Weekend Roundup
2008-04-07 07:25:00
It was a relatively quiet weekend in terms of Dolphin news.  Of course, it was a rather successful weekend for my currently first place St. Louis Cardinals (oh hell yea!!).  But here's what you might have missed this weekend while you were out and about as well as a little Jason Taylor trade nugget I'm tossing out your way. JASON TAYLOR TRADE TALK UPDATE You'll remember that about a month ago, I posted this story about the Jaguars being very interested in trading for Jason Taylor.  Two weeks later, Armando Salguero (among others in the mainstream media) also hopped on the "JT to the Jags" bandwagon.  Well, now another source of mine, a reliable one at that, told me over the weekend that he knows for sure that there is another team, along with Jacksonville, that is highly interested in trading for Taylor.  The problem?  He told me he "wasn't comfortable" telling me who this team was. So all we're left with is knowing that the Jaguars and a "mystery ...

Video Time: Cornerback Edition
2008-04-05 09:47:00
It's Saturday, meaning it's time for a video. Today, we got two for you. Both are of players the Dolphins could potentially target with pick #32 overall. The first is Arizona CB Antoine Cason: The second video is of Oklahoma DB Reggie Smith. Click "Read More" to see it. Here's Oklahoma's Reggie Smith, who could possibly play CB or S in the NFL: Feel free to discuss your thoughts on either of these 2 players below. Barring any breaking Dolphins news (which is unlikely), I'll see you back here Sunday night/Monday morning. Have a good weekend, all!

The Phinsider Community Mock Draft: Pick #16 - Arizona Cardinals
2008-04-04 18:29:00
With the 15th pick in The Phinsider Community Mock Draft , the Detroit Lions select Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon. Stewart received 29% of the vote, with Derrick Harvey getting 22% and Leodis McKelvin picking up 13%. So here are the last 5 picks of this mock draft: Buffalo Bills - Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma (25%) Denver Broncos - Jeff Otah, OT, Pitt (30%) Carolina Panthers - Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois (32%) Chicago Bears - Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt Detroit Lions - Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon To see the entire mock draft, click here. Next up, with the 16th overall pick, are the Arizona Cardinals.  Their draft needs are below, courtesy of NFL Draft Countdown: 1. Cornerback: Eric Green and Rod Hood aren't shutdown types by any stretch and Antrel Rolle has officially made the move to safety. That means they're now severely lacking in both quality and depth. 2. Defensive End: Darnell Dockett is a perfect fit at defensive end in their 3-4 scheme but the Cards could s...

Three Long Weeks...
2008-04-04 07:04:00
That's right, folks.  We are just 3 weeks away from what some might consider the most important draft in this franchise's history.  And when you think about it, that may very well be true.  This team is coming off of the single worst season in Miami Dolphins history (and almost in NFL history).  They basically fired the entire coaching staff and most front office personnel.  And then they bring in the big shot, Mr. Bill Parcells, to hopefully turn this thing around. Bill then gets right to business, bringing in a hand-picked general manager, Jeff Ireland, and a hand-picked head coach, Tony Sparano.  The three of them, the "trifecta," then basically reassemble the coaching staff from scratch, bringing aboard coaches who they are familiar with, have history with, and, most importantly, who they trust. Then you take into consideration the number of draft picks that the Dolphins have (which could very well increase).  They are armed with 9 total draf...

Preseason Opponents Released
2008-04-03 22:19:00
The Dolphins four preseason opponents have been announced.  They are the same as last season. Game 1: home vs Tampa Bay Game 2: road vs Jacksonville Game 3: home vs Kansas City Game 4: road vs New Orleans No dates or times have been set yet. As for the regular season schedule, it was supposed to be today.  I remember checking out the NFL Network television schedule and seeing the schedule release show listed for today.  But that has since been changed.  You'll remember that last year, the schedule was supposed to be released during the first week of April but was pushed back 5 days.  So the earliest we'll have the regular season schedule is likely next week. Update [2008-4-3 16:10:17 by Matty I]: The official site does have the dates and times of the home games. Here's how it looks: Saturday, August 9 - vs Tampa Bay (7:30) Saturday, August 23 - vs Kansas City (7:30)

The Phinsider Community Mock Draft: Pick #15 - Detroit Lions
2008-04-03 18:36:00
With the 14th pick in The Phinsider Community Mock Draft , the Chicago Bears select Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt. Williams picked up 52% of the vote.  Second place was Branden Albert with 10%. So here are the last 5 picks of the draft: New Orleans Saints - Keith Rivers, LB, USC (41%) Buffalo Bills - Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma (25%) Denver Broncos - Jeff Otah, OT, Pitt (30%) Carolina Panthers - Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois (32%) Chicago Bears - Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt To see the entire mock draft so far, click here. Up next, with the 15th pick, are the Detroit Lions .  For analysis and insight on the Lions, head over to Pride of Detroit.  Below are the Lions' draft needs, courtesy of NFL Draft Countdown: 1. Running Back: Kevin Jones was never able to stay healthy and was sent packing which essentially leaves little (Brian Calhoun) or nothing (Aveion Cason) on their roster at the running back position. 2. DOLPHINS ALMOST INVOLVED IN 3 WAY DEAL? According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Browns' GM Phil Savage decided to increase his offer to QB Derek Anderson because he feared a potential 3 way deal.  About this deal, Savage said: "It didn't matter if I was pretty convinced or just slightly. The threat of that being there [influenced him to raise the Browns' offer]." So what exactly was the deal?  Apparently, Savage believed that the Cowboys would sign Anderson to an offer sheet that included a "poison pill" that Cleveland couldn't match.  Dallas would then give Cleveland their #28 pick and their 3rd rounder as compensation.  The Cowboys would have then turned around and sent Anderson and the #22 draft pick to the Dolphins for the #1 overall pick, which they would have obviously used to select Darren McFadden. Interesting, huh?  Why did Savage get this feeling?  According to the paper, Savage said that he believed Bill Parcells really liked Anderson an...

The Phinsider Community Mock Draft: Pick #14 - Chicago Bears
2008-04-02 18:59:00
With the 13th pick in The Phinsider Community Mock Draft , the Carolina Panthers select Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois. This was the closest vote yet, with Mendenhall getting 32% and Chris Williams getting 31%. So here's how the last 5 picks look: Cincinnati Bengals - Sedrick Ellis, DT, LSU (80%) New Orleans Saints - Keith Rivers, LB, USC (41%) Buffalo Bills - Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma (25%) Denver Broncos - Jeff Otah, OT, Pitt (30%) Carolina Panthers - Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois (32%) To see the entire draft so far, click here. Up next, with pick #14, are the Chicago Bears .  Below are the Bears' draft needs, courtesy of NFL Draft Countdown: 1. Quarterback: Is there any doubt that this is #1? For years now the Bears have had issues under center and it may have cost them a Super Bowl. It's time to find a long-term solution once and for all. 2. Tony Sparano no longer a ghost
2008-04-02 07:03:00
As we all know by now, this new regime in Miami is very tight-lipped.  And new head coach Tony Sparano isn't an easy guy to get a hold of.  So it's big news when he is made available, which he was on Tuesday morning at the Owners Meetings during the "AFC Coaches Breakfast."  Though we weren't told what exactly Tony was eating, (I wouldn't be surprised if he was enjoying some rusty nails for breakfast...the dude is tough), he did supply us with some opinions.  Below are some of the highlights: ANTI-CAM Let's start out with this nugget, courtesy of Ethan Skolnick.  Skolnick says of Sparano: ...Straight talker, tough talker. No talking in circles. No surprises there. He's the anti-Cameron. ...Best line? When asked if he had soft spots for small college players, because of his history at New Haven, he said: "I have very few soft spots." ...He said he planned to be involved in every phase, even if it requires staying at the office past 1 a.m. ...On the rost...

The Case For Matt Ryan
2008-04-01 07:06:00
First, before we get into anything here, I did want to just point out that the 2008 SB Nation Mock Draft is officially underway.  I've made the first overall pick for the Dolphins and Ryan of Turf Show Times has made the second pick for the Rams.  You can follow along with this mock draft, as well as get insight from the owner of New Era Scouting, Matt Miller, by heading over to Matt's SBN blog, Mocking The Draft. Alright.  Now onto the business at hand.  Some people here have been clamoring for me to lay off Matt Ryan a bit.  And perhaps I've been a little hard on the kid.  So with that in mind, here are some of the things I like about the player affectionately known as "Matty Ice." The first thing that stands out is his size.  He's got the prototypical size that people look for in a quarterback, measuring in at just under 6'5 and 228 pounds.  And he's got a frame which would allow him to even add 5 to 10 pounds of muscle.  So he'...

Dolphins pick up two draft picks; and other notes
2008-03-31 22:55:00
The compensatory picks have been released and the Dolphins have picked up 2 additional draft picks. However, they aren't anything spectacular. For losing the likes of Sammy Morris, David Bowens, and a few others, the Dolphins received an additional 6th round pick (204th overall) and an additional 7th round pick (245th overall). Sure, it's nothing special.  But these late round picks can eventually become solid contributors, especially with solid talent evaluators running the show. Other Notes from Owners Meetings -The primetime games for week one have been announced. The Giants will host the Redskins on Thursday, September 4 in the season's first regular season game. Week 1's Sunday Night game will be the Colts hosting the Bears. Monday Night will feature a double header yet again, with the Packers hosting the Vikings at 7 pm eastern, followed by the Broncos visiting the Raiders at 10:15 pm eastern. -The 50% sale of the Dolphins to Stephen Ross has been appro...

Weekend Roundup
2008-03-31 07:14:00
Here's what you might have missed while you were out enjoying yourself this weekend: RICKY IS READY Here's an interesting and exciting nugget that Barry Jackson throws out to us in the Miami Herald yesterday: A friend of Ricky Williams said he has never seen the running back more determined and that Williams speaks of wanting to be one of the NFL's three to five best backs. Bill Parcells, who told Williams he believes in him, has pushed the right buttons, and Williams knows he needs money for his family. This is the kind of information that Dolphin fans have been dying to hear.  When you couple Ricky's determination this offseason with the fact that Ronnie Brown's rehab seems to be ahead of schedule, it's hard not to get excited for the potential of a much improved offense in 2008. However, the thing to remember, of course, is that a running game is only as strong as the people who are opening the holes for those backs to run through.  And right now, the Dolphins are...

Two videos for you today. Both are of potential #1 pick Jake Long . The first one is Jake Long against another potential top 10 pick, Florida DE Derrick Harvey. You'll see that he does a good job on Harvey, except for the first play where Harvey does kind of run over Long. And incase you're wondering what Jake likes to do in his spare time, see video #2 by clicking "Read More." Don't forget to cast your vote for the Bills' pick in our community mock draft, which can be found two posts below or by clicking here. I bet he's better than me at Guitar Hero. Dolphins sign safety Chris Crocker
2008-03-29 02:18:00
Adam Schefter is reporting that the Dolphins have signed free agent safety Chris Crocker to a 1 year, $1.15 million deal that includes $300,000 in guaranteed money.   Crocker is 28 years old and spent the last 2 seasons in Atlanta after starting his career in Cleveland and spending 3 seasons there.  I don't know too much about him.  So I went to various sites and read up on him and found that others don't know much about him, either.  One site said that he's good in pass coverage but struggles as a tackler and against the run.  Meanwhile, another site claims he's solid against the run but is a liability in coverage.  So who knows? Personally, from looking at his stats and measurables, I'm led to believe that he's better in coverage than against the run.  I say this because he's a bit small, at 5'11 and just 192 pounds, and he had a career high in interceptions (3) and pass deflections (11) in 2007.   Rotoworld goes on to say that Crock...

With the 10th pick in The Phinsider Community Mock Draft , the New Orleans Saints select Keith Rivers, LB, USC. This was a tight race, with Rivers picking up 41% of the vote and Leodis McKelvin getting 32% of the vote.  Jeff Otah was third, with 10%. So here's how the last 5 picks have gone: New York Jets - Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio St. (56%) New England Patriots - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, Tenn St. (32%) Baltimore Ravens - Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU (41%) Cincinnati Bengals - Sedrick Ellis, DT, LSU (80%) New Orleans Saints - Keith Rivers, LB, USC (41%) To see the entire draft so far, click here. My Ideal Dolphins Draft
2008-03-28 06:12:00
Now is a good time for me to throw out my ideal Dolphins draft.  Keep in mind that this is how I WANT the Dolphins to draft, not what I THINK they will do.  It's basically what I would do if I had the role of GM.  Note, though, that I am not including any trades.  That means I'm not predicting a Jason Taylor trade, though I still think it'll happen, and I'm not predicting any trades involving picks.  So I'll go through the 7 rounds and then I'll look to read your comments, either talking about my ideal draft or providing your own ideal draft.  Let's get to it. Round 1: Pick 1 Chris Long, DE, Virginia I've said all along that it comes down to three players, in my opinion.  Those are Chris Long, Jake Long, and Vernon Gholston.  I first rule out Gholston because he'd be more of a project to convert to outside linebacker in Miami's 3-4 defense than Chris Long would be.  With the #1 pick, I'd prefer to take a truly NFL-ready player ...

With the 9th pick in The Phinsider Community Mock Draft , the Cincinnati Bengals select Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC. Ellis picked up 80% of the vote, which is the largest total so far.  A distant second place was Keith Rivers with 5%. So here's how the last 5 picks in our draft have gone: Kansas City Chiefs - Ryan Clady, OT, Boise St. (30%) New York Jets - Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio St. (56%) New England Patriots - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, Tenn St. (32%) Baltimore Ravens - Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU (41%) Cincinnati Bengals - Sedrick Ellis, DT, LSU (80%) To see the entire draft so far, click here. MATT RYAN TO DOLPHINS? As first pointed out by "Natalya" as a comment in this diary, Matt Mosley writes the following in his Hashmarks blog on ESPN.com: I have Miami choosing Virginia defensive end Chris Long right now, but Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan is still a strong possibility. I think Ryan has the intangibles that Parcells is looking for, and it wouldn't be the first time the former head coach drafted a quarterback No. 1 overall (Drew Bledsoe). I'm told that Parcells has spent hours pouring over tape of Ryan and that he and GM Jeff Ireland have talked to pretty much anyone who's been associated with him. If the Dolphins can reach an agreement with Ryan before the draft, I think they take him. If not, they'll stick with Long. First, let's say this.  Mosley was a long time Cowboys beat reporter, so he is familiar with Bill Parcells, Jeff Ireland, and Tony Sparano.   However, Mosley began this entry by saying that the Dolphins are "the most tight-lipped org...

Thoughts on John Beck from a BYU fan's perspective
2008-03-26 22:33:00
In this diary, a reader by the screen name of "VegasPhinFan" gives us a little perspective on John Beck from his days at BYU.  Interesting stuff, so I decided to move it to the front page so those who missed it can read it: Yes, I'm another one of those BYU fans/Beck supporters that has recently began following the Dolphins because of John.  I just want to say a couple of things.   I was probably more disappointed in his rookie season than most of you.  He was a stud in college and in my opinion at that time, was better coming out of BYU than Steve Young was.  Most people place the blame on the coaching, but I'm not sure if that was it.  John just seemed to look like he did when he first started at BYU as a freshman.  To tell you the truth, I yelled at him constantly during his first two years at BYU.  He always overthrew his receivers and always rushed his decisionmaking.  He settled down for his last two years and was an absolute stud...

Dorsey finished with 41% of the vote.  Brian Brohm was 2nd with 22% and Leodis McKelvin was 3rd with 17%. So here's how our draft looks as of now: Miami Dolphins - Chris Long, DE, Virginia (49%) St. Louis Rams - Jake Long, OT, Michigan (67%) Atlanta Falcons - Matt Ryan, QB, BC (68%) Oakland Raiders - Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas (47%) Kansas City Chiefs - Ryan Clady, OT, Boise St. (30%) New York Jets - Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio St. (56%) New England Patriots - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, Tenn St. (32%) Baltimore Ravens - Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU (41%) Next up, with the 9th pick, are the Cincinnati Bengals .  For Bengals analysis and insight, you can check out Cincy Jungle.  Below are the Bengals' draft needs, courtesy of NFL Draft Countdown: 1. Talking Chris Long
2008-03-26 06:09:00
I've already gone on record and said that I don't want the Dolphins to have any part Matt Ryan.  So who do I want?  Well, there's three players I like a lot, and I would be satisfied with any of those 3 being chosen by the Dolphins.  Those 3 are Jake Long , Vernon Gholston, and Chris Long.  Today, though, we are talking Chris Long. There are plenty of scouting reports that you can read on Chris Long.  So I'll just post one of them for you guys to check out, courtesy of NFL Draft Countdown: Strengths: Has good size and bulk...Very active and has an unparalleled motor...Hard worker and team leader with top-notch intangibles...Strong, tough and powerful...Sheds blocks well...Outstanding hand use...Does a terrific job versus the run...Technically sound and understands leverage...Great in pursuit and has a burst to close...Real smart with good instincts and awareness...Versatile and could play in either a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme..Durable...Has a lot of experience..H...

Jason Taylor: the dancer and the football player
2008-03-25 22:21:00
First off, let's start with Jason Taylor , the football player. Armando Salguero has posted a new article in his blog that talks about the possibility of Jason Taylor being traded to the Jaguars: I have been told by one NFL scout and one NFL assistant coach that Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio (pictured) likes the idea of trading for Taylor. I am not sure exactly how far Del Rio has gone with this -- be it considering it and discarding the idea or actually pursuing the issue. But I do know the scenario of adding Taylor has been on the coach's mind. I will continue snooping around with some league sources and ask Del Rio about it directly at the NFL's annual meeting in Palm Beach next week. We'll soon find out if there is fire associated with this smoke. Now, not to pat myself on the back too much, but I actually talked about the Jaguars having high interest in trading for Taylor in this article posted back on March 6: But I've been told by a rather trustworthy source th...

Rodgers-Cromartie narrowly squeaked by Leodis McKelvin, 32% to 31%.  Glenn Dorsey was in third, with 14%. So the mock draft now looks like this so far: Miami Dolphins - Chris Long, DE, Virginia (49%) St. Louis Rams - Jake Long, OT, Michigan (67%) Atlanta Falcons - Matt Ryan, QB, BC (68%) Oakland Raiders - Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas (47%) Kansas City Chiefs - Ryan Clady, OT, Boise St. (30%) New York Jets - Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio St. (56%) New England Patriots - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, Tenn St. (32%) Next up, with the 8th pick, are the Baltimore Ravens.  For the latest analysis and insight into everything Ravens, check out Baltimore Beatdown.  Below are the Ravens' draft needs, courtesy of NFL Draft Countdown: 1. Talking Hokies
2008-03-25 06:07:00
In Monday's Miami Herald, Barry Jackson informed us of this little Dolphins nugget in his latest article: The Dolphins are interested in several Virginia Tech players and sent at least three officials to their Pro Day on Thursday -- more than the norm. Defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers studied four big linemen -- Barry Booker, Chris Ellis, Carlton Powell and Kory Robertson. Receivers coach Karl Dorrell watched Eddie Royal, Justin Harper and Josh Morgan. There's also cornerback Brandon Flowers and linebacker Xavier Adibi (who, at 230, is smaller than the Dolphins' prototype at that position). So considering the Dolphins' interest in Virginia Tech prospects, I wanted to just highlight a few of these Hokies (ones not named Flowers or Adibi, as they're much more well-known). Chris Ellis Ellis, a DE, is a very interesting prospect, especially in the Dolphins' case.  At 6'4, 263, he's a almost a "poor man's" Chris Long.  He ran a 4.71 40 at the Combine, but improve...

"Twinkle-toes" Taylor to take stage again tonight
2008-03-24 22:01:00
Alright, I'll admit it.  Jason Taylor 's performance on Dancing With The Stars last week peeked my interest.  And it did so enough for me to actually watch his performances from here on out.   But that's not why I'm writing about dancing, of all things, on this site.  I really planned on not even bringing up the topic.  But then I stumbled upon a blog that Jason Taylor is doing for ESPN.  And that really caught my attention.  Specifically, the following excerpt: The dancing shoes also took some getting used to--they're thin, flimsy light things, with no support. My feet were killing me for that first week and a half. Then again, everything was killing me. Right now, I'm in, by far, the best shape I've been in in March in my career. Everyone's making this big thing about the off-season program and all that. But when I won Defensive Player Of the Year [in 2006], I made less than half of the workouts in the off-season. And last season, when I...

Weekend Roundup
2008-03-24 06:29:00
I hope everyone had a great weekend.  And I hope those who celebrate Easter also had a great holiday. Below is just some Dolphin nuggets that you may have missed over the weekend while you were busy enjoying whatever it is you did. FINS TO RUN A 3-4 Interesting nugget in a Yahoo! Sports article about our Dolphins and their plans for the defense: The Dolphins made it clear to several rookies interviewed at the NFL Scouting Combine that they will be predominately a 3-4 defense, so expect any draft picks to have plenty of experience in that scheme. That seems to rule out DT Glenn Dorsey, who isn't considered healthy enough or strong enough to occupy two bodies at the nose in the 3-4. Virginia's DE Chris Long is believed to be the frontrunner for Miami's top choice, not only because he's used to Parcells' methods via Cavaliers coach Al Groh--a Tuna disciple--but he has the smarts and measurables to play in any system. He would be the perfect successor on and off the field...

2008-03-22 08:12:00
It's Saturday, which means it's time for a video. This week, since it's Easter weekend and many people might not be around, I only got one video. It's of one of our new Dolphins. Keith Davis will be given a shot to start at safety this year, though I think it's unlikely. However, he's a terrific special teams player and a big hitter. Enjoy some of his hits in the video below: Barring any breaking Dolphins news, which isn't likely, I'll see you back here on Sunday night/Monday morning. Have a good weekend, all! And don't forget to cast your vote for the Jets' pick in our community mock draft, which is below.
