More footage from Mia, 2008 American Girl Place Doll of the Year celebratio
2008-03-06 14:49:00 On Sunday, January 13, 2008, Rockefeller Rink and American Girl Place celebrated Mia, the 2008 Doll of the Year . I was lucky enough to attend and tape portions of the celebration, hosted by three-time U.S. pairs champion (1970-1972), two-time Olympian and World bronze medalist JoJo Starbuck. JoJo produced and choreographed several numbers for the show, which included performances by four young skaters: Claudia, Olive, Viktoria and Vida. Wouldn't you know it, my video camera started "acting up" as the fourth skater, 12-year-old Vida, was taking to the ice and I was unable to capture her lovely performance. Luckily, an attendee of the show contacted me recently because she had video of Vida as well as the group finale number at the end of the celebration. Thank you, Anna! I know all the Mia and skating fans will love to watch the programs... More About: American Girl

Results of 2008 World Junior Championships: Ladies
2008-03-02 07:16:00 At the 2008 World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, on Saturday, the evening belonged to 15-year-old Rachael Flatt, who placed second at this year's U.S. senior Nationals. Rachael, in third place after the short program, won the free skate and the world junior title. This was also Rachael's first Junior Worlds, and with her success here and at Nationals, I'm guessing she's done skating under the radar. She will make her international senior debut next season. Go Rachael!!! Reigning world junior champion Caroline Zhang from the U.S., second after the short, remained second, and U.S. senior ladies champion Mirai Nagasu, first after the short, placed third. Although she skated near perfect in the short program, Mirai struggled during her free skate with her two Lutz jumps and flip jump, and even lost hold of her blade at the end of the layback spin. Mirai later explained that she let her nerves take control, rather than her taking control of her nerves. Jenni... More About: Results , Ladies

Meeting your future spouse at work
2008-02-25 06:43:00 It's true what they say -- the best place to find your future mate is at work. And why not? You spend most of your time at work, hang out with people at work, get to observe them in all sorts of settings. I guess the skating world is not that different from the office environment. If your job is to skate, chances are, you'll find your future mate on the ice -- You're touring together, entering the same competitions, maybe sharing coaches and choreographers and traveling in the same circles. What could be more natural than falling for someone in that context? In honor of Valentine's Day, the February issue of SKATING magazine profiled two couples who started as partners on the ice, and became husband and wife. Ice dancers Jennifer Wester and Daniil Barantsev (see above) fell in love while training together in Hartford, Connecticut. They were married three years later on May 6, 2006. After the 2010 Olympics, the pair said that they will likely put their competitive skating aside ... More About: Future , Work , Meeting , Spouse
Clip of the week - Charlene Wong
More articles from this author:2008-02-23 07:00:00 At the 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, all eyes were on 14-year-old Mirai Nagasu after she roared into first place after the short program. Sitting beside her in the Kiss and Cry area was her primary coach, Charlene Wong , and their reactions after the high scores were announced are priceless (see below). Everyone commends Mirai for her artistic, fluid and musical style of skating (considering she's only 14!) and Charlene, who has coached Mirai since 2006, has played a major role in bringing these elements to Mirai's skating, while also balancing her youth and growing maturity. Charlene has had a dynamic skating career of her own in the 1980s and 1990s. Charlene, now 41, was a four-time silver medalist at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships (1983, 1988-1990) and also competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. After turning professional in 1990, she won her first event, the 1990 U.S. Open Professional Figure Skating Championships and also toured extensiv... More About: Clip , Week 1, 2, 3 |
