NFL Musings: The Evil Patriots, Specter, Raider Competence, and More!
2008-06-07 06:50:00
The action picks up in what Senator Specter calls his ?war room? near his office in Washington, DC. The ?war room? is where Senator Specter goes to discuss current events, potential Senate business, and his planned accomplishments for the day. In the room with him are his two top advisers, Joey Porter and Donovan McNabb. Joey Porter: I just read that oil has gone up something stupid?like $15 per barrel. That means gas is going to end up something crazy, like $5 per gallon. Donovan McNabb: Unemployment is way up as well, higher than it?s been since the 1980s. I just saw the announcement on CNN. Senator Specter: I also read that inflation was way up again, Israel just threatened to bomb Iran, and the Real World house is in shambles now that they drunk kid is coming back from rehab. What the heck should we do? Which crisis do I address first? I am an important Senator, after all. Joey Porter: How about getting me my Super Bowl ring! Donovan McNabb: Yeah, Belichick is a cheat...

Celtics-Lakers, Game One: The Day Paul Pierce Became a Celtic
2008-06-07 04:08:00
Paul Pierce had a terrible first half in his first ever NBA Finals. After ending the half on the bench with an equal number of points and fouls (three), Pierce was just itching to get back out on the floor to help his team erase a five point half time deficit. For all the talk about Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, this is still Paul Pierce?s team. He?s still the captain. He?s still the go-to guy. He?s still the heart and soul of the team. He?s the most capable of taking over a game and erupting with a ridiculous outburst of points. With all due respect to everyone else on the team, he?s the only real Celtic on the team. Kevin Garnett is a great player, but he?s still in his first season in Boston. Ray Allen might have gone to U-Conn, but living in the area doesn't make you a Boston Celtic. Paul Pierce is a Celtic. He was drafted by Rick Pitino. He suffered through terrible ownership, awful coaching, extremely questionable trades, weak supporting casts, and impatient Celtic fa...

NBA Championship: Celtics-Lakers Preview?A Lot Can Happen in a Year
2008-06-05 05:29:00
I remember vividly being in a bar in New Jersey, just over a year ago. The Red Sox were playing the Yankees, I was in an argument with one of the many Yankee fans at the bar over which team had a better pitching staff, and one of the TVs on the far side of the bar had the NBA draft coverage. I tried not to get my hopes up, but the Celtics had gone through such a bad season. Paul Pierce was hurt, the team suffered through a ridiculous eighteen game losing streak, and the NBA?s stupid policy of not giving the number one pick in the draft to the regular season?s worst team had me extremely worried. I had visions of the number one pick. I had visions of the next Tim Duncan. This time, it was our year. This time, the ping-pong balls would fall the right way. If the NBA was willing to freeze an envelope to ensure the Knicks would get a chance to draft Patrick Ewing, surly they?d do something to ensure one of their marquee franchises got the first or second pick in a top-heavy draft. E...

Celtics Win Eastern Conference: Bring On The Lakers!
2008-06-02 02:02:00
Before I start, I want to thank the Papa Joe radio show (KLAV, 1230 out of Las Vegas) for having me on today to discuss the ?honorable? Senator from the great state of Comcast, Arlen Specter. It was fun, my first time on a radio show as a guest. Nerve racking, but fun. They should have a link to the show on their site tomorrow. If you get a chance to listen, let me know how I did. 8:39 PM: Rip Hamilton is playing, which is big for Detroit. We?ll see how he does. Hey, the Pistons won the tip for the first time this series. They must be serious. 8:42 PM: Ray Allen missed a three, but at least he shot the ball. First foul of the game?on Rondo. Billups missed?that?s odd. By the way, I?m halfway through my first Sam Adams Boston Ale, and Ray Allen just drained a three!! Good signs everywhere early! 8:44 PM: By the way, I still haven?t accepted Ray Allen back into the Big Three, nor have I fixed my keyboard yet. Two minutes and twenty four seconds of basketball, four calle...

Celtics-Pistons: Celtics Hold On (Barely), Take 3-2 Lead in Series
2008-06-02 02:01:00
I wasn?t going to do a "running diary"-type of deal for tonight?s game. It just kind of happened, starting with the beginning of the second quarter. I love reading, but hate writing these things. The inevitable Bill Simmons-comparisons and the even more inevitable Bill Simmons-wannabe comments are, most of the time, too annoying to deal with. But the spacebar on my keyboard is broken (at this point, I?ve ripped off the spacebar and I?m jamming my finger into a small hole and pushing a little rubber thing to make spaces), and since it would have taken me five hours to write this anyway, I?m going with it. We pick things up four minutes into the second quarter? 9:21 PM EST: I want this on the record: This is the worst officiating I?ve ever seen. Ever. 1) Missed goal-tend to end the first quarter. 2) Clear path foul that wasn?t a clear path. 3) Flagrant foul that wasn?t flagrant. 4) Terrible call on a clean P.J. Brown block. 5) Three second violation on P.J. Brown that...

Bleacher Report Exclusive: An Interview With a World Record Holder
2008-05-25 08:55:00
My wife (Amy Dube) is a pretty good candlepin bowler. In fact, she?s one of the best female candlepin bowlers in the world. For those of you not familiar with Candlepin Bowling, it?s pretty big in New England and parts of Canada. You can read more about it here. It?s very similar to ten-pin, but the ball is smaller, you throw three balls per box in every frame that you don?t mark, and the scores are much lower. It?s also harder to throw big games. For example, there?s no such thing as a three-hundred game, and two-hundred games are few and far between. On Sunday, April 27th, my wife wasn?t one of the best female candlepin bowlers in the world?she was the best. Throwing strings of 144, 138, and a monster 198, she become the women?s world record holder with a three string total of 480. Her record was officially recognized by the ICBA (International Candlepin Bowling Association) this week, so I decided to put our personal relationship aside for the following hard-hitting interview...

Celtics-Pistons: Celtics Steal Game Three In Detroit, Take 2-1 Lead in Seri
2008-05-25 06:00:00
Paul Pierce summed it up correctly. Forget about the monkey, they left that in Cleveland. The Gorilla is off the Celtics ? back. After splitting at home for the first time in the playoffs, the Celtics found themselves in the unfamiliar position of having to win a game on the road. It?d been over five weeks since the best road team in the NBA?s regular season won a game away from the fake Garden. Some believed they?d never win a game on the road. I heard many, many Celtic fans scream ?this one?s over in six? as they nearly killed themselves leaping off the bandwagon Thursday night. A team that plays defense as well as the Celtics is built to play and win road games in the playoffs. It was unbelievable that they hadn?t stolen a game, but on the other hand, as they were always quick to point out, they didn?t need to. Doc Rivers, for all the things he does that I don?t like, is pretty good at keeping his team even. You wouldn?t know by watching this Celtics team that they hadn?t won...

Celtics-Cavs: Paul Pierce Leads Celtics Past LeBron To Eastern Conference F
2008-05-19 04:31:00
Paul Pierce and I have been through a lot over the last few years. As a player, he?s suffered through one of the most inept front offices in professional sports, one of the worst coaches in professional sports (no, not Doc?I?m talking about that fraud Rick Pitino), a few of the worst seasons in Celtics history, a Boston media that loves to criticize everything he does on a basketball court, and a fan base that seemingly blames him for all of the hard times the Celtics have gone through recently. As a fan, I?ve suffered through losing season after losing season?rebuilding project after rebuilding project. But I've always contended that Paul Pierce could be great, he just needed some help. When Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen were acquired last offseason, Paul Pierce became the third wheel of the new Big Three in the minds of the NBA talking heads. Those talking heads couldn?t have been more wrong. Pierce has been the most consistent player on the best team in the Eastern Conference al...

Celtics-Cavaliers: Garnett, Celtics Can't Overcome LeBron and Officiating
2008-05-17 05:17:00
That was, by far, the worst, most embarrassing performance by an officiating crew in the history of the NBA. The only thing that comes even close is when they decided to give Dwayne Wade a few games in the NBA finals a few years ago. LeBron James had more free throw attempts than the entire Celtic team. Which would have been OK, if the Celtics weren?t taking the ball to the hoop. But they WERE. Paul Pierce couldn?t buy a call. Taking the ball to the hoop and drawing contact did nothing to help him. I understand that Glen Davis is a rookie, but he was fouled 7 times and didn?t make it to the line once. He was MUGGED under the hoop. Yet no call. Kendrick Perkins was thrown off the spot when attempting a defensive rebound, no call. Yet he was constantly called on the other end for minimal contact. I?m not rational right now. I was ready to blast the Celtics for losing on the road again, or praise them for finally getting over the road hump. But what I witnessed was not a basketb...

Senator Specter Keeps Spygate Alive
2008-05-16 06:55:00
"We (the NFL) respectfully disagree with Senator Specter 's characterization of the investigation conducted by our office. We are following up after yesterday's meeting with Matt Walsh." The NFL has to play nice, so you can see why they "respectfully" disagreed with Senator Specter. I, on the other hand, have no reason whatsoever to "respectfully" disagree. While a high-ranking United States Senator was meeting with a man about a football game, one could argue that there were other things going on that deserved his attention. I know what you're thinking. What else could possibly be happening in the real world that's more important than an NFL team stealing defensive signals? Maybe a few things... Some would argue that instead of wasting time meeting with Mr. Walsh, Senator Specter should have been meeting with the family of Cpl. Jessica A. Ellis. You see, while fighting in a war that Senator Specter supported, she was killed. Her death was announced by the military while...

Celtics-Cavaliers: Boston Celtics + Home Court - Sam Cassell = Playoff Vict
2008-05-15 05:21:00
It?s a simple formula. The Celtics + playing in Boston ? Sam Cassell equals a happy Sean Crowe. For the most part.James Posey and Ray Allen trying to throw the game late in the fourth quarter by committing two awful turnovers in their own zone nearly gave me an aneurysm. How do you make that pass, Posey? Ray Allen, at this point in his career, is a liability at times on the floor. Now that he?s apparently tired, he?s a liability more often than not. Apparently, Eddie House slept with Doc Rivers? wife and as payback he?s been benched for the playoffs. How else do you explain him not getting some of Ray Allen?s minutes? Or for that matter, all of Sam Cassell?s minutes?Paul Pierce was exactly what the doctor ordered after his teammates tried to throw the game away. While Garnett was relatively invisible and Ray Allen was busy missing shots and throwing the ball to the other team late in the fourth, Paul Pierce was driving to the basket, drawing fouls, and draining free throws. Fi...

A Patriot Fan's Thoughts on Spygate's End, Matt Walsh and The Boston Herald
2008-05-14 05:31:00
Matt Walsh, Matt Walsh, Matt Walsh? What can I say that hasn?t been said already by someone else, somewhere else, most likely in better English and maybe with a few added expletives?I?m actually not THAT mad at the mysterious Mr. Walsh.I discovered recently, through his own reported testimony and the stolen video tapes he returned to the NFL, that Matt Walsh didn?t attempt to destroy the Patriot s? Super Bowl weekend. It wasn?t him. Sure, he did his part to ruin the first half of the offseason for Patriot fans. I mean, Matt, you didn?t have a Rams? walk-through tape. You KNEW, presumably, the entire time that you didn?t have a walk-through tape. Would it have killed you to say so? But I?m not holding that against him, and neither should anyone else. I?m still bitter against former employers that did far less than fire me for illegally taping conversations.I was once fired from a D'Angelo sub shop because I refused to wash the dishes after I completed my deliveries for the day ...

Celtics - Cavaliers: Cleveland Fans Are Right, Boston Does Suck!
2008-05-13 05:49:00
Holy crap this Celtics team is frustrating. You watch them at home and you think they?re an unstoppable force that?s going to roll to the NBA finals. You watch them on the road and you wonder how they even made the playoffs in the first place.Where to start? How about some quick advice for the Eastern Conference Regular Season Champions? To Kevin Garnett: Get on the block, for the love of GOD! You can?t fade away from that long-haired, no talent all fourth quarter. You are 200 times the player he is. Stop giving in!Demand the ball, and take it to the hole. To Paul Pierce:Your defense has been fantastic, but when it becomes obvious that you?re not going to get any calls?STOP THROWING YOURSELF INTO THE DEFENDER!Look, I?ve been complaining about the officiating all post season, but it?s been consistent. Every road team has gotten an unfair shake. Every single one.Stop worrying about drawing fouls and start worrying about how to create shots for yourself in the fourth quarter.Cli...

Celtics-Cavaliers: Pierce and Allen Finally Heat Up, LeBron James Doesn't
2008-05-09 07:01:00
That?ll teach me to question the Celtics ? bench. All season long the ?experts? have pointed to the Celtics? bench, calling it their biggest weakness. It was supposed to be the thing that was going to prevent them from winning a championship (well, the other thing?but they can?t question the point guard position anymore). Once again, the Celtics? bench proved everyone (including me) wrong. They not only were better than the Cavs? bench on Thursday, but they were better than the Cavs starters. The victory for the Celtics began with the bench taking over the game towards the end of the first quarter. They brought an energy into the game that was, for whatever reason, missing at the start as the Celtics fell behind by twelve points early. The Cavs struggles, meanwhile, begin and end with LeBron James . LeBron James just cannot figure out James Posey. Posey?s long arms and extremely active and energetic defensive style has given him fits. LeBron hasn?t just been human in the first two gam...

2008-05-08 06:07:00
I?ve decided that the normal, beat-writer type game recaps are, frankly, boring. It?s not that everyone on Bleacher Report isn?t doing a fantastic job, because they are. And to tell you the truth, I?m far more likely to read a playoff game recap on Bleacher Report than anywhere else. It?s just that I, personally, suck at writing them. I bore myself, and my goal is certainly not to fall asleep while writing my own articles. If I want to fall asleep while sitting at my computer, I?ll read Peter King. That said, I still want to win this contest. I?m insanely competitive and desperately want a shiny new Rajon Rondo jersey. So I?ve decided that rather than trying to emulate a boring Boston Globe beat writer, I'm just going to write whatever the heck it is that I'm thinking after the game. I might not even wait until I sober up.Hopefully this will end up being a more enjoyable style of playoff recap. If not, please read them anyway. My Mel Kiper Jr. picture and I are broke. Game 1...

Celtics Move On: "Old" Celtics Embarrass Inexperienced Hawks in Game Seven
2008-05-04 22:15:00
That was the team that won three games and forced a winner-take-all game seven? It?s amazing how hard it is to win when the officials don?t put you on the line forty times. After going to the line forty seven times in game six, and winning the game from the charity stripe, the Hawks ran into a group of officials who weren?t willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, weren?t willing to let their own whistles decide the outcome of the game, and didn?t feel the need to keep the Hawks in the game. Not to harp on the officiating, but thirty-six points were scored at the free throw line in game six by the Hawks. They only scored eleven in game seven. This Hawks team was scrappy, but they weren?t nearly as good as Doc Rivers and the officiating crews made them look in Atlanta. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. In the deciding game seven, the Hawks were outclassed. The Celtics were the stronger, more aggressive team (it?s much easier when the officials aren?t taking away your...

How the Yankees Became the Red Sox
2008-05-04 03:26:00
The Red Sox ' championship turn over the last few seasons has caused some unforeseen side effects. The formerly loveable loser Boston Red Sox have become the new Evil Empire. Their fans, who used to be looked upon with pity, are now looked upon with annoyance as they fill every ballpark the Red Sox visit. The "pink hat" Red Sox fans are another phenomenon altogether. I'm not sure what to think of this group, but I'm pretty sure they didn't exist before 2004 (at least in large numbers). Red Sox fans, a group that I am relatively proud to have spent my entire life a part of, are completely out of control ? and deservedly so, considering everything we went through prior to 2004. But those side effects can be expected. What started happening in New York the day the Red Sox came back from 0-3 in 2004 was completely unexpected.Click here for the rest of the article...

Celtics Fail Road Test in Atlanta, Prove They're Not NBA Championship Mater
2008-05-03 06:27:00
It was the start of the fourth quarter when I finally realized what I should have known all along: This Celtics team is not going to win the NBA championship.I could complain about the officiating again, talk about the free-throw differential, and remind everyone that four of the six fouls against Paul Pierce ranged from questionable to ridiculous, but there?s a larger issue here.If it were just the officiating, I wouldn?t be stressed. I know the Celtics are going to win on Sunday. As Donny Marshall reminded us on the Celtics? TV broadcast, most of the questionable calls going against the Celtics aren?t going to go against them Sunday at home. It?s not the officiating. It?s not the Hawks . It?s not a bad match-up. It?s not the Hawks being better than we thought they were (though they are much, much better than we thought they were?especially Joe Johnson). This Celtics team has some serious, serious issues that I?m not sure they can overcome. The biggest issue, and maybe the only ...

It's Official: NBA Refs Have Money on Hawks, Celtics Win Anyway
2008-05-01 06:18:00
After five games, two upset losses, many inexcusable non-calls against the Hawks , even more inexcusable calls against the Celtics , and many, many beers, I've come to the conclusion that NBA officials must have put a significant amount of money on the Atlanta Hawks. How else do you explain it?Atlanta has taken 45 more free throws than the Celtics (155 to 110). The Celtics have been called for 21 more personal fouls than the Hawks. Even in a Celtics? victory, the officiating was so excruciatingly bad that the game was hard to watch. Do the officials want to keep the series close? Did David Stern decide that getting the fans back in Atlanta was better for the NBA than a Celtic sweep?Click here to read the rest of the article...

NFL Draft Recap: Chiefs Draft's Biggest Winners, Rams Biggest Loser
2008-04-28 07:09:00
I?m a fan of the new streamlined NFL draft. Thanks to the new time limit, I was able to watch the entire first round while still sober.Which, I have discovered, makes it much easier to report on the draft after that fact. There?s no good way to judge a draft the day after it happens. None of us know how these players are going to turn out. Sometimes the worst picks on draft day end up being the best picks on game day.But like our contemporaries over at ESPN (and in every sports section of every newspaper at every newsstand tomorrow morning), that's not going to stop me from jumping the gun and declaring the winners and losers of draft weekend. Patriots Draft Recap, Day Two: Pats Add Linebacker and Cornerback Depth
2008-04-28 03:13:00
The Patriots were able to add to next year?s draft by trading their first of three third round picks to the Chargers for a 2009 second round pick and a fifth round pick this year. I love that the Patriots are always looking to set themselves up for next year?s draft. It?s just one of the reasons why the New England Patriots are the most dominant team in the NFL right now. For a recap of day one, click here. Third Round Pick (78th overall): Shawn Crable, LB, MichiganCrable is a pass rushing outside linebacker with experience playing with his hand both on and off the ground. He?ll step right in as a situational pass rusher and a special teams contributor. He projects to an outside linebacker in the Patriots? system. He should benefit from learning behind Mike Vrabel, assuming Vrabel can get over the whole Michigan-Ohio State thing. All in all, a very good third round pick.Grade: A Third Round Pick (94th overall): Kevin O'Connell, QB, San Diego StateO?Connell was the highest rated...

Patriots Draft Recap, Day One: Mayo A Perfect Fit, Wheatley a Head Scratche
2008-04-27 07:40:00
The New England Patriots did what we all expected them to do, they shopped the number seven pick and sold it to the highest bidder. The highest bidder ended up being the New Orleans Saints, who wanted to ensure they could draft Sedrick Ellis. The trade moved the Patriots down three picks and netted them an additional third round pick (they also gave up their fifth round pick in the deal). After trading the pick, the Patriots went for a position we all expected, but a player nobody expected. First Round Pick: Jerod Mayo, LB, TennesseeI?m not sure anyone had the Patriots selecting Tennessee LB Jerod Mayo. Mayo is a very good player who can play at all three linebacker positions in the 4-3, and projects to an inside linebacker in the 3-4. He was an extremely productive player in college, and was ranked as the number two inside linebacker in the draft almost universally. Some NFL teams had him ranked higher than USC linebacker Keith Rivers, the Patriots claim they were one of them.I ...

Celtics Upset In Atlanta: Smith, Johnson Power Hawks Back Into Series
2008-04-27 06:47:00
The Celtics went down to Atlanta a confident team up 2-0 in their best of seven series against the Hawks. The Hawks limped home beaten, bruised, and counted out.Forty eight minutes later, the Hawks are right back in the series. For forty eight minutes in Atlanta, it was the Celtics that didn?t have any answers. It was the Hawks that had answers for every question the Celtics threw at them. For forty eight minutes in Atlanta, it was the Hawks draining open shots from three point land and the Celtics missing their defensive assignments. For forty eight minutes in Atlanta, the Hawks were the better team. And when the game was over, they celebrated their nine point victory as if it just won them a national championship. Unfortunately for Al Horford and company, this isn't college anymore and they still need to win three more of these. Based on their post-game celebration, I?m not sure the Hawks were aware of that...You have to give credit where credit is due, when Joe Smith gets go...

NFL Draft Preview: Dorsey To Rams, Ravens Want Ryan, Pats Want Out Of Top S
2008-04-26 09:01:00
I?m not sure if I like Todd McShay because he?s a good draft analyst or if I like him because he?s not Mel Kiper. In any event, I?m enjoying him on both Mike & Mike in the Morning and on Sports Center. ESPN?s draft day coverage can?t hold a candle to the NFL Network?s, but since Comcast is evil I?m stuck with ESPN only today.Which means an afternoon of the two most annoying, pompous talking heads in all of sports, Chris Berman and Mel Kiper, Jr. (whose autograph, interestingly enough, I?m on pace to get in the Draft Article Contest). Thanks to Team Parcells, the first pick lacks drama, as the Fins have had Jake Long signed for almost a week now?and we?ve known about it for even longer. The rest of the first round is steaming with drama. Heading into today, there?s still no consensus on who?s going number two to St. Louis. Nobody knows for sure what the Falcons are thinking. And it?s next to impossible to figure out what the Raiders are thinking.Anyway, with the draft a few ...

If you?re going to call out the opposing team?s fans, the least you could do is not get repeatedly schooled by a second year point guard. If you?re going to claim that Kendrick Perkins has no right to question your game one performance, the least you could do is not follow it up with the same type of performance in game two.Mike Bibby succeeded in doing one thing?he gave the Boston crowd something to boo. God knows the Celtics haven?t given them reason to this season.Rajon Rondo continued his impressive playoff debut, filling up the stat sheet with twelve points, six rebounds, eight assists, and four steals. Kevin Garnett took control of Wednesday night's game early and never let go, finishing with his fifteenth straight playoff double-double (nineteen points and ten rebounds). SeanMC Must Win Every Contest
2008-04-21 06:06:00
There are two contests going on at Bleacher Report right now, both of which I'm entered in. The first is a "most hits on a draft article" contest, which has a first prize of two tickets to Patriots' opening day. I'm solidly in second place right now, I need help jumping into first. So check out my attempt to knock Raider fans down a peg and win this contest by clicking here. The second contest is an NBA Beat Writer contest, where we play beat writer for an NBA team and the person who gets the most hits throughout the playoffs wins. I've written my first article for that (on the Celtics ' easy game one victory), and it's right here.I need YOUR help to ensure I win every contest on Bleacher Report. :)

Nothing Bruin: Why I Refuse to Care About the Boston Bruins
2008-04-19 07:58:00
I?ve been asked by a few of the hockey writers on Bleacher Report why I haven?t gotten into the Boston Bruins this season. I've been told that they?re a gritty, exciting team that busts their butts every time they take the ice. They?re a good group of guys who love the game of hockey. They have a great mix of young and old, and a core of players that they can build around for years to come. They?ve even managed to win a few games against the big, bad Canadiens this week. But I?m not interested. I can?t be interested. I?ve played that game too many times before, and every time I've lost painfully. I will not be suckered by the Boston Bruins again. So, without further adieu, the top-10 reasons why I will never, EVER root for or care about the Bruins again. 10) Ray Bourque finished his career with another team. I still can?t get over this one. Trading Ray Bourque was an insult to everyone who put their time and effort into supporting the Bruins throughout his car...
