Malaysian Thomas Cup Lineup Announced
2008-04-26 09:49:00
Men's SinglesLee Chong WeiWong Choong HannHafiz HashimArif LatifMen's DoublesChoong Tan Fook/Lee Wan WahKoo Kien Keat/Tan Boon HeongMohd. Zakry/Mohd. FairuzizuanEverything is pretty much expected, except for the 4th Singles position of Arif Latif. He was selected above veteran Lee Tsuen Seng for the Thomas Cup tie. I believe this is a very bad decision. As I commented before:I can NOT imagine Arif playing as the 4th Singles for the Malaysian team, and managing to pull off a win against the more formidable opponents. Lee Tsuen Seng has experience playing (and upsetting) in the Thomas Cup, and other than his stamina, is a superb player. The 4th singles is supposed to be a reserved player, hence, Tsuen Seng most probably will be only used for perhaps 1 game when any one of the players want to rest. Hence, he is the perfect player in Malaysia for that position - good skills, but low stamina is a perfect 4th singles player.Skill wise, Arif is a good player, but Tsuen Seng is the obvious...

Asian Badminton Championship Post Mortem & Thomas Cup Analysis
2008-04-21 06:20:00
Malaysia failed to win any titles at the just concluded Asian Badminton Championship s, with both our top tier men and women players bowing out unexpectedly. Our men, Lee Chong Wei, Kien Keat and Boon Heong, and Tan Fook and Wan Wah failed to reach the finals, while Wong Mew Choo bowed out early too. While some may brand the Asian Badminton Championship as a total disaster of an outing for Malaysia, there were several pleasing performances, especially from our second tier players. Wong Choong Hann and Hafiz Hashim managed to scalp Chen Yu and Bao Chunlai, a welcoming improvement in the depth of our Men's Singles, which before this, was experiencing a crisis. This certainly takes some pressure of Lee Chong Wei to perform, knowing that he has several notable players to back him up. Kien Keat and Boon Heong on the other hand, according to my calculations, which will officially take over as Malaysia's top Men's Doubles pair at the Thomas Cup, put up a commendable fight against Lee and ...

Asian Badminton Championships - Finals Predictions
2008-04-20 05:26:00
Candra Wijaya/Nova Widianto vs. Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong DaeI have not seen Candra and Nova playing together yet, and I look forward to seeing them play. However, I have been extremely impressed with the way Candra and Nova have been creating upset after upset. Now, they face the overwhelming favorites and All England Champions Jung and Lee. Jung and Lee were impressive yesterday, but the question is that whether they can continue their scintillating performance. Hard to predict the winner.Chen Jin vs. Park Sung HwanMission accomplished by team China, after yesterday's acting by Lin Dan and Chen Jin. They should go for the Academy Awards. Seriously, the BWF should look into all these match fixing - if this were to happen in tennis, you would be sure that they would be suspended. However, in predicting this match, I think Park holds the upper hand, as I am extremely impressed by his dismissal of Sony Dwi Kuncoro in a titanic 70 minute match yesterday. Chen, after his 'convincing' wi...

Kien Keat and Boon Heong Lost, BUT
2008-04-19 12:26:00
... they deserve to stand tall. After a grueling and exciting match that lasted more than an hour, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong heartbreakingly succumbed to the near flawless play from the reigning All England Champions Jung and Lee. After looking at their performance, I conclude that they have nothing to be ashamed of, and should stand tall and proud after putting up a good fight.Koo and Tan came into this match wanting to prove to the world that they are back. Although they failed to defend their runners-up position, they still managed to achieve that goal - the world now knows that they are back. In particular, I want to congratulate Tan Boon Heong, and say that: there is nothing to be ashamed of, and don't be too overly upset. If you don't win here, keep trying, and keep fighting! Thats the spirit that champions need, and that is the spirit you exhibited here today, and you should be throughly proud of yourself, as we are of you. From defeat, comes experience. From defeat, a...

Asian Badminton Championships - Semifinals Predictions
2008-04-19 04:51:00
After the near-total annihilation yesterday, the only Malaysian survivors Koo and Tan hope to keep our flag flying.Wang Chen vs. Jiang YanjiaoJiang is a recovering player slowly making back lost ground while Wang Chen has always been 'up there'. Both of them disposed of lesser known Japanese opponents yesterday, and have not really been tested this whole tournament. I believe Jiang will eventually prevail in a very very tight match, that would probably go to 3 games.Chen Jin vs. Lin DanChen Jin will win in two sets. You would be stupid to bet against that. Why? Ask Li Yongbo.Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong vs. Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong DaeThe former All England Champions take on the reigning All England Champions. Koo and Tan finally got their revenge against Fairuz and Zakry yesterday, while Jung and Lee come in as the second seeds and favorites after the defeat of Choong and Lee yesterday. I believe Koo and Tan are a rejuvenated and reformed team, and will beat the World Championship ...

Have you checked out mudah.com.my? I know most of you are Malaysian readers, and are badminton fanatics. Did you know that you can find many new or secondhand badminton goods online? Like when I search 'badminton', instantly I can select from a wide range of badminton products. But thats not all folks, I can conveniently sort them by price, and read descriptions.check out this product here:I can contact the advertiser and then query about the product. The advertisers can be a private or a company advertiser, and they often respond to requests of more information. You can even request a testing of the equipment!Often, these products are at least twice the time cheaper than the normal market price! The only reason the owners are getting rid of it is because they have lost interest in badminton, or have found a better racquet or equipment. So if you want cheap stuff, and you to browse it from the convenience of your home, do log on to mudah.com.my , the and check it out!If you are an ...
Asian Badminton Championships - Day 3 Analysis
2008-04-18 03:17:00
Yesterday has been a extremely good day for Malaysia, except for a minor hiccup. But lets focus on the good things:Hafiz Hashim managed to beat World Number 3 Bao Chunlai in 3 sets. This is extremely significant because 1. he is in the quarterfinals, a first in a long long long long time 2. he beat Bao 3. he won in 3 sets. Hafiz Hashim's usual weakness is his stamina, lack of confidence and lack of focus. However, he has managed to overcome all of these weaknesses to gain a timely confidence boost ahead of the Thomas Cup. This certainly spells good things for the Malaysian contingent. Hafiz faces Sony Dwi Kuncoro today, and while I agree that Sony is a formidable opponent, I think Hafiz, having overcome all his weaknesses, would be able to - seize the day.Wong Choong Hann was impressive in his dismissal of the slumping Chen Yu. I have nothing against Chen Yu, but I think he, together with Chen Hong, will be slowing fading into the scenes. Choong Hann was extremely impressive, espe...

Asian Badminton Championships Quarterfinals Predictions
2008-04-18 02:53:00
Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir vs. Xie Zhongbo/Zhang YawenWith an Olympic berth at stake, Xie and Zhang will be going all out to try to defeat the World Number 1s. However, Nova and Lilyana are no easy meat to be pushed aside. If this were a normal matchup, I would certainly say that the Indonesians have the upper hand. However, Nova has been playing in Men's Doubles too, and we all know he is not young in badminton age. Being the glue that holds the partnership together, I worry for his stamina. Xie/Zhang in 3 games, or Nova/Lilyana in 2.Wang Lin vs. Wong Mew ChooMew Choo has not really met any tough opponents, neither has Wang Lin. However, both appear to be unconvincing. The question is: Will Mew Choo want to join her (boy)friend how that Chong Wei is out :P ? Tough to say as both are not performing up to their usual standards. However, experience-wise, I have to give it to Wong. Wong in 3.Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah vs. Lee Jae Jin/Hwang Ji ManChoong and Lee have been impressive ...

Asian Badminton Championships Day 3 Predictions
2008-04-16 18:03:00
After the numerous upsets yesterday, day 3 appears to be more scripted.Lydia Cheah vs. Kaori ImabeppuLydia created one of the suprise upset yesterday, unseating seventh seed Kaori Mori in 2 straight sets to advance to the second round. Today, she faces another Kaori, this time, less experienced and less heard of Kaori Imabeppu. After yesterday's timely confidence boost, Lydia should easily take this one.Julia Wong vs. Ai GotoAfter disposing of Indian ace Saina Nehwal in 3 hard sets yesterday, Julia takes on Ai Goto, a lesser known Japanese shuttler who beat another Malaysian, Tee Jing Yi. Like Lydia, Julia should be able to win this match with ease.Tan Wee Kiong/Woon Khe Wei vs. He Hanbin/Yu YangIt will be a tough ask for Wee Kiong and Khe Wei to beat Hanbin and Yuyang, the newly crowned Indian Open champions. However, I do think it is time for a breakthrough from the Asian Junior Champions, after being exposed to many senior tournaments. Malaysia have gone without a superb Mixed D...

Thomas Cup 2008 Analysis
2008-03-24 10:06:00
You are probably wondering whether The Badminton Blog has gone AWOL. No, it hasn't. The Badminton Blog is just working on bringing its readers a live telecast to its readers. Be patient :).Anyway, after vowing not to make any more predictions for the Thomas Cup, I have decided to analyze Malaysia's position.Malaysia has lost the reliability of a crucial pair Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong. They have failed to beyond the second round of any tournament this year, and has dropped steadily down th rankings. This certainly doesn't help Malaysia's cause. Once viewed as unbeatable, this pair seem to have hit a few snags. On the brighter side, Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah have stood up and seem be back in form. However, I still think they would be fielded as the second singles regardless of their rankings (a country does not have to follow the official ranking in fielding players in positions). I will explain this later.Lee Chong Wei's surprisingly tame defeat in the hands of Lin D...

Swiss Open Finals Predictions
2008-03-16 09:17:00
Xie Xingfang vs. Zhang NingFinally a world number 1 vs. world number 2 match since last year's China Masters. Both have been unimpressive lately, but it is still enough to claim the title before it is even played. I believe Xie Xingfang will be the victor today, as her speed seems to have recovered. Xie in 3 tight sets.Lin Dan vs. Lee Chong WeiThe match of the day. Lin Dan, the world number 1, takes on Lee Chong Wei, the world number 2. Lee Chong Wei has made huge improvements lately, and is inching closer and closer to Lin Dan's number 1 spot. Lin Dan, after his shock defeat in the hands of Lee Hyun Il in the Korean Open , and to Chen Jin in the All England (although not so 'shocking' if you asked Li Yongbo) will be raring to claim his first title of the year. Lee on the other hand, would want to avenge his defeat in the hands of Lin during last year's Hong Kong Open. Tricky to predict who would prevail, but I would say Lee Chong Wei in 2 sets.Lee Yong Dae/Jung Jae Sung vs. Mar...

Swiss Open 2008 Semifinals Predictions
2008-03-15 07:02:00
Mohd. Zakry/Mohd. Fairuzizuan vs. Hendra Setiawan/Markis KidoIt has been a stunning tournament, with the Malaysian pair downing the third and eighth seeds to reach their first semifinals of the year. The Indonesians on the other hand, have been equally as impressive so far, barely being tested. It is often rumored that once Hendra and Markis make it past the first few rounds, they will be unstoppable. It will be a good test for Zakry and Fairuz to see whether they can slip into the position of 2nd Men's Doubles in the upcoming Thomas Cup, and see whether Markis and Hendra can back up their Malaysian Open title after the exit of two of the top three seeds. Lee Chong Wei vs. Wacha PrzemyslawWacha (pronounced wa-ha if I am not wrong) has had an impressive tournament so far, claiming several notable players on the way. On the other hand, world number 2 Lee Chong Wei has yet to lose a set in this tournament. Bet is on Lee to finish this game quickly to set up a mouth watering final betw...

Swiss Open Round 2 Predictions
2008-03-13 07:00:00
After a tumultuous day 1, it remains to be seen whether the seeds can hold their ground against a vastly different playing field.Anthony Clark/Donna Kellog vs. Gail Emms/Nathan RobertsonIt is unfortunate that mixed doubles players of such a high calibre have to face off in such early rounds. Both are English players, with Gail and Nathan being the more highly regarded. Thus, Gail and Nathan would prevail in 3 sets.Yip Pui Yin vs. Zhu LinYip managed to upset world number 1 Xie Xingfang in last week's All England, and now faces another credible and powerful opponent in her way. The reigning world champion Zhu Lin is certainly a credible force to be reckoned with. Although the hard smashing Yip appears to be in superb form, I still think Zhu will be too good for her. Zhu in 3 sets.Wong Mew Choo vs. Zhou MiVery tricky for Mew Choo. Although rated lower, ex world number 1 Zhou Mi seems to be surging back into form. It will be a very tricky second round match for both players. However, I...

All England Semifinals Predictions

Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah vs. Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong DaeThe Malaysian veterans have been impressive so far, not dropping a set throughout this tournament. Can they emulate Koo and Tan's feat last year of winning the tournament without losing a set? Jung and Lee on the other hand, have also been impressive. I think that Choong and Lee should make it through to their third All England final, where they will hopefully win before retiring.Lee Chong Wei vs. Chen JinAfter yesterday's speedy disposal of Indonesian ace Taufik Hidayat, Lee Chong Wei looks set to enter his first All England final of his career. Chen Jin has hardly been tested so far in this tournament, and might be stiff opposition for Lee. However, I expect Lee to be able to hold his cool to enter the finals against either Bao Chunlai or Lin Dan.Lin Dan vs. Bao ChunlaiProvided that there is a match, and provided the match isn't fixed, I think Lin Dan will nick a win against the newly improved Bao. However, our favorite ...

Lee Yong Dae/Lee Hyo Jung vs. Zheng Bo/Gao Ling Zheng and Gao return after 3 months of exile from the badminton world. The Koreans however, have already started making waves in the international badminton scene in the absence of the reigning world number 1. Both pairs, I believe, have not met each other before, and it would be very interesting to see which pair prevails. The key will be how sharp Hyo Jung is and whether Gao Ling would be too tired.Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah vs. Luluk Hadiyato/Alvent YuliantoIt will be a veterans vs. veterans match. Choong and Lee have been impressive lately, and yesterday exacted revenge on half a world champions - USA shuttlers Howard Bach and Khan Bob Malaythong. However, Luluk and Alvent have also seen a sudden resurgence of form. However, I still think the advantage lies with the Malaysians after being the only one left standing. Choong and Tan to take it in 3 sets.Lee Chong Wei vs. Taufik HidayatThe match of the day. Taufik's form has been su...

Politics and Badminton Should NOT Mix
2008-03-07 03:32:00
It is with great sadness that I read the following article from malaysiakini: Badminton and politics meet in GopengLee Chong Wei, Malaysia's number 1 Men's Singles shuttler, campaigned for the Barisan National, a political party in Malaysia for the upcoming General Elections tomorrow. I am a great fan of Lee, and of Badminton, and anyone who knows me can testify to this. However, I have to say that I am deeply offended and disappointed by Lee's decision to involve politics in this wonderful sport. His integrity and by association, the integrity of the sport has been tainted and stained by this selfish act.Shuttlers win titles and medals for the country, for the glory of the people. It is the taxpayer's money that Lee uses to help in his training and development. To use his glory and fame, which he owes to the people of Malaysia, to campaign for a particular political party is a highly and deeply offensive to the people of Malaysia. You are a representative of Malaysia, and I eq...

All England 2008 Round 2 Predictions
2008-03-06 03:05:00
After the carnage in round 1, I expect the dust to settle in day 2.Many people say that it was a big lost for Malaysia yesterday. Admittedly yes, but I would say the only blow in terms of Malaysia's chances at a title was Koo and Tan's defeat. All others were not really true contenders for the title.Lee Chong Wei vs. Tommy SugiatoTricky second round match for the world number 2. Son of former legend Icuk Sugiato, Tommy is an up and rising star from Indonesia. However, I don't expect him to be able to upset the Malaysian number 1. Lee in 2 sets, and progressing to meet either Taufik Hidayat or Ngyuen Tien Minh.Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah vs. Howard Bach/Khan Bob MalaythongThis American pair upset Tan Bin Shen and Ong Soon Hock yesterday. Now, Choong and Lee want revenge against this pair who previously beat them in round one of the Danish Open. Choong and Lee have been impressive lately, although they haven't been up against credible opposition. Choong and Lee in 2 sets, then pro...

China vs. Indonesia - A Better Chance Perhaps?
2008-02-25 01:50:00
This is part 2 of a 3 part series on the Thomas Cup's predictions. Part 1 here CHINA vs. INDONESIAMen's Singles 1Lin Dan vs. Taufik HidayatAlthough Sony Dwi Kuncoro is rated higher than Taufik, I think Indonesia will field Taufik instead of Sony. Indonesia will want to reserve Sony for later matches, as Sony might have a better chance against Chen Jin or Bao Chunlai. Furthermore, Taufik is one of the players in the world that genuinely have to ability to beat Lin Dan. The nature of the tie, whether it will be a China whitewash or tight encounter, will rest on the outcome of this game.Men's Doubles 1Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng vs. Markis Kido/Hendra SetiawanCai and Fu have currently worked themselves in a tricky position. No one is prepared to dismiss the ex world champions yet, but no one is banking on them either. The Indonesian World Number 1s on the other hand, are peaking at the moment. Too soon perhaps? Both of their performances in the All England and Swiss Opens will provide a mor...

Thomas Cup 2008 Results
2008-02-25 00:47:00
For all who missed the action on Sunday:Malaysia were winners in the Thomas Cup Preliminary Finals, but were losers psychologically, as Korea fielded a considerably weaker team:Lee Chong Wei vs. Shon Seung MoLee easily won 21-8 21-11 in 25 minutesKoo Kien Kiet/Tan Boon Heong vs. Lee Jae Jin/Jung Jae SungKoo and Tan lost 16-21 21-17 29-21, surprisingly to the lower rated Korean pair. This does not augur well for Malaysia's top pair for the Thomas Cup Finals and the All England.Wong Choong Hann vs. Lee Cheol HoWong easily brushed away the young Lee 21-6 21-17Abdul Latif/Mohd. Tazari vs. Hwang Ji Man/Park Sung HwanAlthough Park Sung Hwan is not a doubles player, the usually strong Malaysian doubles players were challenged and lost 21-19 21-18.Hafiz Hashim vs. Lee Yong DaeIf Hafiz lost, it would have looked extremely embarrassing. Lee Yong Dae is a doubles player! He won 21-17 21-10.In the end, Malaysia's singles players unusually delivered the winning points... All matches lasted les...

Thomas Cup 2008 - Can China's Dominance be Broken?
2008-02-12 02:41:00
This is part of a 3 part series on the Thomas Cup's predictions. China has won the last 2 Thomas Cup competitions with relative ease. In the last two Thomas Cup grand finales, China has only dropped one match. This year, China is undeniably the favourite to retain its title again; with impressively deep resources in the Men Singles department, consisting of of the Super Trio of Lin Dan, Bao Chunlai and Chen Jin, complemented by the unusually powerful strength in its doubles department, led by the dynamic duo of Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng and the pair paired up just for the Thomas Cup - Guo Zhendong/Xie Zhongbo, any team would be hard pressed to beat China. The traditional weakness of a Chinese team would be its Men's Doubles. Indeed, it is speculated that China lost many a Thomas Cup tie, even with Men's Singles legends such as Yang Yang and Zhao Jianhua, only because of its weakness. In the late 1980s till the early 1990s, China managed to break its jinx through the pair of Li Yongbo/...

A Solution?
2008-01-29 02:32:00
The recent unfortunate incident involving Badminton Men's Singles World Number 1 Lin Dan's outburst in Seoul clearly signals for a change in the Badminton World Federation's (BWF) adjudication system. The allegedly biased line calls, that subsequently caused much controversy in the badminton community obviously needs to be addressed to suite the growing demands for accountability and fairplay from not only the player, but badminton fans worldwide.   Understanding that the BWF has limited funds and resources, as this has been the reason given by the BWF for not wanting to install the immensely popular 'Hawkeye' system, the solution might lie in using and manipulating existing technology. Taking a leaf out of the sport of Cricket, which have implemented the 'Third Umpire' adjudicating system, where a disputed line call can be reviewed by another umpire by using video replays, the BWF can easily modify the existing technology to improve the adjudication system. If viewers ...

Is It Justified?
2008-01-28 10:09:00
In the light of Lin Dan's recent outburst over the unfair line calls in the recently concluded Korean Open, how much is too far when protesting linecalls?   Famous badass Tennis player John McEnroe was famous for throwing his tennis racquets and shouting at umpires while protesting unfair linecalls. His famous catchphrase: 'You cannot be serious' has frequently landed him in trouble with the tennis authorities. In the case of badminton on the other hand, we have the famous incident where Taufik Hidayat walked out of the stadium after several unfair linecalls during the finals of the Hong Kong Open 2006. Although one cannot blame these players for protesting, how far is considered too far? Should badminton players be allowed to express their dissatisfaction freely, till the extent of picking fights on the court?   The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has summoned Li Mao and Lin Dan to Kuala Lumpur for a hearing/inquiry regarding the incident that occurred yesterday. Wh...

For all you hot headed readers who want to find out and watch what really happened: All credit to elderplayer from the Badminton Central forums for the video. As you can see, the Korean adjudication system was, like in China Open 2007, to blame. However, the difference this time is that Lin Dan shouted, shoved, and threw his racquet. Lee Chong Wei did not. Li Mao scream and shrieked from the sidelines. Misbun did not.For pictures of the incident go to Badminton Loonsport.

This Should Not Happen Again!
2008-01-27 15:40:00
The Badminton Exclusive Article: Controversy and emotions ran high on the courts today in Seoul as a fought nearly broke out between World Number 1 Lin Dan and Korean Coach Li Mao. It all started with a line call that was wrong. The umpire corrected it. Then another one. The umpire corrected that too. And then two more. Four incorrect line calls against the same player. Smells fishy? Luckily, the umpire managed to adjust all the four incorrect calls. Already very much in doubt with the linesmen's ability to be impartial, Lin Dan continued playing. On the surface, everything seemed cool, calm, collected. On the inside, Lin Dan was boiling. The hot tempered Lin managed to keep his temper in control, just as long as the calls were corrected. Then came a line call that went against Lin. Immediately, Lin appealed to the umpire to once again, change it. Unfortunately, the umpire did not have a clear view of the shuttle, and following protocol, did not change the call. Incensed,...
