( Sunday) April 27th was the big day of our hiking day trip to Balsam Mountain, it had rained earlier in the morning and it looked like it would be gray skies all day. I was so psyched for this trip, and the entire time all I could think about was the weather, hoping that when the day came, that the weather would cooperate with us. It had rained earlier in the morning and I was praying the entire time that the skies would clear. I got going and started preparing sandwiches to pack with us for the trip and got the necessary gear that we were going to take with us for the day. I packed all kinds of snacks, sandwiches and beverages into our backpacks, figuring that we would work up a pretty good appetite during and after the hike. See who's visiting the Catskill mountain FYI blog, Our guest bloggerYesterday the temperature warmed up to 82 degrees, it was the perfect day for an outing. We managed to do two reviews, one was a small deli here in Jeffersonville,NY. The other was at an Ice cream stand,reviews should be posted by Monday. Today the sun was shining brightly and it was quite windy, perfect conditions for getting out the kites, just finding the right location was the only thing we had to worry about other than hoping that the strong winds didn't die down by the time we arrived at our destination. Ok so we found the right place, we decided to take our kites out into a parking lot of one of our local schools, the perfect place, if I do say so to fly kites. We originally had planned on finding a large field over by a farm, but decided not to only because the ground is still pretty soggy, you know those leftover conditions that the winter had brought us , and we didn't have to worry much about steppi...

Stepping back into the history of the Original Woodstock Music Festival

Located here in Bethel NY Sullivan County, Today with the sun shining brightly,the sky was a pale shade of blue with big white fluffy clouds, up in the distance, I could hear the birds chirping gleefully, almost creating melodic tunes. It just reminded me of how lucky I am to live a county full of such history and beauty. , I reflected back into history today by taking a short jaunt to the original 1969 Woodstock site. History was made in Bethel, N.Y right here in Sullivan County.. The original Woodstock Concert Festival of 1969 was held only a couple of miles from my home. There was a bit of controversy where the location of the concert was going to be held originally during the decision making process at the very beginning. Early Spring Walk near the Callicoon Creek in Kenoza lake, NY Today spring was in full bloom, it topped out at 60+ degrees and it was a clear sunny day. We decided to take a short jaunt down to the Historic Stone Arch Bridge located in Kenoza lake, N.Y , not far from where we live. This Historic Bridge crosses over the Callicoon Creek and was constructed by German and Swiss Stonemasons sometime in the early 1880's, it is considered to be one of Sullivan County 's most famous structures on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the few hex murders on record was committed here in Sullivan County on the bridge in 1882 . As the story goes, a hex was placed on Adam Heidt which had caused him suffering and pain through most of his life, to end his agony and suffering, A Man Named Joseph decided to murder George Markert, the man that was claimed to have put the curse on Adam. . Here is a list of some of the things I take with me Camping : Tents- I actually have 2, the bigger one and a smaller one in case guests want to camp with us. Lanterns-Either propane,battery operated , solar powered ,or oil filled.I have 2 gas powered ones and just last year I went out and purchased a solar powered one, the solar powered one even comes with an ac adapter as well as a car charger for powering up the lantern again to its maximum potential. Sleeping bags- they come in a variety of sizes as well as offering different levels of warmth and protection, I have a queen sized sleeping bag , its lined with soft flannel and is really warm. Coolers-a must have, you have to keep your food refrigerated especially in the warmer months, or the food will spoil. I have several different sized coolers, a 70 quart one and some smaller ones. Air Mattress/sleeping cot-again a large variety depending of the level of comfort your looking for. personally I like the inflatable air mattres...

Camping in the Catskill Mountain s There is nothing like getting in touch with nature and enjoying the splendor that nature has to offer, thats why I love camping. Camping comes in many forms, there are those who love to really love to rough it, those are the people who can camp just about anywhere , in any weather, with nothing but a sleeping bag , a small pup tent and some food. Then we have the people who's version of camping is taking their pull along trailers or motor home on wheels and find a nice campsite with all the necessary hookups for their Rv's, what a way to camp!, with all the conveniences of home. As for me, I think I fall somewhere between the middle. I kind of enjoy the pitching the tent thing, yet I like to bring along some of the conveniences of home along with me, but two things that I absolutely have to have is a campsite with an electric outlet and available showers. Our Balsam Mountain Lake day hike update: us hiking in the Catskill mountains. I just wanted to share this information with you, our Balsam Mountain day hike round trip distance is going to be 4.3 miles( 6.9 km ). The elevation climb is 1190 ft ( 363m ), the summit elevation is 3720 ft ( 1134m ). The difficulty level is moderate. Basic info: A loop over the Westernmost of the Catskill high peaks, those over 3500 ft, to a renovated fire tower offering views of the Southern Catskills. Fine views East to several high peaks open up on the descent , and Dry Brook Ridge Trail offers views down the steep mountainside to Black Brook Valley. Entrance to the area: From New York Rte 17 (Quickway),exit 96 off the Livingston Manor exit, take the first 2 right turns.Go 0.3 miles, then make a right turn just past Kings Catering House.
