Cuffs007 relays ESPN's camp review...
2008-06-08 08:01:00 (Editorial Note: Cuffs007 compiled this from a Mini-camp review by ESPN. Thanks Cuffs! -Collin) ESPN's take on Jaguars camp by cuffs007 on Jun 6, 2008 7:15 PM PDT Training camp report from ESPN... Posted by ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas are Some observations from the first workout of Jacksonville's minicamp: We'll have to wait and see how this truly plays out, but the trade for wide receiver Troy Williamson from Minnesota might turn out to be a steal. All the Jaguars had to give up was a sixth-round pick for a guy who had first-round talent when he came into the league. Williamson flashed that talent today, making several nice catches. He also talked after practice and it sounds like he's out to prove Vikings coach Brad Childress wrong. If Williamson and Jerry Porter can play up to their potential, the Jaguars suddenly could have a strong receiving corps, although Matt Jones, a first-round pick in 2005, still hasn't shown much and could be playing for a roster spot... Jaguars Minicamp 2008: Mystery Players Revealed!
2008-06-07 08:28:00 One of the surprises of Friday's minicamp was the presence of four players who were not identified on the Jaguars roster. These four "mystery players" were an enigma, as the wire services did not show any recent signings. It turns out that these four players were tryouts for the roster, not signed to any sort of contracts. It's a hodgepodge group of guys, some with NFL experience, others just trying to extend the dream just a little while longer. Jack Del Rio had this to say about the tryouts: "I know that there are a lot talented players out there who for whatever reason don't fit, don't catch on, don't work out," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said. "We're more concerned with giving him an opportunity, giving him a chance to come in here and compete in this environment. This is a tryout weekend for him. If we feel there is enough there, where we want to continue, we'll offer him a contract and bring him to camp." Considering that their careers with Jac... More About: Players , Mystery , 2008

Camping with FBT: 2008 mini camp AM practice session
2008-06-06 20:56:00 [Note by River City Rage, 06/06/08 3:02 PM EDT ]: FBT writes the very best reports on the minicamp and training camp practices. He was kind enough to post his thoughts on today's practice here. You can read more from FBT at Jaguars Journal ! It was good to see the team back on the field this morning, sporting their finest shorts and shirts. Noticeably absent from participation (but still on the field with the team) were Mike Walker (worked with the training staff for most of practice with his knee wrapped. According to the team, he’ll participate in 1 practice daily), Brian Smith (still walking with an obvious limp), and George Wrighster (knee was wrapped up tightly). There were a couple of uh-oh moments during the practice session with players that you do not want to see coming up lame. Jerry Porter participated early in practice, but during one of the catching drills, after making a nice grab on a slant pattern in front of the defender, he clea... Sensabaugh Arrested for Lack of Sense...
2008-06-06 02:35:00 Jacksonville Safety G. Sensabaugh was arrested May 30th 2008 for reckless driving. He was caught doing wheelies on a motorcycle (he must know Kellen Winslow) and was promptly booked into the local jail. How the Jags managed to keep this quiet for over a week is beyond me. The arrest occured prior to Roger Goodell (commish) making a rule which allows teams to be fined for player misbehavior, so the Jags won't be ponying up any cash. Still, this has to play into any decision the team makes about Sensabaugh. He has now been arrested twice, once for possession of a firearm, and now this. Fool me once, shame on you... But, Fool me twice... shame on me. I doubt the Jags will tolerate this behavior, not only the arrest, but the complete neglect of his body he showed through his reckless behavior. Teams make investments in players and want to know that they'll take care of themselves and not engander their body. Sensabaugh will really have to "show-up" or he's not on... Jacksonville Jaguars Tornado Relief Contest: How you can help!
2008-06-05 22:22:00 Two weeks ago the Iowa town of Parkersburg was reduced to rubble by a F5 tornado. The community of only 2,000 produced four current NFL players, including Jaguars center Brad Meester. Meester's family lost two homes, four cars, and countless irreplaceable memories, though thankfully nobody in his family was hurt. Brad and the other NFL players; Jared DeVries of Detroit, Casey Wiegmann of Denver and Green Bay's Aaron Kampman played for Aplington-Parker High School, which was completely destroyed in the tornado. The Jaguars and Brad Meester have created a fantastic fund-raiser to help rebuild the community and give the fans a way to participate. This weekend, both on Jaguars.com and at the Minicamp, fans can purchase an Aplington-Parker High School hat for $19.95 Proceeds will go to the Parkersburg Relief Fund. The hat can be ordered online here and will also be sold at Minicamp this weekend. To help with this cause, Big Cat Country has a spec... Help Jaxson De Ville beat the Tennesee Titans
2008-06-05 08:21:00 Jaxson De Ville is going head to head with the dreaded Tennessee Titans "mascot" T-Rac. I don't know who in their right mind thinks that a racoon makes for a good mascot, but I don't want to pass judgement on the fine folks of Tennessee. They just don't know better about mascots. T-rac might have ruined Adrian McPherson's knee with a golf cart, but Jaxson is the personal nemisis of Colts GM Bill Polian. They re-wrote the Mascot Rule Book because of Jaxon. So, in order to defend his honor, I demand that everyone who reads this go to the CBS Sportsline vote page and help keep Jaxson on top of the voting. We cannot let the tyranny of poorly-chosen mascots ruin our day! -Chris More About: Beat
OTA Review: Mike Walker
2008-06-05 04:13:00 Mike Walker has only been at a few OTA's, but his presence is already being felt throughout the organization. He's making circus catches and doing so with ease. He's fast; make that blazing fast. However, he's got a bit of a long stride, but not as bad as the stride Matt Jones employs, so his raw speed (no pads)translates better on the field than does Jones'. I used to attend UCF and followed their program with Coach O'Leary at the helm. This kid can catch and was undaunted by having to deal with a below average QB and constant double coverage during his tenure. He was a first round talent who slipped to the third because every team knew he had one year of IR ahead of him before he would even have the opportunity to succeed. It takes guts to make a move on a guy when you know he needs a full year of recovery under his belt. This only further underscores how lucky we are to have the front office and coaching staff we do. Shack and Gene are great and deserve some real... More About: Review , Mike
Training Camp Battles: Troy Williamson versus John Broussard
2008-06-04 12:00:00 VERSUS Introduction: With minicamp this weekend, Collin and I thought it would be interesting to look at some of the direct competition to watch for as you observe the practices. Our first matchup comes at the hyper-competitive Wide Receiver position, where two speedsters go head to head for the same roster spot. When you look at position battles, it's not just a matter of numbers, but rather an examination of role. Sometimes a battle develops due to the similar roles two players fill are very similar. For example, Defensive Tackles Derek Landri and Theo Horrocks play the same position, but would not be considered battling over the same role because the former is a faster pass-rushing DT, where the other is a more traditional run-stuffer. In this case, the Jaguars have a pair of wide receivers both destined to fill the role of speedy deep threat that's designed to stretch defenses and draw coverage. Their value is measured in ... Better Know the Jacksonville Jaguars: Defensive Tackle Theo Horrocks
2008-06-03 10:10:00 [Note by River City Rage, 06/03/08 1:04 AM PDT ] Clodknocker was kind enough to do an interview with one of my favorite Defensive Tackle Prospects in Theo Horrocks. Theo, in my opinion, is playing for a spot on the practice squad, unless there is a major shakeup on the defensive line. There are only 53 roster spots, and to add guys like Horrocks could mean a serious deficiency elsewhere. Regardless, he's a serious prospect and someone the Jaguars should develop! -C Better Know a Player: Theo Horrocks! Theo attended Lincoln High in Fayetteville, Tennessee, a small town south of Nashville. Both he and fellow defensive tackle, Lamar Divens, were signed by Vanderbilt. Lamar later transferred to Tenn. State and is now an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers. As a true freshman, Theo played in nine games while starting in two. Jaguars Cut Speedster...
2008-06-03 00:52:00 In an under whelming off-season move the Jags broke ties with a speed-demon they signed not long ago. Derrick Richards was a former track star and it was hoped he would compete on special teams, however, the recent signing of Thorpe meant room had to be made on the roster This proves once again that speed isn't everything in the NFL. Richards ran a 4.36 40-yard dash and it was thought he might be able to translate that athleticism into a punt pr kick-returning gig in the NFL. The Jags didn't think he'd pan out so they cut him. The life of a fledgling NFL player struggling to make it to the big leagues is one of tumult and constant upheavals. They aren't given much of a look from NFL teams and if they don't show something spectacular when they get the chance, they are cut. Keep in mind the only time they saw Richards was at the OTA's we've had. Let's see someone try to tell Derrick that OTA's don't matter because they are workouts in shorts. You have to give it up... Jacksonville Jaguars Minicamp: What to to watch, Who to watch, and more!
2008-06-02 08:23:00 Minicamp is this weekend, and with it comes the high-water mark of the dead zone. After minicamp closes on Saturday, it's just three OTA's till the meetings end, the coaches take some time off, and all eyes fall toward the end of July. Minicamp is more intense than OTA's, but still not the real contact of training camp. Avoiding injury is the number one concern, obviously, but for the Jaguars representing the more crowded spots of the roster it's also their first shot at establishing momentum toward securing the roster spot. Life on the margins is hard in the NFL, and with the hard cap of eighty players, there is very little room for error in securing reps that mean anything. The playbook develops a little bit more as will some of the defensive scheming, but it's still largely a passing camp, and the focus will be on the skill position players to a large extent. I'm of the belief that it's better to study the running game on film rather tha... More About: Watch , Jacksonville Jaguars , Jacksonville
Jaguars Sign Wide Reciever
2008-05-31 20:51:00 Craphonso Thorpe was signed by the Jaguars to compete for a roster spot. He'll most likely have to make his mark returning punts or kicks, because it looks like the Jaguars aren't gonna let MJD carry that load any longer. Thorpe is 6'1 187lbs and was active 5 games last season for the Colts. He played his college days at FSU and was drafted in 2005 by the KC Chiefs. He's got some catching up to do since he's missed some OTA's. Like I said though, if he makes the Jags it's going to be on special teams. He only averaged 5 yards per punt return last year and 21 on kick returns. We'll see if Joe Decamilis can coach him up some. More About: Wide , Sign , Reciever

Profootball Weekly's Jags' update
2008-05-31 18:16:00 Jaguars' coaches turning up the intensity dial May 30, 2008 Thus far, the pairing of Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio and new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is a harmonious one. Although he would never admit as much, we hear that Del Rio initially harbored some concern that appointing a fellow “Type A” personality — especially one who’s served as a head coach in the league — to replace the easygoing Mike Smith might cause some friction. With outspoken DB coach Donnie Henderson also in the coaching mix, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the intensity on the practice field is greater than it had been since Del Rio took control of the team. The energy provided by the coaches isn’t being exhibited merely as the natural byproduct of their personalities, however. With so many newcomers expected to play prominent roles on the defense, the coaches have put it upon themselves to ensure that practice sessions don’t erode in... More About: Update
Better Know a Jaguars Coach: Secondary Coach Donnie Henderson
2008-05-29 12:00:00 To say that Donnie Henderson is a “shouting” coach is more than just a mild understatement, it does a disservice to a coach who is highly competitive and demands excellence in all aspects of defense. Rumor: Spicer will attend OTA's today (5/29)
2008-05-29 07:44:00 A regular reader of Big Cat Country (Jaggernaut) reports Sam Kavouris said it on the news this evening. Honestly, I live in Tampa and don't remember this guy from my years in Jacksonville so I'm unaware of his precise role in the newsroom. If anyone has confirmation or information on Mr. Kavouris please comment below. This would mark Spicer's first appearence at OTA's this year. He supposedly worked in the off-season to focus on improving his speed and pass rushing ability. It was widely uttered that he wasn't satisfied with the Jaguars contract extension offer, and if he is now attending OTA's then one side caved to get the deal done. Something tells me it wasn't Spicer in a rush to get a deal done and get back to "voulntary activities". The Jags probably upped the ante and promptly instructed him to step up and start setting a good example for the new talent. A contract dispute could cost us more in the long run...Developing... Stroud Still Not 100%... i.e. Jags Front-Office Scored Big!
2008-05-28 23:10:00 Ok, let me start by saying that I loved Marcus; he was a beast and gave us his best years. However, this is a young man's game and Stroud is on the wrong side of thirty and had to have micro fracture surgery two years ago (for a detailed explanation of micro fracture surgery click here). The article is basically a fluff piece by the Buffalo Daily News , but, as you well know, we read between the lines here at BCC so you get the real story. In response to a question, Stroud must've forgotten that his new fan base thinks his ankle is healed... It's apparently not. “It’s not a question for me,” he said. “I feel pretty good. The ankle is not quite 100 percent but it’s darn close. I feel pretty good moving around. I’m running to the ball. I’m excited. I’m optimistic.” Wow... I think I just had Deja Vu. In fact, I googled that exact quote and look what came up... Defensive tackle Marcus Stroud revealed that his off-season ankle... More About: Office , Front
OTA Update: Jerry Porter Injured
2008-05-27 21:21:00 Jacksonville Jaguars Wide Receiver Jerry Porter was injured today while running drills during their offseason training today. Jerry, according to 1010XL, a Jacksonville Radio Station, went down after favoring one knee, and "slammed his helmet on the ground". Jaguars training staff stretched him out on the field and he did leave the field under his own power. Porter recently missed a few repetitions during a previous OTA with what seemed to be a strained achilles. This is his second injury in as many weeks. Pete Prisco, who was present at the OTA, said that the injury did not appear to be serious, but the Jaguars should consider dialing down his participation to prevent a very expensive injury Panic should be shelved, Jerry Porter is not the one shot answer to a Jaguars Super Bowl run. He is one piece of a very strong offense that is on the rise. There is no need to run to panic or worry that the team made a big mistake. Injuries, especially ... More About: Update , Injured
BREAKING: Jacksonville Jaguars team to beat in AFC South
2008-05-27 18:01:00 Contrary to other reports , the Jacksonville Jaguars have used the 2008 offseason to announce to the division that they are the team to beat in the AFC South . While the Indianapolis Colts deserve the respect due to a six-time division winner, there is no reason to assume that the reigning champs have done enough to hold their position at the top of the South. Yes, this article intended as a bit of Counter Battery fire toward my good friend and Indianapolis Colts writer over at Stampede Blue. Big Blue Shoe, as he calls himself, delights in mocking our Jaguars whenever possible, in what can only be a defense mechanism to the pain and suffering that Jacksonville is going to give their team in 2008. And we can forgive him, it's merely one step in the Kubler-Ross "Stages of Grief ": In this case, our fellow Colts fans are deeply in denial of the changes and progress made by the Jaguars during this offseason. Denial manifests itself in peculiar ways in a fanbase,&... More About: Team , Beat , Breaking
State of the D-Line
2008-05-27 00:07:00 Loss of Stroud blessing in disguise for Jaguars Could Jacksonville's DT rotation actually be even better in '08 after shipping Marcus Stroud to Buffalo? Although it's rarely a boon for a team to lose such a top-shelf talent, word out of Jacksonville is that Stroud was deemed expendable in no small part because of Rob Meier's solid play, for which Meier was handsomely rewarded last week in the form of a four-year, $15 million extension. Additionally, the team expects second-year pro Derek Landri to make a substantial impact as an attacking, penetrating tackle after showing glimpses of things to come down the stretch of his rookie campaign. With rookie DEs Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves expected to play substantial roles in Year One, the Jags genuinely believe that Meier's consistency will prove more valuable than the sometimes inspiring, sometimes questionable play that Stroud exhibited. The media is starting to realize the Jags are stout at D-line and should be feared becau... More About: State , Line

Hayward is now 2nd string...
2008-05-23 20:05:00 I have to run to the airport, but I wanted to post some info I just found over at PFT. HAYWARD DEMOTED FOR MISSING VOLUNTARY WORKOUTS Posted by Mike Florio on May 23, 2008, 12:31 p.m. Jaguars defensive end Reggie Hayward missed two days of voluntary “Organized Teams Activities” this week. When he returned, he was placed with the second team. “I’m not upset about it,” he said of the demotion. “I’ll work my way back.” Well, that's interesting. I wonder if it wasn't becasue of great play by Harvey and Groves as much as it was missing the OTA's. Hayward or Spicer may be on the outs in J-ville (complete speculation), IF one of our draft picks really steps up. That being said, their is no cap-reasoning to cut a player like Spicer or Hayward... Broussard : Size Does Matter
More articles from this author:2008-05-23 17:37:00 Let me start by saying I like Broussard, his speed is real (unlike Matt Jones'), he can catch, and he's competitive. The Jags had to keep him on the roster last year because his quickness wouldn't have been overlooked and he'd have been picked up off waivers. However, that most likely won't be the case this year. He showed his lack of size was an issue last season by going out and getting injured late in the year and finishing on IR. According to the Jags' coaches, he was easily rerouted on press coverage and hasn't learned enough techniques to make up for his lack of size in the NFL. John Broussard can't block... Period... He has been able to mitigate this problem's affect on his play time with his deep speed. His speed has forced one more defensive player to stay out of the "box" and account for him deep. In a run-first team, if you can't do something to help the run game, you're toast, and luckily for him, his speed made up for his inabili... More About: Matter , Size 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
