Detroits quest for the cup
2009-05-19 07:48:00
Detroit has made it to the Western Conference Final for the second time in as many seasons. They cruised past Columbus in four games and managed to slip by Anaheim in seven. Detroit’s success thus far has come from some unlikely sources.  Johan Franzen, who played well in the playoffs last season and had his breakthrough ...

Another Big Man Disappears
2009-05-07 00:45:00
Joe Thornton’s reputation of less than stellar playoff play has been well documented and, at least in the minds of San Jose fans, well deserved. Another regular season superstar could fall into the same category, if things do not turn around soon. With Ovechkin and Crosby essentially cancelling each other out on the scoreboard, Malkin ...

NJ Devils (First Round) Recap?.
2009-04-29 07:45:00
This did not quite come out of nowhere. You get that impression from Brent Sutter but I refuse to believe it. The bottom line is the New Jersey Devils came up short pretty much since Game 1. Even when they won…you were left with the feeling that it could fall apart. Tonight it did. ...

New Jersey Devils First Round Preview?
2009-04-13 20:31:00
Time to get this started…well how did we get here? New Jersey Devils (51-27-4) — 3rd seed.. won Atlantic! If someone had told me, the Devils would have been without Martin Brodeur for most of the season and yet win the Atlantic….I would have said you were cuckoo! Even during our preview show in August, I ...

Carolina Hurricanes?post trade deadline
2009-03-08 20:33:00
As usual, I’m a day (or more) late and a dollar (or more) short.  I was supposed to write a pre-trade deadline post about what the Hurricanes could possibly do on Trade Deadline day.  Part of the reason I didn’t write it is because who the heck ever knows what Jim Rutherford is going to ...

The NJ Devils Trade Deadline Review
2009-03-06 03:13:00
This will be easy….no really…..as easy as pie! The New Jersey Devils really went into the deadline in a very weird position. As a matter of fact, their best deadline acquisition was Martin Brodeur. But I did want to show that basically in all these deals on Wednesday…the Devils were not in ...

Penguins Still Leaving Room For One
2009-03-04 15:52:00
The Pittsburgh Penguins have put Miroslav Satan on waivers.  This move leads me to believe that they are making room and clearing space to make a deadline move today.  It wouls seem that the player that will gain the most interest from other teams is young center Jordan Staal.  The Pens have signed Staal to ...

New Jersey Devils At The Deadline
2009-03-02 00:43:00
New Jersey Devils (39-19-3) — 1st, Atlantic…3rd Conf. What got them there? Well honestly a resilient offense and timely goaltending from someone not named Martin Brodeur for most of the season is what got the Devils to this point. When Brodeur went down on November 1st…did anyone expect them to be in this position? No! Scott ...

Nik Antropov: Kazahk King Worthy Of a King’s Ransom?
2009-03-01 04:35:00
Many supporters of Leafs Nation have been truly skeptical of the career of Nik Antropov. It started when the Leafs took him in the first round, 10th overall, when many believed he would be an early second-rounder. But he had a very dominant season in the second tier of the then, RSL, and so the Leafs went out of their way to make him a part of their future. He went from being No. 11 to No. 80, but the injuries would never escape him. Today, he is considered by many as our only legitimate Top Six forward, although the recent play of Jason Blake, would have him too, being considered in that class.  With the recent remarks by Brian Burke, stating that Big Nik should basically not expect a contract renewal, where does Antropov go next? It is almost an absolute guarantee that he will be donning the colours of a different team come the end of March 4—but for who, where, and what will HE do there? Obviously, we fans are most concerned by the first two—who are we getting in return, an...

Quick Rumour Updates: Guerin To Caps Done Deal?
2009-03-01 04:30:00
The Following are some rumours I have been hearing….. Guerin to the Capitals is a done deal in my books… expect an announcement tomorrow.  Leafs News: Mayers to Detroit… - I think Burke would love to get his 3rd RD Pick back for him Carolina interested in Kaberle - This is becoming more and more interesting as it appears Kaberle would love to play alongside his brother. Carolina might have to give Frantisek a spot on the top 6 for Kaberle to agree to go there.  Ducks interested in Stajan - The Ducks have some major interest in Matt Stajan, and I believe are willing to give up a decent pick and prospect, if it means the Leafs eat some of their cap issues. Probably in the form of Todd Marchant.  Oilers interested in Blake - Not much to this, they need a scoring winger, not sure if Blake could be that, but we will see. Schremp, Nilsson available, in general. Blue Jackets still want Antropov - They would love him to play centre with Nash, or the RW, if they ca...

Making Moves: Pens Deal Ryan Whitney
2009-02-27 13:20:00
Today the Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Winger Chris Kunitz and a 20 year old prospect Eric Tangradi from the Anaheim Ducks.  The move was largely to get a winger to play with Sidney Crosby for the Penguins Playoff Push.  The deal moves defense man Ryan Whitney to the Ducks. Kunitz has been tagged a “top six forward” by Penguins GM Ray Shero and he seems pretty pleased about the deal.  He did not specifically say that the deal was  to get someone to team up with Sid. The deal net the Pens a solid Winger and Tangradi, a Philadelphia native, who is a highly touted prospect who has 87 points (38 goals, 49 assists) in 52 games with the Ontario Hockey League’s Belleville Bulls this season. Anaheim drafted him 42nd overall in 2007. The Penguins have a great deal of depth currently at the blue line with the return of Sergi Gonchar.  Whitney has not played up to expectations this year.  With the emergence of Kris Letang and withand Alex Goligoski and his development ...

Pens: Flat Start to Playoff Push
2009-02-26 18:22:00
The Pittsburgh Penguins needed a victory Wednesday to  stay in the hunt for postseason play. This game was especially important with the upcoming five-game road trip. The Penguins needed to get a big win at home against a struggling New York Islanders team, that had just beaten them last Thursday, and they did without Sidney Crosby and Ryan Whitney. The game was scattered with missed opportunities for both teams.  The Pens played well and looked sharp, but for the longest time could not find the net to save their lives.  The Netminders were very impressive, Yann Danis stopped 27 shots for the Islanders and Marc-Andre Fleury had 21 saves in his shutout performance.  It was Petr Sykora who snapped the scoreless tie with 2:28 remaining in the third period, lifting the Penguins to the 1-0 triumph over the Islanders. The goal may have been Pittsburgh’s biggest score of the season because it keeps them right in the hunt. A loss or overtime loss to the Islanders would...

Tom Renney out, John Tortorella in
2009-02-26 05:11:00
And so the ongoing rumour came true, The Rangers changed their coach. Tortorella is a fiery coach, maybe that’s what the Rangers need, it’s true most of them are underperforming, but we can’t get too picky on a team that has lacked quality finishers all year long. On the other hand Renney, is NOT  a bad coach, but his style, in my humble opinion, isn’t what the Rangers need right now. I really wonder if Tortorella is in time to change the course the Rangers are taking this season, I’m not saying he can’t, because in my mind he is the best US born coach right now. As for Renney, I wish him good luck, he has the mind to coach in the NHL again, but with free agent coach Pat Quinn wanting an NHL job he may have to wait. Would you like to write for RumorMeThis? Detroit’s Goaltender issue
2009-02-18 02:40:00
As powerful as the Red Wings may seem, 2nd place in the West, they have one big issue, GOALTENDING. Neither Conklin nor Ozzie have been good enough this season, and let’s face it the Wings won’t repeat the great cup run with a .890 save percentage. My personal solution, DO NOT TRADE FOR ANYONE, DO NOT CALL OUT OZZIE OR CONKLIN, simply CALL UP HOWARD Jimmy Howard has been a Red Wing prospect for the last 3 seasons, although he’s never played more than 4 games in a season, he’s a decent prospect, I believe the Red Wings as a team have nothing to lose, the defence is clicking, the offense has chemistry, besides Howard must gain experience if the management wants him to become the next Chris Osgood. Schneider Traded To Montreal
2009-02-16 23:10:00
The Montreal Canadiens traded for Mathieu Schneider today. What impact will he have if any with the Habs? TSN is reporting that the trade consists of Schneider and a conditional draft pick to Montreal, to the Atalanta Thrashers goes a 2nd round pick this year and a 3rd round pick in 2010. This trade is a mystery. Yes it will help the power-play as Shneider does have a cannon from the blue-line, and he may provide some comfort on the back end, but, Schneider is an unrestricted free agent also at the end of the year. This trade is a little baffling as forward Alex Tanguay is slated to come back next week, which will mean cap trouble for the Habs. Is there something else in the works? Time will tell. For now at least the Habs only gave draft picks for Schneider, which means that technically he makes the team better as there isn’t a comparision to be made with the player that left for him. Schneider will help on the power-play and will help a little on the back end, but how much ...
The play of Steve Mason
2009-02-15 00:59:00
After being drafted in the third round, 69th overall of the 2006 NHL entry draft, people were questioning whether Mason has the talent and skill to be a starter in the NHL. In order to start for an NHL franchise, a goalie was must have quick reflexes, know each team’s strenghs and weaknesses with the puck and be able to shutout a team offensively. Steve Mason has proved that he is capable of doing all of this plus a lot more. Not only has he shown that he is quite capable of being a starting goalie in the NHL, he has shown that is capable of being a “shutout man.” When fans think of the performance put on by Steve Mason to this point in the season some past goalkeepers come to mind such as Dominic Hasek, Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, Terry Shawchuk, and the list goes on. In terms of statistics, before being put on the injured reserve, he had a record of 20-12-2, with a .924 save percentage, 2.09 GAA and 7 shutouts. What more do you want from a rookie goalie? after a...

Nik Antropov, Will He Stay or Go?
2009-02-14 22:39:00
With the trade deadline less then one month away (March 4), there are trading rumors swirling around the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and Nik Antropov. Antropov is a streaky player who can have a breakout game and then play the worst game of his career the next, he is an unpredictable player! With this being said despite the trade rumors surrounding him, I don’t think Antropov will be moving anywhere until the offseason. I think that the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and Brian Burke think too highly of the Kazakhstan-born right winger and therefore will be expecting too much in return. Unless something spectacular occurs between now and the March 4 trade deadline or some team has faith in his skills and makes Burke an offer that he just can not refuse, every trade offer will not be what Burke expects and Nik Antropov will still be a Leaf. The numbers that Antropov has put up so far this year have been a lot better when compared to his statistics from last year but tha...
