NFL Draft Day Entertainment: Look No Further Than the Oakland Raiders
2008-04-17 07:15:00 When I learned about this contest, I was pretty sure I was going to write a column about Matt Ryan dropping into the teens while pretending to not be counting every dollar he?s losing as the hours crawl by. But I figured Ryan was the obvious selection to slip now that the Dolphins have apparently decided on Jake Long, so it probably wouldn?t be an original idea. Then I thought about writing something discussing the Detroit Lions potentially drafting another wide receiver, but I figured that one would be done a few times over by a few other people. I gave some thought to writing about how entertaining it was to have a 16-0 team picking in the top-10, making a mockery out of an NFL system that actually stripped them of their own first round draft pick. But I assumed some other Patriot fan would take a crack at that one. Then, as I was going over my notes for the Mock Draft Part Deux, it came to me. I?ve already discovered the most infuriating (and entertaining) pick of... More About: Entertainment , Oakland , Oakland Raiders
Round One to Red Sox: Yankees Lose Two of Three in Boston
2008-04-14 07:36:00 They call it the greatest rivalry in sports, though Michigan and Ohio State fans may disagree. I think we can all agree that it?s the greatest rivalry in professional sports, anyway. It started with a dominating performance by Yankee ace Chien-Ming Wang (aided significantly by the Red Sox ?s anemic bats), included a nice outing (and win) by Josh Beckett, and ended with a shaky outing by Dick-K and a horrible outing by Yankee phenom Phil Hughes. Maybe the young Yankee starters are feeling the pressure of being chosen over Johan Santana, but they certainly aren?t tearing up the major leagues this April. Especially considering it was 30-degrees (conservatively) in Boston on Sunday?not exactly great hitting weather. I jotted down some notes during and after all three games. Instead of using them to write a column, I figured I'd use them as my column. It'll give you a look inside the mind of a Red Sox fan during an early April weekend series against the evil New York Yan... More About: Yankees , Round
MLB Notebook: New Steroid Policy, Same Old Red Sox, and a Buckner Follow-Up
2008-04-12 07:17:00 MLB Enacts New Drug Policy The Mitchell Report made for some fantastic bathroom reading back when it first came out. MLB?s new drug policy, while not as entertaining, is certainly worth reading as well. The new policy starts by letting Jose Guillen and Jay Gibbons off the hook, repealing their 15-game suspensions. The only surprise here is that Jay Gibbons is still on a professional baseball team somewhere. They also decided that the players named in the Mitchell report will not be disciplined. No word on whether or not the players named in Jose Canseco?s new book will get the same protection. There is now an Independent Program Administrator, who will oversee the drug program for a minimum of three years. Not exactly the independent party that some were hoping for, but since they put the word ?Independent? in his title, it should trick the media into thinking it?s the same thing. They now have a ?Treatment Board? who will have authority to punish for recreational... More About: Red Sox , Notebook , Steroids , David Ortiz
Bygones, Shmygones: Bill Buckner Ruins Red Sox Opening Day Celebration
2008-04-09 06:53:00 I?m not a huge fan of overblown championship ring celebrations prior to a regular season game in the following season. I?d much rather the teams get it over with during the offseason. I?m sorry, I know I?m a party-pooper, but I just don?t particularly like having my sports team looking back at the previous year once the new one has already started. The 2008 Red Sox have nothing to do with the 2007 Red Sox. The 2008 season should not be impacted by the 2007 season. There?s a contingent of Red Sox fans who believed that the 2005 Red Sox should have gotten a pass because the 2004 Red Sox won a championship. That?s complete balderdash. If I?m spending $400 to bring my family to a Red Sox game (not counting parking and food, of course), then the Red Sox should win every season or face the wrath of a guy who just spent a month?s salary to sit in a cramped seat built for a guy half my size that?s facing directly towards a pole. Sweeping Success: Blue Jays Complete Weekend Sweep of Boston Red Sox
2008-04-07 04:52:00 The Toronto Blue Jays would like everyone to know that the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees aren?t the only AL East teams with playoff aspirations. In defeating the Red Sox 7-4 on Sunday, they completed an opening season sweep of the defending World Champions. Dating back to last September, the Jays have taken seven straight from the Red Sox. For some reason, they just seem to have the Red Sox? number. Well, everyone except for Roy Halladay, who even in a winning effort was touched up for four runs, three of them via the home run. Halladay, who is one of the most dominant pitchers in the American League, seems to have the same problem against the Red Sox that the Sox have against the rest of the Blue Jays? staff. But is it time to anoint the Blue Jays as a serious competitor in the AL East? I?m not so sure. The Blue Jays are relying heavily on A.J. Burnett, who is as fragile as that sexy-leg lamp from A Christmas Story. His stuff is electric, and when healthy, h... More About: Boston Red Sox , Success
Boston Celtics Complete Greatest Single-Season Turnaround in NBA History
2008-04-06 20:19:00 With Saturday?s win over the Washington Generals?err?the Charlotte Bobcats, the Celtics have had the greatest turn around in NBA history. This really is something for my generation of Celtics fans. I was too young to really appreciate Larry Bird and the original big three. For the most part, the Celtics have been a laughing stock almost my entire sports-life. While teams like Detroit and Chicago went through good-bad-good cycles, the Celtics remained consistently bad (save for a few REALLY down seasons in the Eastern Conference). It?s amazing how all of the Boston Sports teams that don?t play on ice have followed the same path. 1) Horrible ownership leads to years of inept front office decisions and horrible teams. 2) Ownership finally decides to sell the team. 3) New ownership takes over and completely turns things around. In the Patriots and Red Sox cases, the ownership change eventually lead to multiple championships. While the new Celtics? ownership haven?t br... Ian Kennedy? Who Are the Yankees Kidding?
2008-04-05 06:45:00 If you believe the reports that surfaced during the off season, Johan Santana was an Ian Kennedy away from become a New York Yankee. Ian freaking Kennedy? Are you kidding me? The same guy who was on the wrong end of a 13-4 defeat to the mighty Tampa Bay Rays? Seventy pitches and six runs in only two-and-a-third innings from the guy you just couldn?t give up to get Johan Santana. Against the Rays. How did I not spend more time on this when it happened? The Yankees are a World Series-level offensive team relying on two rookies, two senior citizens, and an ace that hasn?t won a big game (or pitched well in a big game) since joining the Yankees. The reason why Chien-Ming Wang?s nineteen win season was ?quiet? last year is because he didn?t have a single ?loud? win. No big wins. No statement games. A few big losses, especially against the Indians in the playoffs. How can a team with a $200,000,000 payroll go into the season relying on THAT guy to be their ace? The Job... An Open Letter to Matt Walsh
2008-04-04 06:32:00 Dear Mr. Walsh ,Enough is enough. It was fun for a while, but now it's just getting ridiculous. It's time to put up or shut up.Your insistence to draw out this Spygate drama as long as possible is beginning to effect my ability to enjoy the greatest sport on Earth.I just recently witnessed one of the biggest Super Bowl upsets in NFL history. Yet, I can't enjoy it because of this dark cloud you've cast over my team. Your insinuations and accusations have almost completely destroyed the NFL for me.Right now, I'm having a hard time being a fan. And it's because of you.The sad part is, I personally don't believe you have anything of substance.I mean, if you did, wouldn't you have come forward already? You claim this has been a strain on your family. If I were in that position, I would want this to go away as soon as possible. As soon as the NFL offered me legal protection, I would have hopped on the next NFL funded plane ride to the NFL Network studio with every piece of evidence I... Blitzing the NFL: A Look at the New NFL Rule Changes for 2008
2008-04-03 08:10:00 The NFL has made their annual rule changes. Per usual, the changes are both good and bad. The most publicized change is the new rule allowing a defensive player to wear one of those quarterback-style microphone helmets. I've decided to call them Belichick helmets. I agree with this in theory, but I’m not sure how it’s going to play out in on the field. For one, you have different signals for the defensive backs and the front seven. Since you’re only allowed one Belichick helmet on the field at a time, you’ll still potentially have to send in hand-signals to one group or the other. And I’m not 100-percent clear on how substitutions are going to work. I guess there will be a backup Belichick helmet. But for teams like the Patriots, who rotate their linebackers and have different guys making the calls depending on who's in the game, I’m not sure this is at all practical. I can understand why this was voted down in the past—and none of the issues ... More About: Rule , 2008

The Truth: Paul Pierce is Real NBA MVP
2008-03-21 05:00:00 The race for NBA MVP is as wide open as the Western Conference right now. From what I've been hearing, the choices seem to have been narrowed down to Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul , and LeBron James. All of them are fantastic choices. There are clear, legitimate arguments for each of them. I'm a huge NBA fan. I'm an admirer of guys who play a complete game. All of the guys who have been mentioned in the MVP race fall into that category. You have Kobe Bryant, who is an underrated one-on-one defender and an the most dominating offensive force in the NBA. The easy choice for MVP this season, he's led the surprising Lakers up to or near the top of the Western Conference (depending on what happens between now and when this is published on Thursday). Chris Paul is playing out of his mind. He makes his teammates better, can score at will, and might be playing at a higher level than anyone else in the Western Conference. 2008-03-08 06:10:00 It?s fun to call the New York Yankees the Evil Empire. It?s even more fun to call the Red Sox the new and improved Evil Empire. But we?re missing the mark entirely. The real Evil Empire is Major League Baseball itself. For years, the Cape Cod Baseball league has operated as a not-for-profit baseball league where college players can hone their skills against other major league prospects. The league is run entirely by volunteers. They survive through donations, grants, and merchandise sales. MLB itself usually contributes $100,000 per season to the league. The best part about the league is that it?s completely free to attend a game. People like me, who don?t have the money to take their entire family to a major league game, can bring the entire family and watch a Cape Cod league game completely for free. Despite Love-Fest, Favre Not Best Ever
2008-03-07 02:29:00 I'm not going to write one of those sappy love letters to Brett Favre that I keep seeing all over the Internet. The fact is, I've never really been a Brett Favre fan. I've always considered him one of the most overrated quarterbacks in the NFL. In fact, I'm convinced that the Packers are better off without him. And trust me, there is a contingent in that organization that agrees; you don't accidentally post his retirement news on your website, then quickly accept his retirement without any effort to talk him out of it if you want him back. After all, his awful game against the Giants cost his team a trip to the Super Bowl. Yes, there was extremely bad weather (understatement of the year), but the game was nothing more than a continuation of Brett Favre's disappointing showings in big games.
