Martial arts take a Western turn
2008-03-13 00:00:00
"The golf cases propped up against the walls are full of swords, daggers and the occasional bit of chain mail. The halls of the community center ring with the clash of steel, the thud of shields and the quick snip-snip of rapiers. The books quoted are as often as not in medieval German or Latin. Welcome to a Western martial arts conference. Not a cowboy or lariat in sight. Western in this case is Western European, as opposed to the better-known Asian variety."

Fight Choreography:How Karate Works
2008-03-12 00:00:00
Fight Choreography is possibly one of the most difficult aspects of film production in my opinion. This summer I am going to do some fight choreography for my movie Ninja Kai and I am not looking forward to twirling a heavy piece of metal attached to a chain around my head. It has been 2 years since I have actively engaged in Martial Arts so this is going to be a fun experience.

Recent Ramblings of the UFC President
2008-03-12 00:00:00
Dana White on CBS-EliteXC deal: “Nah. See everybody is out there yapping like they know what they are talking about because they think I wanted too much control and all this (expletive) like the HBO deal. We had a couple of issues with the HBO deal, but nothing negative, nothing that … whatever. I’m still talking to HBO.” “The CBS deal didn’t work for us. At the end of the day, listen, when you are talking about a show like ProElite or any of these other shows, they will give up their right (expletive) to get on television. They will give away everything to be on TV.”

Drunken Boxing With The Stars
2008-03-09 00:00:00
Eight Drunken Immortals [style] stresses several unusual martial qualities. It embodies more joint- and body-folding techniques than any other external or internal/external martial art. It imparts the ability to fold the body like a rag doll, thus enabling the practitioner to both block and attack from quite unpredictable angles with every part of the body, including the buttocks and back. The extreme body folding skill of the Drunken boxers makes it virtually impossible to apply joint locks on them.

An Overview of Okinawan Kobudo
2008-03-09 00:00:00
Today most people involved in the martial arts and even many of the general public have become aware of some of the martial arts weapons. Probably, the most widely known of the Okinawan weapons is the Nunchaku, which received its notoriety in numerous martial arts movies during the 1970's and 80's. Others may to a lesser extent be aware of the Bo, Tunfa and Sai. However, there exist a number of other significant weapons to traditional Okinawan Kobudo that the knowledge of which is limited to the most serious Karate/Kobudo practitioners.

Defend University on the Unexpected
2008-03-09 00:00:00
great quote, and short post which reinforces what I've been saying for a long time, along with such luminaries as Hock Hochheim - train to deal with the untrained! Money quote: I once saw Royce Gracie almost get KO'ed in a seminar (this was during the height of his UFC fighting days) when a raw beginner did a completely unexpected move and kneed Royce right in the face. The kid was not being malicious, it's just that he had no idea of what to do next so he did something completely unpredictable. Expect the unexpected.

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi 101
2008-03-09 00:00:00
One of the things I really like about BJJ is the very loose idea of what is acceptable attire. I'm not a very fashionable guy, but for whatever reason, I like buying new gis. I like looking at the different styles that are out there, and checking out what everyone has going on. The following article is primarily for any of my friends out there who either don't train in martial arts or who train, perhaps, in some other style and are curious about what differences exist.

Over Enthusiasm
2008-02-19 00:00:00
I recently wrote about enthusiasm in training, and how to combat the barriers that keep us away. But it works both ways - it's possible to have too much enthusiasm, especially in the early days of training.

Enthusiasm
2008-02-05 00:00:00
Enthusiasm for training comes and goes. Sometimes it's the plateau effect well known in sporting and coaching circles. This happens every so often when it seems nothing can go right for you, or you get the feeling you're not getting anywhere. It's a time for assimilating what you know before moving on. See it as a sign of progress.

Speculations on Karate History

The following is from Dr. Bruce D. Clayton's Shotokan's Secret: The Hidden Truth Behind Karate 's Fighting Origins. Interested readers should note that I consider Dr. Clayton's book a mix of fascinating information and speculation, and that I do not consider a number of his speculations correct. However, that does not mean that none of the speculations are correct, and some of the information he notes in the making of those speculations is both interesting and enlightening.
