Thoughts on Vikings – Lions by Bill Simmons
2009-09-18 17:26:00
LIONS (+9.5) over Vikings Has Brad Childress ever given an interview in which it didn't look like he should be staring through penitentiary glass holding a black phone? (Wait a second, did I just pick the Lions ? That was an accident. Hold on.) Vikings (-9.5) over LIONS Much better. I have two Adrian Peterson thoughts. First, he combines my favorite single qualities of five different great running backs: Walter Payton (the move where he breaks a tackle, then stiff-arms a tackler coming from behind to buy a second while getting his legs churning again); Barry Sanders (the part where he's so electric that it's just not worth betting heavily against his team because he can singlehandedly break you); Eric Dickerson (the way he cruises through a hole and you wait for him to kick it into another gear for a split second before realizing he's running away from everyone already); Emmitt Smith (a nasty edge that can only be described as "Look, there's no way we're losing this game and th...

OJ Mayo vs. Miller The Final Review
2009-08-09 04:39:00
Not to beat a dead horse since the Wolves have finally dumped one of the worst GM's in history, but lets take a final look at the flawed theory that trading away OJ Mayo and replacing him with Mike Miller 's outside game so we could get Kevin Love could make any sense at all. As you know the Gold Seat has never been a fan of McHale's moves and the OJ Mayo trade is a great example.  When Mike Miller was brought it the pundits (the professor) said, "oh, it will work, he's a great outside threat".  A quick examination of the numbers would prove otherwise. Right from the start we can see OJ Mayo is the superior player.  If you're looking for offensive threat which was the premise in bringing Miller in, than OJ delivers double the points per game. But this is the one that really hurts.  OJ is the more prolific 3PT shooter.  It just hurts. And to add insult to injury, Mayo's a lot cheaper.  Looking back now it's obvious trading Mayo was the wrong thing to do.  Luckily for ...

Rubio Pick Now Becoming More Clear
2009-06-26 21:41:00
When the Timberwolves drafted 4 PG's in the 2009 NBA Draft they had basketball fans worldwide scratching their heads.  One day later the moves are starting to make a little more sense. In today's economy it is no secret the most valuable players in NBA are one's with expiring or low contracts.  Twelve teams have received loans from the NBA front office.  Watching the NBA draft you'd think every team was trying to sell their pick for dead beat expiring players or cash (two did, LA and WAS). It is this environment that MN found itself with 4 picks in the first round of what many experts were calling the worst draft class since Kenyon Martin's #1 overall 2000 draft.  Direct from wikipedia: Sports Illustrated named this entire draft class (as opposed to individual players) the 6th biggest "draft bust" of the modern era - making it the only draft class among the site's top 20 list. Just before the 2009 draft, ESPN.com columnist David Schoenfield wrote a piece in which he rated ...

In the NFL record books you'll find one interesting WR record - Torry Holt along with Marvin Harrison are the only receivers with multiple 1,600 yard receiving seasons.  It just happens both players are now free agents having been cut by their respective teams.  With the Vikings looking to add threats that compliment AD, let's take a look at the numbers. Harrison enters his 14th year in the league, the last two saw Marvin play a total of 20 games and collect 80 receptions for about 900 yards with 6 TD's. Torry "Big Game" Holt enters his 11th season having played all but 2 games in his career.  Holt has been a model of consistancy generating 80-100 receptions each year and at least 1,000 yds.  Never a big TD guy only grabbing 10 or more in 3 seasons, Holt instead generates consistant deep routes and possession receptions while averaging about 12-14/yds per catch. It's easy to see how both players could add a new element to the Vikings attack, but Holt is by far and large the ...

The Minnesota Vikings Draft Needs
2009-02-19 04:54:00
The pink elephant in the room is QB.  What will the Vikings do at QB?  In today’s NFL you have a short window to be great, then a window to rebuild so you can have a short window to be great again. All Day isn’t getting younger.  With LT’s latest woes it’s safe to say an RB has 3-8 great years in him.  With a run heavy offense and an all around superior, but aging D, the Vikings window in now 2…maybe 3 years. Let’s not forget going into last year and the year before expectations were high with the Vikings and they failed to deliver.  To this point the team has underperformed in a very weak NFC North Division. With the league’s #1 rusher you can only blame the offensive play caller or the quarterback to why the offense shuts down in big games (and little one’s, ie. Detroit twice when most teams where winning by 20). I can’t reiterate the play calling failures enough when you consider having the #1 rusher.  The rusher makes the passer better.  When teams put 8...

Williams Wall Has Yet to Crumble, Yet
2008-12-06 01:30:00
Another day in the StarCaps drama brings us a little closer to the end. Today with the courts getting invovled it is looking a little more promising for the players to play this weekend, but probably not beyond that. It seems as though there are three main issues at hand. According to an article from ESPN, via the Associated Press (see link below) http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story? id=3747957 the result of the case will boil down to three main points that the judge will consider. The first, coming from the players side and like we talked about yesterday, is that they were not fairly warned by the NFL that the StarCaps pills contained the banned diuretic Bumetanide. According to the NFLPA league officials knew that StarCaps contained the banned substance but withheld this information from players. In addition, the label on the bottle never mentioned it contained the banned substance. The other point that we can take from the AP article is that the NFL says the burden is co...

Add it to the list, maybe
2008-12-04 22:41:00
A common theme amongst Minnesota sports fans is having things begin to go our way and then having the proverbial "rug" being pulled out from underneath us. Well, we can add the Vikes to the list for 2008. I know, I know, all cities and states have their relative issues with sports teams such as Seattle this year and maybe Jacksonville with the Jags, or even San Antonio and the Spiz-urs, just to name a few. However, these teams have other things or recent success to fall back on. For example, the Seahawks, even though they are having a down year, (a really down year) have been to a Super Bowl and/or NFC Championship in the last five years. They may not have won but they still made it and gave the city some hope and generated some genuine excitement. Watch, this year they are on pace to get a top five pick and will be back better than ever after drafting Michael Crabtree and housing teams for size in their division (just my humble opinion from looking at it from the outside). I digre...

From the MPLS/St. Paul Business Journal: Target Corp. has signed on as the naming-rights sponsor for the new Minnesota Twins ballpark, which will be named Target Field . Under the 25-year deal, the plaza area between Target Center and Target Field will be called Target Plaza. “We are excited about our partnership with the Minnesota Twins and the opportunity to continue our long history of community support,” Target President and CEO Gregg Steinhafel said in a statement. “We are confident that Twins fans and community residents will enjoy this wonderful addition to our area for many years to come.” In addition to the naming rights for the ballpark and plaza, Target also will receive extensive marketing and promotional opportunities. Kobe is not MJ
2008-06-03 17:16:00
Let’s stop all of these comparisons.  It is not doing anyone any good and those who dare to make the leap (yes I said leap) to put Kobe at Jordan’s level is nothing short of asinine. I’m not trying to make the case that Kobe isn’t a great player.  He is a great and very dominent player in the NBA.  He is not however Jordan. Check out some of the career stats for both Kobe and Jordan Kobe Career Points/Game - 28.3 FG% - .453 Minutes - 36.5 FT% - .839 3 Point % - .34 Rebounds/Game - 5.3 Assists/Game - 4.6 Steals/Game - 1.5 Free Throws/Game - 7.7 Jordan Career Points/Game - 30.1 FG% - .497  (almost 50% for a career and he eclipsed 50% for 4 straight years) Minutes - 38.3 FT% - .835 3 Point % - .327 Rebounds/Game - 6.2 Assists/Game - 5.3 Steals/Game - 2.35 Free Throws/Game - 8.2 Even if I could look past the statistical matchup between the two players where Jordan is better in all but 3 point percentage, there are still many intangible...

Jared Allen what? Doesn’t anyone care that the Gophers got new uni’s?
2008-04-25 22:02:00
I know that the NFL draft is tomorrow and I didn’t really break it down like I did last year. Well, I guess that’s because second round projections aren’t that interesting. Here are my two scenarios: 1) Vikings trade down to the late second or early third round to get an additional 4th round pick. They then use their first two picks on the offensive line (tackle, center, guard or tight end) or wide receiver. 2) Vikings keep the 47th overall pick and take Fred Davis from USC. Shane Co. was a huge bust last year and we really need a TE that can run the seam route to keep the opposing safeties honest covering Berrian and Rice. Ok, now that the draft speculation is out of the way - the Gophers got new uniforms! Believe it or not, Gopher Football is about to be relevant in the next year or two for the first time in my 28 years on this planet. They are building a new on-campus stadium, which will attract not only a huge contingent of fans; and also better player...

LA Developer Unveils New Stadium With Purple Seats

The Trib is reporting that LA Developer Ed Roski announced plans today to build a $800 million dollar NFL stadium on land he already owns near Los Angeles.  Roski said the stadium could be completed by 2011, the same year the Minnesota Vikings lease expires with the Metrodome. Could we see Adrian Peterson rushing his way to NFL title’s with the LA Vikings?  LA already took the Lakers from MN, are the Vikings next?  The San Diego Chargers would also be an attractive team to move since the ‘ol Jack Murphy Stadium is dying quickly. http://www.losangelesfootballstadium.com/   http://www.losangelesfootballstadium.com/ images

Coin Flip for Second Slot in Lottery?
2008-04-10 18:33:00
Ok, with 4 games remaining the Timberwolves are currently slotted in the 3rd best position in the draft lottery, which would give them a 15.6% chance of landing the #1 overall pick.  However, at 19-59 the Timberwolves are only one game in the win column ahead of the Seattle Supersonics (18-61).  This means that to catch Seattle the Supersonics will have to win one more game than the Timberwolves the rest of the way.  Complicating matters is that Seattle has three games left and the Timberwolves have four.  On first blush it would appear that we have no chance in this equation.  Seattle’s three remaining games are against solid Western Conference opponents (San Antonio, Dallas and Golden State).  However, here is the scenario by which we could catch Seattle.  The Timberwolves have 4 remaining games, the next 3 of them on the road.  I predict that we will lose out.  We play Orlando, Memphis and Detroit on the road in the next week or so, and will lose all three.  T...

Minnesota Wild 2008 Playoff Predictions
2008-04-07 19:22:00
After clinching the Northwest division with 98 points the MN Wild will open the 2008 playoffs as the #3 seed. The Wild will face off against a familiar rival the #5 seeded Colorado Avalanche. After breaking down the the other 3 Western Conf. matchups I will make this prediction - The Wild will play in the Conference Finals. Here’s how: The playoffs are re-seeded after each round. If everything follows the chalk then the Wild would face the #2 seed San Jose Sharks. But the Sharks are the playing a feisty Calgary team that went 3-1 this year against the Sharks. I’m not saying this will hold up in the playoffs but it does show the Sharks have struggled with the Flames. The real reason I think the Flames with upset the Sharks is the schedule. The NHL has scheduled the opening two games to be played Wed & Thurs. back to back. I believe this will only help with the momentum one of the team creates in game one as they will play again without a practice or much time...

The Gomez Mauer Cuddyer Effect
2008-04-01 06:40:00
It’s way too early to be making predictions based on the season opener but if Gomez continues to hit in front of Mauer and gets on base…I could see Mauer adding 20 points to his batting average or drawing more walks this season. With opposing pitchers worrying about the steal, the SS covering the steal and 1B holding on the runner Mauer should see better pitches, bigger gaps or a lot more walks. If Gomez does steal and Mauer moves him over to 3rd with that patented miss hit dribble to 2nd then Cuddyer or Morneau could be adding another 20 RBI this year. Please Gomez, be the second coming of Kenny Lofton 1992-1998. Can he hit .380 this year?

NFL: High Picks = Top Performers??
2008-03-28 19:16:00
This year the Minnesota Vikings will have the 17th overall selection in the NFL Draft.  Midway through last season it looked like we were a lock to land a top 5 pick.  Then Adrian Peterson realized that he was one of the 3 most explosive, game-changing players in the league and all hell broke loose.  The worst case scenario in the NFL is to narrowly miss the playoffs; in this scenario you not only miss out on the postseason, you also get a lousy draft pick. Unlike sports like hockey and baseball, it definitely pays to tank in the NFL; there’s not even a lottery..  Although the Vikings did pay bigtime for their winning ways the last half of the season in the way of draft order, the way they will not pay is by having to invest in upwards of $30 million guaranteed dollars in what likely will amount to a bust player from college.  With the 2008 NFL Draft closely at hand (relatively speaking), I for one am glad that our Vikings don’t have the responsibility of picking ...

Minnesota Twins 2008 Predictions:
2008-03-25 17:37:00
Ok, with Denard Span being sent down to AAA and Joe Nathan being inked to a 4 year, $47 M payday, the Minnesota Twins opening day roster is rounding into shape.  Here are my predictions for the upcoming season.  The opening day lineup will look like this: 1. Carlos Gomez, CF 2. Joe Mauer, C 3. Michael Cuddyer, RF 4. Justin Morneau, 1B 5. Delmon Young, LF 6. Craig Monroe/Jason Kubel, DH 7. Brendan Harris, 2B 8. Mike Lamb, 3B 9. Adam Everett, SS The best case scenario is that Carlos Gomez becomes Jose Reyes, Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau play like they did in 2006, Delmon Young plays like Torii Hunter did last year, and the 7,8,9 spots can get at least 3 combined hits a game.  Worst case scenario is that Carlos Gomez bats .232 like he last year with the Mets, Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau play like they did in 2007, Delmon Young is still a couple years away from being a superstar, Craig Monroe remembers that he is old and Jason Kubel continues to deliver nothing on the hype that I ...

He wanted to be a dunking Kirby Puckett
2008-03-19 22:00:00
Potentially one of the best articles written on Kevin Garnett and why Glen Taylor continues to fail him. From Yahoo sports writer Johnny Ludden- HOUSTON – Kevin Garnett leaned over the scorer’s table, clapped his hands together and out burst that familiar cloud of chalk. As the dust settled into the air, Garnett turned to walk onto the court. The fierceness in his eyes told everyone all they needed to know. The streak was done. Garnett makes the same entrance every night, and Tuesday was no different. He pounded his heart three times with his right fist then pounded the Houston Rockets. His Boston Celtics would leave with a 94-74 victory, again solidifying their standing as this season’s most dominant team, and when Garnett was asked whether it felt special to hand the Rockets their first loss after 22 games and 49 days, he had this to say: “No.” Garnett doesn’t need to use the NBA’s second-longest win streak as fuel. He carries the same slow-burning fire to the court...

Great Moments in Minnesota Twins History

Following the 1960 season the Washington Senators moved to the Twin Cities and became the Minnesota Twins . Since becoming the Twins they have had their share of memorable moments. Here is a list of the ten greatest moments in Twins history.  April 11, 1961. The Minnesota Twins defeat the New York Yankees 6-0 in their first game as the Twins for their first win. Pedro Ramos pitches a complete game shut out for the win. Bobby Allison and Reno Bertoia hit home runs.  September 26, 1965. The Twins defeat the Washington Senators 2-1 to clinch the American League Pennant. Jim Kaat pitches a complete game shutout, striking out ten batters. September 22, 1969. The Minnesota Twins win the American League Western Division title when they defeat the Kansas City Royals 4-3. Bob Miller is the winning pitcher and Harmon Killerbrew hits his 47th home run. September 23, 1970. The Minnesota Twins win their second consecutive division title when they defeat the Oakland A’s 7-4. Tom Hall is ...
