Coral Reef Squadron red-flagged
2008-05-04 07:30:00
Coral Reef Squadron red-flaggedAs reported earlier about the artificial reef in Phuket, which was about to be set up tomorrow, the procedures had to be halted due to bad weather conditions and is currently postponed to November.PHUKET CITY: The sinking of 10 decommissioned military aircraft – nicknamed the Coral Reef Squadron – to create Thailand’s largest artificial reef has been postponed until November, Tourism Authority of Thailand South Region 4 Office Director Suwalai Pinpradub announced today.Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, K. Suwalai said that the strong winds and large waves that have arrived with the rainy season monsoon have now made it too dangerous to sink the aircraft in Bang Tao Bay.The operation was set to begin today and wrap up with Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat and Thai celebrities attending the final-day festivities on Monday.A date has yet to be set for the operation to continue, K. Suwalai said.In the meantime, the four Doug...

PADI Specialty of the month May 2008; Multilevel and Computer diver
2008-05-04 04:48:00
PADI Specialty of the month May 2008 ; Multilevel and Computer diverIt's that time of the month again, time to high light PADI's specialty of the month. This time around it's the Multilevel and computer diver specialty.During Instructor training some students aren't too enthusiastic about this specialty, for the reason that they think that the Wheel is not interesting enough. What they seem to forget though, is that this specialty actually covers computer diving as well and has a lot more theoretical knowledge development than most instructors wish for. Anybody for some half times and M-Values?Do you want to maximize your dive times? (Of course). Want to get the most out of your dive computer and The WheelTM? (Naturally). Then the Multilevel Diver Specialty course is for you.In this course, you learn how to plan dives that extend your bottom time by crediting you for slower nitrogen absorption when you ascend to a shallower depth. That’s the way you really dive, after all. You...

April 2008 IDC finished
2008-04-11 16:42:00
April 2008 IDC finishedIt's all official; during fantastic weather conditions on Koh Samui Melita and Ulrike have completed all Performance Requirements for the IDC and are off to Koh Tao in a few days to start their PADI IE program, which should see them being certified as PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors. If you've been following the blog, especially the updates on this April 08 IDC, you'll miss Joe's name, that's right, since after the AI part of the IDC, he decided to wait until the next IDC before he continues with the OWSI part, since he felt that he wasn't prepared well enough. Good luck to him!Marcus passed his IDCS course during this IDC, congrats Marcus! In the meantime, keep your eyes posted for IE updates.Camille

Swedish girl dies from jellyfish sting on Koh Lanta
2008-04-05 11:18:00
Swedish girl dies from jellyfish sting on Koh LantaHaving just posted a blog entry last month about the presence of box jelly fish in Thailand, this week a Swedish 10 year old girl died from jellyfish stings on Koh Lanta, although there's no reports of box jelly fish in this tragic event, it just shows how dangerous these animals can be.My condolences for the family of the child. Here's the full story as reported in the The Local, Sweden's news in English paper, as reported on 3rd April 2008;A Swedish girl died on Thursday morning in a swimming accident on the tourist island of Koh Lanta in Thailand. The girl went into anaphylactic shock--a severe allergic reaction--after being stung by a jellyfish,” said a nurse to the Aftonbladet newspaper. The 10-year-old girl was swimming in the waters off of Klong Dao Beach when she was stung by the jellyfish. She suffered a quick, hypersensitive reaction and was taken to hospital where doctors worked for an hour and a half but couldn’t save...

IDCS course started for the April 2008 IDC
2008-03-30 17:00:00
IDCS course started for the April 2008 IDCMarcus who just completed his IDC in February this year, has come back to complete his IDCS course during the April '08 IDC.He completed more than 15 Instructor Specialties with me after the last IDC, including the Wreck diver Specialty during the February Pattaya trip and back in Hainan, he managed to get 25 divers certified at various PADI levels, so he's all set for his MSDT level, a prerequisite for the IDCS course. Here's Marcus in action during his 5 Theory exams, a part of his IDCS course. Marcus sailed through all parts of today's training, including a hand full of presentations, presented by me and an evaluation learning test. Tomorrow the IDC prep course will start, so stay focused and Marcus will compete more parts of his IDCS course, like a Confined Water presentation and a Knowledge Development presentation. The interesting part is that he needs to score higher scores than during his actual IDC. Don't drown on your Thailand holiday
2007-11-06 04:00:00
This is excellent reading!Having just joined the Thorn Tree forum, the official Lonely Planet travel forum, where lots of good travel advise and information can be found, I stumbled over a prolific poster there, Tezza, who runs a couple of blogs, one about beaches and islands in Thailand and on this specific blog, he has a great post about not drowning during your Thai holiday. You may think, what is all this about and it won't concern me, but have a look and read up on it, he talks about rip tides and undertows and this should be required reading for everybody visiting Thailand, especially during the rainy season, when the likelihood of these rip tides is greatest! This includes you potential Divemasters and Dive Instructors out there, read up on this! It's a subject I was about to write about somewhere in the near future, since the rainy season is about to start, or should I rather say, started already with a vengeance, see my Samui weather blog for more info, and a few weeks ag...

Specialty of the month November 2007
2007-11-05 13:44:00
Equipment is this month' Specialty.Equipment seems to be the right choice, since in Europe the diving is almost over in the northern countries and with this Specialty, one can still offer a course to keep divers interested. Here in Thailand, this course can be taught all year round but right now, with lots of rain and relative low visibility during the rainy season, it may well be a Specialty, that although it keeps you out of the water, it's still diving related. If you want to find out about how your dive gear works, then this Specialist course is for you. This course familiarizes you with the operation and maintenance of your dive gear. The more you know about how your gear works, the more comfortable you are with it, the more performance you get from it and the better you can care for it.This Specialist course is not an equipment repair program bit it does give you general knowledge of dive gear (theory, principles and organisation) and maintenance procedures amongst others.Inte...

More Gas Blending
2007-11-04 07:13:00
Today one more Gas Blender Instructor saw the light.Stuart took op the opportunity to complete the DSAT Gas Blender and DSAT Gas Blender Instructor course before he took off to Phuket, later today. Here is Stuart, sweating it out during the Gas Blender exam, 50 questions and a passing rate of 80% is required, which he managed easily. Stuart at the controls. During the exam, there are some questions that need to be answered with a DSAT Gas Mix Calculator, a CD-Rom that comes with the manual(s).Stuart's interest was peeked for this course after he completed the Nitrox Instructor course with me. He was already certified as a Nitrox diver. Being a Nitrox Instructor however, is a prerequisite for the DSAT Gas Blender Instructor course. Showing off his filling skills. Tanks everywhere and Stuart being happy to fill them up. A picture of the boss and Stu at the end of the day. It was fun Stuart and hope to see you back for your IDCS course next year!Camille

Instructor Specialty Training in progress
2007-11-02 12:47:00
Since three days we're busy conducting Instructor Specialty Training with Ivo and Elliott. Two days ago we started at Chaweng Beach with the Navigation Specialty which we conducted in low visibility, which actually benefits this specialty and really puts extra demands on your navigational skills.Yesterday we conducted two Search & Recovery training dives to complete this Instructor specialty at Japanese Garden around Koh Nangyuan, near to Koh Tao.Here's Ivo at board of the Seatran ferry, on the way to Koh Tao today, where we conducted a Deep dive (one out of two) and a Naturalist dive for the respective Instructor ratings. Here's a view on Koh Tao's main pier at Haad Rin. We conduct the majority of this set of Instructor Specialty Training around the various Koh Tao dive sites. Ivo logging his dive, during the lunch break. Tomorrow we'll be conducting another Deep dive and Elliott will conduct a Dry Suit dive.Elliott and Ivo during lunch. October PADI IE succesfully completed
2007-10-28 11:44:00
This edition of the PADI IE has been succesfully completed by all my candidates.Well done and congratulations to all of you for passing the PADI IE. During the IDC we had some pretty bad weather (see my Samui weather blog) but this IE was completed today under a blue sky, which made for a very well spirited day!The official PADI examiner on this occasion was Rob Scammell, who had to deal with 7 candidates. The IE started 26th October with an Orientation and the 5 Theory exams and a General Standards Exam. All my five candidates passed with good scores. The morning of the 27th started out in the classroom, where again, all my five candidates passed with high scores. On the 27th in the afternoon, confined water started, here's Rob with some candidates during confined water. Elliott after his Confined Water presentation, his grin tells it all, 3 down, one to go! Today saw the last part of this PADI IE, with the Open Water part. Here are all candidates for a briefing by Rob.After Rob...

DSAT Gas Blender Instructor Course
2007-10-26 18:06:00
Naz wanted to get the most of his stay on Samui. That's why he went to the Full Moon party on Koh Phangan tonight, but before he did that, he completed the DSAT Gas Blender course and the Gas Blender Instructor course with me, after already having successfully completed the IDCS course yesterday with the completion of the current IDC course. During the tank filling he did fall in love with one the tanks and we had to painfully separate him from the tanks. Part of the course is also Oxygen cleaning, where you clean equipment parts so they become oxygen compatible. This is Naz in front of the ultrasonic bath, the little white box next to him. This bath is used to clean equipment parts in vinegar/water solutions or Simple Green (hi Dave!) solutions by shaking the dirt loose. A filled Nitrox tank, by the master Naz himself! Congrats Naz, hope to see you back soon, it was fun!Camille
October 2007 IDC finished
2007-10-26 17:23:00
The current IDC running in October 2007 has been completed.Yesterday we went on the boat to Koh Tao to complete the Open Water section of the OWSI program of this IDC and that was the last segment of this IDC.It didn't start all that exciting with boat trips and such, first we started with more classroom presentations by both me and the candidates. Here we can see Ivo marching through one of his presentations. The OWSI program has 12 presentations by me and here Ivo, Andy and Stuart are writing something down in their respective PADI IDC Candidate Workbook. Elliott at full attention during one of the classroom presentations by one of his fellow IDC candidates. It wasn't only classroom that we completed, we had some action packed Confined Water Training as well. Here's Andy demonstrating how to clear a mask underwater, whilst Stuart and Elliott are his 'students'. During this IDC or rather the OWSI program, we experienced some extreme weather conditions for this time of the y...

Update on the current IDC, the AI part
2007-10-18 14:39:00
Tomorrow the AI (Assistant Instructor) part of the current IDC will be completed.Up till now we have consequently been busy during this IDC. All 4 candidates have completed 2 classroom presentations and 2 confined water presentations each and they sat through a good hand full of classroom presentations presented by me. On top of that they also completed and passed a skill circuit consisting of 20 skills in confined water.Besides an Open Water presentation, a General Standards exam and 5 dive related exams, which will be conducted tomorrow, they will be Assistant Instructors. Although, they only have one day off to enjoy their new status before they continue on with their OWSI program, so they eventually can pass the PADI IE. Here am I in action, trying to explain something to them, during one of my 7 classroom presentations. From left to right, Elliott, Ivo, myself, Stuart and Andy. This shows Andy during his first Knowledge Development presentation, in which, somehow he managed to r...

In December they're planning to participate in their own IDC, after they started with their Advanced Open Water course a couple of months ago, as part of their Advanced Open water through to Platinum IDC package. At the other side of the spectrum, Jan-Willem and Gideon just started their respective Divemaster course with me today (congrats to both for completing their EFR and Rescue diver courses!). A busy month ahead
2007-10-03 04:38:00
A busy month is looming ahead.A lot of people will be arriving this month to participate in various courses and I'm starting another IDC on September 13 with an IDCS course and the 14th the prep IDC will start. It looks like I'll be having 3 candidates and one IDCS with still an option of getting a 4th candidate in.On 27th September I welcomed Jan-Willem at Samui airport who's participating in the Advanced Open Water to Divemaster package. Yesterday Jan-Willem completed his Advanced course. Congrats!Today in the early afternoon, I'll be picking up Gideon, also from the Netherlands, just like Jan-Willem, Nienke (who just left for to Koh Tao to complete her MSDT internship) and Bas.Gideon is participating in the Rescue diver course to the Go Pro CDC package.Late last month, Rob arrived, who is doing the same package as Gideon, but on top of that, he's participating in some dive trips and the Master Scuba Diver course before starting his package.Next week Andy is coming back again...

Instructor Specialties after the IDC completed today
2007-09-26 13:59:00
Today, we completed the Instructor Specialties after the September IDC/IE.We, being Nienke and me. The Specialties that I taught Nienke where on Monday; Search & Recovery and Night diving. The Search & recovery dive turned out to be a very interesting dive by the amount of fish we encountered on Chaweng Beach, including a Lion fish, a fairly rare sight in the Gulf of Thailand. On Tuesday we took the Seatran ferry out to Koh Tao, where we switched to our own boat, the MV Waverunner. Here's a picture of the Waverunner's bow with Koh Nangyuan in the background whilst the boat is anchored in Japanese Garden. Here's Nienke relaxing at the end of the day on the Waverunner after two very nice and relaxing dives, in which we conducted a Naturalist and Navigation dive. Today we completed the Instructor Specialty training with two Deep dives as part of the Deep diving specialty at Sail Rock. Here's Nienke in action to prepare a 40 meter long rope, so it doesn't get entangled once we want t...

PADI IE September completed
2007-09-20 09:17:00
The September PADI IE has been completed. Both Nienke and Jeff did well. Nienke had almost straight 5's for all of her presentations and Jeff did also very well, except on the Open Water presentation where he had a problem with tying a sheet bend.On the picture from left to right; Thomas Knedlik, the PADI Examiner; Nienke Rakhorst from the Netherlands; Camille; Amit Padgaonkarn, IDCS and Jeff George from the UK.Congrats to all of you! During the IE, there was a PADI delegation visiting Koh Tao, with some high ranking guys. On the picture from left to right is Mark Spiers, head of sales for PADI AP; Henrik Nimb, vice president of PADI AP; myself and last but not least, Hans Ullrich, the Dutch regional manager for Thailand. It was 12 years ago when Henrik visited Koh Tao the last time, when he was an Examiner himself. He had a good time on Koh Tao and he enjoyed being back again and see the immense development that Koh Tao went through during the last 12 years with his own eyes.Camille

PADI IE September 2007 started
2007-09-18 10:37:00
The September PADI IE on Koh Tao started today. With a good 30 candidates, including Nienke and Jeff and 3 PADI Examiners, Thomas, George and Young Hee the IE kicked off at 1 pm with an introduction by the examiners, followed by the 5 exams and a General Standards and Procedures exam. The official PADI IE banner with Examiner Young Hee Hanis sitting below it. Young Hee is Korean but speaks also English and German and she's PADI Asia Pacific's Korean liaison. The Korean market is actually growing rapidly right now and it's very exciting to see it develop. This is how a PADI IE with over 30 nervous and excited candidates looks like moments before the IE Orientation kicks off.Nienke and Jeff after (very) successfully completing their exams part of the IE, together with Amit, who came over together with us for moral support. One down, three to go.Camille

IDCS Course started today
2007-09-05 15:36:00
Today I started an IDCS course.Amit, who participated in my 2nd IDC ever as a PADI Course Director in June 2003, started his IDCS course today. He worked all that time for one of our shops on Koh Samui, and started with us as an Open Water diver, from absolute scratch. Hats off Amit!!He found it's time for a change and found a job in his native India, on the Andaman Islands. It saves him a lot of trouble having to apply for the Thai visa each year. The IDCS course requires a bit of preparation and I always start this course a day before the prep IDC course starts. Participants need to pass 5 exams with an 80% passing grade, pass a General Standards Exam with 80%, present a Knowledge Development Presentation with a 4.0 out of 5.0 and the same for a Confined Water presentation and on top of that pass a Skill circuit in Confined Water of 20 skills, all before the actual IDC starts. Today we completed the exams which Amit passed easily and he sat through 4 IDCS presentations presented b...

Dive friends in Phuket
2007-08-31 17:08:00
During my recent visit to Phuket ,I took the opportunity to visit some friends who run dive shops in Phuket. Trip reports about my Phuket visit can be found on my Samui weather blog.First there's Chantal and Kevan who run Phuket Scuba Club in Kata, a very friendly South African couple who've been over 15 years in Thailand and still enjoy running a dive operation.Gary at Raya Dive rs, who runs dive ops in all major locations of the Western coast, from Kao Lak down to Koh Lanta.Last but not least there's Jamie at Sunrise divers in Karon who I tried to visit but due to bad weather the one day we were in Karon, it was raining cats and dogs, we'll keep sending emails instead of having a real life beer.If you ever end up on the Andaman coast and you happen to be a diver, make sure to visit one of these dive centers, I can highly recommend them.Camille

DSAT Gas Blender Instructor Course and Equipment Instructor Specialty
2007-08-23 19:16:00
The DSAT Gas Blender Instructor Course and Equipment Instructor SpecialtyWas on the program today (well, technically yesterday, the 23rd). The DSAT Gas Blender course consists of two parts, the Gas Blender part and the Gas Blender Instructor part. Laura is participating in this course and on the same day we were also looking into the Equipment Instructor Specialty, since filling Nitrox tanks is slow business with our partial pressure filling system and this gives plenty of time to combine these courses. One of the prerequisites for becoming a DSAT Gas Blender is that one is a PADI Nitrox diver and for the DSAT Gas Blender Instructor course that one is a Nitrox Instructor, both ratings held by Laura. Here she's looking at the ultrasonic bath, a machine that cleans, in this case, dive equipment, like regulator first stages, or in this case, helps to make equipment 'oxygen clean'.The Gas Blender course is a 1 day course which is very challenging, since setting up and operating a safe ...
