HDNET Fights "Reckless Abandon" - 08 Nov 2007 11:19:55pm
2007-11-09 00:19:00
By Brian Knapp HDNet Fights has announced former Icon Sport middleweight champion Jason ?Mayhem? Miller will collide with Sean Salmon in the feature bout at HDNet Fights ?Reckless Abandon ? on Saturday, Dec. 15 at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas. One of MMA?s true characters, Miller (19-5) has won 12 of his last 14 fights; his only losses during that span came to former UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and the highly regarded Frank Trigg. The soon-to-be 27-year-old remains the last man to defeat current EliteXC/Icon Sport middleweight champion Robbie Lawler, as he submitted the heavy-handed Pat Miletich protégé with a side choke in September 2006. Salmon (14-4), meanwhile, will enter the match on a three-fight winning streak. He defeated Marcus Vinicios at a Hardcore Championship Fighting event last month. This will be Salmon?s ninth fight of 2007, a year that began with his infamous head kick knockout loss to Rashad Evans at UFC Fight Night in January. ...
Mark Kerr Ends Seven-Year Drought! - 08 Nov 2007 11:11:54pm
2007-11-09 00:11:00
By Brian Knapp Mark Kerr had almost forgotten what it felt like to be a winner. Kerr ended a seven-year drought Wednesday, as he submitted Steve Gavin in the co-main event at World Cagefighting Organization?s ?Havoc in Hollywood? at the Circus Nightclub in Hollywood, Calif. The victory, which came at 1:39 of the opening round, snapped Kerr?s five-fight losing streak. He had not won since submitting Igor Borisov with a neck crank at PRIDE 10 ?Return of the Warriors? in August 2000. Kerr (14-6, 1 NC), a former Div. I collegiate wrestling champion who turns 40 in December, rose to prominence in the late 1990s when he opened his career with 11 consecutive victories, many of them inside the UFC and PRIDE promotions. His struggle with opiate pain killers was the focus of the HBO documentary ?The Smashing Machine,? which premiered in 2002.

2007-11-08 23:58:00
By Josh Gross Riddick Bowe says he wants to be the first man to hold major boxing and mixed martial arts titles at the same time. The problem for the 40-year-old former world heavyweight boxing king, he's closer to a title in MMA -- and he's never tried the sport. "I've been running, doing things as I was doing them in boxing," Bowe told Sherdog.com Wednesday evening at the Circus Nightclub in Hollywood, Calif., where he was on hand to announce a "tentative" MMA debut on Dec. 12. "I guess now all I have to do is get down with the ground work," he said. Having never been on the mat, Bowe said he plans on his first MMA-related grappling session to take place on Veteran's Day. Nick Diaz Says What He Thinks - 08 Nov 2007 10:50:24pm
2007-11-08 23:50:00
By Matt Young Kimbo Slice came to town with the reputation of being a bit of a wild child, but it was Nick Diaz doing the acting out at Wednesday's EliteXC press conference at the Ortiz Center. Diaz, who will fight K.J. Noons for EliteXC's 160-pound title in Saturday's main event at the American Bank Center, voiced his opinion on everything from legalizing marijuana to Showtime's mixed martial arts announcers. After registering the biggest win of his career by beating Takanori Gomi on a PRIDE fight card back in February, Diaz (15-6) tested positive for marijuana. The fight was ruled a no contest and the Stockton, Calif., native was suspended for six months. The failed drug test hasn't changed Diaz's lifestyle, though. He came back to win a split decision over Mike Aina on his EliteXC debut in September, and says he hasn't stopped smoking marijuana. "People can say all they want, 'Oh, he was suspended for marijuana,' but they never say,...

Matt Hughes' Blog - Week Eight - 08 Nov 2007 10:31:13pm
2007-11-08 23:31:00
By Matt Hughes With Tommy Speer?s win this week, I?ve broken the curse, so to speak, and it feels great, and I really feel like I?ve got two quality guys (Speer and Mac Danzig) in the quarterfinals. I?m heavily outnumbered, but I really like my guys. They?re not just fill-ins, they?re quality fighters. Tommy Speer comes from the mold I came from. I was a wrestler that liked to impose my will and use my strength, and that?s what Tommy does. He imposes his will, uses his strength, and there?s no quit in Tommy whatsoever. I did have to get Tommy to show more emotion this week, and even though I?m a poker face when I fight, I?m not just out there doing moves, and if I can use J-Roc (Jared Rollins) as an example, he was a guy out there who looked like he was out there just throwing punches and doing moves. I think if he would have shown a little more emotion and a little more dedication and a little bit more heart, he would have went out there and realized that he wasn?t winning on hi...

Pulver Bringing a Lil' Evil to the WEC - 08 Nov 2007 10:25:39pm
2007-11-08 23:25:00
By Thomas Gerbasi At 32 years old, Jens Pulver could walk away from the sport of mixed martial arts tomorrow and his place in the record books would be secure. The first ever UFC Lightweight Champion, the first man to beat BJ Penn, the first fighter to put the 155-pound weight class on the map, a coach on season five of The Ultimate Fighter, and the list could go on. But for the man known as ?Lil? Evil ?, it?s not time to walk off into the sunset ? he still has unfinished business in this sport, and on December 12th, he will begin his quest not only for the WEC featherweight championship, but to do for the 145-pound weight class what he did for the lightweights. And if anyone can do it, he can. ?I would love to make that attempt, and that?s my job and what I?m here to do, said Pulver. ?I want to build the WEC and build the 145 pound division and the other lighter weight classes.? Getting respect for fighters below the 170-pound weight class has always been a cause for Iowa?s P...
Final PPV Numbers For De La Hoya vs Mayweather - 08 Nov 2007 10:13:06am
2007-11-08 11:13:00
By Adam Swift Dave Meltzer reports that HBO's final number for the 5/25/07 De La Hoya v. Mayweather pay-per-view was 2.4 million buys for $134.4 million, shattering the previous boxing pay-per-view record (Holyfield v. Tyson which did 1.99 million buys in 1997). That is a significant increase over the original estimate of 2.15 million buys. The event grossed $165 million overall including pay-per-view, live gate ($18.4 million), closed circuit TV ($1.4 million), sports bar and restaurant rights fees ($4.6 million), and undisclosed merchandise and TV rights fees. To put that number in perspective, Zuffa is believed to have grossed $190 million total last year. The fight was originally projected to do in the range of 1.4 - 1.6 million buys. That would have been consistent with De La Hoya's previous record of 1.4 million buys v. Felix Trinidad in 1998, the largest grossing non-heavyweight boxing pay-per-view in history. The ground breaking fight promotion reality program De...

(Mike Pyle & Coach Ron Frazier work the mits) Mike Pyle is in Corpus Christi, Texas ready to take on Jake Shields in the co-Main Event of the Elite XC card on Showtime. Mike had an incredible training camp, looks sharp and is ready to make his name known. If you?re unfamiliar with Quicksand Pyle, he?s well versed in Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. Mike taught himself how to fight as a teenager in Tennesse. He put mats in his mom?s shed and taught himself jiu jitsu while beating up his buddies (who he bribed with beer) and watching tapes. He is a consummate competitor who never backs down from a challenge. He fought Quinton Jackson at the beginning of his career in a fight many people feel could have been judged his way, he took on Andrei Semenov in Russia, beat Jon Fitch and Shonie Carter, held the WEC Welterweight Title and competed in the IFL at 185lbs a weight class above his fighting weight. If he and Jake Shields had been promoted better, this fight could be headlining one of ...

2007-11-08 07:53:00
Black belt may fight in absolute Submission Wrestling tournament The Super Challenge Grappling event is investing heavily in the mission of promoting the biggest submission grappling event in history. In doing so, they have recruited a team of first-rate tough guys. Their next target is none other than Marcelinho Garcia . Away from MMA till the end of the year, due to the cut suffered in his K-1 Hero?s debut, Marcelinho is seriously considering the possibility of entering the dispute. According to Fabio Gurgel, the athlete?s coach, the tournament would serve to keep Garcia in competition rhythm while awaiting his next commitment in the ring next year. In practice it would be an opportunity for Marcelinho to try and win the absolute title that escaped him at the ADCC. ?Marcelinho wants to focus on MMA, but he?ll only be back in the ring next year. That?s why I think it?s important he participate in Super Challenge Grappling, which will be a big event. After the MTL final, on the co...

Black House Going Strong - 08 Nov 2007 06:45:10am
2007-11-08 07:45:00
Carlao Barreto speaks on future of team with new home base News Black House would be nearing its end reached Carlao Barreto?s ears. Put off, the team?s leader spoke to GRACIEMAG.com to shed light on the situation at the team he considers the greatest MMA team in Brazil. ?The news being spread around in the press is wrong, when you say something to the public it has to be done responsibly. The only people that can talk in respect to Black House is me and Joinha. What happened was that we left X-Gym, in Recreio, and moved to MaxFit, the No Gi center, in Meier. The reason was simple, the team grew a lot and started to get in the way of the normal gym, so each went their separate ways, after the end of the administrative contract, in the friendliest way possible,? said Carlao. ?At the new gym we have all the infrastructure we need for a big team like ours: doctors, physical trainers, nutritionists, orthomolecular treatment, transportation of athletes. We just changed locations, but t...

By Jason Stern / Photos: David Greene WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto and three-time former champion Sugar Shane Mosley faced off at today's final presser at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in New York City. Both fighters appeared fit and confident of victory when they collide Saturday at Madison Square Garden and on pay-per-view. Miguel Cotto: I trained very hard for the past two-and-a-half months. I came here last Friday with my trainer and I plan to take my title back to Puerto Rico. Shane Mosley: Cotto's not someone to go in there and play patty-cake with. This is a history-making fight. I can't wait to get in there and do my stuff and I wish we can go right to the fight right now. Bob Arum (Cotto's promoter): He's fought everyone who's in front of him. He's never questioned who his opponent is. (Quoting from the 1992 movie "My Cousin Vinny") Youth will be served. Oscar De La Hoya (Mosley's promoter): Mosley is somethi...

2007-11-08 07:19:00
By Damon Martin Since his fight on July 7 against Hermes Franca, Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight titleholder Sean Sherk has been sitting in limbo following a positive test result for performance enhancing drugs. He has twice been scheduled to have a hearing with the California State Athletic Commission to resolve the accusations and twice the commission has issued a continuance to a future date. ?It makes me real angry,? said Sherk about the appeal process with the CSAC. ?They had a lot of time to prepare for my case and they weren?t prepared and now I?m the one suffering for it. I?m the only one suffering in this whole situation. I mean, I?m sitting here and I feel kind of helpless. ?I?m in the hands of the California commission and I don?t know if they?re not taking this case as serious as they should or what the deal is, but it?s real, real frustrating for me.? While waiting for the final judgment on his case ? Sherk is currently slated to appear again in front of ...

Sherk Hearing Postponed - 08 Nov 2007 05:21:03am
2007-11-08 06:21:00
By Brian Knapp The California State Athletic Commission today confirmed the postponement of UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk ?s Tuesday, Nov. 13 appeal hearing for a steroids-related suspension. CSAC associate governmental program analyst Bill Douglas cited scheduling conflicts as the reasons behind the delay. The hearing has not yet been rescheduled. ?Eleven different individuals need their schedule coordinated ? not an easy task,? Douglas said. The CSAC made a previous decision to delay a ruling on Sherk on Oct. 31 after commissioner Julio Ramirez expressed concern over a 17-page brief from Howard Jacobs, Sherk?s attorney. The brief, which included 20 exhibits, never reached the seven CSAC members charged with voting. Jacobs was provided with an acknowledgement of receipt by CSAC executive director Armando Garcia, Douglas and Karen Chappelle ? the deputy attorney general for the state of California. By Joseph Santoliquito World middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik will have to rearrange his plans this weekend?and the possible February 16, 2008 date for his rematch with Jermain Taylor. The Ring has learned that Pavlik, who was scheduled to arrive in New York City Wednesday for this weekend?s Miguel Cotto-Shane Mosley showdown at Madison Square Garden, needed more than 100 stitches to repair an injury sustained Tuesday afternoon when Pavlik put his hands through a window while trying to repair it. ?Kelly is going to be okay,? assured Mike Pavlik, Kelly?s father. ?He had an accident and suffered these little cuts all over his hands that needed at least 100 stitches. I don?t know how long it will take for Kelly to come back, but we had to change our plans to go to New York this weekend. Kelly?s hands are swollen, and he certainly won?t be able to shake anyone?s hand. The doctors also told him not to travel, especially on a plane, because the pressure could open the stitches. But ...

Karo Parisyan: One step at a time back to a title shot - 08 Nov 2007 03:00:
2007-11-08 04:00:00
By John Buhl It?s difficult to get to the pinnacle of any sport, and Karo Parisyan knows from first hand experience that mixed martial arts is no exception. To put his UFC 78 showdown against PRIDE veteran Ryo Chonan in Newark, N.J., on November 17 into the proper context, you have to go back two years to when Parisyan should?ve been fighting Matt Hughes for the UFC welterweight title. An injury forced him out of the fight, and he?s been waiting to get that elusive title shot ever since. Parisyan went through a variety of emotions when he realized the opportunity to fight for a championship had passed him by for no other reason except bad luck ? anger, frustration, impatience ? wondering how much longer the wait would be or if he?d ever get another chance. ?I was supposed to get a warm up fight to get the ring rust off,? Parisyan says, talking about his first fight back after healing from the quadriceps injury that cost him his shot at Hughes. ?The guy I ended up fighting, Nic...
