Jeff Ireland press conference recap
2008-04-17 20:02:00 For the first and last time prior to the NFL Draft, which is just 9 days away, Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland met with the media. So what was the highlight? Well, when asked about a question in regards to something along the lines of drafting players with potential against drafting productive college players (I do forget the actual wording of the question), Ireland actually made a slip up and said something about drafting the best player for this defense. The room burst out in laughter to which Jeff asked what he just said and the reporters pointed out that he said "for the defense." Ireland tried to correct himself, but it was an interesting moment. More on this as I hear it. Update [2008-4-17 13:22:16 by Matty I]: Here's the actual quote of the slip. Ireland said about the first pick, "You hope that he's a pillar of your defense for a long time." Then everyone laughed and it was pointed out to him what he had said. Talking Jake Long
2008-04-17 07:06:00 I've done this for some of the other potential #1 picks (Chris Long , Vernon Gholston, and Matt Ryan), so considering that the Dolphins are exclusively negotiating with Jake Long's agent right now, it's a good time to take a look at Jake. There's a lot of info here so it's relatively longer than most posts. And you will have to make the jump and click "Read More" to see the entire post. So where to begin? I guess we'll start with the most eye-opening statistics for an offensive lineman before getting into the scouting reports on him. Those stats? In his 4 year career at Michigan, Long has allowed just 2 sacks and committed just 2 penalties. The best part? Jake can actually identify when these things happened. He allowed a sack in 2007 against Vernon Gholston and the other was against Michigan State during his freshman season. As for his 2 penalties, one was a false start in 2007 against Northwestern and the other was a holdi... More About: Talking

Dolphins low-balling Jake Long?
2008-04-17 05:47:00 Here's an interesting report by Rob Rang, who covers the Browns for scout.com. He reports that the Dolphins initial offer to Jake Long was low. How low? While insiders maintain the Dolphins have Jake Long as the highest-rated prospect in the draft, their grade on the All-American offensive tackle is only slightly higher than that of pass rushers Vernon Gholston and Chris Long. The Dolphins are so torn as to whom to select, they're essentially auctioning off the pick - for the lowest contract. Insiders tell me the initial offer sent to Jake Long's representatives was $10-15 million less than what the first and second picks of last year's draft (Oakland quarterback JaMarcus Russell and Detroit wide receiver Calvin Johnson) stand to earn with their rookie deals. Should one of the three be willing to sign for a significantly lower sum, the Dolphins could find themselves drafting a player who they don't necessarily have ranked at the top of their board. Now that's low....

Jeff Ireland to talk publicly tomorrow
2008-04-17 03:14:00 I just wanted to point out that you can watch GM Jeff Ireland 's press conference tomorrow live on miamidolphins.com. It's scheduled to begin at 12:30 EDT. This is the last time the Dolphins will publicly talk about the draft before April 26's first pick. It'll be interesting to see what, if anything, Jeff says about their potential negotiations with the players who could be the top pick. While most teams end up saying very little at these press conferences, there is a belief out there that Ireland will actually be more honest than others: The truth is the Dolphins are acting quite civil about this whole draft thing. Ireland will talk about the draft for the first time Thursday. He isn't expected to unveil Miami's plans, but he isn't likely to lie either. And the reason one can be relatively certain Ireland won't lie Thursday is that he turned down multiple requests to talk about the draft last month at the NFL annual meeting. What They're Saying: Schedule Edition
2008-04-16 07:13:00 Unless you live under a rock, you know that the NFL's 2008 regular season schedule was released yesterday. And we talked about it quite a bit right here. So since I'm a little short on time, I thought we'd take a quick look around and see what others are saying about the Dolphins schedule. We start with head coach Tony Sparano, who basically states the obvious: "It's always been critical to win your divisional games, and that certainly will be true when we start our season, with two of our first three games against teams from the AFC East. And we certainly face a challenge at the end of the year, with four out of our final five games on the road, including an international game against the Bills in Toronto." He does make a good point, though. This is the second time since 1996 that the Dolphins will play divisional games in two of their first three games, and is the first time this will occur since 2003. Next, the Palm Bech Post's Edgar Thompson talks a little ... More About: Schedule , Edition

Jake Long doesn't want to be a Dolphin?
2008-04-15 20:02:00 FOX Sports' Jerry Czarnecki writes that he's been hearing Jake Long doesn't want to come to Miami: The word on the street is that Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long doesn't want to play for the Dolphin s, who continue to negotiate with him as the first overall draft choice. There's a special honor in being the first pick so Long's agents continue to talk. Of course, there is a deadline to these contract talks and then the Dolphins will move onto the next person on their board. Apparently, it isn't Virginia's Chris Long. Well there's a kick in the balls! However, don't jump to conclusions here. It's very possible that another team who wants Jake very badly (maybe the Rams or Falcons) have put this rumor out there so as to try and get the Dolphins to question Jake's motivation. After all, if you knew a player didn't want to come to your team, but would just because of the money and prestige of being #1 overall, would you draft him? I didn't think so...
The Value of Going #1
2008-04-15 07:08:00 With yesterday's news that the Dolphins have set deadline for Jake Long coming to terms with the Dolphins before moving on to plan B, there is now a question Jake and his agent, Tom Condon, will be forced to answer. That question is: what's the value of going first overall? Before really getting into it, though, let's first lay out the ground work by taking a look at the 3 most recent NFL Drafts and the contract that the top 4 picks in each draft signed: 2007 JaMarcus Russell - 6 yr/$61 mil, $32 mil guaranteed Calvin Johnson - 6 yr/$55 mil, $27.7 mil guaranteed Joe Thomas - 5 yr/$42 mil, $23 mil guaranteed Gaines Adams - 6 yr/$42 mil, $18.56 mil guaranteed 2006 Mario Williams - 6 yr/$54 mil, $26.5 mil guaranteed Reggie Bush - 6 yr/$52 mil, $26.3 mill guaranteed Vince Young - 6 yr/$58 mil, $25.74 mil guaranteed D'Brickashaw Ferguson - 6 yr/$37.5 mil, $17.9 mil guaranteed 2005 Alex Smith - 6 yr/$49.5 mil, $24 mil guaranteed Ronnie Brown - 5 yr/$34 mil, $19.5...
NFL Schedule to be announced tomorrow
2008-04-14 21:41:00 ProFootballTalk and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette are both reporting that the NFL's regular season schedule will be released tomorrow. PFT reports that it will be at 2 pm eastern tomorrow. That's exciting, though I usually don't get too pumped over this for 2 reasons. One, we already know who we are playing, just not when and where. Two, it's impossible to predict how hard or easy a schedule will be in April. Too many things change from year to year. With that said, though, there is one thing I'll be curious about: how many cold weather games will the Dolphins have to play in November and December? That's always an interesting thing to look for when the schedule does come out. As a refresher, below are the Dolphins' 2008 opponents: Home: Patriots, Jets, Bills, 49ers, Seahawks, Chargers, Raiders, Ravens Away: Patriots, Jets, Bills, Cardinals, Rams, Broncos, Chiefs, Texans Also, based on how the Florida Marlins' schedule looks, I think it's... Dolphins give Jake Long a deadline
2008-04-14 18:43:00 SI.com's Peter King is reporting that the Dolphins have indeed given Jake Long a deadline to come to terms with a contract. Here's what King writes in today's "Monday Morning Quarterback" column, which by the way, is the best weekly internet column about the NFL: Miami is negotiating with one player right now -- Michigan tackle Jake Long. There is a deadline, yes; I don't know what it is. But if Long doesn't agree to a deal -- think of something less than the six-year, $62-million deal ($31 million guaranteed) signed by JaMarcus Russell last year -- Parcells will move to his next guy. My educated guess -- which an NFL front-office acquaintance of Parcells seems sure of -- is that the next candidate will be Gholston, the Ohio State defensive end. Interesting that we're now a week removed from the initial reports about the negotiations that have started and still no reference to Chris Long. Apparently, Peter King now believes that Vernon Gholston is option #2 for t... More About: Deadline , Give

Weekend Roundup: Shockey, draft talk
2008-04-14 07:06:00 Hope everyone had a good weekend. Here's what you may have missed while you were busy doing whatever it was you were doing: SHOCKEY TO MIAMI? Some people actually threw this idea around as far back as February. But now, it seems the idea of Jeremy Shockey coming to the Dolphins isn't as far-fetched as once thought. Below is an excerpt from FOX Sports: Like a persistent cough, or a recurring dream, the reports of tight end Jeremy Shockey being traded from the Giants just refuse to cease and desist. The latest report has him shuffling off to Miami to come face to face with Bill Parcells, the guy he called a "homo" three years ago. In exchange for this multi-talented headache with two (bad) legs, the Dolphins are said to be contemplating parting with their second-round draft pick. ...Plausible? Perhaps, but not yet all that believable. The report says the trade can be made as late as draft day. The short little blurb also does go on to explain they are referring to... Mauia arrested; Grigsby celebrates
2008-04-12 00:37:00 As JMFlyer1454 points out in this diary, Dolphins FB Reagan Mauia has been arrested on charges of "simple battery," which is a misdemeanor that carries the potential for up to a year in jail and up to a $1,000 fine. And "simple" is exactly what it was. According to the report, Mauia was leaving a restaurant and went up to a man and his girlfriend in the parking lot. He reportedly asked the man "what the [beep] he was looking at." The victim said he wasn't looking at anyone. Mauia supposedly responded by saying "you should know" and then punched the man in the face with a closed fist. The man fell to the ground unconscious and with a bleeding mouth. Mauia fled the scene but was found and positively identified. So the question is, what should the victim have known? Maybe Mauia was referring to the fact that the man should know that Reagan is "the juggernaut." Either way, this isn't a good thing for Mauia, especially since he is denying it. Meanwhile, recently sign... More About: Arrested

Scouting Penn State's Justin King
2008-04-11 07:24:00 Many of you already know that one of the middle round players I like is UNLV linebacker Beau Bell. Well another player that really intrigues me is Penn State cornerback Justin King . King seems like one of those classic "boom or bust" players. But the thing is, he's just one year removed from a stellar sophomore season. And he has terrific measurables, at 5'11, 192, and he ran a 4.31 40. Now, NFL Draft Countdown has King ranked 4th on their prospect hot list. Here's what they say about King: Even before the start of the 2007 season there were strong indications that Justin King would enter the draft early, especially since he was on track to graduate after just three years, and even though he did not have the junior season most were expecting that's exactly what he did. On paper King looks like a Top 10 pick with an ideal blend of size (5-11, 192), speed (4.31) and athleticism but the problem is those physical tools have not always translated ...
Dolphins begin contract negotiations with Vernon Gholston
2008-04-10 18:40:00 Yesterday, it was announced that the Dolphins had begun contract talks with Michigan OT Jake Long. Now today, as pointed out by bassman, it is being reported by the Sun-Sentinel that talks are also underway between the Dolphins and Ohio State DE/OLB Vernon Gholston. Nit surprisingly, the Dolphins are going to enter contract talks with basically all of the players that they might pick as a way to pit one agent against another, allowing the Fins to get the best deal possible. Yesterday, you'll remember, John Clayton reported that the Dolphins will also likely enter contract talks with Virginia DE/OLB Chris Long and LSU DT Glenn Dorsey. Both Clayton and and Adam Schefter believe that they will not talk with Matt Ryan, though I wonder why they wouldn't. After all, the more people the Dolphins to contract with, the better. But as of right now, we know that the Dolphins are talking to two players, Jake Long and Vernon Gholston, about becoming the #1 overall pick.... More About: Contract , Negotiations

Dolphins Defensive Mock Depth Chart
2008-04-10 07:09:00 At the urging of one of our community members, OnTheGo, I decided to do a mock depth chart prior to the draft as a way to really see where this team needs the most help. To see the first part of this mock depth chart, click here. Now, onto the defensive side of the ball. Before we get started, though, a couple of notes. First, not all players will be listed, though I'll try to get everyone on here. Second, some players will be listed twice or more. No, it's not an error. Some players, especially in this kind of defense, can play more than one position. Lastly, we are assuming the team will use a base 3-4 defense, and that's what the mock depth chart will represent. DEFENSIVE END Depth Chart : Matt Roth, Randy Starks, Derrick Robinson, Rob Ninkovich This is going to be the make or break season for Matt Roth. He disappointed last year, but has good size and a good motor, which are two things Bill Parcells looks for. So... More About: Dolphins , Mock
**BREAKING NEWS: Dolphins begin contract negotiations with Jake Long**
2008-04-09 23:26:00 The Miami Herald is reporting that the Dolphins have begun contract negotiations with the agent for Michigan OT Jake Long . Tom Condon, who is also Matt Ryan's agent, has been in Davie already on behalf of Long at the Dolphins' request. Of course, the idea here is to reach a deal prior to the draft so that nobody has to worry about a long holdout that prevents the #1 pick from getting into training camp on time. We all remember how ugly Jason Allen's holdout got and we know that owner Wayne Huizenga vows to never again go through a situation like that. Last year, the Dolphins did get all of their picks, including first round pick Ted Ginn, under contract and into camp on time. The article adds that the Dolphins still like Chris Long, though no talks have started between the Dolphins and his agent: Miami is still intrigued by Virginia defensive end Chris Long, but no in-person talks between Chris Long's agent and Miami are believed to have taken place to date. However, the... More About: News , Breaking News , Contract
Dolphins doing homework on "post 1st round" players
2008-04-09 20:58:00 We've spent a lot of time talking about what the Dolphins should/might do with the first overall pick in the draft. However, like many of you, I also feel that the key to this draft will be those middle rounds where valuable starters are found (rounds 2-5). Well Barry Jackson has some info for us on who the Dolphins will be bringing into Davie in the coming days: The Dolphins, who are making linebacker a priority, are bringing in Auburn's Quentin Groves, a potential second-rounder with 26 career sacks, and UNLV's Beau Bell, a potential third-rounder. (FYI: Miami requested more tape of Georgia's Marcus Howard and has closely studied several potential second-round linebackers, including Oklahoma's Curtis Lofton, USC end/linebacker Lawrence Jackson, Purdue's Cliff Avril and Tennessee's Jerod Mayo, although none of those five was booked for visits.) The Dolphins scheduled at least two left tackles for visits, Nebraska's Carl Nicks (highly skilled, but character issues) and... More About: Players , Homework , Post , Round

Dolphins Offensive Mock Depth Chart
2008-04-09 07:05:00 I recently received an e-mail from one of our regular readers/community members, OnTheGo, with an idea for a post. He believes that a good way to try and predict what the Dolphins might do on draft day is by taking a good look at the current roster. He suggested doing a mock depth chart. So, being a man of the people, I've decided to take action on his suggestion. And I look for you guys to do the same in the "comments" below. Today we'll look at the offense and tomorrow we'll focus on the defense. Now, a few notes about this depth chart. First, it isn't 100% complete in the sense that it does not list everyone currently on the roster. Second, you will see some players listed twice. That's not a mistake. Rather, it's probably because that particular player could play more than one position. Look for this, especially, when talking about the lineman.
