Injury And Illness Struck Man United Take On Man City Tonight
2010-11-10 08:00:00 This evening there is a very important derby match between Manchester City and Manchester United at the City of Manchester Stadium. City have lost four out of five of their last games in all competitions, United have won five out of their last five. Form won?t matter; games between the two teams are unpredictable and nerve-racking. Sir Alex Ferguson celebrated his 24th anniversary as Manchester United manager at the weekend. Manchester City have had 14 permanent managers at Man City since Sir Alex was appointed on the 6th November 1986. None of them have been as successful with the City failing to win a trophy in 34 years. The clubs played each other four times last season, twice in the league and twice in the League Cup semi-finals. In three of those games Man United scored three very late goals, which insured United took all six points in the league and a late Wayne Rooney goal made sure that United would be in the Carling Cup final, which United went on to win. Hargreaves Return A Disaster, But It?s Not Over Yet
2010-11-07 16:59:00 Owen Hargreaves was a surprise inclusion in yesterday?s starting line-up against Wolves. The midfielder hadn?t started a first team game for over two years after a long battle with tendonitis in both knees. Hargreaves? last first team appearance had been at the end of last season had been as an 89th minute substitute against Sunderland in early May. Hargreaves was one of England?s best players during the 2006 World Cup; at that point he was still playing for German side Bayern Munich. In the 2006?07 season, Hargreaves broke his leg, which kept him out of most of the season. Hargreaves played five games for Bayern, all in the Champions League; he also made five appearances for England. Hargreaves was consistently being linked with a move to Manchester United for almost a year, it was finally announced that he would join and he did on the 1st July 2007. He made 34 appearances for United in his first season, scoring two goals. His second season with the club was hampered by injurie... More About: Disaster , Return , Owen Hargreaves
Late Strike From Park Saves United
2010-11-06 19:35:00 Tonight Sir Alex Ferguson will be celebrating his 24 years as Manchester United manager after United picked up all three points after beating Wolves 2-1 at Old Trafford. Both Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov were missing after they both picked up the same virus that has kept Anderson, Darron Gibson, Federico Macheda and Jonny Evans out. United were also without Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Michael Owen, Luis Nani and Antonio Valencia. The surprising name on the team sheet was Owen Hargreaves, who started his first match for over two years. The joy of his return didn?t last long with the midfielder picking up a hamstring injury within the first five minutes. Hargreaves? departure saw the introduction of Bebe. His main contribution to the game were quite a few poor crosses, which saw him being substituted later on. The away side had the better chances of the first half with a shot from Nenad Milijas deflected just wide of the post. Minutes later Stephen Hunt marginally faile... More About: Park , Premier league

Man United On The Brink Of Qualification
2010-11-03 07:37:00 Manchester United only need one more point to qualify for the next round of the UEFA Champions League , after beating Bursapor 3-0 last night. With two games remaining (away to Rangers and at home to Valencia) one point is needed to progress to the final 16. The main talking point of a fairly dull first half was the injury to Luis Nani. The winger picked up a slight groin injury, but it?s not to believed to be serious. It was Dimitar Berbatov who had the first few opportunities for United, unfortunately for the Bulgarian he was unable to get the ball past Bursaspor keeper Dimitar Ivankov. Paul Scholes had the ball past Ivankov not long before half time, the goal was ruled out after Scholes was penalised for handball. Darren Fletcher gave United the lead only minutes into the second half. After a brilliant pass from Michael Carrick, Fletcher?s strike went into the bottom left corner of the goal. After going 1-0 down Bursaspor went looking for an equaliser, both Ivan Ergic and...
Bursaspor v Manchester United Preview
2010-11-02 07:16:00 Manchester United have travelled to Turkey to play Turkish Champions Bursaspor in the Champions League tonight. Bursaspor have lost every match of the group stage so far, the last being a 1-0 loss to Man United at Old Trafford. Man United are yet to lose a game this season, in all competitions. A win tomorrow will take them to 10 points, which would leave them onto the verge of qualification. Bursaspor may have struggled in Europe this season but in the league, it is a different story. They currently sit at the top of the league after a 1-1 draw with Fenerbahce at the Bursa Ataturk Stadium on Friday. Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia are all missing due to injury. Darron Gibson, Anderson, Federico Macheda and Darron Gibson all didn?t travel due to injury, nor did Rio Ferdinand, who is being rested. The 20-man Man United squad is: Van der Sar, Amos, Kuszczak; Evra, Brown, Vidic, Smalling, Rafael, Fabio, O'Shea; Eikrem, Scholes, Obertan, Bebe, Fletcher,... Controversial Goal Finishes Off Spurs
2010-10-30 22:50:00 With both Chelsea and Arsenal scoring late winners and picking up all three points in their respective matches, it was vital that Man United did the same when they played Spurs in the late kick-off. United took the lead through the captain Nemanja Vidic in the 31st minute but the game will be remembered for the second, which came just six minutes before fulltime. Sir Alex Ferguson made three changes to the side that beat Stoke last weekend with Rafael Da Silva, Ji-Sung Park and Michael Carrick all coming into the side, replacing John O?Shea, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes. Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp hinted that Gareth Bale may be on the bench with their Champions League match against Inter Milan midweek in mind. Bale started along with Robbie Keane and Jermaine Jenas, who came in for Peter Crouch and Wilson Palacios. Other than that, it was the same team that drew with Everton the previous weekend. The game got off to a bright start with both teams hitting the post early on... More About: Controversial , Goal , Premier league

2010-10-30 07:45:00 Tottenham Hotspur have failed to win any of their last 25 meetings against Man United , in all competitions. In today?s late kick-off they will be hoping that their luck is about to change. Michael Owen is also out of the game at Old Trafford tomorrow, with a hamstring injury, which will keep him out for four to five weeks. Antonio Valencia, Ryan Giggs and Owen Hargreaves are also suffering from injuries; Jonny Evans is rated as doubtful. Another Setback For Owen
2010-10-27 14:17:00 Manchester United striker Michael Owen has suffered another setback after it's been revealed that he will be out for another 2-3 weeks. Owen was expected to return from injury against Wolves last night but tore his hamstring in training prior to the game. Owen has been quoted as saying: "I had a tight groin quite a while ago and then I trained for a week in preparing for last night's game, but had a setback in training with a different muscle injury, so unfortunately that ruled me out for last night and is going to rule me out for a few weeks as well." Owen has played seven times for United this season, scoring three goals, two in the League Cup against Scunthorpe, which Man United won 5-2. The other came in the League, in the 2-2 away to Bolton. Owen has not played since the 0-0 draw against Sunderland in the Premier League at the beginning of October.
Late Winner From Hernandez Takes United Through To The Quarters
2010-10-27 00:30:00 Substitute Javier Hernandez scored a very late winner against Wolves to take Manchester United through to the Quarter-Finals of the Carling Cup . Sir Alex Ferguson made 11 changes to the side with Ben Amos starting in goal, and Bebe made his first start for the club. Wes Brown, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans, Fabio Da Silva, Gabriel Obertan, Michael Carrick, Darron Gibson, Ji-Sung Park and Federico Macheda all came into the side. Youngsters Ravel Morrison, Magnus Eikrem and Robbie Brady were named on the bench along with Tomasz Kuszczak, Gary Neville, Hernandez and Rafael Da Silva. A very forgettable first half was overshadowed by a much brighter second half, which saw five goals scored. The first of the five came in the 56th minute after Bebe's strike took a deflections off Wolves defender George Elokobi and over keeper Wayne Hennessey to give United the lead. The ball was cleared by Kevin Foley but the ball did go over the line and the goal was correctly awarded. United's celebr... More About: Winner

Rooney Agrees Five-Year Deal
2010-10-22 15:06:00 After days of rumours, speculation, statements and press conferences the Wayne Rooney saga has been put to bed. After wanting to leave the club, the striker has changed his mind and agreed a new five-year deal with Manchester United. Only a few days earlier, Rooney said: "I met with David Gill last week and he did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad? "I then told him that I would not be signing a new contract." Meetings took place yesterday and today, which has resulted in the striker having a change of heart and agreeing a new contract. In an interview published today on ManUtd.com, Rooney said: ?I?m delighted to sign another deal at United. In the last couple of days, I?ve talked to the Manager and the owners and they?ve convinced me this is where I belong. I said on Wednesday the Manager?s a genius and it?s his belief and support that have convinced me to stay. ?I?m signing a new deal in the absolute belief that the management, coaching... Comfortable But Uneventful Win For United
2010-10-20 23:25:00 Luis Nani?s sixth minute goal was enough to pick up a vital three points in their Champions League match against Bursaspor. All the talk ahead of the game was about Man United ?s wantaway striker Wayne Rooney. There was no Rooney but the crowd showed their support for the manager with a cheer as he walked out for the game. The fans also made their feelings clear to the striker with one banner saying- 'Colleen forgave you, Wayne, we won't?. There were five changes to the side that started against West Brom with Tomasz Kuszczak, Chris Smalling, Darren Fletcher, Ji-Sung Park and Federico Macheda all coming into the team. Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Rafael da Silva, Michael Carrick, Anderson and Nani all kept their places. Striker Crisis Threatens To Derail United Bid
2010-10-13 13:33:00 They say confidence is everything in football - never has that been truer than in the case of Wayne Rooney. A player who at one point last season was unstoppable, turned in another abject performance last night during England's dismal 0-0 draw with Montenegro, leaving Sir Alex Ferguson with a major dilemma ahead of Saturday's crucial Premier League match with West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford. Rooney's recent performances for England have been dreadful and his performances in a Man Utd shirt haven't been much better. It represents a major decision for the United boss just what to do with his star player. Rooney clearly isn't operating at full fitness and his mental state cannot be much better in the wake of recent press allegations regarding his personal life. In an ideal world, I believe Ferguson would like to take Rooney out the spotlight for an extended period, allowing him to regain his fitness and passion for football. The problem he has though is that by ...
Can Man Utd Afford To Replace Club Legends?
2010-10-08 17:02:00 It is fair to say that Man Utd have not had the greatest start to the season and that the teams looks considerably weakened without a fit Wayne Rooney. Rooney has struggled to regain the form he showed prior to his injury earlier this year, which has meant that the team has needed inspiration from other parts of the team. Baerbatov has had a fantastic start to the season for Man Utd both scoring and creating, however he is not able to have the same impact that Rooney. He is not the same type of player as Rooney and he doesn?t have himself as a strike partner like Rooney had last year. How United must hope Rooney can use next weeks Euro 2012 qualifier for England to help him regain his best form. News leaked out this week that Edwin Van der Sar looks set to retire at the end of the season, this hasn?t been much of a surprise with Man Utd continually being linked with goalkeepers throughout Europe, but it has opened up a debate on whether Man Utd can actually afford to r... Macheda Quotes Cause A Stir
2010-10-07 14:15:00 Federico Macheda gave an interview to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, during the interview he apparently branded team-mate Wayne Rooney as ?working class and vulgar?. Macheda is quoted as saying: ?Rooney is a really great person, he always gives me advice, but he?s a bit working class and vulgar.? It is very likely, in my opinion, that these quotes somewhere along the line have been mistranslated. Would he really say that about one of his team-mates, even if he does think it? Players are often misquoted and it seems like this is another case of this happening. More About: Quotes
Another Draw Away From Home For United
2010-10-02 20:05:00 Earlier on this evening, Man United were held to yet another draw away from home. That is now four away matches in the league, four draws and eight points dropped, for a side looking to win the Premier League, that isn?t good enough. Saying that, Sunderland had the better opportunities, and they looked like the team more likely to score, so overall a point was probably a point gained rather than two dropped.. Things hadn?t gone too well even before the game kicked off. The match had to be postponed for 20 minutes after a water pipe had burst in the United dressing room, resulting in the ceiling collapsing. Sir Alex Ferguson made four changes to the team who started against Valencia midweek. Even though he was ruled out for 10 days during the week, Paul Scholes started in midfield. John O?Shea, Michael Owen and Federico Macheda were also brought into the starting XI. Wayne Rooney was left out all together, Dimitar Berbatov was named on the bench. The starting XI was- Edwin Van Der Sar, Rafael da Silva, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Anderson, Luis Nani, Ji-Sung Park and Dimitar Berbatov. United's first opportunity fell to Berbatov, whose effort from outside the penalty area fell just wide of the goal. Valencia started to pile on the pressure on United's defence, with three good chances, the best falling to Roberto Soldado, who had an open goal to aim for but headed over the bar. The striker is now set to miss the Premier League game against Sunderland and England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro. "It will be two to three weeks. But it depends because Wayne has done quite well with his recovery from injury in the past." Sir Alex also confirmed that Scholes will be out for a short time with a slight calf problem. The good news is that Rio Ferdinand is set to return to the defence alongside Nemanja Vidic, for the first time this season. Hargreaves Back In Training
2010-09-24 13:48:00 In an exclusive interview with MUTV this morning, Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that long term absentee Owen Hargreaves has returned to training. Hargreaves joined Man United from Bayern Munich back in 2007, since joining he has only managed 38 appearances. 34 of those appearances were made in the 2007/2008 season. The last time Hargreaves started a game for the first team was back in September 2008 in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Since then has has played some minutes for the reserves and made an 89th minute substitute appearance against Sunderland on the 2nd May 2010. Hargreaves has been suffering from tendinitis in both knees, having multiple operations. Speaking to MUTV, Sir Alex said: "Owen Hargreaves has come back training, he trained yesterday with the first team. He looked very good. I was surprised actually how good he was looking.
