Maybe they're just not that good.....
2008-05-15 22:05:00
The Mets couldn't even muster one run against a kid who pitched his way out of the major leagues with an 11 ERA. They ended a home-stand with a record of 3-4 against two teams in the bottom of the their respective divisions and two of those wins, the decisive runs came on errors /misplayed balls. I've been looking all along to find the answer as to why this playoff caliber team just couldn't play better then .500 ball, since about this time last year. I've blamed the hitting coach (Downs), the manager, the GM, the owner for not spending more money and different players ( Delgado, Heilman, Mota, Ollie, Etc...) all along thinking they were just one or two pieces away from putting it all together. But maybe this is as good as it gets, this team that individually looks great on paper can't put it all together and they are just a .500 team. Maybe my level of frustration shouldn't be from their performance but that my expectations are simply too high. I'm looking for 2006 and that ...

No excuse to use Heilman
2008-05-15 16:00:00
So this morning I'm reading some justifications for why Willie used Heilman and sorry I'm not buying it. Don't get me wrong I fully understand why Matt Wise and Scott Schnoeneweis were unavailable. Schoeneweis had spent the day in the hospital with what turned out to be flu like symptoms and Wise just returning from the DL can't immediately be used on back to back days. But that still leaves Willie with three solid options in Smith, Feliciano and Sanchez. If any of these three relievers were brought in and failed to get the job done, then Willie wouldn't be getting second guessed so much today, it would be the teams offense. With that said, there's no way he should have been left in as long as he was, the minute Heilman exits the pen his back-up plan should be warming up. The excuse that no one was ready is as lame as using him in the first place, your worried about his ego ( which appears to be destroyed) then have Feliciano throwing so it looks like a match-up situation.Omar...

Why Heilman.... Willie what are you thinking
2008-05-15 04:11:00
This game should have never come down to the seventh inning, but it did. Once again the offense wasted a great performance by a starting pitcher, this time it was new comer Claudio Vargas who went 6 1/3 allowing just two runs on 3 hits, 4 BB while striking out six. Against a last place team once again this offense has struggled way more then it should, tonight it had a pathetic six hits and scored three runs. So far in this series against the last place Nationals who have the worst batting average in the league and have the lowest runs scored totals, the Mets have scored 13 while the Nationals 18.So onto tonight's game the teams entered the seventh inning tied 1-1, in the top of the inning Claudio Vargas struck out one and walk another batter. Willie decided to pull Vargas after he walked the batter and was at 100 pitches, I know some will second guess pulling Vargas but I have no problem with that decision. What I do have a problem with is bringing Aaron Heilman into a tied game, ...

Now Willie's on board with Delgado bunting....Finally
2008-05-14 22:36:00
I'm was very glad to see Carlos Delgado bunt against the shift, in fact I've been recommending it for over a year. In a post dated 1/27/07 called Keep em Honest in which I chronicled Delgado's struggles, the shift and said the following about bunting; My concern with Delgado making an effort to hit the ball the other way, is that in doing so it may have compounded his mechanical problems. It appeared that during the slump his hips were flying out which would indicate a player who's attempting to be in front of the ball to hit it in the opposite direction. The slump seemed to start with Delgado hitting the ball hard directly at defenders in the shift, and then escalated in a mechanical problem, possibly by trying to hit the other way. My solution to the problem is to force the defense out of the shift by keeping them honest. Just how do I propose to do this; the first time Reyes or Beltran are on third and they put the shift on bunt. Yes, bunt. I don't like to take such a powerfu...

Castillo could land on the DL
2008-05-14 21:25:00
Metsblog is reporting that the Buzz from Shea is that Luis Castillo could land on the DL. As I've said before I think the Mets are slow to put players on the DL especially veterans, if there's a respect of Castillo hurting himself worse or he's a detriment to the team then move him to the DL and bring someone in to fill the roster spot.the buzz from shea suggests Luis Castillo could still end up on the disabled list, though he continues to tell reporters that such a move is not necessary source Metsblog I'm not very comfortable with Easley's, Anderson's or Tatis' defense at second but their decent offensive players and will serve just fine to get us through the DL stint. I know many will be screaming about why we gave up Gotay, but his defense wasn't much better then the three above and as I predicted, that hot offensive start he had in '07' is gone, he's hitting .238 and hasn't had a hit against a left handed pitcher yet this season. Jose Valentin could be getting close...

Casanova makes it through waivers
2008-05-14 21:10:00
With so many injured catchers throughout the league, there was a risk that Raul Casanova would be claimed off waivers but the journeyman catcher made it through and will report to New Orleans. I'm glad we were able to keep him, as the back-up to the back-up Casanova did a decent job and with Castro on the team I'm sure he'll see more time with the big league team.Casanova, 35, will join the Zephyrs on Thursday after clearing waivers this week. The veteran catcher was designated for assignment by the Mets on Friday to make room for Ramon Castro, who had been activated from the disabled list. Casanova was hitting .283 in 46 at-bats for the Mets with one home run and six RBI. He is a .236 lifetime hitting in parts of nine major league seasons. source MiLB
All the right moves
2008-05-14 02:33:00
The Mets made several rosters moves today and in doing so, showed just how committed they are to winning now. I believe several of the moves were a true departure from past practices and put the best team on the field. They had been discussing sending Joe Smith down despite being one of the best relievers in the pen, but he was also the only pitcher with options. I don't bye the excuse that they liked the durability of Sosa, as I said last night just because he can pitch often doesn't mean he can provide quality appearances. I know Omar likes to keep as many options as possible and if he thought Sosa was salvageable then sending down Smith was the only way to guarantee keeping them both. But because of the ownership's long history of being frugal it was hard to believe that the decision wasn't just coming down to the fact that the Mets were on the hook for 2 mil. to Sosa, I still would like to know if he agreed to assignment prior to their final decision. Regardless of the proces...

Here's how I would resolve the rotation problem
2008-05-13 05:00:00
The Mets are in need of a starter for Wednesday's game against the Nationals. There has been some speculation that Adam Bostick will be brought up because he's already on the 40 man roster and has options. The Mets could move a reliever (Smith or Sosa), bring up Bostick for the day and then re-assign him to bring up Matt Wise. But Bostick has been pretty mediocre in AAA and I don't see how you can have confidence in him at the MLB level.Figgy's loss tonight served two purposes for the club, first of all it made Wednesday's game all that more important and showed that Figgy is at best a long reliever. Tonight was Figgy's fourth start in a row that couldn't be considered a quality start, which means only in his first two starts he made it six innings and/or allowed only three runs. Despite being a great feel good story, I just don't think he belongs in the rotation, it reminds me of Solar a few years ago with his heart felt story and then he pitched a CG but when it was all sa...

Why is it so hard to cut Sosa
2008-05-13 03:39:00
These are the type of games that are essential to a winning season, the Mets need to take 3 out of 4 from the Nats and beat-up on an inferior team, something they were unable to do at the end of last year. But it was the Nats that beat-up on the Mets, once again Jorge Sosa as the long-man allowed critical add-on runs that took the game from reasonably trailing to a blown out. The Mets had a chance to come back being down by only three runs to a Nationals team with a horrible bullpen, then Jorge Sosa came on and quickly gave up four runs. Sosa has an ERA of 7.06 and allowed 23 runs in 21 innings which has included four HRs two of which were grand slams.Matt Wise is ready to come off the disabled list but the team is using everyday of his 30 day rehab assignment to decide who he will replace. Wise has a nasty change-up and with Heilman struggling he would be a nice compliment to Sanchez late in a game, but Wise can also pitch two innings if needed. They went as far as to bring Wise in...

Castillo regardless of knees a good 2B
2008-05-11 22:26:00
I'm not sure why there's such animosity towards 2B Luis Castillo , I mean if it's about the contract then that's Omar's fault and if it's that he has balky knees, aren't there fans constantly complaining that Beltran doesn't play on sore knees. From the prospective of being a gamer and playing hurt, showing heart Castillo is the epitome of a competitor.Lets start with the contract, four years 25 mil. (6.25 mil. per year) in today's baseball isn't that big a contract. I agree for a 32 y/o with balky knees it seems a little long, two years with an option would have been more like it but allegedly the Astros were making a big push for Castillo. An extra year on a contract, that I'm not paying for isn't something to dislike a player over and at least now we have solidified second base for the first time in five years. Realistically Castillo will probably start for the next two years and then platoon in the third, I'm guessing the fourth will be paid by the insurance policy a...

Doubleheader was a microcosm of this team
2008-05-11 17:01:00
For those who don't understand why so many Mets fans are frustrated, they need to look no further then yesterdays doubleheader. With that said I can't stand the boo birds ( you know who you are) it doesn't motivate the players to perform, it's happening too quick and as frustrated as I've been I just don't get the purpose of taking away home field advantage. The Reds are one of the worst teams in the league and the pitching match-ups for the doubleheader completely favored us, so hoping for a sweep and taking our chances on Sunday against a tough rookie wasn't too much to ask. But for this team they seem allergic to sustained success, I think they could silence most of their critics if they could run off six in a row or 8 out of ten. Call it a playoff hangover, managerial decisions, an imperfect roster, lack of killer instinct or chemistry, whatever it is something keeps this team stuck playing 500 ball when in my opinion there much better then that. Game one of the doublehead...

Lugo minor injury
2008-05-10 19:55:00
With the state of the rotation, it's important to keep an eye on how the starters are doing in New Orleans. Omar usually gets veteran pitchers to take minor league deals by making gentleman's agreements, such as being the first ones to get called up as long as their pitching well. Because of this, I'm sure if we need starters the first two in line are Claudio Vargas and Tony Armas Jr. But the pitcher with the best numbers is Ruddy Lugo, he's 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA and has a K/BB ratio of 4.00 (BB 14/ SO 38). Ruddy the younger brother of Boston SS ( and often rumored to be an Omar Favorite) Julio Lugo, is a 27 y/o right handed pitcher with 102 major league relief appearances from 2006-2007 with the A's and Rays going 8-4 with a 4.39 ERA. In his last start on Wednesday night Lugo injured his hamstring and will miss his next start. Hopefully, it wont be one of those lingering injuries that effects his performance as it looks like Lugo could have a chance to contribute this year.Zephy...

Pedro progressing
2008-05-10 19:30:00
It's hard to believe that Pedro Martinez has become such a forgotten man in the make-up of this team. But Pedro has missed so much time over the past two years that it's understandable how he can't to counted on, anything he provides is an added bonus. If Pedro can come back, like he did in Sept. of last year then it would be like a trade deadline pick-up. While I'll take a believe it when I see it approach, it's good to hear he's making progress.......Pedro Martinez threw a combination bullpen/batting practice session (60 pitches) yesterday in Port St. Lucie, Fla., leaving New York Mets GM Omar Minaya "encouraged" with the right-hander's progress in his comeback from a strained left hamstring."It was a pretty good session. He threw all his pitches," Minaya said. sourcce NY Post
Catcher switch
2008-05-10 18:11:00
Last night before the rain out the Mets made an expected roster move when they DFA Raul Casanova and activated Ramon Castro. Hopefully, Casanova will make it through waivers and accept assignment to New Orleans. With Castro being such an injury risk it would be nice to keep his bat as a reserve, in 12 gms he's hitting .283 with a home run, two doubles and 6 RBIs."Raul did a tremendous job for us," manager Willie Randolph said. "He got some big hits for us, had a big game up in L.A., and had a home run here in New York. I just told him how much I appreciated his effort ... and hopefully, he can clear waivers and we can keep him and he'll be back, helping us win a championship." source The Star Ledger

Pascucci really making a name for himself in NO
2008-05-09 15:51:00
As I said in a previous post the Zephyrs received a solid pitching performance from Claudio Vargas. The veteran major league pitcher is hoping to prove he's worth a roster spot on the big league club and last night going seven scoreless innings of four hit ball won't hurt that cause. Especially when he did not walk a batter and struck out seven, just the type of control and length the rotation could use. I'm not on the bandwagon lets see if he can keep that up over 3-4 starts, but it's definitely a good sign. The Zephyrs won this pitchers duel 1-0 and that run came from Valentino Pascucci. The new comer is really making a name for himself, hitting .333 with 8 RBIs and 3 HRs in nine games. Last night he scored the only run of the game on a solo home run and currently has a Slg. pct. of .727. At the time of his acquisition Matt Cerrone at Metsblog posted the signing and several commenter's who have seen him play said his defense is atrocious, so he would be an all bat type of play...
Another 1B on waivers
2008-05-09 07:28:00
Just as there has been clamouring for Scott Hatteburg I'm sure some will be interested in Ben Broussard. The Rangers have DFA Broussard a 31 y/o left handed 1B with limited experience in the outfield who is hitting a mere .159. Broussard came up with the Indians and at his peak in 2006 when he was hitting .321 they traded him to Seattle. He struggled in Seattle after the trade but in his second year he hit .275. It was thought that Broussard needed a change of scenery which provoked the trade to Texas but that appears to have had a devastating effect on his career. With a big contract and a slumping bat it would be tough to convince me that he is player we need to obtain...... Evan Grant's article from late last night implies that the Rangers could designate first baseman Ben Broussard when Marlon Byrd returns from the DL next week. Broussard has been pushed to the bench following 89 ugly plate appearances. He's earning $3.85MM this year. source MLBTR
Arms race; Ollie, Vargas and Armas......
2008-05-09 05:12:00
Well Scott Boras can compare him to Johan Santana and Sandy Coufax all he wants but the fact is Oliver Perez is battling Mike Pelfrey as the weakest link in the rotation. No, I didn't forget Nelson Figeruoa but it's pretty clear he's only holding down a spot until they can move him to the long-man role. In my opinion while Pelfrey hasn't been impressive, he's at least been consistent. You know what your getting; five innings of 3-5 run ball. But with Perez you have absolutely no idea what your going to get and it's always in the back of your mind that his very next pitch could start another monumental meltdown. Perez could easily be the second best pitcher in this rotation but he always seems to get in his own way. After watching Haren this week I was wonder if slowing down his delivery would help improve his mechanics, Haren's exaggeratedly slow new delivery was not only deceptive to the hitters but also kept him on target. To be honest I don't think it's mechanical wi...

Pagan day-to-day
2008-05-09 04:30:00
Good news for Angel Pagan , his MRI came back as a just contusion and he'll be listed as day-to-day. Pagan thought that as he dove into the stands for a foul ball he felt his shoulder dislocate and then pope back in place. Most believed he would end up on the disable list, so for it to have turned out to be so minor is a refreshing surprise. But is does force the team to make a tough decision this weekend. Castro and Wise are due back and if Pagan had gone on the DL both could have returned with no real impact on the team ( unless your Raul Casanova). Now Omar and Co. have to decide who will go to make room for Matt Wise, it clearly should be Jorge Sosa but will more then likely be Joe Smith. The just don't eat contracts and that's what would happen if they DFA Sosa, Smith has been a better pitcher but still has options. An MRI taken on Thursday revealed that Mets outfielder Angel Pagan has a contusion of his left shoulder, the result of his crashing into the stands on Wednesday...
Anderson should play 1B
2008-05-08 01:46:00
While watching today's game I realized two things, the team didn't miss a beat without Carlos Delgado in the line-up and Marlon Anderson changed the complexion of the club. You can tell Anderson isn't a natural first baseman but he's sound enough to make the routine play and it's refreshing to see someone hustling and busting their tale out there. What he lacks in fundamentals he makes up for with energy and Delgado's range isn't what it use to be, anyway. I noticed last time Marlon started at first that he was really aggressive and it seemed to rub off on the other infielders, I felt the same in watching today's game. With Anderson in the line-up the team plays more of a small ball, speed game and with a professional situation hitter like Marlon, he fits that style perfectly. Even though Delgado is much less of a homerun threat then he once was, the team still plays as if he was still knocking in 40 HRs and is much more of a stationary offense when he's in there. In ...

Pagan's shoulder
2008-05-08 01:15:00
Angel Pagan got the start today in left field and immediately made a contribution, in the first inning Pagan raced to the stands and dove after a foul ball. He made a terrific catch but in doing so appeared to really bang his shoulder, when he contorted his body in an attempt to brace his fall. Pagan stayed in the game and went 1-2 with an RBI, but in the third he stole second going in head first which ended his day. He was seen throughout the first three innings attempting to stretch out the shoulder and when he it was described as shoulder tightness.Angel Pagan left today’s game with left shoulder tightness. He flipped into the stands down the left-field line catching Andre Ethier’s foul ball in the first, then laughed as he caught a glimpse on the scoreboard. Two innings later, Pagan stole second with a headfirst slide. But he was replaced by Endy Chavez for the bottom of the third. source Daily News
Wilpon likes Tex
2008-05-07 22:08:00
Jon Heyman reports that Mets owner Jeff Wilpon likes Mark Teixeira and should be in on the sweepstakes. Teixeira is clearly one of the best first basemen in the game and the free agent should get a huge payday at the end of the season. Heyman still sees the Yankees as the front runners for his services but as I posted last week, Posada's condition may impact their pursuit or at least that's what I'm hoping.....Mets owner Jeff Wilpon is said to be a Teixeira admirer for years, and Delgado's only chance to stay with the Mets (his option is for a more reasonable $12 million and the buyout is for $4 million) would be to beat last year's numbers, and that appears to be a long shot now. Tough fans at Shea already appear to have spoken with their boos for Delgado. Odds: Odds: 4-1. source SI.com
Something needs to change
2008-05-07 07:42:00
The Mets lost another game in shockingly similar form, it's as if this team is stuck in a re-make of Groundhog day and they just can't change their fortune. After an impressive series in Arizona against the team with the best record in the league, the Mets returned to a script that has the fans completely frustrated and based on how they're acting at Shea, losing their minds. Here's how it goes:Act 1 - The Mets take a small early leadAct 2- They have multiple opportunities to build on the lead and fail to do soAct 3- The starting pitcher is unable to hold the lead & can't go deep into a gameAct 4- There's a defensive bone headed play that opens the doorAct 5- The over used, over exposed and some that aren't that good, pen allows tack on runsAct 6- The offense gets completely shut downI can't stand the boo birds, I think we've totally lost home field advantage and are only making things worse. But I do understand where they're coming from, as this team has me completely ...

Time to give Armas a shot
2008-05-06 16:45:00
Tony Armas Jr. has started in six games which would be the equivalent of spring training. The veteran signed a minor league deal at the end of the off-season just to get in a camp, it was said that if he didn't make the team he would opt out and become a free agent. But Armas never made it to camp due to visa issues and accepted his assignment to AAA. Armas has been very solid in New Orleans, while his record is only 1-2, he has an ERA of 2.78 and batters are only hitting .227 ( lefties .208). His K/BB ratio would be third on the team behind Wagner and Santana, at 4.40 ( SO 22/BB 5 ). Mainly a starter Armas has been used as a long reliever and late inning set-up man. Always considered to have good stuff, his biggest set back has been that he was a thrower and not a pitcher, making him subsceptible to the long ball and big innings. At 30 y/o and after a very bad year in Pitt., hopefully Armas has matured into a pitcher (he's only allowed 3 HRs). The team could carry 13 pitchers and...

Castro inching closer to returning -- Wooten cut
2008-05-06 15:29:00
I'm very skeptical of Ramon Castro , don't get me wrong he's a very good back-up catcher but he is a constant injury concern. Castro entered camp in very good shape this year compared to his recent past and still injured his hamstring. It seems like every time we get a positive report on him it's followed a day or two later with a set-back. Last night Castro caught a complete game and barring a set back could be schedule to join the team when they return to Shea.Ramon Castro caught nine innings for Class-A St. Lucie last night. He went 1-for-4 with a homer in a win over Lakeland. It was the first time Castro had caught a full game since his rehab stint began. source Star Ledger In other catching news veteran catcher Shawn Wooten was cut to make room in New Orleans for Molina when he was sent down. 36 y/o right handed catcher who also plays 1B and 3B, in five partial major league seasons has compiled lifetime BA of .272. Turnbow would be a MiLB only
2008-05-06 15:11:00
Newsday is also reporting the Mets have discussed Derrick Turnbow, there source says he would only be brought in if he accepted a minor league deal. Turnbow wants out of Milwaukee and there aren't many teams willing to give a roster spot to a guy with a 15 ERA. So there might be a chance he could be sold on the idea of coming to a contender, proving he can pitch or working out the issues and then coming up. I'm against having another reclamation project working out of the pen but I'm all for bringing arms into New Orleans.....The Mets have had internal discussions about reliever Derrick Turnbow, who was released by the Brewers, but nothing is imminent, a person familiar with the situation said. They also are unsure if he would accept a minor-league deal, which is all they would offer. source Newsday
Maddeningly Inconsistent
2008-05-06 06:54:00
The Mets lost tonight's game to the Dodgers by the score of 5-1 and the game was basically over in the first inning when Oliver Perez gave up two runs. Almost on cue as Gary Cohen finished saying that Perez had only given up one home run this season and LA at night is notoriously a pitchers park, Perez gave up his first of three home runs on the evening. While he only walked one early on, the very next hitter knock in a two run homer. Just to add insult to injury the last homer was the first major league home run for the Dodgers rookie 3B. So Perez lasted six innings while only walked two batters but he still found away to lose and I think I saw several players rolling their eyes. It might be time to consider making a move to the pen, not only does it appear Ollie has lost his confidence but seems like the team behind him has as well. Armas has great numbers in New Orleans and would be able to jump right into the rotation. But Ollie isn't the only one at fault for the loss, the off...
You wanted what, for Padilla !!!!
2008-05-06 00:02:00
Apparently the Mets looked into Texas Rangers starting pitcher Vincente Padilla during the off-season. Padilla is the number two pitcher in the Rangers rotation, but on most teams he would be more of a 4-5 starter. He currently has a record of 3-2 (7 starts) with an ERA of 3.50 his BB/SO 16/25. Padilla spent six years with the Phillies and had two back-to-back 14 win seasons with an under 4 ERA. He has a high 90s fastball that's complimented with a nasty curveball, but he has control issues and can be flustered. The 30 y/o one time all-star (2002) has had his share of controversy; he refuses to speak to the media, has been known to head-hunt and after being arrested for DUI made some Mel Gibson-esque comments. The Rangers wanted Pelfrey, Heilman and Guerra for Padilla even as the starting point Omar should have hung-up the phone, obviously they have over valued their pitcher. Nolan Ryan is now in charge of the Rangers and has been rumored to be on the verge of a fire sale. Padilla ...

Talk of Turnbow
2008-05-05 17:11:00
John Delcos at Lo Hud Journal is reporting that the Mets are discussing acquiring Derrick Turnbow. The 2006 All-Star and former Brewers closer is a mere shell of himself. The brewers placed the struggling reliever on waivers Friday, not only is he having a hard time pitching but is unhappy with his situation in Milwaukee.I just don't see how he would be a good fit here, the Mets already have one former dominant reliever struggling and they hardly have the time to baby sit another reclamation project. Turnbow is closer to the end of the game with the Brewers with Gagne blowing saves regularly then he would be behind Wagner, Sanchez and Feliciano. Prior to being placed on waivers Turnbow was 0-1 with a 15.63 ERA. The Mets are discussing whether to sign reliever Derrick Turnbow, recently designated for assignment by the Milwaukee Brewers source Lo Hud journal Hat tip to Metsblog

Where is Wise and who goes.....
2008-05-05 15:43:00
Matt Wise was rumored to rejoin the club this week during the West coast trip, but instead Wise was in Port St. Lucie pitching two solid innings in a minor league game. The club is allowed 30 days to rehab a pitcher in the minor leagues and they are clearly taking all thirty days. This is no reflection on Wise but they just can't figure out who to send down. The youngster Joe Smith could go but he is pitching very well and is the only ground ball pitcher in the pen, which is something you need in the late innings. Jorge Sosa has been so erratic he buckles knees at times with the drastic change between his fastball and off-speed stuff, but then gets rocked when he falls in love with his off-speed stuff. Sosa is very similar to Mota in that he seems to love making hitters look stupid with his off-speed pitches and shrugs off Casanova's calls for the fastball, this last series maybe to see how Schneider handles him.Mets Today brought up an interesting idea, which would be to have Aar...
Pascucci off to a hot start
2008-05-05 05:52:00
Newly acquired Valentino Pascucci is off to a very good start. Well it's only been five games but he must be making quite an impression in New Orleans. The 29 y/o right handed 1B/OF is hitting .333 with a .667 SLg. and .445 OBP. Pascucci has already hit a HR, 3 doubles and 3 RBIs. The question becomes whether he can produce on a major league level and how bad is his defense. As Angel Pagan's numbers cont. to tumble and Alou plays more, Pascucci could be an alternative for the bench......
