Weekend Roundup: Mini-Camp Thoughts
2008-06-09 06:15:00 Well the final mini-camp has come and gone. The Dolphins now have a couple of OTA practices left this week and then they hit the road for some vacation before training camp opens in July. So for today's "Weekend Roundup ," I figured I could just talk a little bit about what the media reported from these 5 mini-camp practices. QB TALKHere's all I'll say about the quarterbacks: It's impossible to really know who had a good day and who had a bad one. These camp reports are very subjective - meaning there's no real way to compare the performances of the 3 quarterbacks. Opinions and bias can easily influence writers to report that "quarterback X" had a good day while "quarterback Y" struggled. For example, it might be reported that John Beck threw a great pass to Davone Bess. Considering Bess's place on the depth chart, the reporter might say that John was working with the 3rd team. But that doesn't necessarily mean John was working against... More About: Thoughts , Mini , Camp
Video Time
2008-06-07 07:01:00 It's Saturday, which means it's time for another video. You'll remember that last week I posted the Monday Night Football intro from the season opener between Miami and Cleveland from back in 1992. Today I got the first Dolphins touchdown of that game, a classic Dan Marino to Mark Duper connection: Oh man do I miss those days! Anyways, I'll be posting the links to some of the mini-camp reports throughout the weekend. Then on Sunday night/Monday morning, I'll post some of my thoughts on the developments from this weekend's mini-camp. Have a good weekend, all!! More About: Video , Time
Around The AFC East: New York Jets
2008-06-06 17:13:00 For the final installment of this week's "Around the AFC East ," it's time to talk Jets . And for that, we turn to Brian Bassett of The Jets Blog: Matty I: As we inch towards training camp, what position (other than the QB competition) concerns you the most at this point in time? Brian B: Right Tackle. The team signed former Lion and Patriot Damien Woody to 5 year - $25 million deal. Woody lost his job at Guard last year but played well when they subbed him at Right Tackle after an injury. For the Jets in 2007, Anthony Clement let up more than nine sacks, so you'd hope that anything would be better than that, but it seems to be something that people are just glossing over and assuming the line will be excellent. My Take: That's exactly what I would have said as well. I think the Jets' offensive line will be improved, but Woody as a starting right tackle would worry me, too. However, I didn't realize Clement allowed that many sacks. Woody sh... More About: New York , York , New York Jets
Around the AFC East: New England Patriots
2008-06-06 14:30:00 Back with round two of this week's "Around the AFC East ." It's time to talk Patriots . And to do that is MaPataFan from Pats Pulpit: Matty I: I know I asked about the secondary last time, but two players in particular I have questions about. Rodney Harrison is entering the final year of his contract. What kind of contribution do you expect from him in '08 and do you think he'll be back beyond this season? Also, last year's 1st round pick, Brandon Meriweather, has been rumored to possibly switch from safety to corner. What do you expect his role to be this season and will be make the kind of impact that a former 1st round pick should make entering year #2? MaPatsFan: Harrison is 35 and, as you state, in the last year of his contract. Even though he's been a huge asset to the team (and sometimes distraction, re: HGH), Belichick would not renew his contract in a heartbeat if he wasn't making the grade. It's even questionable whether he... More About: England , New England Patriots , New England
Around the AFC East: Buffalo Bills
2008-06-06 06:15:00 It's Friday, so it's time to go around the AFC East . To kick things off today is Brian Galliford of Buffalo Rumblings: Matty I: You said that you knew it was coming, and here it is. What do you make of this Marshawn Lynch "potential hit and run" situation and how would the Bills cope with losing Lynch for any matter of games? And how big of a distraction is this right now for Lynch and the entire Bills organization? Brian G: It's difficult to discuss at this point because there's so little factual material surrounding the incident. Lynch still hasn't spoken with Buffalo police, who continue to investigate the situation. All I can say is this - the signs are pointing to Lynch being the driver, and if that turns out to be true, he could face up to a year in jail time (it's a misdemeanor crime). The football deities know that I hope I'm wrong on that speculation. All we get from team responses are the generic "no comment" and team media - so the re... More About: Buffalo Bills
Top 5 Miami Dolphins Moments of Past 15 Years
2008-06-05 06:16:00 So a couple of days ago I was watching the classic Dolphins /Jets game from 1994 on NFL Network and I got to thinking (which I try not to do too much). And what came from my thinking was deciding to take a break from all the recent Dolphins news and take a trip down memory lane. So today, I present to you all the top 5 moments (in-game moments, that is - not as in when the Dolphins drafted "X" player or traded for "X player) of the past 15 years, in my own personal opinion. And that's the fun of this. Some you might agree with. Some you probably won't. But it makes for a fun debate and is something to help past the time until this weekend's mini-camp, which the media is able to access (meaning we'll have some good reports on what is going on). So let's get into my top 5 moments of the past 15 years: Number 5: Dolphins vs Raiders, Week 2 2001 Some might be wondering why an early season game is up this high. Well the Raiders were coming off of a... More About: Miami Dolphins , Miami , Past , Years
Lehan gets good news, will only miss 4-6 weeks
2008-06-05 02:44:00 The Palm Beach Post provides us with some good news, courtesy of Michael Lehan's agent: Dolphins cornerback Michael Lehan will be out only four to six weeks, his agent told The Palm Beach Post. Based on the ugly way Lehan’s ankle was bent while he writhed on the turf, that’s incredibly good news for the secondary. Domann was traveling and said he didn’t have specifics on the injury. “To my knowledge, it doesn’t appear to be as severe as it must’ve looked,” Domann said. This is very good news, as it seemed Lehan, who was injured earlier today, had suffered a catastrophic injury. With a 4 to 6 week timetable, I'd imagine the injury is something like a high ankle sprain. But I suppose we'll find out more in the coming days. The bottom line, though, is that if Lehan is healthy in 4 to 6 weeks, he'd be ready for the beginning of training camp in late July. [UPDATE] The injury to Lehan is actually a dislocated right ankle. So if... More About: News , Good News , Miss , Good , Weeks
McCown looks sharp; Beck looks even better
2008-06-04 20:29:00 With today's OTA now complete, the media reports are slowly trickling in. And one of my favorite reports is from Omar Kelly. Omar tells us that the offense is beginning to kick into gear as more and more of the offense gets installed. And he tells us that both quarterbacks, Josh McCown and John Beck , looked sharp today. He also says that if he was forced to choose, he would "begrudgingly" say Beck looked best. Why "begrudgingly"? In my view, it's probably because Omar has been against Beck for some time now. He wanted the Dolphins to take Brady Quinn in 2007 and he was praying to god for Joe Flacco to fall to Miami back in April. He was also a big Cleo Lemon supporter. Omar has also come out and predicted that it will be McCown starting come opening day. Therefore, for him to admit that John Beck looked the best today, John must have really looked impressive. An excerpt of Omar's report is below: Basically, the offense was hu... More About: Sharp
Lehan hurt during OTA
2008-06-04 18:18:00 [Editor's Note by Matty I] Just to add to this, below is a quote from the Herald: All the noise left the Dolphins' ''organized team activity'' practice for several minutes Wednesday when cornerback Michael Lehan suffered what appeared to be a right knee or ankle injury bad enough that when he was helped off the field, Lehan held the leg at almost a 90-degree angle. It sure doesn't sound good at all, but we'll wait for official word before we panic too much. [end update] According to the Miami Herald , CB Michael Lehan was injured during today's OTA. Though the exact injury is unknown at the time, the Herald believes it to be a right knee or right ankle injury. The article says Lehan was clearly in a lot of pain and needed help to get off the field. Well this is clearly not good. CB depth is poor, in terms of talent and experience. If Lehan is out for an extended period the team will have to sign someone. This is an unfortunate loss. Hop... More About: Hurt

2008-06-04 06:16:00 So let's get away from the Jason Taylor talk a little bit and instead look at some other things that are going on. THIS WEEKEND'S MINICAMP TO GIVE US SOME CLUESEven though the Dolphins have been conducting OTAs, we really don't know too much about who is playing where. And that's because these OTAs have been closed to the media. That will change when the final minicamp begins on Friday. It will be 3 days and is indeed mandatory. And with the exception of Jason Taylor, the entire team will be there. But while we wait, there are some clues about where some players stand right now in terms of the early depth chart. And these clues come from a Barry Jackson article in the Miami Herald. Jackson reports that the remaining starting guard spot, the one opposite if Justin Smiley, currently is being filled with Ikechuku Ndukwe, according to rookie guard Shawn Murphy. It's important to note, too, that Murphy says Ndukwe is playing the left guard p... More About: Week
The Jason Taylor Saga: What's next?
2008-06-03 06:15:00 Trust me, I really don't want to talk about this any more than some of you do. However, I thought today's post wouldn't focus on who is right and who is wrong and how some of us fans may or may not be losing respect for Jason Taylor . Instead, let's talk about what eventually might happen here to rectify this situation so that we can all move on. Around the internet today, there are some interesting theories on what might occur. So let's talk a little bit about this ideas being thrown around. In his Monday Morning Quarterback column (the best NFL column around, in my opinion), SI's Peter King says that the only relevant piece of information to come out of Taylo's Sunday press conference was that Jason only plans on playing one more season. And King, like many, agrees that JT's declaration will only reduce the chance of him getting traded. After all, not many teams will give up what the Dolphins are looking for in return for a player who is only e... More About: Saga , Jason Taylor
Weekend Roundup: All Jason, All the Time
2008-06-02 06:15:00 I hope you all had a great weekend. Unfortunately, the weekend headlines were yet again dominated by non other than Jason Taylor. As you all know, Taylor held a press conference in South Florida on Sunday. And what was reportedly supposed to be Taylor's time to come clean and openly demand a trade turned into just another twist in the saga that is Jason Taylor's future plans. So let's start with some quotes from the Jason, which include the revelation that 2008 is likely Taylor's last season before he retires from the game of football: “I’m disappointed when you’re away and people are having a chance to take shots at you for certain things and you don’t have a chance to really set the record straight." “Do I want to be traded? I want to win in ‘08, and that’s what I want to do. I told the Dolphins from Day One that was my intentions. My intentions right now are to play one more year. I tried to give the Dolphins an opportun... More About: Time , Roundup , Weekend , The Time
Jason Taylor Press Conference: 11:30 am Sunday
2008-06-01 08:27:00 Well Sunday will be the day Jason Taylor finally goes public with his trade request. Just as "lancelolink" writes in this fanpost, Taylor will hold a press conference at 11:30 am on Sunday. And according to reports in the Miami Herald and the Sun-Sentinel, Taylor will publicly announce that he has indeed requested a trade to a contender. This shouldn't come as a shock to anyone. And it's great that Taylor will finally act mature about this and say exactly how he feels rather than hiding behind his agent and privately requesting a trade. But what if a trade doesn't happen because the Dolphins can't find a suitable partner offering what they perceive as fair value? According to the Herald, Taylor has a movie offer on the table: If he is forced to retire, Taylor has options. One is a movie offer that begins shooting in October. Taylor will pass on the offer if he's playing for another team. If not, he will seriously consider accepting the offer. And the $4... More About: Press , Press Conference

2008-05-31 07:01:00 After a nice short work week this past week, it's once again Saturday. And that means it's once again time for a video. Today I got one I think you'll all really like. It's the Monday Night Football intro back from 1992. This particular one is from week one of that '92 season in which the Dolphins opened up the season in Cleveland against the Browns. This intro features Dan Marino and Bernie Kosar. Two things to watch for in this video, and both are in regards to Kosar. First off, I never realized how much Bernie looks like actor Michael Rapaport. But more importantly, is Kosar doing his interview for the intro naked? If not, he's clearly shirtless for some ungodly reason. Anyways, enjoy: For the record, the Dolphins would indeed go on to win that game by the score of 27-23. Marino was 25 of 35 for 322 yards and one touchdown. And if you're all lucky, I'll get a video of that one touchdown pass up for n... More About: Video , Time
Report: Dolphins sign rookie Shawn Murphy
2008-05-30 19:22:00 [Editor's Note by Matty I] As I type this note, it's currently 4:30 pm EDT. And right now, there are no other reports of the Dolphins signing Murphy . So take the below KFFL report with a grain of salt and wait to hear further confirmation. And if anyone sees, hears, or reads a report that talks about Murphy potentially having his deal done with the Fins, please post it in the comments. [end note] [UPDATE 4:49 pm] The Miami Herald is now also reporting that the Dolphins have signed Murphy with an official announcement coming shortly. [end update] According to a report on KFFL.com, the Dolphins have signed rookie guard Shawn Murphy to a contract. The terms are unknown at this point. This isn't surprising, considering the Dolphins had 2 new roster spots cleared following the waiving of Tab Perry and the retirement of undrafted free agent Kory Robertson (which still hasn't been officially announced by the team). Murphy, a 4th round pick, is expected to ... More About: Report , Sign , Rookie
Around The AFC East: New York Jets
2008-05-30 19:15:00 It's time to conclude this week's edition of "Around the AFC East ." We end today by talking NY Jets football with Brian Bassett of The Jets Blog: Matty I: There's an old saying that says if you have many possible players at one position, you probably don't have any real players at that position. That's what came to my mind when the Jets added Jesse Chatman and Musa Smith in free agency this year to go along with Thomas Jones and Leon Washington. What are your thoughts on the Jets' current RB situation? How much of a disappointment was Jones' 3.6 ypc average last year and do you think he can bounce back? Brian Bassett: The Giants made it to the SuperBowl and went through Running Backs like water, so like linebacker, I'm of the mindset that it's one of those positions that can always use more depth. Even though the team has signed Chatman and Smith, I don't see the carries playing out that much differently in 2008 than they did in 2007. ... More About: New York , York , New York Jets
Around The AFC East: New England Patriots
2008-05-30 16:30:00 Back with the second part of this week's "Around the AFC East ." It's time to turn our attention to the Patriots . MaPatsFan from Pats Pulpit is here to help us out: Matty I: Much was made this off-season of New England losing Asante Samuel to free agency, and it's certainly a big loss. Then the Pats go out and sign Jason Webster and Fernando Bryant. What are your thoughts on those signings in particular? How confident are you in this secondary as it stands right now? MaPatsFan: I think Jason and Fernando are clearly "filler" until the rookies Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite come up-to-speed. My biggest concern with our linebackers and secondary was a) age (too old and too young) and b) departure of key individuals like Samuel. We needed some experience until the young guys started to produce at an NFL level. I think those concerns have been somewhat addressed with the guys you mentioned. Many have singled out the departure of ... More About: New England Patriots , New England
Around The AFC East: Buffalo Bills
2008-05-30 06:16:00 It's Friday, so it's time to again go "Around the AFC East ." Kicking us off today is Brian Galliford of Buffalo Rumblings: Matty I: As we inch our way closer to training camp, who is the Buffalo Bill that typical NFL fans might not be too familiar with that we should keep a close eye on in 2008? And conversely, who is the one player on the Bills that probably has gotten too much undeserved national attention? Brian Galliford: While "national attention" is something that Bills players rarely get, a couple of names do come to mind here. Keep your eye on RB Fred Jackson. Marshawn Lynch (deservedly) gets all of the love from the media, but the fact of the matter is that at no level has Lynch ever carried a full rushing load. If the Bills want to get the most out of their best offensive playmaker, they'll limit his rushing load a bit and get him more involved in the passing game (see: Tomlinson, L). If that happens - and many Bills fans hope it does - th... More About: Buffalo Bills
Quick Ronnie Brown injury update
2008-05-29 21:40:00 Over at the Hashmarks blog, they talk a little bit about the injuries of each team as we inch closer to training camp. Here's what they say about our very own Ronnie Brown : Rehab status: Brown underwent surgery to repair a torn anterior-cruciate ligament on Nov. 1. He is carrying the ball and changing direction effectively during the Dolphins' ongoing practices. The team is taking precautions to protect Brown from unnecessary contact. Next step: The Dolphins expect Brown to be ready for training camp. They are encouraged by his progress so far, but it's still early. Only seven months have passed since Brown underwent surgery. This basically gels with everything else we've been hearing. I guess it's good news that Ronnie hasn't suffered any setbacks yet now that he is cutting and changing direction in non-contact drills. But like Mike Sando writes in the blog, it's still early. The real test will be how he holds up in contact drills and, more importan... More About: Injury , Update , Quick
Talking Matt Roth and Jason Allen
2008-05-29 06:15:00 Yesterday we talked a little bit about Channing Crowder and how 2008 is a critical season for him. Well as Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald points out, '08 is a pivotal season for two more young defensive players who were supposed to be key contributors to this unit for years to come. The first is Matt Roth . Entering his 4th season, Roth has a lot to prove if he wants to remain a starter. In fact, some believe he could not just lose his starting job, but might also lose his roster spot if he doesn't prove his worth early to this new regime. After 3 seasons, Roth only has 7.5 sacks and 8 tackles for loss. Now Roth will be battling rookies Phillip Merling and Kendall Langford as well as free agent acquisition Randy Starks and 3rd year vet Rod Wright. So the competition is certainly stiff, and with his contract up after '09, he's certainly not a player who can afford to struggle early on in camp this year. Good news: Roth has bulked up fro... Obligatory Jason Taylor Update #2
2008-05-29 02:59:00 This is getting very old and tiresome. However, it's also getting more interesting. Earlier today after playing in the charity golf event in Iowa, Jason Taylor had some interesting words for the Associated Press. He said: "I'm under contract with the Dolphins. So again, I'm looking forward to playing some golf." "Football doesn't start until July and training camp, so I'll be all right. I've been in L.A. and so far removed from it. Like I said, 'I'll deal with that when I get there." This report in the Sun-Sentinel also says that a meeting was supposedly planned between Taylor and the Dolphins sometime after this tournament. But the Dolphins apparently canceled this meeting. Rotoworld reports that Taylor is scheduled to meet with the media in Miami on Sunday, likely in regards to his charity golf event down in South Florida, of which the Dolphins are partners in. The only thing I got to say is that Taylor's choice of words are kind of questionable... More About: Update , Jason Taylor
Tab Perry waived/injured
2008-05-29 00:38:00 [Editor's Note by Matty I] This was originally posted as a fanshot. I've edited it for front-page posting. Also, here's the link to the info on MD.com. [end note] Check this out just on Rotoworld: Dolphins waived/injured WR Tab Perry . Perry, 26, tore his Achilles' tendon last weekend, unbeknownst to the Miami media. It's a crippling injury and one that threatens to end his career. Perry has always had intriguing skills for offense and special teams, but has been one of the most injury plagued players in the league since 2005. Things just got a bit easier for Devone Bess from Hawaii. Definitely looks like a very young core of Wide receivers. More About: Injured
Obligatory Jason Taylor Update
2008-05-28 21:25:00 No, there's nothing new here to talk about. But there are some more confirmations on teams that are not interested in trading for Jason Taylor . First, John Clayton writes in his blog that the Chargers are indeed not interested, seconding what we originally heard late last week: If you had any questions about the Chargers' interest in Jason Taylor , scratch them from your thoughts immediately. The Chargers aren't interested in trading for Taylor, according to a source. With Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips as the team's main outside linebackers, the Chargers aren't looking for a starting outside linebacker. Plus, they are already down a second-round choice in 2009 from a draft-day trade. The Dolphins still haven't had an offer better than a fourth-rounder for the former NFL defensive MVP. Meanwhile, the Ravens were another team being floated out there in connection with Taylor. You'll remember that last week, a Baltimore radio station reported the Dolphins and R... More About: Update
One roster spot cleared: Robertson retires
2008-05-28 17:45:00 Remember a couple of days ago when we all pondered who would be cut to make room for the 4 remaining unsigned draft picks? Well the Dolphins have cleared one of the needed roster spots, at least according to the Palm Beach Post. They are reporting that undrafted free agent Kory Robertson will be placed on injured reserve, ending his rookie season before it even starts. The injury is unknown at this point, but Robertson was thought to be in a position to earn a spot on the 53 man roster because of his size (6'4, 345). Now, though, this might actually benefit Paul Soliai, as he has one less body to compete with as a backup nose tackle. This move might also mean that one of the unsigned rookies could be signed in the near future. We shall find out soon enough. [UPDATE] The Palm Beach Post has updated this story. Apparently, Robertson isn't being placed on the IR. Instead, he's decided football isn't what he wants to do and he has announced ... More About: Spot , Roster
'08 is key season for Crowder
2008-05-28 06:15:00 In his terrific "Florida Sports Buzz" article for the Miami Herald, Barry Jackson brought up interesting points on Sunday about three young Dolphin defenders who will really be under the gun in 2008. So I'm going to take them one-by-one and talk a little bit about what they need to do to stick with the team in 2008 and beyond. Today we'll talk a little bit about one of my favorite players, Channing Crowder. Crowder is perhaps the player with the most to gain (or to lose) in 2008. He is entering his 4th year since being drafted in round 3 by Nick Saban back in 2005 and has shown flashes but hasn't taken that proverbial "next step" that he needs to take to become the heir apparent to Zach Thomas. And now Crowder enters this season with free agency looming in 2009. Writes Barry Jackson: Word is this Dolphins regime likes Crowder -- he fits their linebacker prototype (athletic, 6-2, 245 pounds). But he can become an unrestricted free agent next spring, ... Will Allen being investigated by NFL
2008-05-28 05:22:00 We all remember the story that came out a couple of weeks ago about Will Allen 's trouble with the law. If not, read about it here. Well it seems Allen could be in more trouble that initially thought. The Palm Beach Post is reporting that the NFL has been investigating Allen for some time now. Apparently, a Detroit bank alerted the NFL when a large sum of money was wired to South Florida. The problem is, right now, that nobody is saying anything. NFL spokesperson Greg Aiello had no comment, saying just that "the matter continues to be under review." Meanwhile the Dolphins have no comment, nor does Allen's agent, Drew Rosenhaus. This could be a problem for the Dolphins. The league's gambling policy is very strict and, as Tim Graham of the Post writes, "if the allegations against Will Allen prove true this summer, the Dolphins might have a different starting cornerback for at least part of 2008." This is a tricky situation for the team, and making...
Early difference between Cam Cameron and Tony Sparano
2008-05-28 02:56:00 As much as I usually dislike Armando Salguero because he often times comes off as somebody who has a very high opinion of himself, he does sometimes give out good information. And in his latest chat, which can be found here, he was asked about his impression of Tony Sparano thus far compared to Cam Cameron . Here's how he responded: I wrote about Sparano at the last minicamp and my impression of him was that he is a direct, no-nonsense kind of guy. He is kind of rough around the edges, to be frank with you. He does get to the point, however, and that's a contrast to Cam Cameron . Cameron believed himself smarter than everyone and thought he could outsmart everyone. He could not. Another thing: When Sparano said he was going to answer the Taylor issues just once, I compared it to the time Cameron was faced with Daunte Culpepper questions. The difference was that Sparano held his authority a lot better than Cam. Sparano said he'd answer the question once and only two oth... More About: Early , Difference
Four must be cut...but who?
2008-05-27 06:15:00 I hope everybody had a fun, as well as safe, Memorial Day weekend. Yesterday I quickly mentioned how the Dolphins must cut 4 players. The limit for players on a roster at one time during the off-season is 80. The Dolphins currently have 84 players. They can get away with this because 4 of them are rookies who haven't signed. That means the Dolphins must cut 1 player before signing another rookie. And like I said, 4 in all must be cut to make room for these still unsigned rookies (Phillip Merling, Chad Henne, Kendall Langford, and Shawn Murphy). But who will these next cuts be? Like I said, the current roster is at 84 players, which includes the 4 remaining unsigned rookies. By position, the roster breaks down like this: Quarterbacks - 3Running backs - 7 (2 are fullbacks and one is a tweener)Wide receivers - 10Tight ends - 6Offensive lineman - 14Defensive lineman - 14Linebackers - 11Cornerbacks - 8Safeties - 6Kickers - 3Punter - 1Long Snappe...

2008-05-26 06:15:00 I hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend this Memorial Day. While I'm sure most of you are outside enjoying the holiday, here's what you may have missed the past couple of days: JASON TAYLOR RUMORS ABOUNDJust a few days have passed since Tony Sparano told the world that Jason Taylor has no intentions of reporting to Miami for any OTAs, mini-camps, or even training camp and already the rumors are flying. Over the weekend, there were already as many as 3 teams linked to Taylor, though each comes with a denial from local sources. A Baltimore radio station reported that the Ravens and Dolphins were talking about a trade for Taylor, but a "well-placed NFL source" told the Palm Beach Post that it isn't likely. In fact, GM Ozzie Newsome wasn't even in town this weekend. One of the first teams possibly linked to Taylor were the Chargers. Adam Schefter named them a possible destination on NFL Total Access last week. However, the San Diego Union-Tribune... More About: Roundup , Weekend
