes '12. Unfortunately for the Judges, the five-point lead would represent the team's largest of the game.WPI sophomore forward Ben Etten sank two free-throws midway through the first-half, giving WPI a 13-12 lead and the Engineers never looked back. WPI increased the lead to six by halftime, 34-28, and to as many as 17 points at five different occasions in the second-half, before...

Lasell knocks Brandeis off cloud nine

Ninth-ranked men's basketball team upset in season openerBy Jeffrey PicketteWith ten and a half minutes left in the second half of the mens' basketball team's seasoning opening tilt at Lasell College Tuesday night, chants of "overrated" from the Lasell faithful filled the gymnasium.Brandeis, ranked ninth in D3hoops preseason top 25 poll, had just called a timeout following a turnover from forward Steve DeLuca (GRAD) and trailed 54-47.The Judges were able to cut into the deficit, but ultimately these same "overrated" chants reverberated as the final buzzer sounded. Lasell avenged its tournament loss to Brandeis in the opening round of last year's NCAA tournament, squeaking by the Judges 68-66 this time around. With the upset, Brandeis falls to 0-1, while Lasell is 1-0.Brandeis trailed 68-64 with 1:43 left to play when Lasell sophomore guard Corey Godfrey converted a layup. The Judges would play suffocating defense for the remainder of the game, but could not muster enough offense ...

Quote of the Day
2008-06-05 19:19:00
This from Bill Simmons' chat on ESPN today:Marcus (TN): It didn't get dusty in the Simmons' household when Manny hit his 500th homer, did it?Bill Simmons: it didn't get dusty, but I happened to watch it live and was legitimately fired up. Manny is like a family member at this point, he really is. I can't imagine life without him. He's like having a dog - you have him for 10 years, he does strange things, you always end up forgiving him, he always comes through when you least expect it, and then when it's over, you remember him fondly.Gotta love that man Bill Simmons.

MLB Power Rankings - Sox Still on Top
2008-04-22 00:31:00
Everyone loves rankings, and while it might not be week 1 of the 2008 MLB season, it is the first week of the 2008 MLB Power Rankings for us here at WBRS. So without further ado, here's the list. Obviously how the teams are playing now is a key part of the grading criteria, but I'm also taking into account where a team's ceiling is. Agree, disagree - leave a comment and let us know!1. Boston Red Sox: Big Papi is just starting to hit... and they're already 14-72. Arizona Diamondbacks: Who knows if the kids will keep hitting, but no one can question how good their pitching is3. Chicago Cubs: Welcome back Derek Lee4. LA Angels: Joe Saunders and Ervin Santana are making it easier to forget that Lackey and Escobar are still out5. NY Mets: Lack of power from the two Carloses has to be a concern6. Milwaukee Brewers: They just got Gallardo back, but now imagine if Sheets could actually stay healthy7. Chicago White Sox: Not totally sold on them yet, but another week or two of this pla...

NBA Playoff Preview: Hawks vs. Celtics
2008-04-20 06:45:00
(Click the image above to magnify)Overview:The Celtics own the best record in the NBA at 66-16 while the Hawks are 29 games worse than that mark. Boston set the record for biggest turnaround from one season to the next after winning just 24 games in 2006-2007 after Paul Pierce missed nearly half the season due to injury. Behind the leadership of Kevin Garnett and coaching of Doc Rivers and his assistants, the Celtics posted the fourth best scoring margin (+10.3) in NBA history, and the three teams that had better margins all had Michael Jordan on their rosters. On the offensive end, Pierce led the charge with Garnett and Allen not far behind. Also, Rajon Rondo has improved an extraordinary amount this year and is a future All-Star. John Hollinger of ESPN Insider rates Rondo as the best defensive point guard in the league based on his statistics. Furthermore, the depth Boston has is probably the best in the league. They've had solid production from Posey, House, Leon Powe, and G...

NBA Playoff Preview: Nuggets vs. Lakers
2008-04-20 06:10:00
(Click on the image above to magnify)Overview:The Lakers started the year with Kobe Bryant complaining about the roster, and then a couple months into the season the Lakers were playing well, and Andrew Bynum had become a force. However, Bynum became injured, and at the trade deadline the Lakers acquired Pau Gasol to compliment Lamar Odom in the front court. The Bynum-less Lakers then went on to post the best record in the Western Conference, behind a rejuvenated Kobe Bryant, production from Gasol and Odom, as well as consistent production from the bench. The Nuggets are the 8 seed in the West, but just 7 games separate them from the Lakers. Denver has had a very good offensive season led by Iverson and Anthony, while Marcus Camby put in a very good season as his career winds down. The Nuggets haven't really been able to stop anybody from scoring this season, which is trouble given the offensive fire power the Lakers possess and that guy named Kobe Bryant.Prediction: Lakers in 5

NBA Playoff Preview: Raptors vs Magic
2008-04-19 07:58:00
(Click the image above to magnify)Overview:The Raptors went just 4-6 in their final 10 games, while the Magic finished 6-4, while resting players as necessary since playoff positioning was not really a question. The Raptors had a better win-loss record a year ago, but have played well this year nonetheless. Toronto features a team with a good offense (100.2 PPG) and a decent defense (97.3 PPG). They have a star in Chris Bosh, a star-in-the-making in T.J. Ford, and a decent bench with Jose Calderon, Jason Kapono, and Carlos Delfino headlining the second unit. The Magic have had a very good season with 52 wins in the Eastern Conference. Hedo Turkoglu has really stepped up for the Magic, while Rashard Lewis hasn't lived up to his contract. At a very young age, Dwight Howard has shown that he is one of the best players in the league and is probably the best center in the league now that Amare Stoudemire is only playing power forward. Prediction: Magic in 6

NBA Playoff Preview: Cavaliers vs Wizards
2008-04-19 05:52:00
(Click the image above to make it larger)Overview:The Cavaliers have not played well since the trade that brought Delonte West, Ben Wallace, and Wally Szczerbiak to Cleveland. The Wizards , meanwhile, have finished the season strong and finally have Gilbert Arenas back with the team. Arenas has only played 19 games this season, but is averaging nearly 20 PPG, though that number is skewed since he did start 8 games.Furthermore, an interesting stat for both of these teams is that they both allowed more points than they scored. We saw what happened to the Heat last who won over 40 games, but were outscored all season. They got swept in the first round.Last year, LeBron James was a man possessed throughout the playoffs, until his team faced a dominant San Antonio team in the NBA Finals. That said, Cleveland has really struggled since the trade, while Washington has been playing well.Prediction: Cleveland in 6

Oden to Miss 2007-08 Season
2007-09-13 22:16:00
After everything seemed to be looking up for the Portland Trailblazers, things took a turn for the worse today when it will be announced that Greg Oden is going to have knee surgery and likely miss his rookie season. This is the same surgery that transformed Chris Webber from one of the league's best athletes and most versatile players to a slow, immobile big man who gets by on jump shooting and passing. Now before Portland fans begin to panic, let's remember that Webber was much older when he had this surgery and a complete recovery is possible, just ask Amare Stoudemire. According to a report by ESPN.com, the damage is relatively minor and a full recovery is expected in six to twelve months. Nonetheless, this puts a damper on a team that many were looking forward to watching, with Oden joining Rookie of the Year Brandon Roy and a number of other talented young players. If Oden is able to fully recover, this may not turn out so badly for the Blazers in the long run. There would hav...

One Mavs Fan Finally Comes to a Harsh Realization
2007-08-29 00:00:00
Written by my younger brother this morning...I apologize for the tardiness and delay of this blog post, but recently it has been morally reprehensible and taboo in the city of Dallas to speak of the Mavs? premature postseason exit. After months of recuperation, Mavs fans are prepared to ?face the music? and answer any questions the nation asks. I, a college student outside the state of Texas, am constantly burdened by the aged old question, ?man what happened to your boys (Dallas Mavericks)?? Although sometimes worded differently, the questions meaning and significance is always identical. For months Mavs supporters had no answer, we could only sit in the corner quietly while being ridiculed by the nations NBA viewers. I knew it was bad when a Celtics fan had the audacity to ridicule my Mavericks, ?we might tank games, but ya?ll are choke artists,? the fan boasted.Mavs fans are coming out of hibernation, and are prepared to accept one horrifying and gut churning fact: Dirk will not ...
