Santana Saga Ends
2008-01-29 22:50:00
The Johan Santana saga has come to an end. On January 29 the METS have agreed to send Gomez and 3 prospects probably Mulvey, Guerra and Humber. The only thing that is standing in the way is a contract extension which I don't see being a problem and a physical. If you are a Twins fan you got to be frustrated and angry. I think most people thought that the Mets had to trade both Fernando Martinez and Carlos Gomez in order to acquire Santana. Also back at the Winter Meeting the Twins had an offer from the Yanks that included Hughes and Melky but passed. In my opinion I think Bill Smith over played his cards and I guess you can say it's a rookie mistake. Boston was just in it to drive up the price on the Yankees. Cashman was very stubborn and didn't want to trade the youngsters and I agree with him. They have 3 great pitchers who all could be an ace on another team. This is a deal the Mets had to make because of the collapse at the end of last year. Without a doubt in my mind th...

Pigskin Pick'em Playoffs - The Super Bowl [EdMcGon]
2008-01-29 20:33:00
I was going to do a long post, completely overanalyzing the Super Bowl . Fortunately, the New York Giants have saved me the trouble by shooting off their mouths. For example (the following quotes are from the New York Post's website):As he pulled his car up to the Giants Stadium tunnel to unload his bags, [Plaxico] Burress was asked...a direct question: Are you ready to make history? "You better believe it," the towering Giants receiver said. And then, as he entered the stadium and turned left toward the Giants locker room, Burress was asked for his prediction. Burress never hesitated, flatly stating "23-17." He didn't identify the winning team. He didn't have to.Or even better:Next came Michael Strahan...The same question: Are you ready to make history? "Yes sir," said Strahan, who for 15 years has chased the dream of winning the Super Bowl."History will be ours."How about a quote from Giants chairman Steve Tisch, when asked to predict a winner? (quote from Northjersey.com)"I'm n...

Pigskin Pick'em Playoffs - Divisional Results/Championship Preview [EdMcGon
2008-01-16 11:12:00
Time to give Bill Barker some kudos (try to keep your breakfast down people): Barker aced last weekend's games. On the other hand, Mark English swung for the fences and struck out. Here are the playoff results so far:Bill Barker - 7Audio Dave - 6EdMcGon - 5David Stefanini - 5Robert A. George - 5J. Mark English - 1With only three games left, it looks like a Barker vs. Audio Dave horse race, with the rest of us as the "Fred" (as in Thompson) in the race. Here are my picks for this weekend's games (with other pertinent info):San Diego Chargers at New England Patriots (Sunday at 3:00 p.m. EST, game temperature estimated at 22°F): The paradigm of recent times versus possible all-time perfection? The Chargers represent the "paradigm of recent times", where a team follows up an outstanding season where they failed in the playoffs with a good season where they win the Super Bowl. Last year, the 12-4 Colts won the Super Bowl after going 14-2 the previous season and losing in the playoffs to ...

Pigskin Pick'em Playoffs - Wild Card Results/Divisional Preview [EdMcGon]
2008-01-09 10:51:00
Sorry for the delay, but here are the results from last weekend's NFL playoff picks:EdMcGon - 3Bill Barker - 3Audio Dave - 3David Stefanini - 3Robert A. George - 2J. Mark English - 1For this week's picks, remember to get them in before 4:30 pm EST on Saturday. Here are my picks:Seattle Seahawks at Green Bay Packers: I certainly under-rated the Hawks last week, but I cannot see them beating the Pack on the frozen tundra.Jacksonville Jaguars at New England Patriots: The Jags may give the Pats a hard time, but expect the Pats to pull it out in the end. The Pats just seem to have an extra gear they turn on whenever they need it.San Diego Chargers at Indianapolis Colts: This one has upset potential, but I can't pick the inconsistent Chargers over the fairly consistent Colts.New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys: The Giants have the momentum, plus they play better on the road. The Cowboys stumbled at the end of the season, losing two of their last three games. But the Boys are still the be...

Pigskin Pick'em Playoffs - Wild Card Round [EdMcGon]
2008-01-01 06:58:00
As I mentioned in my previous post, it is time for the Pigskin Pick'em Playoffs !My picks for this weekend's games (with the game time shown):Redskins at Seahawks, Saturday, 4:30 p.m. ET: The Skins have the "mo", plus they are a better overall team.Jaguars at Steelers, Saturday, 8 p.m. ET: The Jags have already beaten the Steelers in Pittsburgh once this season. This will make twice.Giants at Buccaneers, Sunday, 1 p.m. ET: Both teams lost their last game of the season, but the Giants at least have to feel good about their performance. Add in the fact they get a road game to start the playoffs, and the Giants seem like a good pick to advance.Titans at Chargers, Sunday, 4:30 p.m. ET: The Chargers remind me of the recent Super Bowl winners who have charged out of the Wild Card round to win it all. They have all the talent to win it and they have the momentum going into the playoffs (a six game winning streak). If only Norv Turner wasn't their head coach. Still, they should have no tr...

VINDICATION FOR OREGON, RECOGNITION FOR ROPER
2008-01-01 04:51:00
Who is Justin Rope r?Until today, there were not many sports fans who could answer that question. After the University of Oregon Ducks' 56-21 victory over the University of South Florida Bulls, more people will know about the Ducks' redshirt freshman quarterback from Buford High School, in Douglasville, Georgia. In the first start of his collegiate career, and in a bowl game no less, Roper responded by completing 16 of 29 passes including four for touchdowns in leading the Ducks to the win. Most college football fans and pundits had given the Ducks (9-4) up for dead after a season-ending knee injury to starting quarterback Dennis Dixon against the University of Arizona Wildcats November 15. Dixon was headed for a possible Heisman Trophy, and Oregon, 8-1 and ranked #2 in the polls at the time, seemed destined for a BCS bowl game... then Dixon, playing on a knee he and the team knew was damaged, went down early in the 34-24 loss to the 'Cats. Backup quarterback Brady Leaf took ov...

However, I have decided to begin the Pigskin Playoffs! Here are the new rules:1. The top six pickers from the regular season (EdMcGon, David Stefanini, Robert A. George, Bill Barker, J. 2007-12-27 14:13:00
SATURDAY GAME ALERT! PLEASE HAVE ALL PICKS IN BY 8:15 PM EST ON SATURDAY!It may be the last week of the regular season, but we will be continuing the Pigskin Pick'em through the playoffs and the Super Bowl, to give all you losers...er, I mean to give all you fine people a chance to catch up to my overwhelming YTD totals. Of course, you could still take the weekly "bragging rights" prize. My picks (otherwise known as the correct picks):New England Patriots at New York Giants: At least the NFL made the right decision to simulcast this NFL Network game on both CBS and NBC. However, don't expect to see great football here. The Pats will get to 16-0, the Giants will rest their starters early, and the second half should be a yawn-fest.Seattle Seahawks at Atlanta Falcons: Speaking of "yawn-fests"...New Orleans Saints at Chicago Bears: Don't let the records fool you. The Bears are the better team here.San Francisco 49ers at Cleveland Browns: The Browns need the win and a lot of help to ma...

Pigskin Pick'em - NFL Week 16 Picks [EdMcGon]
2007-12-19 12:36:00
Time for everyone's favorite game, "Ed wins!", otherwise known as Pigskin Pick'em!Mercifully, this week we don't have to go to the trouble of picking the winner of the Steelers-Rams. It would take a Christmas miracle for the Rams to win. However, there is a Saturday night game, so remember to get your picks in before 8:15 EST on Saturday! My picks:Dallas Cowboys at Carolina Panthers: Will there be a Jessica Simpson sighting in Carolina this weekend? If so, take the Panthers. More likely, the Cowboys win this one.New York Giants at Buffalo Bills: There are two factors in this game: first, the G-men are on the road; second, the Bills don't seem ready to win the important games yet.Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears: The Bears could win this, ruining Lord Favre's farewell tour. And then I woke up...Cleveland Browns at Cincinnati Bengals: Is there a more likable team in the NFL than the Browns? They have struggled for decades in that godawful city, they have a no-name quarterback who...

Fantasy Football: Gates vs. Scheffler? [EdMcGon]
2007-12-18 16:51:00
As I was getting ready for the first round playoff game in my fantasy football league last Thursday, I was reviewing the last minute news when I saw there was a strong possibility that Antonio Gates , my tight end, would not be playing (he has a minor back injury).I was faced with the dilemna of taking a chance that Gates would play, or take a chance on my backup tight end, Tony Scheffler of the Broncos. Even though Scheffler is only a backup for the Broncos, he has had a few solid games this year, his best game coming against the Bears when he had 5 catches for 82 yards and a touchdown.Deciding it would be better to take a chance on Scheffler and get SOME points, rather than the potential goose egg I was looking at from Gates, I played Scheffler. I made the right choice, since he got 7 catches for 100 yards and one beautiful touchdown. Gates did play, but only got one catch for 8 yards.(I should state that I would have won the game regardless of who I started at tight end, as I won ...

Pigskin Pick'em - NFL Week 15 Results [EdMcGon]
2007-12-18 13:48:00
It has been a great week for me. I won the first round playoff game in my fantasy football league, AND won Pigskin Pick'em, AND moved into first place in Pigskin Pick'em's YTD standings. As Terrell Owens would say, "I love me some me!" (I still have no clue what that means, but it sounds appropriate.)Let the bragging commence with the weekly pick results:EdMcGon - 12J. Mark English - 9David Stefanini - 8Robert A. George - 8Audio Dave - 8Bill Barker - 7So how did I end up with a 3 pick lead over second place? 4 picks over third place?I can thank the Jaguars for part of it. Mark was the only other person to pick the Jags. The Jags are a far better team than people give them credit. Don't be surprised if the Jags end up being the team that beats the Patriots in the playoffs. How about them 49ers? Barker was the only other one to pick the Niners. And I can't forget a hardy chorus of "Hail to the Redskins"! One important thing I left out of my comments on that game: The Giants stink a...

Steroids in Baseball: "Win at all Costs" [Chris Luttig]
2007-12-14 17:27:00
(Chris Luttig is a former minor league pitcher)Yesterday came the names from the now famous Mitchell Report. Mind you do we really care, we all know there are performance enhancing drugs and supplements in sports. There have been substances induced into the body to give one an advantage since the first recorded instances of sports as well as substances given to other to inhibit there performance. This isn't something new it will always be there no matter the sport, football, bowling, table tennis, hockey, badminton, curling, cycling, baseball, basketball, wrestling, and so on and on all sports. There is one commonality of sports and war. "Win at all costs" do you think our soliders are clean? If you do,pity your ignorance they get more pills to pop then a speed junkie or do most people go on no sleep in a mission 36-48 hrs in combat. Not to mention anything else they can get to make them bigger stronger faster and make the enemy obsolete. Is anyone going to seriously tell me there a...

THERE IS A SATURDAY GAME THIS WEEK, SO ALL PICKS MUST BE IN BEFORE 8:15 PM EST ON SATURDAY. Is that clear enough? And just for the record, I like the Broncos over the Texans in tonight's game.My picks this week:Cincinnati Bengals at San Francisco 49ers: Two teams with coaches on the hot seat. But it's hard to see the Bengals defense stopping Frank Gore.Seattle Seahawks at Carolina Panthers: This game should be close, but the Hawks bring just a little more to the game.Buffalo Bills at Cleveland Browns: I would not have expected this game to have playoff implications, but it does. This is the game of the week, as these two teams are about equal in my mind. It could go either way, but I am leaning towards the Browns. They have a better offensive line.Tennessee Titans at Kansas City Chiefs: In a Jeff Fisher vs. Herm Edwards coaching battle, who do you pick?Baltimore Ravens at Miami Dolphins: The Fish could pull out of their funk with this game, as the Ravens are nothing special. Pigskin Pick'em - NFL Week 14 Results & Mike Vick [EdMcGon]
2007-12-11 10:54:00
The best pick this week was made by U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson, when he chose to give Mike Vick 23 months in prison, instead of the 12-18 months recommended in Vick's plea agreement.I know a lot of people want to see Vick out of football forever, but I personally hope Vick can learn from this mistake, get his head on straight, and come back better than ever in a few years. Although if he doesn't play well, I am sure the fans will have him on a "short leash".Seriously though, in our weekly picks, Bill Barker pulled a "Patriot" and went a perfect 15 for 15. As usual, the Bears-Redskins game tonight will NOT count in the weekly or YTD standings. But for the record, I like the Skins tonight. Now for the rest of my weekly picks:Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills: This could be the week for the Fish. More likely not.St. Louis Rams at Cincinnati Bengals: This might be a fun game to watch, only because neither team knows how to play defense.Dallas Cowboys at Detroit Lions: They should have played this game on Thanksgiving.Oakland Raiders at Green Bay Packers: Even a banged-up Brett Favre is too much for the Raiders.Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Houston Texans: This is the closest game of the week. With Bucs QB Jeff Garcia looking like he will play, and Texans QB Matt Schaub looking like he won't, I will gamble on the Bucs to win it. Even if both played, it still could go either way.Carolina Panthers at Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jags are the better cats here.New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles: Take the Eagles in this revenge match.San Diego Charge...

2007 Sportsman of the Year?!?!?! [Robert A. George]
2007-12-04 23:30:00
Who else? That spinning head? The hideous shriek? The slashing of wrists and gouging out of eyes? That would be our own Ed McGonigal. It would be best to leave Ed alone right about now.[It hadn't occurred to me, but I have to agree with ESPN Radio's Mike and Mike, who mentioned it this morning: Tony Dungy would have been a much better choice -- even though the AFC championship and Super Bowl games occurred during the first five weeks of 2007. Yes, the historical nature of being the first black coach to win the Super Bowl is nice to note, but there are far more substantial reasons that make Dungy deserving: He finally got the "can't-win-the-big-one" monkey off both his and Peyton Manning/the Colts backs. Furthermore, in a pretty horrid year of bad sportsmanship (Michael Vick , NBA referee gambling, Pacman Jones, Barry Bonds , the Tour de France) -- he is one of the classiest, most upstanding men in sports.] http://img68.imageshack.us/my.php?image=a merlegendslogo5wj.gif

Sports Media Bias: Brett Favre [EdMcGon]
2007-11-30 14:05:00
We have all heard of the liberal Media bias displayed by most Media sources. But there is a Media bias far more glaring and obvious than anything the Media does related to politics. That bias is towards Brett Favre .If you took Cal Ripken's durability and work ethic and combined it with John Kruk's wit and love of the game, and put it into a football player, you would have Brett Favre, who is without question one of the great quarterbacks playing, as well as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time.But the media treatment of Favre would lead you to think he transcends the game itself. Last night's Cowboys-Packers game was a disgusting example of Favre bias on full display.Favre got injured in the second quarter. Mind you, the game was still being played, but you might not know it from the coverage. While Bryant Gumbel and Cris Collinsworth were droning on about Favre's injury, we got to see repeated replays of the play where Favre got hurt. While Aaron Rodgers led the Packers...

As stated in my previous post, the Cowboys-Packers game will NOT count, per the Pigskin Pick'em rules (see below, or any of the other previous 12 times they were posted). Here are my weekly picks:San Francisco 49ers at Carolina Panthers: Hard to pick against the 49ers with a healthy Frank Gore.Jacksonville Jaguars at Indianapolis Colts: If you can't see the Cowboys-Packers, then try to catch this one. It might be better. With Peyton playing more like Eli lately, expect the Jags to exact some revenge for their last loss to the Colts.San Diego Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs are a mess.New York Jets at Miami Dolphins: Speaking of good games...well, you know I wasn't talking about this one. This may be the only time I pick the Fish all year.Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings: My first upset special for this week.Seattle Seahawks at Philadelphia Eagles: Coin toss game.Atlanta Falcons at St. Louis Rams: These two teams are still playing? Sean Taylor of the Washington Redskins is dead. This is from the NY Times, by Kirk Semple:Sean Taylor, a Pro Bowl safety with the Washington Redskins who was shot early Monday by an intruder at his home in an affluent suburb south of Miami, died early today from his injuries, one of his lawyers said. The lawyer, Richard Sharpstein, who has represented the 24-year-old Taylor, said in an interview by telephone that he received the news this morning from Taylor?s father.?His father called me at 5:15 a.m. this morning and said Sean was with God,? Sharpstein said. ?He was crying and overwrought with grief.? Sharpstein said he did not know exactly what time Taylor died. The shooting Monday was reported to the police at 1:46 a.m. by Taylor?s girlfriend, who was in the house with Taylor in Palmetto Bay, an affluent suburb south of Miami. Taylor, bleeding profusely, was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he had surgery but remained in a critical condition throughout Monday. He wa...
