Another 1B on waivers
2008-05-09 07:28:00 Just as there has been clamouring for Scott Hatteburg I'm sure some will be interested in Ben Broussard. The Rangers have DFA Broussard a 31 y/o left handed 1B with limited experience in the outfield who is hitting a mere .159. Broussard came up with the Indians and at his peak in 2006 when he was hitting .321 they traded him to Seattle. He struggled in Seattle after the trade but in his second year he hit .275. It was thought that Broussard needed a change of scenery which provoked the trade to Texas but that appears to have had a devastating effect on his career. With a big contract and a slumping bat it would be tough to convince me that he is player we need to obtain...... Evan Grant's article from late last night implies that the Rangers could designate first baseman Ben Broussard when Marlon Byrd returns from the DL next week. Broussard has been pushed to the bench following 89 ugly plate appearances. He's earning $3.85MM this year. source MLBTR
Arms race; Ollie, Vargas and Armas......
2008-05-09 05:12:00 Well Scott Boras can compare him to Johan Santana and Sandy Coufax all he wants but the fact is Oliver Perez is battling Mike Pelfrey as the weakest link in the rotation. No, I didn't forget Nelson Figeruoa but it's pretty clear he's only holding down a spot until they can move him to the long-man role. In my opinion while Pelfrey hasn't been impressive, he's at least been consistent. You know what your getting; five innings of 3-5 run ball. But with Perez you have absolutely no idea what your going to get and it's always in the back of your mind that his very next pitch could start another monumental meltdown. Perez could easily be the second best pitcher in this rotation but he always seems to get in his own way. After watching Haren this week I was wonder if slowing down his delivery would help improve his mechanics, Haren's exaggeratedly slow new delivery was not only deceptive to the hitters but also kept him on target. To be honest I don't think it's mechanical wi... More About: Race , Arms , Armas , Ollie
Pagan day-to-day
2008-05-09 04:30:00 Good news for Angel Pagan , his MRI came back as a just contusion and he'll be listed as day-to-day. Pagan thought that as he dove into the stands for a foul ball he felt his shoulder dislocate and then pope back in place. Most believed he would end up on the disable list, so for it to have turned out to be so minor is a refreshing surprise. But is does force the team to make a tough decision this weekend. Castro and Wise are due back and if Pagan had gone on the DL both could have returned with no real impact on the team ( unless your Raul Casanova). Now Omar and Co. have to decide who will go to make room for Matt Wise, it clearly should be Jorge Sosa but will more then likely be Joe Smith. The just don't eat contracts and that's what would happen if they DFA Sosa, Smith has been a better pitcher but still has options. An MRI taken on Thursday revealed that Mets outfielder Angel Pagan has a contusion of his left shoulder, the result of his crashing into the stands on Wednesday...
Anderson should play 1B
2008-05-08 01:46:00 While watching today's game I realized two things, the team didn't miss a beat without Carlos Delgado in the line-up and Marlon Anderson changed the complexion of the club. You can tell Anderson isn't a natural first baseman but he's sound enough to make the routine play and it's refreshing to see someone hustling and busting their tale out there. What he lacks in fundamentals he makes up for with energy and Delgado's range isn't what it use to be, anyway. I noticed last time Marlon started at first that he was really aggressive and it seemed to rub off on the other infielders, I felt the same in watching today's game. With Anderson in the line-up the team plays more of a small ball, speed game and with a professional situation hitter like Marlon, he fits that style perfectly. Even though Delgado is much less of a homerun threat then he once was, the team still plays as if he was still knocking in 40 HRs and is much more of a stationary offense when he's in there. In ... Pagan's shoulder
2008-05-08 01:15:00 Angel Pagan got the start today in left field and immediately made a contribution, in the first inning Pagan raced to the stands and dove after a foul ball. He made a terrific catch but in doing so appeared to really bang his shoulder, when he contorted his body in an attempt to brace his fall. Pagan stayed in the game and went 1-2 with an RBI, but in the third he stole second going in head first which ended his day. He was seen throughout the first three innings attempting to stretch out the shoulder and when he it was described as shoulder tightness.Angel Pagan left today’s game with left shoulder tightness. He flipped into the stands down the left-field line catching Andre Ethier’s foul ball in the first, then laughed as he caught a glimpse on the scoreboard. Two innings later, Pagan stole second with a headfirst slide. But he was replaced by Endy Chavez for the bottom of the third. source Daily News
Wilpon likes Tex
2008-05-07 22:08:00 Jon Heyman reports that Mets owner Jeff Wilpon likes Mark Teixeira and should be in on the sweepstakes. Teixeira is clearly one of the best first basemen in the game and the free agent should get a huge payday at the end of the season. Heyman still sees the Yankees as the front runners for his services but as I posted last week, Posada's condition may impact their pursuit or at least that's what I'm hoping.....Mets owner Jeff Wilpon is said to be a Teixeira admirer for years, and Delgado's only chance to stay with the Mets (his option is for a more reasonable $12 million and the buyout is for $4 million) would be to beat last year's numbers, and that appears to be a long shot now. Tough fans at Shea already appear to have spoken with their boos for Delgado. Odds: Odds: 4-1. source SI.com
Something needs to change
2008-05-07 07:42:00 The Mets lost another game in shockingly similar form, it's as if this team is stuck in a re-make of Groundhog day and they just can't change their fortune. After an impressive series in Arizona against the team with the best record in the league, the Mets returned to a script that has the fans completely frustrated and based on how they're acting at Shea, losing their minds. Here's how it goes:Act 1 - The Mets take a small early leadAct 2- They have multiple opportunities to build on the lead and fail to do soAct 3- The starting pitcher is unable to hold the lead & can't go deep into a gameAct 4- There's a defensive bone headed play that opens the doorAct 5- The over used, over exposed and some that aren't that good, pen allows tack on runsAct 6- The offense gets completely shut downI can't stand the boo birds, I think we've totally lost home field advantage and are only making things worse. But I do understand where they're coming from, as this team has me completely ... More About: Change
Time to give Armas a shot
2008-05-06 16:45:00 Tony Armas Jr. has started in six games which would be the equivalent of spring training. The veteran signed a minor league deal at the end of the off-season just to get in a camp, it was said that if he didn't make the team he would opt out and become a free agent. But Armas never made it to camp due to visa issues and accepted his assignment to AAA. Armas has been very solid in New Orleans, while his record is only 1-2, he has an ERA of 2.78 and batters are only hitting .227 ( lefties .208). His K/BB ratio would be third on the team behind Wagner and Santana, at 4.40 ( SO 22/BB 5 ). Mainly a starter Armas has been used as a long reliever and late inning set-up man. Always considered to have good stuff, his biggest set back has been that he was a thrower and not a pitcher, making him subsceptible to the long ball and big innings. At 30 y/o and after a very bad year in Pitt., hopefully Armas has matured into a pitcher (he's only allowed 3 HRs). The team could carry 13 pitchers and... More About: Time , Shot , Give
Castro inching closer to returning -- Wooten cut
2008-05-06 15:29:00 I'm very skeptical of Ramon Castro , don't get me wrong he's a very good back-up catcher but he is a constant injury concern. Castro entered camp in very good shape this year compared to his recent past and still injured his hamstring. It seems like every time we get a positive report on him it's followed a day or two later with a set-back. Last night Castro caught a complete game and barring a set back could be schedule to join the team when they return to Shea.Ramon Castro caught nine innings for Class-A St. Lucie last night. He went 1-for-4 with a homer in a win over Lakeland. It was the first time Castro had caught a full game since his rehab stint began. source Star Ledger In other catching news veteran catcher Shawn Wooten was cut to make room in New Orleans for Molina when he was sent down. 36 y/o right handed catcher who also plays 1B and 3B, in five partial major league seasons has compiled lifetime BA of .272. Turnbow would be a MiLB only
2008-05-06 15:11:00 Newsday is also reporting the Mets have discussed Derrick Turnbow, there source says he would only be brought in if he accepted a minor league deal. Turnbow wants out of Milwaukee and there aren't many teams willing to give a roster spot to a guy with a 15 ERA. So there might be a chance he could be sold on the idea of coming to a contender, proving he can pitch or working out the issues and then coming up. I'm against having another reclamation project working out of the pen but I'm all for bringing arms into New Orleans.....The Mets have had internal discussions about reliever Derrick Turnbow, who was released by the Brewers, but nothing is imminent, a person familiar with the situation said. They also are unsure if he would accept a minor-league deal, which is all they would offer. source Newsday
Maddeningly Inconsistent
2008-05-06 06:54:00 The Mets lost tonight's game to the Dodgers by the score of 5-1 and the game was basically over in the first inning when Oliver Perez gave up two runs. Almost on cue as Gary Cohen finished saying that Perez had only given up one home run this season and LA at night is notoriously a pitchers park, Perez gave up his first of three home runs on the evening. While he only walked one early on, the very next hitter knock in a two run homer. Just to add insult to injury the last homer was the first major league home run for the Dodgers rookie 3B. So Perez lasted six innings while only walked two batters but he still found away to lose and I think I saw several players rolling their eyes. It might be time to consider making a move to the pen, not only does it appear Ollie has lost his confidence but seems like the team behind him has as well. Armas has great numbers in New Orleans and would be able to jump right into the rotation. But Ollie isn't the only one at fault for the loss, the off...
You wanted what, for Padilla !!!!
2008-05-06 00:02:00 Apparently the Mets looked into Texas Rangers starting pitcher Vincente Padilla during the off-season. Padilla is the number two pitcher in the Rangers rotation, but on most teams he would be more of a 4-5 starter. He currently has a record of 3-2 (7 starts) with an ERA of 3.50 his BB/SO 16/25. Padilla spent six years with the Phillies and had two back-to-back 14 win seasons with an under 4 ERA. He has a high 90s fastball that's complimented with a nasty curveball, but he has control issues and can be flustered. The 30 y/o one time all-star (2002) has had his share of controversy; he refuses to speak to the media, has been known to head-hunt and after being arrested for DUI made some Mel Gibson-esque comments. The Rangers wanted Pelfrey, Heilman and Guerra for Padilla even as the starting point Omar should have hung-up the phone, obviously they have over valued their pitcher. Nolan Ryan is now in charge of the Rangers and has been rumored to be on the verge of a fire sale. Padilla ... More About: Wanted
Talk of Turnbow
2008-05-05 17:11:00 John Delcos at Lo Hud Journal is reporting that the Mets are discussing acquiring Derrick Turnbow. The 2006 All-Star and former Brewers closer is a mere shell of himself. The brewers placed the struggling reliever on waivers Friday, not only is he having a hard time pitching but is unhappy with his situation in Milwaukee.I just don't see how he would be a good fit here, the Mets already have one former dominant reliever struggling and they hardly have the time to baby sit another reclamation project. Turnbow is closer to the end of the game with the Brewers with Gagne blowing saves regularly then he would be behind Wagner, Sanchez and Feliciano. Prior to being placed on waivers Turnbow was 0-1 with a 15.63 ERA. The Mets are discussing whether to sign reliever Derrick Turnbow, recently designated for assignment by the Milwaukee Brewers source Lo Hud journal Hat tip to Metsblog More About: Talk
Where is Wise and who goes.....
2008-05-05 15:43:00 Matt Wise was rumored to rejoin the club this week during the West coast trip, but instead Wise was in Port St. Lucie pitching two solid innings in a minor league game. The club is allowed 30 days to rehab a pitcher in the minor leagues and they are clearly taking all thirty days. This is no reflection on Wise but they just can't figure out who to send down. The youngster Joe Smith could go but he is pitching very well and is the only ground ball pitcher in the pen, which is something you need in the late innings. Jorge Sosa has been so erratic he buckles knees at times with the drastic change between his fastball and off-speed stuff, but then gets rocked when he falls in love with his off-speed stuff. Sosa is very similar to Mota in that he seems to love making hitters look stupid with his off-speed pitches and shrugs off Casanova's calls for the fastball, this last series maybe to see how Schneider handles him.Mets Today brought up an interesting idea, which would be to have Aar...
Pascucci off to a hot start
2008-05-05 05:52:00 Newly acquired Valentino Pascucci is off to a very good start. Well it's only been five games but he must be making quite an impression in New Orleans. The 29 y/o right handed 1B/OF is hitting .333 with a .667 SLg. and .445 OBP. Pascucci has already hit a HR, 3 doubles and 3 RBIs. The question becomes whether he can produce on a major league level and how bad is his defense. As Angel Pagan's numbers cont. to tumble and Alou plays more, Pascucci could be an alternative for the bench...... More About: Start
Recapping the series in Az
2008-05-05 04:33:00 I had a very busy weekend but it was such a significant series that I thought it was important to at least recap the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. After their pathetic performance against the Pirates in which they lost 13-1 and had lost series to payoff caliber teams like the Brewers and Cubs many Mets fans were concerned that the team just didn't measure up. But it's understandable for fans to be concerned; there's only one regular hitting over .300 (Church), the rotation rarely makes it past the fifth and the entire bullpen walks a tightrope, seemingly on the edge of imploding at any moment. So entering the weekend series against the team with the best record in the league, with the hottest offense and the top three pitchers in the league many fans were white knuckling their remote controls.Well the Mets answered the call, they faced all three of the DBacks top three pitchers and not only won the series but aside from the eighth inning of the middle game went toe to ... Will Posada effect Teixeira
2008-05-04 22:32:00 I'm not sure whether the Yankees finances have changed or the younger generations has changed philosophies but don't let them fool you, money was just as much a consideration as Phil Hughes was in deciding to not go after Johan Santana. With that in mind the Yankees invested 52.4 million over four years into 36 y/o catcher Jorge Posada . While I didn't think it was a bad contract Posada was just too much of a Yankee for me to be interested, but at 36 y/o the Yankees knew he would have to spend time at 1B and DH. Posada now has a shoulder injury that is effecting his ability to throw, as a catcher that's essential, just ask Mike Piazza. Posada has decided to forgo surgery because he would lose half a season and his best tool, hitting isn't effected by the injury. Some are beginning to speculate that Posada will need to spend a lot more time at first-base then it was first thought when the contract was signed. The biggest free agent this up coming off-season will be 1B Mark Teixei... More About: Effect
Returning Players
2008-05-03 02:33:00 Moises Alou will be in tonight's line-up and bat fifth behind Carlos Beltran. Ryan Church will be hitting second with Castillo hitting eighth, the Mets are 5-0 with Church in the two hole. Brian Schneider is with the team but his situation isn't as clear, Schneider says he could be an emergency catcher but is not ready to start. The Mets can either DL Schneider which would be until next Friday with retro time or if they're comfortable with his emergency status only then they can send down Molina. With Alou returning somebody has to be removed from the active roster, one option that hasn't been discussed is that they can keep Molina and DFA a reliever since one will be going down when Wise returns......Alou has not played in a major-league game since March 6 due to hernia surgery, and Willie Randolph indicated the 41-year-old might not play the entire game tonight. Zito needs Peterson
2008-05-02 05:20:00 In what will go down as one of the worst contracts, if not the worst; Barry Zito is now the most expensive middle reliever in the league. In Jayson Stark's latest column he takes a look at the plight of Zito and what can be done to resolve the situation. Speaking with scouts and other major league sources the only way the Giants can move him is if they eat 80 % of his contract. When asked if Zito can rebound one source said only if he was re-united with Rick Peterson . Unless Peterson is moving on I can't see these two re-uniting, can you image laid-back, sensitive Zito dealing with Shea the way it's been this year. Although, former mets hitting coach Rick Downs was seen by SNY Kevin Berkhardt in the stands this week as a Giants scout.........So can Zito ever get straightened out? We surveyed a half-dozen scouts and executives, and we found only one who thought he could. And that was a scout who said his only hope was to get reunited with Rick Peterson, "the only [pitching coach] ...

Should Ollie be Tradebait
2008-05-01 20:08:00 No this isn't some frustrated, hysterical post by a panicked Mets fan after an awful performance by a starting pitcher who looked dreadful against one of the worst teams in the league. Whether you agree with it or not, this is a carefully thought out idea of getting the most from what you have. We clearly have offensive holes that need to be filled and don't have the chips in the farm system to fill them. The biggest question is how much can Pedro be relied upon when he returns and can Tony Armas Jr. or Claudio Vargas be counted on in the back end of the rotation. There is no questioning Oliver Perez's talent, he has the potential to be a top level starter. But as we've all learned Perez is consistently inconsistent, it's not just the fans who are frustrated with him but his own teammates have grown tired of his inconsistency. The most frustrating part with Perez is that you have no idea what to expect, with a mediocre pitcher you go in knowing either the offense is winning this... More About: Ollie
Is Pagan vunerable
2008-05-01 18:27:00 Angel Pagan did a great job in earning himself a roster spot in spring training and got off to a really hot start to begin the season. But just as Willie predicted in regards to Pagan, he'll come back down to earth and Angel has done so."He's still a nice player, but let's not get crazy," Randolph said. "I hope he stays this way all year long. But he came in here as our fourth outfielder, and when your backup guys come in and really do a job for you, you love that kind of thing." source Newsday 4/15/08When your hitting over .400 and knocking in a run a game, people forget that you misplay a ball and the team loses a tight game with Johan Santana on the mound. But when you play once a week and are only hitting .278, when a ball bounces off the side of your mitt in a five run inning people notice that. With Alou returning and Endy's legs looking healthy, Pagan is automatically relegated to the fifth outfielders role. If Pagan struggles to hit or can't be considered a defensive re...
Did Sosa pitch his way out of the pen
2008-05-01 06:47:00 It seems like Jorge Sosa is trying to make it easy on the team when they have to decide who needs to be sent down to make room for Matt Wise. After Tues. game when Sosa was able to hold down a tie score in extra innings to give the team a chance to win, I could see them justifying keeping him instead of Joe Smith. But Sosa came back today and got knocked around just like he's been all season. Sosa gave up five runs (one earned run) on four hits in one inning of work. He has an ERA of 7.02 in 14 gms ( 16.2 innings) allowing 19 runs ( 13 earned) four of which are homeruns ( two grand slams) with a BB/SO ratio of 8/10. Getting rocked by one of the teams with the worst records in the league might have been just enough for Omar to stop worrying about the 2 million dollars in guaranteed money. If it came down to strictly pitching, there's no question that the spot would be Joe Smith's. In 13 games ( 11.2 innings) Smith has an ERA of 3.09 only allowing 5 runs ( 4 earned) with a BB/SO of... Clark doesn't retire
2008-05-01 05:46:00 It was rumored that Brady Clark would retire after being re-assigned to New Orleans. Clark was barely used in his short stint with the Mets and really got himself in hot water by getting called out at the plate. Clark must have realized that the team would need a sixth outfielder at some point in the season because he agreed to accept the assignment.Brady Clark, who lost his roster spot when the Mets added Gustavo Molina, reversed course and decided he’ll report to Triple-A New Orleans rather than retire. Leg injury for Castro
2008-05-01 04:50:00 This off-season when many said that Ramon Castro should be given the full-time catchers position, I was completely against it because Castro can't stay healthy. Well he didn't make it out of spring training, had a set back on rehab assignment and now has injured himself again playing in a minor league game. Castro is a great right handed bat and seems to get along with everyone on the team, it's a shame he can't stay healthy. If the club was concerned with Castro's health then the Chad Moeller rumors would make sense, since Casanova and Molina haven't really established themselves.....Yesterday I posted a report from George King of the NY Post that recently DFA’d Yankee catcher Chad Moeller might draw some interest from the Mets. Mets sign a minor league 1B/OF

Wilkerson & Norton Available
2008-04-30 22:49:00 I'll say this again, I find 1B to be a glaring problem and needs to be addressed. At the least it looks like Carlos Delgado could use a platoon partner and if he continues to hit around .200 they'll have someone to replace him. So whenever I see a firstbase become available I'll pass him along, that doesn't mean I'm advocating for that player, unless I say it. Recently Dan Johnson ( made it through waivers to Rays AAA), Jason Botts, now Brad Wilkerson and Greg Norton have been available. I would take a flyer on Norton and while I know Wilkerson is an Omar guy I don't see him as a good fit.Greg Norton could be a pretty interesting pick-up. Norton is a 36 y/o switch hitter who can play the corner outfield and firstbase (he played 3B several years ago- stretch these days). He is a veteran of 12 seasons with a lifetime BA of .253 with a Slg .427. Who's out in the Pen
2008-04-30 18:28:00 I don't think there's anyway we won't see Matt Wise return to this club in the next few days and that's for two reasons. When Wise is on, he has a nasty change-up and he's been a good soldier. He has given the team wiggle room, by very quietly allowed them to audition the other pen arms while he's been on the DL. After all how long does it take to recover from a bruised forearm, well Wise has been rehabbing for almost a month and now the team has a much clearer picture of the pen. Either Wise allowed them to leave him on rehab assignment strictly out of his desire to be with this team or because he has had elbow issues in the past and agreed was the best approach. Joe Smith replaced Wise in the pen and has options, but the youngster has been extremely effective in the pen and I hope Omar learns from last years mistakes. Remember, Mota was kept because he was under contract and despite being ineffective, regardless of where they tried to use him he remained in the pen. The odd ...
