2008-05-18 06:46:00 With all that has been happening of late, I haven't had a chance to pass on the news of the return of the Pittsburgh Pirates Round Table . Once again I am offering my opinion on the topics, there have been two editions so far this season. 2008-05-14 23:36:00 JVB was sent back to Indy...Doumit fractures his finger...The Pirates are 19-20...Which is the most surprising?JVB does not surprise me in the slightest. The few times I have seen him pitch have left me uninspired. I have said it in the past, and I will say it again. Until JVB learns to pitch, he will never be more thaan a AAAA star. JVB does not change speeds at all. He relies on an average at best 92 mph fastball, at times he falls in love with it. After going thru a batting order once, batters get the timing down on him. Relief or a switch to a position are his only hopes of staying in Pittsburgh.Doumit with a freak injury? No surprise. If Doumit was on 'Deal or No Deal', he would walk out with a penny. Jason Michaels a Pirate, Morgan Demoted
2008-05-08 23:33:00 Today, the Pirate s acquired outfielder Jason Michaels and cash from the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later. Nyjer Morgan was demoted to AAA Indianapolis to make room on the 25 man roster. BTW Take: Wow. Michaels was a fan favorite in Cleveland, his release seemed to be a knee jerk reaction by Cleveland in an attempt to jump start their offense. Michaels is a corner outfielder, who will be a helpful bat from the bench. I would not classify him as a defensive replacement, but he is a good utility or 4th outfielder. He he, 4th outfielder. 2008-05-04 17:27:00 Evan Meek was designated for assignment this morning to make room for the recall of Sean Burnett . Burnett has been excellent for Indy out of the pen posting a 0.98 ERA in 12 appearances over 17 1/3 innings. BTW Take: Well, it is a day early to make me look like a mastermind. I did call for a move last week to send Meek back. In the return of the Pittsburgh Pirates Round Table (should be up in the next day or so), I actually called this move a couple days ago. This move makes perfect sense. Meek, while touted for a 97 MPH fastball, discovered if he throws it 89-92 he can control it better. Only problem is, he is still wild but with a league average fastball. In his most recent outing, he never topped 92 on the radar gun while being wildly erratic to the point of being unexplainably effective. Over the last 2 outings he threw twice as many balls as strike but escaped due to the double play and anxious hitters chasing balls ... More About: Recalled

A Few Things I Have Noticed
2008-04-30 23:10:00 When Van Benschoten started changing speeds and throwing something other than a 90-92 MPH fastball, he started getting outs. Unfortunately today it took him 17 pitches to throw something other than a fastball. Once he started throwing the curve, he started looking like the pitcher we keep hearing about. Last night in the 11th inning, he threw mostly fastballs and allowed the winning run. JVB needs to learn to change speeds and mix his pitches better. he has been throwing, not pitching. Hopefully JVB will get word of this, or maybe Jeff Andrews needs to smack him with a fungo bat, hopefully it will sink in then. Paulino and Bautista need to get a clue. Neither one understands situational hitting. In the 11 inning loss last night to the Mets, both players, back to back, swung at first pitches when the pitcher they were facing was having control issues and the bases were loaded. Some minor additions have been added, including AP articles and AP video feeds found below the post section...For those days where I don't get to post, I am still looking for that billionaire to gift me a couple million dollars. I have also added a Smapp applet that shows the seasons schedule, game stats, links to the ESPN box score (click on the game) as well as an Google maps view of the stadium. The standings and full MLB schedule are still available below the AP feeds. Rotoworld feed and BallHype feed are also available in the right menu bar near the bottom.
