Will the real Big Ten champion please stand up?
2007-11-12 17:03:00 Well, it’s pretty clear as to why all of the fuss was for Ohio St. and Illinois–because everyone smelled the upset possibility. But did anyone really anticipate Wisconsin handling Michigan as they did? It’s just one of those years for the Big 10–you can say that parity is what is happening there, but I see otherwise. Illinois is the feel-good team of the league this year after basically being nothing short of awful the last several years. Ron Zook was cast off as soon as he basically lost a game in Florida and has rebuilt the program nicely. Indiana also has looked pretty good this year, riding the emotion of losing coach Terry Hoeppner to cancer and going by his motto “play 13″. But other than that, things have been kind of ugly for the Big 10. Notwithstanding the huge rise in talent in the Pac 10 and the Big 12, and as always the SEC, the big meanies of the big 10, Ohio St. and Michigan, haven’t really struck all that much fear in teams. Georgia-Auburn: The Classic Offense-Defense matchup
2007-11-10 19:27:00 Not many gave Georgia too much of a chance at being this good. Ranked #10 and coasting with 3 victories in a row, they’ve relied on a freshman running back and made some key plays at key times. (Duh). In the SEC, where dominance is something that doesn’t occur much, Georgia is still in the ... More About: College Football , Classic , Defense , Auburn
USC-Cal a little different than expected?
2007-11-10 15:17:00 Those of us who follow college football know about USC and their role as being the big bully–let’s just say the word “dynasty” has come up quite a bit during Pete Caroll’s tenure. Coming into the season, they were again put at the top of the heap–but this year there was that little smirk of ... More About: Diff
Jordan?s son takes the road less traveled
2007-11-09 22:16:00 If you are the son of Michael Jordan , you have the world at your fingertips–but you also have some monumental shoes to fill (including the ugly black and red ones from 1985 that should have been in the “Thriller” video). And if you are the son of Michael Jordan reading this blog, I’m blushing. Sorry–focus, ... More About: Road , The Road
Cardinals, Blue Devils, and lawsuits?Oh my!
2007-11-09 15:14:00 How often is it that we get to see one school sue another for not playing it? Not often. But in the sue-happy world that we live in, it’s not a surprise that Louisville filed a 450K suit against Duke for weaseling out of a contract that started in 2002, after the Cardinals plunked the ... What in the name of Appalachian State is going on?
2007-11-08 19:48:00 Exhibition games are supposed to be tune ups. Not only are they supposed to be tune ups, they usually result in an embarrassing score for the losing team. So when Grand Valley State beat #8 Michigan St in one of these games, the collective gasp was deafening (I know, that doesn’t make sense, just work ... Buckeyes are 15 pt. faves vs. Illini?so why all the fuss?
2007-11-08 00:20:00 The biggest game of the year in any Big Ten season is Michigan-Ohio St. There’s usually big hype, trash talking, and several ESPN interviews with non-essential people. But…that’s not until next week. Ohio State is more than a two touchdown favorite versus Illinois this week–but there’s a lot of discussion about this game. Why? Last year, ... Louisville-West Virginia: Two teams going two different directions
2007-11-07 21:39:00 Wow, what in the world happened to Louisville? After starting out ranked #10 in the preseason, the Cardinals haven’t looked exactly the part–not even close, actually. At 5-4, the defense is as sieve-like as it has ever been, and what’s next up for them? Only the third-best offense in the country, West Virginia . The Mountaineers, ranked ... Can Gillispie lead UK back to promised land?
2007-11-06 21:57:00 For years, the UK faithful basically worshipped Tubby Smith. Here was a guy that was able to come in amidst some pretty down years for the Wildcats and take them not only back up into a power team, but won a national championship in the process. So when he announced that he was leaving for–Minnesota??? ... More About: Back , Land , Lead , Gill
This just in: McFadden is McGood
2007-11-05 18:55:00 Last year, I watched Darren McFadden and the upstart Arkansas Razorbacks play against some pretty good SEC defenses and made them look plain silly. His ability to slash as well as run north-south had me thinking Arby’s…I mean, er, flashes of Barry Sanders. McFadden was a man’s man running back, a take no prisoners type ...
My, how the mighty have fallen: Navy ends ridiculous streak
2007-11-04 21:53:00 We all know that every team tries to schedule a couple of cupcakes every year to pad their stats. Many times it is teams that come from mid-majors or even from fledgling schools just looking for some big paydays. Either way, you can count on a powerhouse beating up on the little guys in literally ... More About: College Football , Notre Dame , Navy , Charlie Weis , Ridiculous
Saban Bowl 2007: Hide the women and children
2007-11-03 19:42:00 LSU fans circled the date on the schedule as soon as the announcement was made. Nick Saban , or “Benedict Arnold” as he’s known around Baton Rouge, signed a lucrative contract with Alabama , and you would have thought that he was the equivalent of Snidely Whiplash, curling his little moustache and snickering…muhahahahahaaaa. And now we’re here. It’s ... More About: Women , Children , College Football
Tar Heels #1 Preseason. In other news, Water?s wet.
2007-11-02 22:29:00 So they released the new preseason polls and shockingly, North Carolina was #1. Can you smell the sarcasm? Sure, UCLA was close-bythismuch. And even Memphis got in the act by garnering several first place votes. But still-come on. Is any one REALLY surprised that Roy Williams‘ crew ended up at the top? Of course not. I ... Hard to type with all of this egg on my face?
2007-11-02 13:15:00 Real smooth, Tim. Your first post about the Hokies and Yellow Jackets blows up in your face as VA Tech destroys them. Nice. Before you write me off as some idjit with no clue, I hope at least you can see where I was coming from–obviously I discounted the heart of the Hokies and their ability ... Is Kansas all that and a bag of chips?
2007-11-01 18:51:00 Toto, I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore. Sorry, folks, couldn’t resist…but we are in Kansas–can you believe it? The last time Kansas was mentioned with college ball it was circling about Bill Self and what his team would be doing this year. But–wow–the football team is suddenly getting all the press, with an impressive 8-0 ... More About: Chips , Ansa
Hokies and Yellow Jackets to square off in Hotlanta
2007-11-01 18:36:00 Virginia Tech, who suddenly decided to play “not to lose” instead of playing to win in the second half against Boston College last week, makes a trip to face much-wounded Georgia Tech in a Thursday night battle. The question is–does anyone really care? Two schools that have “Tech” in their name doesn’t exactly stir the ... More About: Jackets , Hokies , Yellow , Yellow Jackets , Yellow Jacket
