?I want a fight with Manny Pacquiao ,? asserted Marquez . In 2004, the two fought to a controversial stalemate?now Marquez feels the time is right for a rematch. Kid Yamamoto To Compete In Both K-1 & World Victory Road - 05 Nov 2007 07:1
2007-11-05 08:19:00
By Gino Mongelli Fight fans will soon see knockout artist Norifumi ?Kid? Yamamoto back in the ring, as he has reportedly abandoned his hopes of wrestling in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games to concentrate on his career in mixed martial arts. Yamamoto (16-1) will compete for both K-1 and the new World Victory Road organization. Yamamoto made the formal announcement Oct. 31 that he would not participate in the All-Japan Wrestling Championships Dec. 21-23 but would instead focus on MMA. Yamamoto made his return to MMA at K-1 HERO'S ?Tournament Final? in September, as he defeated Bibiano Fernandes by unanimous decision following a nearly year-long absence from the sport. That same month, Kenichi Yumoto ? the man who was to represent Japan in Yamamoto?s 60-kilogram weight division at the 2008 Olympics ? lost a qualifier match, which presented Yamamoto with another opportunity to qualify for the Beijing Games. Akiyama's Victory Seals Spot In Dynamite 2007 - 05 Nov 2007 07:11:35am
2007-11-05 08:11:00
By Gino Mongelli Following his successful showing at K-1 HERO?S ?OLYMPIA HERO?S 2007? on Oct. 28, FEG has requested Yoshihiro Akiyama compete in its K-1 ?Dynamite 2007? on Monday, Dec. 31 at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka. Longtime rival Makoto Takimoto (3-3) has been suggested as a likely opponent. Takimoto was Akiyama?s rival in the Judo world, as the two vied to represent Japan in major international competition. He won Olympic gold in Judo at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. His last MMA victory came over Zelg Galesic (7-3) in April, as he submitted the European with a Kimura at PRIDE 34 ?Kamikaze.? Akiyama (10-1), meanwhile, stunned the MMA world with his first-round knockout victory over Denis Kang on Oct. 28 in Seoul, South Korea. A strong right uppercut spelled the end for Kang (27-9-1), whom many consider the top middleweight striker in K-1. Kang had not been knocked out in a fight in more than six years. The victory raised Akiyama?s stock considerably. FEG P...

Canadian MMA Regulation Becoming A Hot Topic - 04 Nov 2007 02:27:56pm
2007-11-04 15:27:00
By Marco Antico Ken Hayashi, commissioner of the Ontario Athletic Commission in Canada, spoke to MMAWeekly recently about his views regarding the increasing number of mixed martial arts shows taking place on Ontario Indian Reservations. ?Those guys are taking a big chance with putting on these shows. If someone gets seriously hurt there will be serious liability issues for those connected with the event and it will set the sport back several years in Ontario. Especially if it?s found that they?ve not done the due diligence that other professional athletic commissions are doing,? he explained, as he referred mainly to medical testing such as CAT scans, EEGs, and full blood work (Hep B, Hep C and HIV), which most other provincial commissions require. ?I highly doubt whether these guys are even making much money from these shows. The whole thing kind of makes me scratch my head,? continued Hayashi. ?Our lawyers have concluded that these events are clearly illegal under section 83 ...

Anderson Silva At The Top Of The Middle - 04 Nov 2007 01:25:21pm
2007-11-04 14:25:00
1. Anderson Silva The Ultimate Fighting Championship Middle weight Champion, Silva has done nothing but win since debuting in the promotion midway through 2006, finishing all five of his fights decisively. He recently emphasized his dominance with a second dismantling of former champion Rich Franklin. Silva has gone 8-1 in his last nine fights, his lone loss during that span being a disqualification loss to Yushin Okami in a fight he was otherwise dominating. 2. Paulo Filho Not many fighters remain undefeated in mixed martial arts, but somehow, Filho has managed to do that en route to a 15-0 record. He had a banner year in 2006 with wins over Murilo ?Ninja? Rua, Ryo Chonan and Kazuo Misaki. Out of action for the early part of 2007, Filho debuted in August for World Extreme Cagefighting capturing its middleweight title with a TKO stoppage of Joe Doerksen. 3. Matt Lindland Lindland amassed a 9-3 record in the UFC before disputes led to a parting of ways a little more than two years...

Inside MMA Report: Wanderlei, Barnett, Lindland - 04 Nov 2007 01:15:23pm
2007-11-04 14:15:00
By Chris Block Interview with Wanderlei Silva: Silva says he does not like Chuck Liddell. It?s hard to understand what Wanderlei?s saying so I can?t decipher exactly why he feels this way? He?s been waiting for this fight for five years. He wanted his first fight back in UFC to be in Vegas. Silva says he wants to put on a good show and that he doesn?t want the fight to go to a decision and either him or Chuck is gonna end up getting knocked out. Josh Barnet t Update: Josh Barnett has a wrestling match for IGF in Tokyo on December 20th (that?s my birthday, I?ll be wrestling a bottle of vodka in Vegas. Throw another in there it?ll be a three-way dance). Two days later he was a catch-wrestling match for Pancrase. No MMA in his future as of now. Interview with Matt Lindland: Lindland says he?s not going to whine about his dismissal from the UFC after saying at the time of his release he had more wins than any other fighter currently fighting for the UFC and he was promised tit...

Jon Murphy: Out Until 2008 - 04 Nov 2007 11:57:48am
2007-11-04 12:57:00
By Arias Garcia Jr. When Combat in the Cage promoter Ed Hsu announced he would be assisting EliteXC President Gary Shaw with an upcoming ShoXC card in New Jersey, many people banked on the participation of young heavyweight Jon Murphy . It seemed logical because Murphy has fought for Hsu numerous times and was already showcased on the first ShoXC event with a knockout victory over Dave Huckaba in August. However, this Pennsylvania native will not compete in the next ShoXC card on December 7, from the Collins Arena in Lincroft, New Jersey. ?As far as the ShoXC card, they were having me headline it. Problem is with the shoulder, I'm not fighting. I'm done for this year as far as competition,? Murphy told ADCC News. (Continue Reading)

Battle brewing on cage fights - 04 Nov 2007 11:09:40am
2007-11-04 12:09:00
Mayor David Lansford By Kevin Wilson From all indications, city groups may have a fight about fights. The Clovis Civic Center policy committee discussed allowing contact sports at the city-owned center in October?s meeting, and more discussion is planned for Monday?s meeting. The contact sport in question is mixed martial arts, and Mark Anthony Baca of Clovis is trying to get fighting events at the Civic Center. Mixed martial arts, Baca said, is a combat sport where two fighters go at each other until one cannot reasonably defend himself or is placed in a submission hold. Clovis Mayor David Lansford is one of the sport?s critics, and he wanted it put on the policy committee?s agenda so there could be a clear policy for or against it. ?I think mixed martial arts is an activity that is a destructive activity for participants and spectators alike,? Lansford said. ?I think as a society, we?re becoming more violent. This activity certainly doesn?t help to rectify that problem....

Gonzaga pushes the envelope - 04 Nov 2007 10:43:42am
2007-11-04 11:43:00
By Dan Duggan All it took for Gabriel Gonzaga to get over the disappointment he felt after his loss to Randy Couture at UFC 74 in late August was a walk to his mailbox the day after the fight. Gonzaga found an overflow of fan mail from admirers of his toughness and character. ?His mailbox was full of messages of people congratulating him for the awesome fight, saying he was a true warrior,? said Marco Alvan, the Brazil native?s head trainer and translator. ?He got a lot of mail from people saying even though he lost that (fight), they became his No. 1 fan for the way he conducted himself, giving respect to Randy Couture.? Although Couture, 44, is one of the most accomplished fighters in UFC history, Gonzaga was favored in their heavyweight title bout. But the 28-year-old Ludlow resident never got the chance to reward the oddsmakers? faith, as an accidental headbutt early in the first round broke his nose. Blood pouring from his nose and pooling in his throat, it was difficult to ...

Sean Salmon Discusses Superman, Mayhem - 04 Nov 2007 08:55:37am
2007-11-04 09:55:00
By Sean Salmon Wow, have I ever signed myself up for a very hectic month and a half. It is now official that I will be fighting Dennis ?Superman ? Hallman in the ?alternate bout? for the Strikeforce four-man middleweight tournament. In case you haven?t been paying attention, that means I am fighting Hallman (37-12-2) on Nov. 16 for Strikeforce (www.strikeforceusa.net) and Jason ?Mayhem ? Miller (19-5) on Dec. 15 for HDNet Fights (www.hdnetfights.com). This is an ideal situation for me. I started fighting because I loved the challenge and the competition, and this is by far the biggest test of my young career. I have known of Hallman since I started fighting. Mainly, (like everyone else) because he has two wins over Matt Hughes. I have come to learn that he is as tough as they come and a magician on the ground. What a test. Do I keep myself safe and keep it standing ? or really test myself by scoring a takedown? You gotta love fighting! (Continue Reading)

FiveOuncesOfPain.com has confirmed through its sources that Terrell is in fact off the card due to what was termed as a severe ankle injury that was sustained during training. This is yet another in a long line of setbacks that has limited the talented middleweight to just one fight in the last year and a half. 2007-11-04 03:32:00
By Mark Gilbert RASHAD EVANS claims he is a far superior fighter to fellow light-heavyweight Michael Bisping. The duo collide at UFC 78 on November 17 in the first UFC headline bout to feature two Ultimate Fighter winners. But Evans , who has dropped down from heavyweight to light-heavyweight for the clash in New Jersey, reckons he is ahead of Bisping in every department. He said: ?I do just about everything better than Michael Bisping. ?I think he?s pretty tough but I?m just a better fighter than him.? A win for either fighter will elevate them into the UFC's top five light-heavyweights and closer to a title shot against champion Rampage Jackson. But Evans insists they both have a point to prove following Bisping's controversial victory over Matt Hamill at UFC 75 and his own draw with Tito Ortiz at UFC 73. (Continue Reading)

Notes From The Underdog - 04 Nov 2007 01:20:33am
2007-11-04 02:20:00
By Ben Fowlkes It?s late at night and I?m sitting in Brent Beauparlant?s hotel room. The Canadian middleweight is lounging in bed with the covers pulled over him. He?s unshaven, with his arms crossed over his chest in the posture of someone trying to keep himself contained. The room is cluttered with clothes and training gear, making it clear that Beauparlant has been hiding out here and waiting anxiously for fight time. I?ve come up here to ask Beauparlant about his Grand Prix bout with top-ranked middleweight Benji Radach on Saturday night ? a bout no one expects Beauparlant to win. It takes about ten seconds for Beauparlant to let me know exactly how he feels about that perception of him: pissed off. He?s upset that the media and the industry insiders seem to think this is a gimme for Radach. He?s upset that no one even in his native Canada is rooting for him, despite the fact that his fight will be on the live portion of the Grand Prix broadcast in his home country. ...

A Message From Fedor Emelianenko - 04 Nov 2007 12:57:10am
2007-11-04 01:57:00
Your wishes come true when you ask for it come New Year's Eve. Fedor 's mail is kind of attacked by Japanses fans sending tons of messages. Since it seems unreal to reply immediately to everyone Fedor asked to publish his open message to everybody concerned. The point is that during last four years Fedor always fought in the New Year's Eve in Japan giving his fans the opportunitiy to see him perform in the ring. Now that he signed with M-1 Global, Japanese fans are worried they won't see Fedor fight anymore... But like Russians say: "Hope never dies". Actually no one better than Fedor himself can say it: "It's always a pleasure to read fans' mail. And it's a great pleasure to receive it from the Japanese fans. It's them who i used to meet New Year with celebrating my victories. They've always inspired me through the toughest moments, hardest bouts of my entire career. While nursing a twisted ankle, the fight-crazed Eklund happened to stumble upon an Ultimate Fighting Championship event and was captivated by the action. And so his journey began. At the time, professional boxing and other combat sports were banned in Sweden. Arona: ?UFC rules were made for me? - 04 Nov 2007 12:29:19am
2007-11-04 01:29:00
By Marcelo Alonso Still without a contract with a major event, the black-belt from BTT, Ricardo Arona , ensures that the rules of the biggest event of MMA in the world nowadays have been made for his kind of game. "The rules of UFC were made to me. I´ll enter the octagon to stay. Nobody will take me off. The rules, the time zone, everything is perfect for me. These rules where you can use the elbow, vaseline on the face and rounds with five minutes, have been made to me. I´m used to fight 20 minutes. In addition to the rules, is also prohibited the use of bombs, and many people are going out because of that. I never used bomb, so I am thinking that what´s happening is very funny. I´m laughing, because I never had problem with that, "said Arona. Source: www.tatame.com

"The Goliath" Neil Grove - 04 Nov 2007 12:06:39am
2007-11-04 01:06:00
By David West For a guy who has only had four fights, the excitement surrounding British heavyweight Neil Grove is almost as big as the man himself. Tipping the scales at just under 290 pounds and standing 6? 8?, Grove arrived on the radar when he knocked out Pride veteran James ?The Colossus? Thompson in ten seconds at Cage Rage 22. His massive size belies Grove?s natural athleticism and explosive power. In his last outing, he stream-rolled over Croatian Thai boxer Domagoj Ostojic in 34 seconds with a display of brutal ground and pound. Born in South Africa, but now a naturalized British citizen, Grove is something of an anomaly in Mixed Martial Arts, coming from a background in traditional Goju Ryu karate. Trained by Sensei Gavin Mulholland and representing the Daigaku Karate Kai dojo, the 36 year-old Grove is currently 4-0 in MMA and has only had one opponent survive into the second round. He?s currently preparing to make this third Cage Rage appearance on December 1st against...

2007-11-04 01:00:00
By Luca Atalla In a good mood, Marcelo Garcia asked: ?Is it too late to work?? In New York, it?s already past nine at night on Friday, a holiday in Brazil. But no, it?s not too late to be the first to hear what the three-time ADCC champion has to say about his loss to the Korean Dae Won Kim, in his debut MMA fight, last Sunday. So, we carry on? ?Look, first of all, I want to say that I?m thinking about my next fight already. I think those concerned with me want to know how I faced defeat, and aside from the moment of uncertainty, which lasted a little over an hour after the fight, I already knew this is really what I want for my life. ?And, final result aside, I can say I learned more and am much more prepared for my next fight than if I had managed to submit him early on. ?To be honest, I lacked experience."
