The Rocket ride of Ike Davis
2009-09-17 18:08:00
It seems like everywhere you turn in the Metsblogosphere Ike Davis is being mentioned, now those accolades have even begun to suggest that the young first baseman could end up in Queens next year. After years of watching Omar over inflate prospects and rush them to the majors, only to have them flop, I'm leery of anyone being placed on an accelerated path with him in charge. I've asked this several times, since Omar took over and began this accelerated program that is suppose to push prospects to meet their potential what has it produced. In five years, Mike Pelfrey advanced faster then any other pitcher from his draft and now he can't decide whether to balk or throw the ball into the ground half the time ( of course that's an exaggeration ).Any other player on this team from the farm you could say the same thing about, they need more seasoning. Now; Nick Evans, Josh Thole, Tobi Stoner and Lance Broadway you could say were a result of injuries but guys like Dan Murphy, Fernando ...

Is Beltran preparing to demand an extention...
2009-09-17 02:50:00
Carlos Beltran is one of the best center fielders in the league, he is the quintessential five tool player, but at 32 y/o and coming off a knee injury that cost him most of the season, it would be irresponsible to not consider trading him. However, the Mets could not get in return equal value for what Beltran means to this team and they don't have a clear cut replacement in the field or at the plate. Beltran has increased his value to this team by becoming a clubhouse leader and has really become irreplaceable to this current core. There is no coincidence that since he went on the DL, June 22nd, the team fell apart, but coming off the injury his value wouldn't be high enough to garner a major package. It has seemed a bit odd that Beltran, who has two years remaining on his contract, would risk surgery by coming back at the end of a meaningless season. If Beltran was in a walk year or it was near the trade deadline, you would think he was auditioning for other teams but that's not ...
Give Perpetual Pedro the years...
2009-09-17 01:41:00
Pedro Feliciano was a classic late blooming lefty, even though he's 33 y/o his arm has very little mileage. His first exposure to AAA was in 2000 with the Dodgers and from then until 2004 he only appeared in 280 minor league innings ( overall he only has 180 innings in AAA).In 2004 at the age of 27 y/o he was in Norfolk with a 5.30 ERA in 32 appearances, with his career going nowhere he was allowed to play in Japan. While playing with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in 2005 Pedro posted a solid 3.89 ERA in 37 appearances. When he returned the pitching coach was Rick Peterson who changed his arm angle, between the 3/4 arm angle and his international experience he became a very effective left handed reliever.Over the last four seasons Pedro has been one of the most effective and consistent relievers in the league, posting an ERA of 3.09 in 202 innings. Sure he's been used a lot over the last four years, but he has shown no signs of injury and was used very little in the minors. It's being r...

On the Bubble: John Maine
2009-09-16 02:50:00
Ok, this is the last installment of the "On the bubble" for the pitching staff, the rest of the staff is either locks or are inconsequential to next year's staff.A quick recap:The rotational locks are Johan Santana, Oliver Perez ( due to his contract), Mike Pelfrey and I'll address John Maine in this post. The pen: Franscico Rodriguez, Pedro Feliciano, Brian Stokes, Pat Misch, Nelson Figueroa, Bobby Parnell and Sean Green ( trade bait). The idea of non-tendering John Maine just doesn't make sense to me, a 28 y/o hard throwing right hander who you can control for the next two years and has had recent success in the NY market isn't someone you just give away.Even as an injury risk, Maine only made 2.6MM and will only make 15 starts this year, so how much could he be awarded this off-season. Relatively speaking what Maine will cost for a possible 15 win pitcher is cheap compared to what one will cost on the open market. But I still think Maine is pitching out of position, Maine has al...

On the Bubble: Nelson Figueroa
2009-09-15 23:48:00
This is the year Nelson Figueroa would come to camp with a job, Figgy is perfect for the longman/spot starters role.Figgy has been around long enough that he's crafty enough to get most hitters out and make adjustments on the fly. Being a veteran pitcher he has the essential short term memory. As a longman you come in when bats are hot and are sometimes expected to go longer, on shorter rest then expected, both of which can result in ugly outings, which usually takes a thick skin.I always saw Figgy as a AAAA type of guy but he has made me into a believer and at what he'd cost I'd make him the longman. This year he's made six starts, three of which were quality starts, overall he went 1-5 with a 4.94 ERA. As a reliever he's appeared in six games with a 3.65 ERA.

On the Bubble: Pat Misch
2009-09-15 22:20:00
This one is a no brainer to me, Pat Misch is a 28 y/o left handed pitcher who can start, long and short relieve. The Mets claimed him off waivers when the Giants ran into a roster crunch as they built a veteran playoff roster. Misch made around league min. at 407K, he still has options and can be under control for five more years. I don't have any grand expectations of him as a starter but I could see him having success as a spot starter and second lefty in the pen. Especially with him having options there's no reason to release him, even if he struggles he can be sent down. Misch has made 3 starts he's 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA. As a reliever he made 15 appearances with a 2.89 ERA.

On the bubble: Tim Redding
2009-09-15 20:32:00
So the first candidate was Sean Green who made the cut because of his low cost, possible trade value and minimum risk potential, next up is Tim Redding.Redding is a 31 y/o right handed starting pitcher who could best be labeled a journeyman at best or a AAAA pitcher at worst. The Mets signed him to a one year 2.25MM deal, Redding was available because the Nationals chose not to offer him arbitration. While the Nats weren't willing to pay him what he'd recieve in arbitration there were several teams interested in his services. The Mets won the bid for his services because they were a contender, he wanted to return home and the Mets were willing to give him a major league contract. At the time, it made sense between his numbers against the NL east and the roster we had around him, it seemed like a no risk signing especially with other fifth starter candidates Freddy Garcia and Livan Hernandez on board. As we all remember Redding was one of the first to hit the disabled list and didn...

On the Bubble: Sean Green
2009-09-15 17:23:00
I'm not one of those "break-up the core" fans, I believe with the caliber of our five top players ( Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Santana, Rodriguez) when healthy depending upon the players you surround them with, you are an automatic contender. In fact, my contention is that Omar's biggest failure is his inability to provide his core with a solid surrounding cast. The team is filled with either elite players or huge risk/reward type guys, Omar has never provided those second tier type of solid regular players who would never be considered All-stars.So call me an optimist if you must, but I don't think we're that far off from returning to contention, I'm going to do a series of posts on guys who were the supporting cast this season, who I believe are on the bubble. When the Mets acquired Sean Green in the J.J. Putz trade there were many who felt he was the steal of the entire deal. Green was a 29 y/o relatively cheap and controllable player, known as a workhorse with a set-up man's ...

Who's playing fall and winter ball...
2009-09-14 19:26:00
It was reported earlier that Tobi Stoner and Dan Murphy will be playing winter ball (source Metsblog). Adam Rubin is reporting that several prospects will also be playing in the Arizona fall league.By the way, as the Daily News previously reported, top-10 prospects Ike Davis, Jenrry Mejia and Ruben Tejada will participate in the Arizona Fall League. They will be joined by pitchers Scott Moviel, Eric Niesen and Josh Stinson. Davis is currently with Team USA at the World Cup in Europe. source Daily News

Another day more injuries...
2009-09-14 18:40:00
In the first inning of yesterdays day game, it was observed the Ken Takahashi was warming up in the bullpen. Whether is was a side session or he was attempting to gauge an injury is unknown but Taki never came into the game and it was later revealed that he was unavailable ( source Daily News). Although, he's been surprisingly effective the 40 y/o can't be our second lefty, the Mets need to be younger and less injury prone...In the second game, Fernando Tatis left the game with a sprained finger attempting to catch a ball while crashing into the left field wall (source Metsblog). I have to agree with Matt on this one, Tatis should have no future with team and the ABs he's taking should be given to players who will be here next year; Nick Evans, Dan Murphy, Cory Sullivan, Jeremy Reed and Angel Pagan. Luis Castillo was beamed in the arm with an errant pitch by Pedro Martinez and went down in obvious pain. Castillo would stay in the game but wore protection on the arm.

No Schneider- No Big Pelf...
2009-09-13 17:28:00
On Sept. 6th Mike Pelfrey went eight innings against the Chicago Cubs in which he allowed one run on five hits and one walk, while striking out five. It was a big outing for Pelfrey who had two horrible back-to-back outings, in 9.2 innings he allowed 11 runs on 17 hits and 10 walks while striking out seven.I'm not a big Brian Schneider fan, especially with him hitting under .200 but it was clear to me that Pelfrey's good outing against the Cubs can be attributed to the catcher. In those two bad outings it seemed that Pelfrey's struggles were more mental then anything else. Schneider handled Pelfrey with kit gloves; head nods on good pitches, pointing his mitt to Pelfrey on extra nasty pitches and getting to the mound quickly if Pelfrey showed any signs of frustration. After the Cubs game the plan was for Schneider to work with Pelf for the rest of the year, but maybe with the catcher admitting to not being in the teams plans for next year they decided to see how he would work wit...
Is Pagan our Werth/ Victorino
2009-09-12 18:24:00
In 49 games (131 ABs) he hit .313 with a Slg. pct of .473 and an OBP of .397 despite being questionable defensively that was enough for the Mets to make him their left fielder; who, Dan Murphy. However, Angel Pagan has had twice as many at bats with the same amount of success and still is considered a fourth outfielder. In 68 games ( 266 ABs) he's hitting .308 with a Slg. pct. .500 and an OBP .348. In three partial seasons prior to this year he had 409 plate appearances in which he hit .262. In 2005 Pagan was the Mets #16 prospect (source Jon Sickel's) but in 2006 he was traded to the Cubs for cash considerations and by 2008 they were willing to return him for two low-level minor league players ( source Newsday). Despite having lead-off speed, hitting .271 in 77 games and having the versatility to play all three outfield positions, the short fused Lou Pinella had grown frustrated with the talent he saw that was negated by the mental errors. So Pagan has a record of making mental er...
Schneider a goner..
2009-09-12 17:43:00
Adam Rubin of the Daily News has some great quotes from Brian Schneider who appears to have excepted his fate, that he will not return next year to this team. Schneider never lived up to his reputation as a stellar defensive catcher and while we all expected him to be a weak hitter, no one could have seen him hitting under .200. I do believe most of his struggles can be attributed to nagging injuries that he's played through. "I won't be back," Schneider told the Daily News, accepting that the Mets don't plan to re-sign him. "I'm okay with that. I'll easily get a job next year. I'm not worried about it. I'll get a job and just move on. Guys do that. I'm not going to retire. No way." source Daily News Schneider has been a class act, he could have easily slid down to the end of the dugout and waited for the season to end but instead he has been proactive with Josh Thole and Mike Pelfrey. While I agree with the Mets that it's time to move on, I think it's a mistake with this ...

What will happen at 2B
2009-09-12 02:19:00
The other day, John Heyman at his twitter account reported that Luis Castillo may once again find himself on the market during the off-season. The Mets would have traded Castillo this off-season had they found a taker but when they couldn't, they were unwilling to eat the remaining 18MM on his contract. Louie's comeback year, doesn't appear to have provided him with any job security instead it looks like the Mets are hoping that with one less year and a .300 BA he's more appealing to another club.Joel Sherman of the NY Post takes a look at how the Mets could move Castillo and thinks that the Tigers could be a match. The Tigers are likely to lose Placido Polanco to free agency after this season, opening up second base. Jeremy Bonderman and Nate Robertson are both heading toward the final year of their contracts, Bonderman due to make $12.5 million next year and Robertson $10 million. soure NY Post Of course, everybody points to Orlando Hudson who after begging the Mets to sign him...
Ways to honor our history...
2009-09-11 21:08:00
The Mets have been highly criticized for their failure to honor their history, the Jackie Robinson rotunda is a striking way to enter the stadium but it is a bit much for many Mets fans. I once suggested calling it the Shea rotunda ( since he's the founding father of the team) with the Jackie Robinson Memorial and making the rotunda a little more of a mix between the Mets and Jackie. While I love the new stadium, it was a bit stark at first and they have done a good job of catching up but as the Mets always seem to be doing they came off as reactionary. After this failed season I think something they could do to take a more proactive approach to next season, aside from the actual team they put on the field is to do a better job embracing their history. I'm pretty strict on the numbers I would retire, but there are three players who were the Mets during their time with the team and in my opinion, no one should ever wear those numbers again...#16 Dwight Gooden#18 Daryl Strawberry#31...

Mets Misplayed Church
2008-06-10 03:02:00
The Mets have finally placed Ryan Church on the DL with post concussion syndrome. To start the season many said "where would this team be without Church" and after the Padres series we might be seeing where this club is at. But the Mets look bad in all of this, after his second concussion in a few months they look like they were willing to trade wins for a players well being. It should be an automatic trip to the DL after the first concussion. It was quite obvious that Church wasn't 100% in the last game he played in and it shouldn't have taken this long for the team to finally make a move. I don't blame Church in fact I like his gritty attitude, it's the club who should step in and act responsibly because in the long run that's whats best for the team. Don't expect to see any new faces to replace him, they'll probably stick with the same bench and add Alou....Church suffered his second concussion in 11 weeks in a collision with Atlanta’s Yunel Escobar on May 20. That he’...
Bad teams find ways to lose
2008-06-09 03:29:00
I thought for the longest time that Willie Randolph was to blame for last year's collapse and the slow start to this year, I believed that this team was too good to be playing this bad and it's the manager who is responsible for getting the most out of his players. But after watching the Mets get swept this weekend by the San Diego Padres I was reminded of an old baseball adage, bad teams find ways to lose. Each night someone stepped up to find a way to lose and it's been that way for 32 games of this season. There isn't one aspect of this team that has been consistent throughout the year, whether it's the lack of clutch hitting, base running blunders, costly fielding errors or inconsistent starters and relievers for more losses then wins someone on this team steps up to lose a game. I'm sadly coming to the realization that this team isn't as good as I thought it was, they may not be under achieving they just might not be that good. If this team keeps losing like this maybe we...

Mets sign an outfielder
2008-06-08 17:40:00
Adam Rubin of the Daily News reports (bottom in El Duque section) that the Mets have signed OF John Rodriguez. The 30 y/o left handed outfielder was a career minor leaguer until he finally made the majors with the Cardinals in 2005, in approx. 350 ABs over two seasons (2005-2006) Rodriguez hit .298. Can't say that I remember him but he did enough to make the Cardinals WS roster in 2006. He was back in the minors for 2007 and this year after being released by St. Louis he was pick-up by the Rays. After not making the team out of spring training he was released on June second. The Mets have assigned him to New Orleans, he is known for his bat and his defense isn't the best but is considered a RF so he must have an arm. Either the Mets are bringing someone up and need him for depth or despite the numbers they don't have faith in who they have and Rodriguez will be on the fast track.........Here's the report on him entering spring training with the Rays.....John Rodriguez: Sign ed to...
Plays like Lenny and available.....
2008-06-08 03:42:00
The Phillies have made Chris Snelling available so they could activated Jayson Werth. Just a few years ago Snelling was a top prospect in the Mainers organization and compared to none other then Len Dykstra. The 26 y/o left handed outfielder has struggled to stay healthy, he is a lifetime .240 hitter but he still has quite an up side. If their not satisfied with their own AAAA outfielders, they could do a lot worse then Snelling......He was often compared to Lenny Dykstra due to his aggressive play and inability to stay healthy. source Wikipedia The Phillies outrighted Chris Snelling with the hope of sending him back to Lehigh Valley. They can't simply send him back to the minors, because he is out of options. He can either accept his assignment to the minors or become a free agent. source Philly.com

Church should be on the DL
2008-06-08 02:23:00
I didn't get on the Mets initially for their handling on Ryan Church , he's a gamer and he's going to try anything to get back in the line-up. I'm sure he convinced them that he was fine and there was nothing conclusive medically that would have prohibited him from playing. Then he admits to lingering effects and the doctors tell him to stay home for several days, that's when the club should have aired on the side of caution. But they let him return, in his last game it was clear that Church was out of it, both in the outfield and at the plate he had a dazed look on his face and appeared to be attempting to shake out the cob webs. Now Church has been told to sit a few days and the Mets still haven't DLed him, enough is enough this isn't an injury to play with Jim Edmonds lost a significant chunk of the 2006 season because he kept trying to rush back. The Mets have already made some questionable moves with the bench and now are playing even shorter. Church should be DLed ( in f...
The offense fails again and the Phillies begin to pull away
2008-06-07 06:26:00
As the Phillies beat their rival Braves on the last play of the game, the Mets lost their second straight game by the score of 2-1. The offense has gone back to playing uninspired, poorly executed and unable to preform in the clutch ball......The Padres have been near the bottom of the standings for the entire season and have been one of the worse scoring teams in the league but they somehow found enough offense to beat us two games in a row. It wasn't their pitchers either Banks and Wolf can hardly be considered top level pitchers, Mike Pelfrey and Johan Santana should get wins against the Pads when they hold them to two runs. It wasn't that they didn't have opportunities tonight, two innings in a row they had bases loaded with one out and came away with only one run. Sure you could point to David Wright's long fly ball in which he was robbed of an extra base hit, scoring multiple runners but a tremendous play by center fielder recorded an out and turned it into a sac fly but t...

The bench is poorly constructed
2008-06-06 21:48:00
It might make sense for Abraham Nunez to be recalled if the team is concerned about getting Wright and Reyes time off. I can understand how Willie wouldn't have faith in using Tatis or Easely at either spot, Easley tried to fill in at short and showed very little range. Both are on the team for veteran leadership and their bats. Nunez is an excellent infielder and has at least hit .240, Ahern is younger and just as good defensively but can't hit a lick."We've been talking about that, but he says he feels great," Randolph said. "We'll try to find a spot here and there. If I really feel like he's struggling, then I'll give him a day off." source NY PostBut even if you can justify Nunez that still doesn't mean the bench has been assembled properly. There is absolutely no reason for the Mets to be carrying three catchers, I understand the concept , it allows the team to use one catcher as a pinch hitter but Willie has never shown any interest in the idea. There have been several ...

Sickel's - Mets got a sleeper
2008-06-06 18:19:00
Minor league guru John Sickel's at Minor League Ball says that the Mets may have gotten a sleeper in the draft. While most are looking at Davis and Havens ( for good reason), Sickel's likes the Mets fifth round pick of Lefthanded hitting catcher Dock Doyle. If the kid is a decent catcher maybe Havens will be left at 2B, since he didn't sound to keen about the idea of catching......Mets fifth round pick Dock Doyle, a catcher from Coastal Carolina, looks like a sleeper to me and was one of my favorite Shadow Draft candidates. I'm less impressed with Mets fourth round pick Sean Ratliff, out of Stanford. He's got great power but the extremely high strikeout rate worries me. source Minor league Ball

Slow hook on Show and no offense
2008-06-06 07:13:00
The best thing that can be said about Mike Pelfrey was that he limited the damage, yes; Pelfrey allowed only one run over six innings but tells only half the story. Pelfrey was constantly in trouble and against a week hitting, last place team he was able to get lucky. Pelfrey had absolutely no control of his slider and once he had runners on base he wouldn't throw the change-up. Pelfrey allowed eight hits, three walks and only struck out one. The relievers continued the struggles; Feliciano, Smith and Sanchez all pitched with multiple runners on and were also lucky enough to get out of jams. With a tie score Schoenewies came in, in the bottom of the ninth and clearly didn't have it again. For whatever reason Willie stuck with him in which he loaded the bases on two walks, a single and allowed the winning run by hitting the batter. After the walk I would have gone to Wagner and hoped he could get two innings and take my lumps if my closer couldn't. But Willie had his typical slow ...

They Recalled who.....Nunez ?
2008-06-06 02:25:00
The Mets sent down Nick Evans today, the move doesn't come as a surprise as Evans looked clearly over matched at this early stage in his career. Like I said before I'm sure the experience will serve as incentive to not only Evans but all the young players in AA who hear the stories about "The Show". What is more of a surprise is who he was replaced by, they chose to re-called recently signed Abraham Nunez. The slick fielding infielder has been struggling at the plate in AAA, the Brewers released him after he hit only .210 in Nashville and so far with the Zeph's he was hitting .133. The Mets must be comfortable with Tatis as a left fielder with Endy being the defensive replacement. That leaves Easley as the bench infielder and they wanted a defensive replacement. If your looking for an all glove no bat, Ahern has never come close to Nunez's lifetime .247 BA so it makes sense from that aspect. I still don't understand why one of Feliciano, Aguila or Pascucci weren't recalled. I ...

Ollie on a short leash... Is Texas interested....
2008-06-04 17:13:00
John Delcos has a great piece on Oliver Perez and his struggles to find his control. After his one out start Willie Randolph really appear exasperated with the inconsistent pitcher, in case you missed his comments check them out at Metsblog. In Delcos' column he quotes Willie responding to a question, in regard to pulling Perez from the rotation. While he denies the idea, it does sound like Ollie is on a shorter leash as Willie ends his response with the ominous "yet".He also said his patience has limits. So far, pulling Perez from the rotation is not an option."We haven't gotten to that point, yet," Randolph said. source Lo Hud JournalLater in the same article Guy Conti discusses Ollie's arm angle and delivery..."That's why his velocity is off," bullpen coach Guy Conti said. "He has to repeat his delivery, and he's not."In addition to Perez's varying arm slots, Conti said the pitcher is also moving his head. Conti noted Pedro Martinez as an example. "You could place a cup of ...

Pedro was great last night
2008-06-04 15:59:00
It was great to have Pedro Martinez back on the mound last night, I said going into the game that if he could go five innings, in which he allowed three runs I'd take it. Martinez struggled early but then settled down into a nice groove, after a long top of the fourth inning, he came back out and it was clear that the cold San Francisco night had him a bit rusty. After giving up two runs he got out of the inning and could have left the game with the team leading by six runs. But Pedro took the mound in the sixth and quickly put two on, his best pitching of the night came in the sixth when his pitch count was around 100 and he found something extra good to finish off the inning. In the sixth Pedro showed that swagger, that he wasn't going to be denied finishing the inning on a successful note. Despite being a pitcher Pedro adds element to this team, an electricity and swagger, its a mix of playful glee and a competitive gun slinger. Hopefully, Pedro can stay healthy because he real...

Why must you tease us...Alou
2008-06-04 15:31:00
It's seems like Moises Alou shows up for a few weeks, beats the ball to a pulp and then disappears. Alou looks so good when he's here that Omar seems reluctant to bring in another outfielder and keeps us fans hoping for a speedy return. But the all or nothing, forty something Alou is brittle, to say the least and is very slow to recover. His roster spot has been held by AA player Nick Evans who aside from his first game is completely over matched. The saving grace for Evans has been that he wasn't going to be here long, if Alou wasn't returning on time then a true outfielder with a quality bat should be filling the spot. So Alou joined the team on the road trip and is eligible to return on thur., all indications were that he would be playing Friday. But wait, not so fast; Alou over did it on Sunday and either suffered a set back or just didn't realize he wasn't ready yet. Now he's 50/50 to return at all during this road trip........Moises Alou said yesterday that a return dur...
Why do they insist on carrying three catchers
2008-06-04 15:09:00
Raul Casanova was placed on Bereavement leave and before saying anything about baseball, my condolences to him and his family. While Casanova is away from the team he will be replaced by Robinson Cancel. The Mets appear to be fixated on carrying three catchers even though it's an unnecessary roster spot. As I've said before Willie insist using his catchers regularly as pinch hitters and when they are there a liability on the base path due to their lack of speed. Granted Cancel played some 1B and LF but other then an emergency situation I wouldn't be comfortable putting him out there. The Mets have the three outfielders in New Orleans and any of them would have made more sense to call up.The Mets announced after Tuesday night's 9-6 win over the Giants here that Robinson Cancel is being recalled to replace Raul Casanova for the next three days source NY Post

Ollie is consistent.....Bad that is.....
2008-06-04 03:06:00
The statement that Oliver Perez is inconsistent and you never know what your going to get from start to start is no longer true. That may have been the case last year but this year a good performance is an aberration. I'm personally tired of hearing that he has great stuff and it's just a matter of getting him consistent. Ollie is a tease and those spectacular moments are fleeting. The problem isn't in his arm or delivery it's in his head, I don't think he has the make-up to be a long term successful major league pitcher. Looking strictly at the numbers it's hard to argue that he's been anything but bad......If the gold standard is six innings of three runs or less ( which I think is one run too many and an inning short... 7/2) then in 12 appearances Ollie has produced three quality starts ( 4/2, 5/11, 5/18). In those three games only one of them was past the sixth when he went 7.2 innings against the Yanks. In only two other games did he complete the sixth inning and in both...
