Spring 2008 Henry Seminar
0000-00-00 00:00:00
I'm back from the Spring 2008 Henry seminar. It was a blast as usual. Well attended - I got to see some of the Tennessee aikidoka that I don't get to see much. Everyone learned a lot. Here are some short highlight clips from the weekend.

A Karate student should not...
0000-00-00 00:00:00
A Karate student should not... try harder in the dojo than he does at work or school. show more respect to his Sensei than he does to his parents. clean the dojo but neglect his own home. travel the world for training but not take his wife anywhere. forget all the people who helped him to attain skill in Karate. forget that Karate is practiced in daily life. forget that what he does reflects on his Sensei, his dojo, and the art. speak unkindly of other martial arts or martial artists. forget that there is always more to learn. If Karate training makes a student better at self defense only, it has value, but that value is limited. If Karate training makes him better at life, it has unlimited value.

Trojan Kai and The Karate Pete
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Tomorrow-QB looks at our first opponent, and yikes almighty the Hoos are in for a rude visit. Apparently, the only way to get to the Trojan s’ don’t-worry-everyone-we’ve-got-this defense is to have … wait for it … a mobile QB: The only offenses that have really given SC any kind of trouble the last few seasons are of the spread variety, run with athletic quarterbacks - Texas in the `06 Rose Bowl, Oregon and Illinois last year, if you want to stretch it (the Illini did have 445 yards; their problems in the end were mainly defensive).

Roland Barthes vs. Mixed Martial Arts
0000-00-00 00:00:00
The May issue of The Walrus features a story I wrote with Jan Dutkiewicz on mixed martial arts. I promised when we went to press that I would write a blog post on the subject of Barthes and MMA, which will hopefully not prove as obnoxious as it sounds. I’m also not sure I can top Chuck Liddell (pounding Randy Couture in photo) on the subject, but I’ll give it a shot. Like*As part of my and Ed Keenan’s ongoing efforts to reclaim the footnote from D1a2v3i4d5 F6o7s8t9e*r& W!a†lπl∑a√c≈e©, we’re taking things up a notch. Henceforth, sidenotes. most people with a Bachelor of Arts degree, I’ve spent most of my adult life trying to forget about Barthes. I’d largely succeeded at this task, until a former intern here, much better read than me,*Except for the works of Richard Scarry, which I am the world’s foremost expert on. It was I, you probably know, who first explicated the subtext of his masterwork, What Do People Do All Day? Turns out they mostly sit around ...

Josh Waitzkin on chess and taichi
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Wow, this is a fascinating interview with the guy who was the factual basis for the movie, Searching for Bobby Fisher. Josh Waitzkin fell somewhat out of love with chess and got into taichi. Eventually reconciling his problems with chess, he came to equate the two arts as the same thing. In the end of this interview he talks about a fascinating perceptual thing that goes on in the martial arts - time dilation. I'm ordering the book he's hyping in this video because it sounds super interesting and right up my alley.

Those Evil Atheists…
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Since decommissioning my “other” blog I’ve pretty much let most of the topics surrounding religion, belief, and no belief pass. I’ve come to terms and have reached closure with the fact that I am no longer religious. I was a practicing Christian for at least 20 years, I’ve professionally reviewed books on the topic, and I even had part of this interplay between religion and secularism as a would-be thesis topic. So what happened? In short: I got tired of it all.

Qigong and Energetic Arts a Danger to Health?
0000-00-00 00:00:00

Armbars for kids
0000-00-00 00:00:00
The following is an awesome video of some kids doing judo. I don't especially like having kids this age working chokes and armbars, but that might just be my particular prejudice. The jiujitsu guys train kids to do this stuff and they swear it doesn't tear up kids. I personally only teach throwing and positional wrestling to any student of any age below about green belt because I feel the positional skills are prerequisite to good choking and joint manipulation skills. But in any case, these particular kids are doing a fabulous job practicing and demonstrating these skills. I learned a thing or two myself that I intend to put on Rob next week (so Rob, don't watch this video or you might spoil my fun ;-)

Kata & Water
0000-00-00 00:00:00
If we look at modern Southern Chinese systems (e.g. Hung Gar, Wing Chun, Pak Mei, etc.) their kata execution appears much more "karate-like" in comparison to other Chinese systems. The Southern Chinese systems are premised on protecting the centre-line, advancing in the face of attack and deflecting, adhering and damaging the offending limb and/or the opponent. Hence movements tend to be shorter and slightly truncated.

Hazing death in Korea
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Police arrested four college students from Yong In University in Gyeonggi yesterday on suspicion that a hazing beating resulted in a fellow student¡¯s death. The arrests came 22 days after a Yong In freshman, Kang Jang-ho, died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Investigators indicted the four without physical detention after concluding that they were responsible for Kang¡¯s death, police said. In the middle of a Valentine¡¯s Day judo training session for newcomers in the school gymnasium, Kang, a martial arts major, suddenly fell into a coma, school authorities announced. Kang died March 4. He was 19. In the statement the university released following Kang¡¯s death, school authorities said only that the student suddenly felt dizzy after finishing a backward rolling break-fall move in the training session, then collapsed on the mat.

A Comparative Study of Throwing Speed
0000-00-00 00:00:00
The aim of this work was to verify if there was a difference in throwing speed performance between heavier and lighter weight categories in judo. Sixteen judoists aged 18±3 years-old, eight considered in the light weight category (-73 kg) and eight considered in the heavy weight category (+73 kg) participated in the study. A force/velocity test was used to determine the anaerobic power, strength, and pedal speed for each subject. Three trials of Nage-komi exercise, each comprised of 15s sets of Osoto-gari, Uchi-mata and Ippon-seoi-nage throws were performed by each subject to ascertain throwing speed. Throws within the sets were intersected by one period of 3 minute passive rest while the trials were separated by one period of 10 minute passive rest. Heart rate and the greatest number of throws within each set were measured for three trials. We used an ANOVA to compare the number of throws between the two weight categories and a "Student" test when the difference was significant. A...

“Changes ahead”

Change is a foot at Learn Martial Arts Online! I’ve decided to move ahead with completing an interactive online training course to learn some good self-defence moves. Bare with me through this as until it starts to make money it will look a little rough around the edges, if it becomes profitable I’ll make sure the course has all the bells and whistles.
