Brunei - CNY fresh and salt water casting
2007-03-01 04:04:00
It has been 2 weeks since my last positng. I think this was the longest gap ever since I started this blog few months back :-( Work has been crazy lately and I think my teeth is gonna crack soon. Can't wait for the next fishing trip!! Was back in Brunei for a week during Chinese New Year with 2 rods and 2 reels :-p Abu Revo SX with Berkley Series One, Ryobi Zauber 200 with Team Daiwa Light & Tough.Spent all my time casting around several places...Anduki, Muara Spit, Tunku Beach, Selasa Beach, Tutong River, etc etc. Covered all these places in 3 days. Unfortunately not a single taker although all the places look SO promising... So this posting will just be pictures of... sceneries... Here's my first-timer friend Mike casting nearby. Unfortunately, no taker too. Damn!! If he caught something, I'd have a fishing partner everytime I go back Brunei. He did get a brief heart beat raised when he hook on to a log :-p

2007-02-13 08:50:00
A trip filled with mixed feelings. Or to be more exact, it was a trip filled with many 'WFT' moments :-pIt was a highly anticipated trip due to the excessive publicity from FisherZone forum, Kingfisher and Rod & Line magazine, declaring this place the 'NEW GT PLAYGROUND', with front page of 20+kg GT and big fat Groupers. Overall it was a good trip, but I guess as always when you expectations are high, you are usually left disappointed with average results. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed myself although there were quite a number of hiccups/'WTF" here and there.Firstly, i was so busy over the week that I have no time to really plan and pack my equipments. The moment everyone on the boat started unpacking their equipments, I felt so under powered!! There were gigantic Saltigas, Jiggers, ATCs, etc etc with PE 6 - 7 rods, with jigs ranging between 150g - 400g. And there I was sitting at one corner, unpacking my PE 1.8 - PE 5 rods (PE 1.8 Extreme Anglers Custom, PE 3-5 Tenryu JigZam, P...

SQ Shopping Trip - Boga Grip 130
2007-02-08 04:48:00
This is where you retract the jaw either with your thumb or index or any other fingers you prefer :-p Definitely smoother than some other lippers that I've tried.Very comfortable grip. I think it's non-slip too. Also bought a holder separately...hmm...red again... Here's an extract from the user manual - The model 130 Boga Grip handles fish by encompassing the fish’s lower jawbone and will easily handle 30 pound fish of most species. However it is not intended to be used on fish that lets say would be dangerous to lip gaff eg billfish and sharks. The Boga Grip features 4 functions acting together that allow it to work nearly flawlessly. First, the jaws are arranged such that the weight of the fish will cause the jaws to shut even tighter. Secondly it has a locking mechanism that keeps the jaw in their tightest position. Thirdly it has a swiveling motion that eliminates the torque a spinning fish may apply. Fourthly it has a shock absorber that dampens a fish’s attempt to get f...

SQ Shopping Trip
2007-02-05 04:51:00
Went down to Singapore over the weekend to do some tackle browsing and shopping. I must say, really like how many of their tackle shops are located around Beach Road; Anglers Outfitters, Lure Haven, Angler's Hut, Joes, etc etc. and many more.Took a bus down to Puduraya Thursday morning, and once I reached there, heard some uncle shouting 'Singapore JB!! Singapore JB!! Singapore JB!!'. Immedately asked him what's the schedule and pricing like. After that, went for lunch and bought some SGDs, and waited for another friend to arrive. We took the 2pm bus and arrived at Golden Mill Complex, SQ, at around 6:30pm. The ride was very comfortable as it was a 18 seater bus/coach with reclining seat/leg support/foot rest; price RM35.And the best part is Golden Mill Complex is at the tip of Beach Road. So you just need to walk upwards for 5 minutes and you will reach the 1st of many tackle shops around this area!!Anyway, didn't buy any major item. Just bought some accessories and tools. Her...

2007 Inventory Check
2007-01-23 01:43:00
With the arrival of 2007, it’s that time again to do a quick inventory check. Objective, to identify wish list items for 2007 :-DBut before we start, just want to shed some light on my recent changed of perception on expensive tiny reels. In the past, I’ve always felt that spending a bomb on tiny reels is a complete waste of money and bloody stupid. Because what difference are you going to get from a RM1700 tiny Stella to a RM170 Zauber when you are casting for haruan/PBs or even the fresh water tiger Toman? Some say for the smoothness in every spin, some say smooth drag, some say solid construction and the list goes on. I’ll be like “HELLO!?!??! Are you bloody casting for Peacock Bass or DOGTOOTH TUNA in the BLOODY pond/stream!?!?”. The reason for saying that is because to me THEN, an expensive reel (Stella, Saltiga, VS, etc) is only necessary when you are fishing for monsters like Dogtooth Tuna, Amberjack, GT, etc etc.Reason for that, DURABILITY.Yeah yeah yeah….there ar...

Extreme Anglers Custom - PE1.8 Jigging Rod
2007-01-16 06:37:00
Just got back my jigging rod from Kenny Chee of 'Fook Soon'. Sent it in a month ago to replace the ring which broke during my Kedah trip.**FLASHBACK**The trip started off slow with everyone casting kembong for tengirri while I was the only one jigging. After half an hour of jigging, I noticed some commotion on the surface not far ahead and I flipped my jig pass the boil. Let it sink shortly and I started jigging, and STRIKE! :-) 1st catch of the day, Queenfish/Talang. Unhook the fish, flip and jig again, STRIKE! Another Queenfish/Talang successfully landed. I was the only one enjoying the frenzy as no one else had their jigs ready. But of course, after landing 3/4 fishes, I already have jigging neighbours on my left and right. So I move to the back of the boat to cast side way out. And this is when it happened. The ring broke when I flipped out the jig!! Worst part was, it was a 2-day trip, and that was my only jigging stick. Am not really sure why it broke, but I think most likely...

Of all the lures bought last week, only 1 had a hit; Berkley. Was trying everything in my tackle box except the 'rattle snake' the whole morning. Gave up went back to the Yozuri Rattl'N Vibe after lunch as the haruans just don't want to take them. Seriously need to improve my presentation techniques. Landed 9 in total myself but only took pictures of 2 of them; 1 cos finally landed with a different lure, another cos it was big. Didn't take pictures of the rest as they all look the same...same fish...same lure...boring... The biggest one...at 3kg.Side entertaintment for the day; Red Phoenix/Tilapia at 2kg.Overall catch for 3 anglers - 16 vs 9 vs 8

1 rod - Lemax Pistol Grip 1 reel - Abu Garcia Revo SX 1 lure - Yozuri Rattl' n Vibe 1 line - 15lbs Power Pro1 Leader - Sufix Invinsiline 15lbs 1 angler - KY 1 species - HaruanI have no idea how many in total was landed in total. But the pictures below were just around 60% of the day's catch. (And no they are not the same fish! :-p) Of all the lures, the 'rattle snake' has proven to be the most productive! And not just with the 'haruans'. Even when I was at Air Kuning, the PBs were very drawn by it too. In summary, very fun trip with many takes. Good place to 'use & abuse' your tackle. It was a bit awkward at first with the new rod as I've never used a pistol grip before, so the short grip took a while to get use to. But after several casts and 'battles', it was fun fun fun all the way. Before I bought the rod, a friend commented that pistol grip lacks power in setting hook (due to the short grip) and tiring during fish fighting (again due to the short grip). But I found it...

Merpati, Sarawak - (VI) - Catch Report Pt II
2006-12-24 17:09:00
Spent 100% of my fishing time jigging during the entire trip. From observation, the BLUE jigs seems to be more productive with the AJs. We were jigging mostly at depth of 100m and more, so most of the jigs were above 200grams. Here are some of the Tricks of the Trade -- Use heavy jigs so your jig goes down FAST! And get ready to drop once the boat is anchored. It's 'FIRST COME FIRST SERVE' with the AJs. Everytime we re-anchored the boat, we will have at least 2 hookups right after. - During jig retrieval, pause for 1 to 2 seconds after 5 or 7 jigs. Most of our takes were during the pause. In fact, my biggest AJ was hooked up when I stopped to rest my arm. While resting, I felt 3 very light jerks and it was a one-way ticket right after that for 5 minutes!!- Do not overglow your jig. It freaks them out. Unless you are at some virgin fishing grounds.- When things slow down, hook on a slice of meat to your jig. The bigger the slice the merrier. Here's my first and smallest Amberjack...

Merpati, Sarawak - (V) - Catch Report Pt I

Overall catch was very fruitful with Amberjacks being very co-operative.Here's the most 'happening' angler of all, with the MOST fish landed, BIGGEST amberjack jigged, and MOST fish hooked with 1 jig. Presenting Albert from Miri!!These are the 2 AJs landed with 1 jig by Albert. Damn he is on fire!!Another AJ by Albert. Fellow angler from JB, with a Kelisi, with bottom fishing. Here's a virgin jigger with his very first Amberjack and very first fish caught on Jig. His legs were trembling MAXIMUMLY when fighting the fish. At the initial hookup, I was sitting down having a break. And when I saw the bent on his rod, he was not wearing a fighting belt. I jumped up and ran to him while unhooking my belt and hook it on his waist. And cos my belt was quite big and he quite skinny, I had to hold on to the belt from the back the entire time as it was slipping down. Here's Bruce with his Big eye. Bruce again with his Dogtooth Tuna.Wah with his Big Eye

Introducing the chef of CC - JAMs!!Food was excellent througout the trip. On average, we have 5 meals daily - breakfast, lunch, tea break, dinner & supper. Damn I don't even eat so much on land back home. Here's some pictures of our main meals ie. lunch and dinner. Every meal we have chicken wings but was cooked differently - deep fried, sweet and sour, curry, soy, etc. Vege and fish is a definite item. And of course we have other dishes like sweet and sour eggs, fried egg with sausages, etc etc. Breakfast was fried mee and kuaw teow. Fried and ready before you even wake up. On the last day, our dinner was BBQ :-D We have chicken wings, lamb chop, sausages, french fries, cucumber, vegs, etc etc. Unfortunately and fortunately, we don't need to grill anything ourselves. Just sit and wait and eat.Lets talk about tea break and supper. One of our supper was fried rice which was normal. What was not normal was one of our tea break. Shortly after lunch on the 2nd day, around 2pm, Jams o...

Maldives (V) - Catch Rpt
2006-12-18 04:46:00
I forgot it was a fishing trip...so here's the catch report :-sI think we set the record for the worst ever fishing trip to Maldives :-) I caught the biggest on Jig and Pop out of the entire trip. Caught 2 more Baraccudas on Jig, but WAYtoo tiny to even snap a pic. Of course, the biggest overall of the trip came from Bottom (big Ray and Shark) by the other kakis. As for myself, I only caught a baby shark and 1 unstoppable train for 5 minutes with Bottom. Conclusion, do not go to Maldives in December. Best time is Feb - Apr!! As for boat and organiser, pass if you can. There are much nicer boats in Maldives and we are definitely taking one of those on our NEXT trip back!! See you soon Maldives!! :-)

1 of 2 fishes caught. Both on jig. One after another. By the same angler. 2nd one smaller. Both were caught in the 1st 30 minutes of jigging! :-)After the 2nd fish was landed, which was around 9am, I slept til 3pm :-)Water was VERY VERY choppy. The journey out to the fishing location was half an hour longer. And that's like 1 hour 30 minutes of roller coastal ride! By the time we reach the first location, I was already half dead. So after landing 2 fishes in a row, I thought to myself 'MISSION ACCOMPLISHED'...and down I went til 3pm. All the other 3 anglers KO one after another. 2 vomitted. The choppiness never subside so by 3pm, we were already on dry land. Golden Trevally with Duel 40g Jig
