Nick Diaz: MMA's Pro Weed Warrior - 09 Nov 2007 05:30:49pm
2007-11-09 18:30:00 By Ralph Gonzalez It was a brilliant performance by Stockton, California?s Nick Diaz (15-6) as he routed the highly regarded Japanese MMA star Takanori Gomi at Pride 33 in February. The huge upset would send notice to the Mixed Martial Arts community that Diaz was back in a big way. Unfortunately for the (Cesar Gracie) Jiu-Jitsu black belt and professional boxer, the win would later be declared a no-contest by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after their tests revealed a high level of marijuana in his system. ?I feel it was done out of ignorance. The win was taken away from me because I smoke weed and that?s stupid,? said the 24-year old Diaz. ?I?m a fighter and a martial artist. I feel martial artists and all artists in general could benefit from smoking weed and we should be able to smoke it all we want.? Diaz has proven himself in the past by impressively knocking out Robbie Lawler and most recently besting Josh Neer, Mike Aina and the aforementioned Gomi. ?I already kn... Doug Evans vs Mark Bocek UFC 79 - 09 Nov 2007 03:20:17am
2007-11-09 04:20:00 By Damon Martin The undercard for Ultimate Fighting Championship 79 ? featuring a main event of Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes for the welterweight title ? is starting to fill out as MMAWeekly has confirmed that Alaskan fighter Doug Evans will return to the Octagon to face grappler Mark Bocek in a lightweight bout. In his UFC debut, Evans impressed many people with his performance against Roger Huerta. Although he lost the bout, he controlled Huerta for virtually the entire first round before the Texan rebounded in the second session. Now Evans, who was originally asked to fight Jorge Gurgel at UFC 77 but had to bow out due to an injury, returns to face another fighter currently sporting a 0-1 record in the UFC in Mark Bocek. Bocek made his debut at UFC 73 and faced top lightweight contender Frankie Edgar. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter succumbed to Edgar in the first round, but looks for redemption against Evans. UFC 79 takes place on Dec. 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in...

EliteXC makes bad gamble with Kimbo Slice
2007-11-09 04:10:00 By Todd Martin Saturday night, Kevin "Kimbo Slice " Ferguson makes his EliteXC debut. Slice signed a multiyear contract with EXC in the past month and since then has been heavily promoted by the organization. Why is Slice the most heavily promoted fighter on EXC's upcoming card? He doesn't have an amateur wrestling pedigree. He isn't an accomplished jiu jitsu practitioner. He isn't a Muay Thai standout. In fact, he has only one sanctioned fight, and that was an exhibition against 46-year-old boxer Ray Mercer. Slice isn't being promoted for any of those reasons. Rather, EXC is hoping to capitalize on his fame as an underground street fighter. This is a mistake. EXC's promotional philosophy is a sound one. It realizes better than most of UFC's competitors that MMA is built around star power. There are plenty of talented MMA fighters, but not all have the charisma, personality, fighting style or life story that can bring in the masses. ... More About: Gamble , Elitexc

Kings on Wednesday afternoon for the final press conference leading up to the Miguel Cotto-Shane Mosley WBA Welterweight Championship fight this Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. With the exception of a relatively surly champion, the entire dais was in good spirits, with a very sportsmanlike showing of respect by everyone involved in the promotion. Co-promoter Bob Arum led things off by stating that the event is nearly sold-out. Due to overwhelming demand for affordable seating, Goldenboy CEO Oscar De La Hoya announced that the Garden has released the upper mezzanine level tickets for just $50 each. EliteXC "Renegade" Final Press Conference Quotes - 09 Nov 2007 12:25:23am
2007-11-09 01:25:00 By Tom Casino KIMBO ?The time is getting near for me being able to do what I really like to do, and that?s fight. I am definitely ready to fight somebody. ?It?s not that I dislike doing interviews, but it is something I need to learn to get used to and get more comfortable doing. It is not personal. I am just trying to focus on my fight and trying to avoid distractions. But I know doing interviews before a fight is part of my job. ?This fight is not just about me. It is for my team that has worked so hard to get me ready. Of course, I wish it was Saturday now. I am definitely ready to hit somebody.?? BO CANTRELL ?I am not intimidated at all. This is not my first rodeo. This is more than a fight; it is like a title fight. Kimbo is getting a lot of attention so a victory would obviously be great for me. ?I am just coming out to do my job. EliteXC heads to Texas in search of identity
2007-11-09 00:58:00 By Steve Sievert It looked like something out of Land of the Lost, not a stage prop worthy of being part of the debut of America's newest mixed martial arts promotion. And, yet, there it was for fans at DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Miss., and for those tuning in on Showtime for EliteXC's premiere show, optimistically called "Destiny." Fighters made their way to the cage by walking through the mouth of the dragon - destiny indeed. It was, well, an interesting start back in February for EliteXC, which hoped to make a grand entrance into the consciousness of mixed martial arts fans with two legendary names in the sport headlining its first show. The upstart organization had the backing of a premium cable network in Showtime and the leadership, connections and bravado of longtime boxing promoter Gary Shaw. However, with the promotion on the verge of its fourth show, which will be held Saturday at AmericanBank Center in Corpus Christi, EliteXC is still searc... Yves Edwards Talks Gonzalez, EliteXC - 08 Nov 2007 11:46:26pm
2007-11-09 00:46:00 By Keith Mills The past two years have been rough on Yves Edwards . In the summer of 2005 Yves was on top of the world, beating Hermes Franca for a second time and getting an invitation to Pride?s Bushido Grand Prix while riding a seven-win streak. Problems developed with first a loss to Joachim Hansen in the first round of the tournament followed by an upset loss to Mark Hominick and seemingly ?final straw? loss to Joe Stevenson in UFC. Even BodogFIGHT resulted in two losses for the fighter at one point thought of as the best in the world. Now Yves looks to turn that around at ElteXC, largely due to his change in training at ATT where previous opponents Aaron Riley, Jorge Masvidal, and Mike Brown all train. This weekend fans get to see the initial results of that change as Yves faces Nick Gonzalez. KM: How do you feel about your debut in EliteXC this weekend? YE: I feel good about it. Shields Predicts Exciting Finish At EliteXC - 08 Nov 2007 11:38:28pm
2007-11-09 00:38:00 By Damon Martin As Jake Shields enters the last fight on his current EliteXC contract to take on Mike Pyle, it will not be for a title as the Cesar Gracie-trained student originally thought. But he still plans on bringing an exciting pace to the show and make his opponent pay for taking away the championship opportunity. ?I definitely was ready for a title fight,? said Shields. ?He took the title away from me by not fighting me (for it). I?m sure he has his reasons. It still kind of pisses me off. I?m going to go out there and take it out on him.? Pyle was not notified of the bout being a five-round title bout until about five weeks prior and determined that wasn?t enough training time. He subsequently opted for a three-round non-title fight instead. Since his last loss in late 2004, Shields has put together eight wins in a row over many top opponents. Lately it seems his motivation has moved to finishing his opponents with punishing stoppages. ?I think I just keep getting bet... More About: Predict , Elitexc , Finish , Nish

Born To Brawl - 08 Nov 2007 11:30:38pm
2007-11-09 00:30:00 By Josh Gross If it came earlier, he can't be sure. Nick Diaz can only recall as far back as the first grade, which for him was the time he first felt compelled to "hit and kick butt," thank you very much. Growing up poor in one of the biggest agricultural centers in the United States, Diaz has what on the surface reads like a classic fighter tale: A significant portion of his life was spent without the presence of his father; he developed a reputation for fighting 18 year olds when he was in the eighth grade; the bullied kid from Stockton, Calif., was more truant than student. But really, Diaz says even if he hadn't experienced those hardships, something, perhaps the same substance that forced a 7-iron into Tiger Woods' hands, would have driven him into prizefighting. "Nobody is going to understand that sort of thing: not your friends, not your girlfriend, not your mom, not your family," says Diaz, who steps into the cage against KJ Noons... More About: Brawl
Rickson Gracie "Hopes" for 2008 Return...If the money is right that is... -
More articles from this author:2007-11-09 00:25:00 Rickson Gracie fans will have to wait until next year to see the 48-year-old grappling legend return to the ring. Speaking exclusively with Sherdog.com's Denis Martins, Gracie, who turns 49 on Nov. 20, stated that he will be looking for a fight in early 2008 after negotiations for a proposed K-1 Dynamite!! bout on Dec. 31 ceased. "Even though I feel like I have nothing to prove, I'm still motivated to compete," said Gracie. "Possibly something in the beginning of next year, I hope." Rickson has not stepped in the ring since choking Masakatsu Funaki into submission in May of 2000. "If the price is right, I go for the competition," declared Rickson, who has a mixed martial arts record of 11-0-0. "I'm really looking [forward] to my next fight, but [a promoter] will have to pay me what I want." More About: Hopes , Money , Return , Rickson Gracie 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
