Scunthorpe United v Manchester United Preview

Tonight Manchester United start off their defence of the Carling Cup with a trip to Glanford Park to play Championship side Scunthorpe United. The two sides have never met each other in a competitive match. The last time Man United were knocked out of the Carling Cup was back in 2007 when Coventry beat United 2-0 at Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson will ring the changes from the side who beat Liverpool 3-2 last Sunday. The manager has already confirmed that Bebe will make his debut and Michael Owen will start. Gary Neville, Darron Gibson, Anderson and Javier Hernandez are all likely to start. Manchester United start off their campaign to retain the Carling Cup tomorrow when they visit Championship side Scunthorpe United. New signing Bebe was left out of the reserve team last night, who beat Bury 5-1. This has resulted in rumours that he could be named in the squad to face Scunthorpe. Since joining United in the summer, Bebe has played for the reserves and Portugal U21?s but is yet to make his debut for the first team. After signing for just over £7million, Bebe has received negative press, especially from the Daily Mail after his performance for Portugal and the reserves. His performance for the reserves wasn?t that bad and it was a poor performance by the whole team.

It looked like Man United were going to throw away a lead for the third time this season but luckily for United, Dimitar Berbatov had other ideas. Berbatov hasn't had the easiest of times since joining Man United from Tottenham back in the summer of 2008. Today he has become the first United player to score three against Liverpool in 64 years, which in turn has won over many fans. Tomorrow lunchtime archenemies Manchester United and Liverpool will go head-to-head at Old Trafford, both looking to leave with three Premier League points. Sir Alex Ferguson fears that Antonio Valencia ?s season could be over after suffering a possible break and dislocation against Rangers on Tuesday night. The winger suffered the injury midway through the second half after a fair challenge by Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot. Unfortunately his studs got caught in the turf and the Ecuadorian stayed on the ground in agony. It was immediately obvious to the Rangers players that it was serious, they called for medics and a stretcher straight away. Valencia was stretched off the field with an oxygen mask and taken straight to hospital. He will now have an operation on his left ankle sometime this morning. After two late injury time goals, both teams left Goodison Park with a point. Long-term injury absentee Owen Hargreaves has been included in Manchester United's Premier League squad. New rules state that every Premier League club must submit a squad of a maximum of 25 players. Eight of the 25 must be home-grown players. For a player to be considered as 'home-grown' they must have been trained in England or Wales for three seasons before they turned 21. Clubs can play an unlimited amount of players under the age of 21. The managers can now only choose the players (not including those under the age of 21) from now until the re-opening of the transfer window in January. According to Sky sources, Wigan have agreed a deal with Manchester United to take Tom Cleverley on loan. Wayne Rooney scored his first goal in almost five months as he helped Man United secure a comfortable 3-0 win over West Ham at Old Trafford. The UEFA Champions League group stage draw was made in Monaco earlier on today. Manchester United will face Valencia , Rangers and Bursaspor in the group stage of the Champions League. Manchester United haven't had much luck in the last two games against Fulham at Craven Cottage, losing both times. They went into the game without striker Wayne Rooney, who had picked up a stomach virus, Rio Ferdinand, Anderson and Owen Hargreaves were all out injured. It looked like United's luck had changed after an own goal handed them the lead, which was followed minutes later by a fortunate penalty handed to the away side. Luis Nani's penalty was saved by keeper David Stockdale, Fulham then went on to get an equaliser in the 89th minute. Paul Scholes opened up the scoring with one of his trademark strikes. Rodrigo Possebon is set to leave Manchester United for Brazilian side Santos . The deal is not yet done but a four-year contract should be finalised tomorrow. The 21-year old joined Man United in January 2008, unfortunetly his time will most be remembered for the injury he suffered against Middlesbrough in the League Cup in 2008. According to Santos? website, Possebon has said: "It is a pleasure to be at a club like this. It is a unique opportunity and I will work hard to give my best here. I hope to play a lot of football." ?It was a great experience playing in Europe and I have made progress as a player. Now, I want to adapt as quickly as possible, ? Manchester United have beaten Chelsea 3-1 at Wembley to win the first silverware of the season. Antonio Valencia opened up the scoring, that was followed with a comical goal from substitute Javier ?Chicharito? Hernandez. A few rumours last night suggested that Man United midfielder Anderson had been pulled unconscious from a burning car. These reports have been confirmed and Anderson is lucky to be alive. The 22-year old was driving his £125,000 car after leaving a nightclub in Portgual, smashing into a wall at around 7am. An unconscious Anderson was pulled from the car, just moments before it exploded. The Audi R8 is a two-seater car but there were two other people in the car with him, his friend and an unknown woman. It?s thought that the woman came off worse but all three have been released from hospital. Anderson had been recovering from a knee injury. A spokesman for Anderson said he'd suffered "an almighty scare" and that he should soon return to Manchester to continue his recovery. Manchester United lost their third pre-season match last night after a 2-1 loss to the Kansas City Wizards, who played with 10 men for just over half the game. Luis Nani returned to the starting line-up after recovering from a broken collarbone. Youngster Ben Amos started in goal with a young back line of Rafael Da Silva, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Ritchie De Laet. Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes provided some experience in midfield with Darron Gibson and Nani also starting. Up front and 22-year old Mame Biram Diouf lined up alongside Dimitar Berbatov. The first goal of the game only came 11 minutes in, after some poor defending from Rafael, who had been caught napping, Davy Arnaud was clear through on goal and gave the Wizards the lead. Man United?s defending was awful throughout the game. Rafael was slow, he was being given the run around by Arsenal reject Ryan Smith and his positioning was poor, especially for the first goal. Manchester United continued their 2010 pre-season tour with a 1-0 win over Philadelphia Union . Sir Alex Ferguson made six changes to the starting XI who beat Celtic 3-1 a few days ago. Tomasz Kuszczak, John O?Shea, Wes Brown, Tom Cleverley, Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck were all brought into the starting line-up. A tough match was decided by the only goal of the game, which came in the 76th minute. It wasn?t the best of games, but some of the younger players got some much-needed time on the field. Welbeck stood out after a very hardworking performance and it would have been nice to see him score. First half and United made a bright start and could have bagged an early goal after a shot from Obertan but it hit the side netting. Obertan was involved in another move from United not long after but again there was no end product.
