Patriots Spying on the Jets? [J. Mark English]
2007-09-11 13:33:00 The Jets and the Pats really are fighting a cold war right now. Espionage is the only the latest in the continuing saga of bizarre tales of competitive spirit gone awry. This is from ESPN:NFL security confiscated a video camera and its tape from a New England Patriots employee on the team's sideline during Sunday's game against the Jets in a suspected spying incident, sources said. The camera and its tape were placed in a sealed box and forwarded to the league office for investigation, the sources said. "The rule is that no video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game," the league said in a statement from spokesman Greg Aiello. "Clubs have specifically been reminded in the past that the videotaping of an opponent's offensive or defensive signals on the sidelines is prohibited. "We are looking into whether the Patriots violated this rule."The Patriots' cameraman was suspected of aim... More About: English , New York Jets
Kevin Everett: Keep Him in Your Intentions [J. Mark English]
2007-09-11 05:09:00 This is from the Buffalo Bills website:It was eagerly anticipated news when the Bills provided an update on Kevin Everett Monday afternoon, following his game halting spine injury on the second half kickoff of Sunday's loss to Denver. But the update only gave a clearer picture as to the severity of what is still a potentially lethal injury, and the steps that were taken to give him the greatest chance for recovery. Everett suffered a fracture dislocation between the third and fourth cervical vertebra. So there was an injury to the cervical spine and cervical spinal cord. But the spinal cord was intact. There was disc material pushing on the cord and bone was applying pressure as well. "The vertebrae were out of alignment," said team orthopedist Dr. Andrew Cappuccino, who specializes in injuries of the spine. "The vertebrae of the spine line up like box cars of a train. The third cervical vertebra had translocated completely over the front of the fourth cervical vertebra causing a... More About: English , Mark , Mark English , Tiki Barber
Darth Federer? [J. Mark English]
2007-09-11 05:01:00 Just how good is Roger Federer , whom won his 12th grand slam yesterday? Sean Randall of the Tennis X Blog breaks down just what a phenomenal athlete this man has become: Roger Federer has never lost a match in his career in the all black Darth Vader look. After the US Open final today that will still be fact. Novak Djokovic has enjoyed a great US Open, with great wins over Radek Stepanek and David Ferrer, he?s also shown us his personal side with a pair of memorable impersonations Thursday evening. But today?s going to be too much for the 20-year-old Serb. While Federer will be comfortable in playing in front of 23,000 plus and in his 10th straight Slam final, this will be Novak?s first go round in a major title bout. The lack of a day off also hurts Novak. Fed?s used to it, not Novak. The heat could also play a role. Djokovic has had problems with conditions and injuries in the past, and even yesterday he looked somewhat sluggish at times in the heat and had to summon the trainer.... A Giant Infirmary [J. Mark English]
2007-09-11 04:56:00 Oh man, talk about a game of attrition for the New York Giant s . The Jints suffered so many injuries in the game last night against the Dallas Cowboys that their trainers were nearly performing triage on the field. This is the latest from the Giants website:Here are the results of this afternoon's MRIs on quarterback Eli Manning , defensive end Osi Umenyiora and running back Brandon Jacobs. Manning has a contusion to the right A-C joint. His status is day to day for this week's game against Green Bay. Umenyiora has an irritation to the lateral meniscus of his left knee. His status is also day to day and he will be re-evaluated later in the week. Jacobs sprained the MCL of his right knee. He will be evaluated on a week to week basis. The results of the MRI on cornerback Kevin Dockery's ankle were not available as of 5 p.m. today.http://img68.imageshack.us/my.php?i mage=amerlegendslogo5wj.gif More About: English , Mark
Pigskin Pick'em - Week 1 Results [EdMcGon]
2007-09-10 13:06:00 The first week's NFL results are in, as well as the results for our Pigskin Pick'em contest.Even with two games remaining to be played, David Stefanini has already got enough wins to claim victory in the first week (tonight's picks are shown after the weekly totals):David Stefanini - 9 (Bengals & 49ers)EdMcGon - 7 (Ravens & 49ers)Mike - 6 (Bengals & 49ers)J. Mark English - 4 (Bengals & Cards)Bill Barker - 4 (Bengals & 49ers)I will be tracking correct picks for the entire season, so be sure to play when I post later this week.I must admit that my Browns over Steelers pick was a truly bad one, for which I received a ton of grief. I overestimated the Browns, mostly due to the fact the team played with a lot of heart last year, even when they were losing games. On the other hand, I underestimated the Steelers because of Tomlin installing a new playbook. If you look at the Steelers on paper, they simply outclass the Browns as far as talent. That said, I feel quite vindicate... More About: Results , Week , Result
NFL Uni Notes [J. Mark English]
2007-09-09 22:24:00 The "C" on the uniforms look kinda cheesy. I mean is the NFL trying to mimic the NHL? Why not just stitch up an "A" on the uniforms for the assistant captains as well!Notice the plethora of patches being worn by teams this year marking some sort of anniversary year? The Redskins, the Packers, and the Eagles so far have them on. I'm sure there are other teams as well, but I haven't watched every game yet. (And I won't be, but I'm just making a point...)The Jets wore their away whites at home today. Was that to make them cooler in the summer heat? Man, Mangini and Belichick really despise each other. The Chargers new uniforms look sleek and yet old school at the same time. I just wish they'd put the numbers on the helmets like when they used to wear the baby blue jersey.Oh and are the green dots on the back of the QB helmets really necessary? The green dot designate the player on the field that can communicate through a wireless device to the sideline. But we all know it... Tennis: Justine Henin Wins 2nd U.S. Open [J. Mark English]
2007-09-09 20:20:00 This is from Tennis .com:Psst. The name is Justine Henin . Get to know her.Might just be one of the greatest tennis players ever. Is certainly the undisputed No. 1 at the moment. As of Saturday night, she owns two U.S. Open championships and seven Grand Slam titles overall. So let's get that correct. Everybody now: Justine Henin. Overwhelming No. 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-1, 6-3 in the final, the top-seeded Henin capped a dominating run through the U.S. Open in which she didn't drop a set and became the first woman to win a major title while beating both Williams sisters along the way. "This one is maybe the most important one. The quality I played in the last few matches has been amazing, and it's a great feeling, because I had a tough draw," said Henin, the 2003 Open champion. "I had a lot of things to prove to myself. Not to anyone else, but to myself. And I did it."Yet both times she conquered New York, someone got her name wrong during the postmatch trophy-and-check ceremony. Fo... More About: English , Mark
College Football Notes 9.9.07 [J. Mark English]
2007-09-09 20:00:00 Michigan & Notre Dame - Notre Dame lost an ugly game to Penn State, and Michigan was blown out at the Big House against Oregon. For the first time in history both teams are 0-2 in the same season. Its the first time since 1959 that Michigan has lost their first two games at home. Looks like its going to be a long season for these two storied collegiate football programs. At least we know that they both can't go the whole season with out a win since they play each other. Talk about mediocrity. Although, Notre Dame has an upshot in that freshman Clausen can only improve on his performance yesterday.Penn State - I admit that they have a good defense, and maybe the best linebacker corps in the nation, but their team is not the stuff of champions. Sorry A.J., but Penn State is not going anywhere this year based on their performance last night which was sluggish at best.LSU - #2 LSU crushed #9 Virginia Tech 48-7. Rick Ankiel Was Given HGH [David Stefanini]
2007-09-07 15:38:00 Rick Ankiel, who has been the feel good, comeback story of the past month or so, has now been linked to HGH. However, as of right now, it does not look like Ankiel did anything wrong. He was prescribed HGH by a Florida physician in 2004. HGH was not officially banned from MLB until 2005. Here is ESPN with more: The New York Daily News reported Friday that Ankiel received a 12-month supply of human growth hormone in 2004 from a Florida pharmacy that was part of a national illegal prescription drug-distribution operation, citing records its reporters saw. That Orlando outfit, Signature Pharmacy, has been implicated in a steroids investigation run by Albany County (N.Y.) District Attorney P. David Soares, which has resulted in 22 indictments and several Florida clinic raids. Ankiel's HGH prescriptions, including Saizen and Genotropin, were signed by Florida physician William Gogan, who provided them through a Palm Beach Gardens clinic called The Health and Rejuvenation Center, or THAR... Defending Champions Colts Romp over the Saints [J. Mark English]
2007-09-07 07:18:00 I thought the NFL was hoping for an age of parody. But after the Indianapolis Colts smothered the New Orleans Saints in the RCA Dome, the age of parody may have yet another dynasty on its hands. Peyton Manning has become the Tiger Woods of the NFL. There is no one even close to his ability as a quarterback, as a player, as a football mind. Its as if the head coach is the one playing QB, and we as fans are privileged to watch this guy demonstrate his magic. For more on tonights drubbing of the Saints, here is Jeff Rabjohns of IndyStar.com:Capping a day of city-wide festivities designed to celebrate the Super Bowl champions, the Colts rode a strong defense and second-half surge to open the 2007 NFL season by beating New Orleans 41-10 in front of a national television audience. A sellout crowd of 57,361 saw the Colts score 31 unanswered points in the second half to pull away from a 10-10 halftime tie.The defense that held the Bears without a touchdown in the final three quarters o... MLB Notes 9.6.07 [J. Mark English]
2007-09-07 04:10:00 On a night when the NFL begins anew, the baseball season is still heavy on our minds. As the Colts battle the Saints, lets look around at some of the big stories swirling around the Majors. Some bad news for the Mets...just as Carlos Delgado was finally starting to regain his swagger of years past, he finds himself injured, and will be missing the next 7-10 days due to a hip flexor. The Cardinal's Rich Ankiel continues his improbable resurrection as an every day outfielder, as opposed to a pitcher. The former wild man on the hill, has now become a wild man at the plate. Just read this: The Cardinals sent Mike Maroth to the mound on Thursday hoping that the left-hander could keep them in the game for a few innings. They learned again that with the way Rick Ankiel is swinging the bat, they may never be out of a game -- regardless of who is on the mound....Ankiel's shock-and-awe assault on the National League continued Thursday at Busch Stadium when he went 3-for-4, hit a pair of h... Pigskin Pick'em - NFL Week 1 Picks [EdMcGon]
2007-09-06 14:07:00 It's that time of year again! Time for the weekly Pigskin Pick'em, where the rules are simple:1. Pick the straight-up winners of all this weeks NFL games (excluding any Thursday games). Picks will be accepted in the comments section of the following websites: Politics and Pigskins, Ragged Thots, and American Legends. All picks must be posted by 1 pm Eastern Time on Sunday, or by the kickoff of the first NFL Saturday game on weeks when that happens.2. The winner gets...bragging rights! (you weren't expecting money, were you?)3. And new for this year: I will be keeping a running tally for the season, so the person who gets the most picks correct for the whole season, including the playoffs, gets...even BIGGER bragging rights! (and still no money)So to get the ball rolling, here are my picks (in red) for the first week:Denver Broncos at Buffalo Bills: While the Broncos are not a great road team, it's hard to go against them when they are playing the Bills.Pittsburgh Steelers at Cle... Benoit Had Brain Damage [David Stefanini]
2007-09-06 01:39:00 This from the Associated Press:Pro wrestler Chris Benoit suffered head trauma from his years in the ring that could help explain why he killed his wife, son and himself, a doctor who studied his brain said Wednesday. The analysis by doctors affiliated with the Sports Legacy Institute suggests that repeated concussions could have contributed to the killings at Benoit's suburban Atlanta home, though there was no way to know for sure. "Whether it is the sole factor, I believe, is speculation, and I will not go there," said Dr. Robert Cantu, a member of the Waltham, Mass.-based institute, which researches the long-term effects of concussions. The level of brain damage Benoit had could have caused depression and irrational behavior, said Cantu.http://img68.imageshack.us/my.php?i mage=amerlegendslogo5wj.gif More About: David , Brain , Damage
Yanks Sweep Sox, Then Lose Momentum [Addison Quale]
2007-09-04 20:42:00 What a wild week for the Bosox and Yankee rivalry it has been. After inching back into control last week, the Sox came to Yankee Stadium with a strong 8 game lead in the division. Sox fans were smelling blood as they knew if they could just sweep this series, or even take 2 of 3, the Yanks would likely be dead for good in terms of catching up with them. But Alas-- memories from last August's Boston Massacre Part Deux came to life again. And the Yankees absolutely stymied the Sox in the Bronx behind some absolutely stellar pitching (Against Boston's best pitching no less!). If there's one Yankee I dislike the most, it's Roger Clemens . And if there's two, add in A-Rod. And if three, gimme Jeter. Well, all three took out their whuppin' sticks and had their way with the suddenly offensively-inept Boston Red Sox . After scoring 10 runs in 4 straight against the ChiSox, the Red Sox could barely bang out a hit against Wang and Clemens. And so, the Sox left with their tail between thei... Pedro Makes Return and History [David Stefanini]
2007-09-03 23:14:00 Pedro Martinez pitched today for the first time in almost a year. He threw 76 pitches over 5 innings. He gave up 5 hits, 2 earned runs, while striking out 4 batters. The Mets won the game 10-4 as Pedro won his first game of 2007. It is his first win since August 6th of 2006. More importantly it is the Mets 4th consecutive win. Combine that with Philadelphia losing to Atlanta, and that gives the Mets a 5 game lead in the division. When Aaron Harang became the second strikeout victim of Pedro this afternoon, Pedro joined a club more exclusive than the 500 HR, 3,000 hit, and 300 win clubs. Pedro now has 3,002 career strikeouts. He is only the 15th pitcher in MLB history to have 3,000 or more strikeouts in his career. He is one of only 3 pitchers in this club to have more strikeouts than innings pitched. One other note to take from this game. Ken Griffey Jr. tied Cal Ripken Jr. for 17th on the career RBI list. Griffey now has 1,695 for his career.http://img68.imageshack.us/my.php? image=am... More About: History , David , Return , Pedro , Tory
Penn State, As Requested By Me [A.J. Cordi]
2007-09-03 16:07:00 In Penn State 's home opener, they Nittany Lions shut out Golden Panthers, 59-0! However, even here in Pennsylvania, it seems as though PSU has been discredited because FIU is unranked, whereas PSU is 17th. Credit should be given where credit is due. A 59-0 shut out is amazing, regardless of rank!Quarterback Anthony Morelli threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns, and the rushers accumulated 236 yards overall. But what's really special about this win is that the yards weren't gained by just one passer and one rusher - it was truly a team effort! Check out the box score to see what I mean.I think this year is going to be a good year for PSU. The team seems more together and having Ol' Joe back on the field proved to be a huge confidence boost!Below are my predictions for the remainder of the PSU season:9/8 - Win VS Notre Dame9/15 - Win VS Buffalo9/22 - Loss at Michigan9/29 - Win at Illinois10/6 - Win VS Iowa10/13 - Loss VS Wisconsin10/20 - Win at Indiana10/27 - Win VS Ohio State1... 2007-09-02 20:05:00 Georgia Tech 33, Notre Dame 3 - Even I didn't realize just how great Brady Quinn was for Notre Dame until yesterday. The Fighting Irish looked less like a top tier college football team and looked more like a high school team that could not figure out what a passing play was meant for. They ran a high school option type offense...keep in mind that their head coach, Charlie Weiss, just a few years ago led pro offense to the Super Bowl with the Patriots. Yesterday he could have been coaching a high school team and you wouldn't have known the difference. It's gonna be a long year for the Irish.Rutgers 38, Buffalo 3 - Okay, so the opponent was not exactly West Virginia, but the Scarlett Knights came out as a team that looked like the knew that they now belong on the national stage. U.S. Open: Early Exit for Sharapova [J. Mark English]
2007-09-02 19:45:00 My macho side is disappointed. I wanted to see the gorgeous Maria Sharapova play in the finals of the U.S. Open in Flushing, New York. The defending U.S. Open champ lost to Agnieszka Radwanska. In doing so, Sharapova, the No. 2 seed, lost to a No. 30 seed. Its the first time since 1981 that No. 2 seed had been knocked out before the round of 16.Here is more from Karen Crouse of the New York Times : As Maria Sharapova?s United States Open title defense unraveled yesterday, the indignities piled up as fast as the double faults. Her teenage opponent, Agnieszka Radwanska, crept in close to the service line to receive Sharapova?s second serves as if she were playing an advanced beginner and not a two-time Grand Slam champion. In the third set, with Sharapova trailing, 5-2 and 15-0, her father and coach, Yuri Sharapov, moved from the first row of the guest box to a seat higher up, where he could not be seen so easily. Sharapov has been known to coach his daughter from the stands, but h... More About: Tennis , English
It's Official, Pedro Is Back [David Stefanini]
2007-09-02 17:08:00 New York Mets fan the day we have been waiting for has arrived (or it will tomorrow). The New York Mets have announced, they were so impressed with Pedro 's bullpen session on Saturday, that they are going to let the ace take the mound on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds.Let's not get our hopes up yet. Pedro will be on a strict, 75 pitch count and not be allowed to throw more than 35 in one inning. There is no way of telling just how effective Pedro will be. Met's physician, David Altchek, who performed the surgery said no pitcher has ever come back from rotator cuff surgery within one year. Pedro will be making this start, 2 days shy of the 11 month anniversary of the surgery. Pedro is entering uncharted territory. That means for us Mets fans and those who are just interested, we really have no clue what to expect. The only things that are certain are, Pedro will not be throwing mid to upper 90's and more importantly he will have a great impact on this team in the dugout.Before... I Love the Yankees [Karol Sheinin]*
2007-09-02 13:52:00 The last time I attended a Yankees -Red Sox match-up, I ran into Stephen Spruiell and Nathan Goulding. Nate was furtively wearing a Red Sox hat for which Stephen and I mocked him pretty mercilessly. Last night, finding myself again at a Yankees-Red Sox game, I texted the National Review boys to see if they too were attending the game. They both texted back that they were not and Nate added "I wish". The score at that point was Yankees 2, Red Sox 0, so I texted back "look at the score, I'm not sure you do." This was enough to rile up the Sox fan to offer me a $10 bet that they win the game. Easiest ten bucks I ever did make. We sat in front of this incredibly loud and obnoxious Red Sox chick. Peter, aka the nicest guy in the whole world, delivered the funniest line of the night when he said in a perfect Boston accent "wow, she's wicked annoying." Red Sox Rookie, Clay Buchholz, Tosses a No-No [J. Mark English]
More articles from this author:2007-09-02 06:50:00 Here with the story is Howard Ulman of the Boston Globe:Before Clay Buchholz made his major league debut two weeks ago, the Boston Red Sox told him he was going back to the minors -- even if he pitched a no-hitter. Got to keep the kid now. The 23-year-old rookie pitched that no-hitter in just his second outing, using a dazzling three-pitch assortment of fastballs, curves and changeups to beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-0 Saturday night."There's no going back to Triple-A," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.Buchholz was called up from Pawtucket on Saturday when teams were allowed to expand their 25-man rosters. The crowd stood through the entire ninth inning, cheering every pitch and taking pictures of the righty in his windup and as he paced around the mound. He started the inning by striking out Brian Roberts on a 93 mph fastball.
