Jaguars Hunt for Defensive Coordinator Continues: Gregg WIliams to Titans?
2008-01-29 02:21:00 In yet another development, the Tennessee Titans have requested an interview with Gregg Williams. Williams was on Jeff Fishers staff from 1997 to 2000 as their linebackers coach as well as defensive coordinator. Of course, the Titans have a defensive coordinator right now in Jim Schwartz, which makes for an interesting dynamic there. Now, I've no link to back this up, BUT, I'm told that someone on the NFL Network said that Jeff Fisher got in touch with Gregg Williams at the "11th hour" and will not work for Jacksonville. As soon as I have something legit, I'll post it here, but my gut reaction is "damn. Not so much at not getting Williams, which I think would have been great, but that Tennessee would get him right from under us. Wait till Gregg sees the offense up there and realizes just how huge his job will be to keep that machine going. Clearly, more to come. -Chris More About: Coordinator , Hunt , Jaguars , Iams
On Gregg Williams
2008-01-28 17:28:00 [editor's note, by River City Rage]: With all the talk about Gregg Williams , I thought it would be useful to get some inside perspective on the man. Ben, from The Curly R was kind enough to do a little analysis on the subject. It's worth reading every word. He certainly brings an energy Greetings, I'm Ben Folsom and I write about the Redskins over at The Curly R. In 2006 Chris and I traded 5 questions before the Redskins Jaguars game at Redskins Stadium, a thrilling 36-30 overtime win for Washington, little did we Redskins fans know that game pretty much would be the highlight of the 2006 season as the Redskins went on to finish 5-11. Chris asked me what I thought about Gregg, about his football philosophy and what Jaguars fans could expect with Gregg as Jack Del Rio's defensive coordinator. Gregg has a tremendous mind for defensive football and would be an asset for the Jaguars... under the right circumstances. Disclaimer: I did not want Gregg as the n... More About: Iams
Defensive Coordinator Found: Gregg Williams to Interview in Jacksonville on
2008-01-28 07:57:00 Gregg Williams , our new defensive coordinator? Today's Washington Post is reporting that former Redskins Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams is in contact with the Jaguars and could interview on Monday. The exact quote: Williams is in discussions with Jacksonville , league sources said, and could interview today for the Jaguars' defensive coordinator position. Good. Get this deal done and get it done now. Is Gregg Williams the perfect hire? No, he's got an agenda of his own and that means this is a short term gig. However, he's good, he knows how to work a defense, and he's sure to bring an attacking scheme to Jacksonville without having to change our roster too much. That said, Jack Del Rio will have to clearly demarcate the bounds of influence on the defense, as Williams is a control freak and could create tension. Then again, Del Rio just won the battle with James Harris, so he's probably in no mood to deal with power struggles,... More About: Interview , Iams
Jaguars Defensive Coordinator Hunt: The Plot Thickens/Dave Campo to Dallas?
2008-01-28 00:28:00 The quest for the next Jaguars Defensive Coordinator just got a little more interesting. It appears that the Jaguars have given permission for Assistant Head Coach Dave Campo to interview with the Dallas Cowboys. Campo, for the record, is a former head coach of the Cowboys, which would be weird to have a fired head coach return to the team as an assistant. But whatever, internal policies of the Cowboys don't interest me. What is important, however, is what that does to our search for a defensive coordinator. Let's draw some conclusions. Ray Hamilton, Defensive Line Coach is gone to Atlanta, Ted Monachino, Assistant Defensive Line coach, will replace him. Donnie Edwards will be the Secondary Coach, unless something happens and Dave Campo stays. If Dave Campo leaves, which letting him interview with the Cowboys seems to indicate, Former Redskins Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams should be the number one choice. Rex Ryan is staying in Baltimore, removing him fr... More About: Hunt
Defensive Line Coach Ray Hamilton to Atlanta?
2008-01-25 20:50:00 Something weird happened at Jaguars.com this morning. In the daily Ask Vic someone asked Vic if he knew if any of Jacksonville's assistants would be joining Mike Smith in Atlanta . Vic replied that Defensive Line Coach Ray Hamilton was going with Smith. Shortly thereafter, that question and answer was deleted from the article, and a question on the message board about the move is also missing. Weird Stuff, so much in fact that I've got nothing to actually quote here, since all content is removed. But I'll go ahead and throw it out there, because it represents a big concern for all of us as we watch the Jaguars progress through the off-season. Mike Smith has already hired an Offensive Coordinator and Defensive Coordinator from within the Atlanta organization, but it's a bad time to have your cupboard raided, considering how many of the "best names" are already signed up with other teams. Losing Ray Hamilton is hard because our defensive line, despite the injuries, is ...
Senior Bowl: Who are the Jaguars looking at?
2008-01-25 20:11:00 Kendall Langford, our next Defensive End? Good Afternoon! As you probably know, the Senior Bowl is this weekend, lending us an early look at what the Jaguars might be thinking about as they move into the final stages of scouting the 2008 Draft Class. While it's pretty early and a lot of speculation, I'm going to run through the list of prospects and see what we can conclude. (In no particular order) Jordan Dixon, Linebacker, Colorado: Dixon is a 5'11, 221 lb, Inside linebacker. He was the Defensive Player of the Year for the Big 12, and accumulated 280 tackles in his 3 year college career. I'm told that he's a better run blocker than in coverage as he's not the quickest. He's one of those "big motor" players that makes up in intensity what he might lack in ability. Biggest upside to him is that he's a form tackler who wraps up and shuts down plays. Maybe he could teach our guys a thing our two. Of course, it...
Jaguars Defensive Coordinator: Speculative Head Hunting...
2008-01-24 22:37:00 Update [2008-1-24 17:41:22 by River City Rage]: Florida Times Union Reports that the Jaguars have hired former Detroit Lions Defensive Coordinator Donnie Henderson, NOT to serve as Defensive Coordinator, but according to Del Rio "His role will be defined later,”My take on this is that it means that Assistant Head Coach Head Campo boosts his chances for a promotion, and Henderson becomes an Asst Head Coach/Secondary. Henderson is a solid secondary coach and would we a welcome addition to our Coaching Staff. I like this hire, even though his resume is tainted by years with the Lions. I think this makes it an almost "sure thing" that Dave Campo is our next Defensive Coordinator. So, it's official, Mike Smith has inherited all that is the Atlanta Falcons. Which means we need a new Defensive Coordinator. Let's take a (very quick and under-researched) look at who's out there that we could get... "I don't think he's ready to make any kind of decision," Campo said of Nolan. "I think he feels like he's a little bit rushed and doesn't want to do that. I don't have anything to report, other than it's status quo." Campo later added, "I'm going to move on."So who knows... New York Giants advance to the Super Bowl!
2008-01-21 04:33:00 So there you have it, two weeks from now we'll see the New England Patriots face the New York Giants. What. A. Game. I said to my mother after the overtime coin flip: "Brett's going to throw an interception." Two plays later it's over. The Giants defense looked tremendously good in pressuring the offensive line and getting physical with the wide receivers. I don't need to tell you this, but I'll be a Giants Fan for the next 14 days, no offense to New England, but I'm riding the hot card. As a Jaguars fan, I'm happy to see Tom Coughlin go to the big show. He's got a hard card in dealing with the pressures of New York, and he's done a fantastic job. Funny that the Giants would get things figured out after Tiki Barber leaves and Jeremy Shockey gets placed on Injured Reserve. The only downside of a Giants win is that we'll get an overdose of annoying Mannings, led by the intolerable Archie Manning himself. That's all I've got for now. &... Big Cat Country Rebutted: A response from Patriot Land!
2008-01-19 23:42:00 You might have noticed that I got very upset recently over the unprovoked attack on some Jaguars fans outside Foxboro. You can re-read my outrage here. Well, our good friends and co-bloggers over at Pats Pulpit have stumbled across the article, and they were not pleased. Heck, researching this, I typed "Jaguars fans attacked" into Google, and two of the first four links are about Jaguars fans being attacked in Pittsburgh (two weeks ago, a fan was hospitalized) and San Diego (in 2004). That one left a Jags fan unconscious. These are just incidents involving Jaguars fans! Can you imagine how often this occurs at all 32 NFL stadiums? How about major league baseball fields, or basketball and hockey arenas, or following soccer matches? Of course, no one at SB Nation's Jacksonville Jaguars blog could be bothered to use Google, choosing instead to rage against Patriot s fans in ignorance. No mention of the Pittsburgh incident, recently or in the past. I guess it's not a big deal if a divi... More About: Country , Land , Response
A Saturday without Football: There oughta be a law...
2008-01-19 21:05:00 I'm sad inside today. No Football today. The ever present knowledge that there are only three (four with the Pro-Bowl) NFL games left this season is a big damper on this chilly Saturday . Compounding this ill feeling is the fact that despite my posturing in the picks post, I just can't get that excited about tomorrows games. There's no substance to this post, just the meandering thoughts as I scan channels for something amusing to watch. There ought to be a law saying that somewhere, somehow, there has to be football of some sort all weekend, every weekend. -Chris
Here's to the Underdogs: Championship Round Playoff PIcks!
2008-01-18 20:59:00 For the record, I suck at picking these games. If you ignore my "rooting interest" in the Jaguars, I'm still at 4 of 8, with last week completely kicking my tail. A huge thank you to my friend Roman who insisted that the Giants were the real deal. The Giants game being the only one in the divisional round that I picked correctly. Hell, I even picked the Colts, which I never do, just so I could hedge my bets against a New England Cake Walk into the Super Bowl. Even the Colts burnt me, which should come as no surprise. With that said, it's time to try again at picking these damn games. @ San Diego Chargers @ New England Patriots -- Um. Right. Phillip Rivers versus Tom Brady. And that's IF he can play with half a knee. Norv Turner versus Bill Belichick. Wow. Does it get more obvious? Clearly the Chargers are going to come into Foxboro, whack around an undefeated team, and then do their part in giving us an unhyped Super Bowl. Am I really picking the Ch... Jack Del Rio: End of Season Press Conference Transcript
2008-01-15 20:49:00 Here's the full transcript of Jack Del Rio's end of season press conference. It's long, but has some good stuff in it. Worth reading in its entirety. Jack Del Rio: "We're proud, but not satisfied. I think we're proud of the fact that for two of the last three years we've been in the postseason, proud of the fact that we won 12 games, proud of the fact that we won a playoff game on the road at Pittsburgh; but not satisfied because we intend on bringing home a world championship, and until we do that we're not going to be satisfied. Going back to that theme and that comment, I'm very proud about becoming a real team. I feel like this year, more so than any year in the five years we've been here now, we truly became a team - more consistent in our approach, leaders stepped forward. We had the captain patches for Fred Taylor, for David Garrard, for Paul Spicer - each of these young men really embodied what we're looking for in terms of being unselfish ... Indianapolis Colts fall to San Diego Chargers: Stunned.
2008-01-13 23:35:00 Wow. That's all I can say. Losing to the Patriots hurts. Watching the [Colts http:www.stamedeblue.com] fall to the Chargers doesn't really make it any better, but a Colts loss is a Colts loss. It's amazing the difference in perception between the Jaguars and the Colts. For us, advancing in the Playoffs and losing a very good game to the Patriots leaves us with a solid season, one that can be viewed with great pride as we build on it for next season. The Colts, on the other hand, have a season that ended in absolute disappointment. For them, anything less than a Championship is a failure, and losing in their first playoff game to the Chargers, with their backups no less, has to hurt. I'm stunned, frankly, that they lost. They finally get completely healthy and then this happens. Such is the NFL though. I wish we could have been the "Any Given" game, but at least we won't have another season of "World Champion Colts". 2008-01-13 17:34:00 Paul Spicer, Defensive End (On the game plan) We knew coming in you have to get them off on third down, regardless of if they are a four-down team. We had them a couple of fourth downs, but you have to make stops. That is something we did not get done today. (On holding Randy Moss to one reception) They did not get to sixteen and zero by just Randy Moss. I think Wes Welker did a great job; he has been doing it all year catching passes underneath. (On the loss) What happened today is that you cannot make mistakes against a good team. We made our share, including myself. It was nobody's fault, we take a win and loss the same way here as a team. Maurice Jones-Drew, Running back (On the Patriots ) They don't make mistakes, they execute real well. It is tough to face a team that way. When you make mistakes they just capitalize on them. Their offense is great and they just make things happen. (On the key to the game) Turnovers were the thing. We had two and they did not have any. So it i... Jacksonville Jaguars v. New England Patriots: Final Game Preview
2008-01-12 06:38:00 And here we are. Divisional round of the Playoffs. There's not much bigger than this. And our opponent, they don't get much bigger than this either. Our Jacksonville Jaguars are playing for history, not just their own, but league history. They could be the giant slayers or they could be just another impediment to the inevitable. No matter what the challenge, this much is clear: all we have to do is win. That's the beauty of the playoffs. Every team is on its own, every team is the master of their fate, and anything can happen. The multivariate realm of possibilities is mind boggling, even with the "safe bet" of divisional weekend. Nothing, even with the Patriots is certain, because it's the playoffs. As the football cliche goes, it's a game of inches, and the Jaguars must get every inch they can get. Divisional Playoff Weekend: Picks for the "other" games...
2008-01-11 21:33:00 Believe it or not, there are other games going on this weekend. Of course, I'd like to refuse their existance, but I wouldn't be a blogger if I didn't attempt to offer some sort of opinion about the rest of the NFL. Jacksonville Jaguars v. New England Patriots: THE Key Matchup!
2008-01-11 06:32:00 Brad Meester, the key to everything Center Brad Meester v. Nose Tackle Vince Wilfork There's a saying in football that the game is won or lost in the trenches. Unfortunately for me, I don't have years of experience playing on offensive or defensive lines to give me the skill set required to explain how exactly the Jaguars can "win", so we're going to explore a particularly important trench fight and maybe learn a little bit about playing on the line. The most important match up in Saturdays game is the duel between Jaguars Center Brad Meester and Patriots Nose Tackle Vince Wilfork. This is a critical battle because between these two men exists the Jaguars running game and the Patriots ability to pressure David Garrard. Between these two men, quite frankly exists each teams best shot at winning. For the Jaguars, establishing a consistent running attack begins with the initial engagement of Meester with the Patriots Wilfork. The... It's nice because it's not about asterisks, "bulletin boards" or other nonsense. I also like how the reporter asked Kyle Brady about playing with Derek Landri, who was drafted after Kyle left in Free Agency. For the record, I think that Kyle Brady is the only good part of the Patriots Story this season, he's one hell of a physical player and were he to get a ring, I'd be damn happy for him:"Spicer and [Reggie] Hayward are bigger and more physical guys, but [Bobby] McCray is a quicker guy [at defensive end]," Brady said.
