Poisonous Toothpaste
2007-06-15 15:48:00
A report was released yesterday by Colgate-Palmolive, one of the world's largest producers of toothpaste products, that fake versions of their brands with a previously identified poisonous ingredient have surfaced in the US. Following the FDA warnings, stores in New York, New Jersey (of course), Maryland and Pennsylvania are still found to be selling counterfeit Colgate laced with diethylene glycol (also found in anti-freeze). In Colgate's defense (and because I assume that you can read): The boxes in question don't actually say Colgate on them. They say 'Cooldent' or 'Mr. Cool' so it should be fairly easy to tell whether the product is legitimate or not. The fakes also include misspellings on the packaging and say that they are made in South Africa. So to avoid the problem entirely, read the label or choose another brand. Via: BuzzFeed

TruBlue: Blueberry juice that packs a punch
2007-06-14 20:59:00
While I generally recommend eating whole fruits rather than juice, blueberry juice is an exception ? The research is simply too impressive to ignore ? It?s great for your heart, prevents bad cholesterol from building up on artery walls, and helps you to maintain healthy blood pressure. Not to mention, blueberries are high in anti-oxidants and can even help slow down the aging process by strengthening collagen formation. Lucky for us, an all natural (no High Fructose Corn Syrup), tasty blueberry beverage is available from TrueBlue juice company. Voted "Best New Blueberry Beverage in 2005", we've been fortunate enough to try two of their nutritional drinks. The drinks, TrueBlue Blueberry and TrueBlue Blueberry Blackberry are yummy to say the least. While many other blueberry drinks seem to taste a lot like grape juice, TrueBlue Blueberry earns it's name and tastes exactly like the little super-fruit.It even makes a great mixer on a night when you just want to chill out with an adu...

Alli or Adversary
2007-06-14 16:42:00
If you haven?t yet heard of the diet pill Alli , it?s likely that you live in the woods (or somewhere on a deserted island.) For months now, the new over-the-counter weight loss aid, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline has already taken to the internet. And, Glaxo says it's spending more than $150 million on the first year of the Alli marketing campaign. Some analysts think sales could hit $100 million to $200 million. And, because people love pills more than working out or eating right; I should be investing in this company! Alli uses the same active ingredient as, Xenical, but it is a half dose. Unlike Xenical, which is typically prescribed only to the dangerously obese, Alli is now available to anyone who wants assistance losing weight. Yes, it's a diet pill, and yes, it has been approved by the FDA -- but please educate yourself before you run out and buy it. It has potentially embarrassing side effects. On the plus side, GSK says you can subtract 50% more pounds if you use Alli...

For months now, the new over-the-counter weight loss aid, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline has already taken to the internet. And, Glaxo says it's spending more than $150 million on Alli's initial marketing campaign. And yet again, I am in the wrong business ... analysts seem to think that sales could hit $100 million to $200 million this year alone. Amanda Beard Poses for Playboy
2007-06-14 16:03:00
Amanda Bear d is one of the best female swimmers this generation of Americans has ever seen, but Americas sexiest athlete? I'm not so sure ... Yes, she has won seven Olympic medals, but the last time Beard attracted this much attention she was on the podium winning gold in Athens (that's more than most of us can say for ourselves.) This time? Well, Amanda will be featured nude in this months issue of Playboy magazine. She will be featured on the cover and in a revealing pictorial. When asked why she did it, Beard said it was simply a business/career decision. But was it the right one? She?s pretty good looking, but what really sets her apart from any of the of the other thousands of women who appear nude in Playboy is her accomplishments and we all know she got that great body from being active ... and honestly that's something I'm willing to support!

Gmap-Pedometer.com helps you walk the walk
2007-06-13 00:22:00
You know the drill. The walk to your local Starbucks or even to your favorite bookstore (forget walking to the gym). You always think you've walked further than you have and you're convinced that it counts for your daily exercise -- but how far did you really walk? That's where Gmaps Pedometer.com comes in. Another great use of google maps has come along and this one allows you to record your daily trek and then it gives you the total distance; usually a number far from what you thought it was. It even has a calorie counter breakdown based on your weight -- this cool feature makes it easy to find out that your walk to the coffee shop burned only 10 calories; so given the fact that your Caffe Mocha has about 400 calories in it you better find another route. You should be taking 6,000 steps a day for health and 10,000 for weight-loss... so use the free service to map your success or just stop the high-calorie coffees and you're bound to lose some weight without taking another ...

Writing for Weblogs, Inc at That's Fit.com
2007-06-10 16:00:00
I was honored and excited when the folks over at Weblogs , Inc. recently asked me to join their team of writers and contribute to their popular health & fitness blog: That's Fit.com. I will cover what I don't cover here. At the moment, That's Fit is comparable to Prevention Magazine and offers obsessive daily coverage of everything healthy and fit -- while here at LIFT I write for a particular group of active fitness enthusiasts and will continue to deliver what's hot, new and undiscovered for those who work hard and play harder! Weblogs, Inc. was founded by Brian Alvey and Jason Calacanis and was started with an investment from Mark Cuban and was recently purchased by Time Warner's AOL. Did I mention that AOL purchased Weblogs, Inc. for $25 million? So, of course, with all that is happening over there, I'm excited about this new venture and hope that you will add That's Fit to your list of favorite sites. Check out my first post: Pardon my French, but your plate is too b...

Nintendo Wii: Simulated games lead to simulated sports injuries
2007-06-07 16:50:00
Another tough day on the court? No, it turns out you're spending way too much time playing simulated sports with video games. And, in an ironic twist, it seems that if you aren't already healthy and fit it may lead to real pain and muscle soreness. A recent letter in The New England Journal of Medicine details the first documented case of acute ?Wiiitis? caused by extended play on the Nintendo Wii video game system. With the Wii video game system the player faces a video screen and moves a handheld controller handheld controller that senses three-dimensional movements. And in the tennis game, the player makes the same arm movements as in the real game of tennis, however, a player often plays for many hours. Unlike in the real sports, physical strength and endurance are not limiting factors -- gamers are engrossed and don't realize they are exercising. The down-side: Just like with any other physical activity ... you should stretch first. And, you should give your muscles ...

JetBlue and Google join the mile-high club
2007-06-06 20:07:00
Someday you?ll be rich and famous, circling the world in a Marquis Jet -- heading to your next golf outing. You?ll pull up to the jet and be handed a glass of bubbly, chilled to a cool 45 degrees. You'll be on your flight and you'll know that you're going to arrive early enough to make your tee time. Someday. Until then, you could use JetBlue's new real-time in-flight tracking channel. The JetBlue Google Maps system will allow fliers to track the progress of their flight -- location, altitude, and air speed -- while en route. Let's just hope you don?t find yourself staring at JFK on the seat back screen while stranded on the tarmac. Customers will also be able to track the progress of the JetBlue promotional RV as it travels across the US (in the event you are actually stuck on the tarmac and want to follow something that's moving.) Yes, it?s an unfair world up there; but at least now you'll know where you are. In addition, and more importantly, JetBlue's Web site wil...

Feed Your Daddy
2007-06-05 15:53:00
It's that time of the year again; summer is just around the corner. You smell the barbecues in your neighborhood and the Thong Song is blaring from someone's car radio for the hundredth time today. Oh wait ... that was so two years ago! Yes, with the coming of summer comes Father's Day, the time to say thanks and show your appreciation to what your dad refers to as your mom's "better half". And while Mother's Day seems to get all the glory, Father's Day is every bit as important. It gives us all an opportunity to show our dad that he is appreciated. But unfortunately when Father's Day rolls around, dear old Dad is lucky if someone throws a steak on the grill. So this year, start a new tradition of spoiling your father with a special HEALTHY breakfast. You deal with the gifts and the food for the rest of the day, and I'll help you kick Dad's day off to a tasty start. Here are a few of my favorites from Cooking Light: Green Eggs & Ham Pan-Seared Oatmeal with Warm Fruit Com...

The Big Bang: Read and Learn
2007-05-31 22:41:00
You?re a human so chances are you read books, unless you?re a blogger, in which case you only have time to try and get people to read your own personal work. There?s also a good chance you?re having sex, again, unless you're a blogger, in which case I would spend the energy you?re not using thrusting and moaning to get yourself off the computer once in a while. But if you do enjoy reading books and you like to have good sex, have you ever considered reading books about sex? It?s crazy, I know. Even with all the new gadgets (see JimmyJane) chances are you still need help... not to mention all the sex tips from Cosmopolitan and Details magazine are always the same. We don't really need another "What He/She Really Wants in the Bedroom" article do we? So that?s where a good book comes in: The Big Bang - A Guide to the New Sexual Universe by the writers at Nerve.com. This book is candid, and when I say candid I mean pictures and diagrams. This little baby has everything you could ...

Preserve, Whiten and Recycle
2007-05-31 19:46:00
The world is made up of all kinds. Ab crunchers. Foot fanatics. Boob guys. And then there are the teeth people. An ever-growing group most easily identified by their crisp, white smiles, they are the faithful flossers, the masses with stashes (toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash) hidden in their desk drawers and glove compartments. For them, there is now only one choice: Preserve. After all, it's the toothbrush that is constructed with environmentally friendly materials to let you replace without the waste. You are not only keeping your teeth healthy but the world while you're at it! When you?re done with your brush, you just use the mailer provided and they?ll turn it into plastic lumber or recycled store displays. Did I mention the toothbrush is already made from recycled plastic. They teamed up with Stonyfield Farms (of which, I'm a loyal fan), and for the past five years Stonyfield yogurt cups have accounted for 25-60% of the Preserve toothbrushes (and razors). Yogurt is g...

Metronaps: Energy Pods That Let You Snooze On The Job
2007-05-29 20:36:00
MetroNaps is a new take on an old idea ? providing purpose-built comfortable facilities for a daytime powernap. Yes, for you over anxious, stressed-out, hard workers you can now buy yourself some time in the land of Nod. The concept of daytime naps was once a ritualistic part of all our lives as children and in many latin and equatorial countries, the siesta is still a part of the culture. Yet, here in the United States, sleep is one of the first things people tend to sacrifice and usually it's in order to accomplish something else. But studies show that sleep depravation causes decreased productivity, and that a midday nap can help offset this decrease significantly. Did I mention that a lack of sleep can affect your ability to lose weight? A 20 minute nap in a Powerpod will set you back $14 - $20 in one of their New York locations (Empire State Building and Financial District) or you can purchase a pod and install it in your office for around US$8000. Visit Metronaps online to ...

Into Thin Air: More Oxygen Means More Energy
2007-05-29 19:38:00
Professional teams and players in the NFL, NHL, NBA as well as elite college programs and everyday people are getting their altitude from Colorado Altitude Training (CAT) and their extra Oxygen from companies like Oxia. More oxygen means more energy and that's what people are banking on. Colorado Altitude Training's products simulate altitude by lowering the oxygen percentage in the air to mimic the number of O2 molecules per breath at altitude which increases your lung performance. And, while Oxia claims to offer active, healthy conscious people a convenient source of natural energy to complement exercise and a busy lifestyle; it also promotes a natural alternative to help you party longer and harder! W Hotel even puts a can in every guest room in their Montreal location.Sort of makes you want to keep breathing. Source: Men's Vogue

Fitflops: Can a shoe tone your butt?
2007-05-23 21:40:00
Summer shoes have high expectations of your feet. Open-toe slingbacks, sandals, wedge heels. Not to mention that you?re footing the bill for weekly pedicures just to stay presentable in them. But what do you demand of your shoes? Not much, by the looks of yours... but shouldn't you? If you could request that your shoes make your legs leaner (and your butt for that matter). Wouldn't you? Sound crazy? This summer tone your thighs, your calves and your glutes with Fitflop, the UK's hottest new fitness shoe. This unique line of flip-flops was dreamt up by a woman who specialises in coming up with things we just didn't know we needed. Marcia Kilgore is the former personal trainer who came up with the concept of Bliss the Mecca for spa hoppers on both sides of the Atlantic and then surpassed herself with her next project, the gloriously tabloidish "Soap and Glory" skincare range. This time she went one step further (literally) and designed a shoe (rather a flip-flop) that exerci...

Build A Better Butt
2007-05-23 16:59:00
You've got three major muscle groups here; depending on how you train them, you can change their shape significantly, says Jim Ryno, who is a podfitness.com trainer. He recommends a basic squat (sit back as if you were lowering into a chair) while holding five- to eight-pound weights for added sculpting power. And, since the butt is one place women tend to store excess fat, cardio workouts (about 30 minutes a few days a week) will help show off your results.

Boot Camp Fitness on the rise
2007-05-18 16:01:00
New Year?s came and went. Lent is over. Memorial Day is right around the corner. You?ve talked a good game. But you?ve run out of time (and excuses). It?s officially swimsuit season. And you have yet to break a sweat (or get rid of your winter bulge). So it's time to get yourself into high gear with some basic training at an outdoor boot camp before it's too late. You say working out is boring? Yeah, well, feeling uncomfortable in your bathing-suit is well, 'ummm, down right miserable! Still need extra incentive? (You. A real pain. Working out is good for you, remember?) And a recent Chicago Tribune article reports that military-style workouts are on the rise. Turns out many of us like being yelled at while we sweat. The basic boot-camp workout includes a warm-up, cardio work (jogging, sprinting, relays, etc), and strength training (push-ups, sit-ups, lunges, etc). Many are outside and most are led by a stringent, stern instructor who likes to motivate through yelling. Don?t s...

Stripper 101: What happens in Vegas....

Men: It's Vega s ... do you know where your women are? You might want to check out a class called "Strip per 101" or who knows maybe you want to sign them up. Hotsheetstripper: The year-old class is held in a theater at the new Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino (formerly the Aladdin), and has become so popular that it's now offered daily. Approximately a dozen or so women, every day, from their 20s to 50s enthusiastically learn how to do a striptease. It's a sweat-inducing low impact aerobic workout designed to instill a positive body image and increase self-confidence, while developing a strong sense of sensuality. The mantra: Grab Life by the Pole! The fact is that you won't burn a ton of calories but it is still an exotic dancing workout that involves lunges, squats, kicks, and stretches that will reach all of the major muscle groups. It's not for everyone; some women even find the whole concept demeaning, but for the most part I'm all for trying new things. These are among the easiest areas to make over, since fat melts away here much more readily than it does from your abs and thighs. Jim Ryno likes overhead tricep extensions: Sit on a chair or 90 degree angle bench, head up, back straight, feet firmly on the floor. Hold one dumbbell (vertical to floor) with both hands overhead. Keeping your upper arms in place, slowly lower dumbbell straight down behind head, as low as you can naturally go. Keeping elbows at one fixed point. Raise the dumbbell upward over your head until arms are extended, rotating your hands up and over until the top plates are resting in palms of hands, thumbs around handle. Lower the dumbbell behind your head in a slow, controlled manner.Try to keep your elbows at the same fixed point throughout the lifting and lowering motion and keep upper arms (from shoulders to elbows) close to sides at all times. Do this exercise two or three times a week, and see changes in as few as two weeks. To smooth away back-of-a...

Weighing in on The Celebrity Scale
2007-05-16 15:59:00
Your relationship with your scale is sort of like your relationship with your spouse. You get along just fine ? as long as it tells you what you want to hear. Wouldn't it be nice if you could always look forward to seeing it? Well, the Celebrity Weigh ing Scale is one way to improve the weighing ritual, it helps you see how you compare to your fave celebs, historical figures, and made-up characters. Settings replace unhealthy obsessions with clever similes. Or, if you prefer, you can step on up to the Animal Scale and see which animal you weigh. Snowboard Video: Mack Dawg Productions
2007-05-11 17:36:00
The last time you checked, the definition of LIFT may have undergone some revisions. For instance, you might think here at this site that LIFT means to lift weights. But really it's more of an anology of how you should be living your life. Play HARD and you won't have to be at the gym six days a week - give your life a lift. You'll get an idea of what I mean when you watch this short video. The energizing (and motivational) video from Mack Dawg Prod uctions clearly represents what it feels like to play hard.Aside from that - why am I showing you a winter flick in the summer? Because that's how movies work. The film won't be released until fall, so get motivated and enjoy the trailer! The sky's the limit. Via: Fubiz.net, a great site (French).

Pulse Ring: Heart Rate Monitor
2007-05-10 15:16:00
Wondering what makes you tick or how fast you're ticking? Find out with the Puls e Ring , the smallest heart rate monitor I've ever seen. Okay, it?s downright unattractive, but that?s beside the point. It pretty much does the same thing as its larger counterparts (but with no chest strap required). It will track your heart rate and continuously display it on the small LCD display. It has a range of 30-250 beats per minute; mind you though, if your heart rate is in the 250 beats per minute range... well, er', you might want to slow things down a bit! The ring also has a timer and stopwatch functions making it ideal for you fitness buffs. No, it?s not Total Recall nor does it have a GPS system (although you could fit one on it's big face). It?s design ingenuity trying it's best. The fact is, like most monitors, this useful little device does it's job by answering life?s most pressing question: Am I working my fat ass hard enough? Other than that it's unlikely that any style-...

Whoa there, little buddy. Just because there?s a not-so-cool-looking Asthma inhaler in your hand, it doesn't mean you have to cover it up by sliding under the table to use it. Then again, some things just can't lose their stigmas. Enter Apod, the worlds first Asthma Pod. Created by a UK design team (initially thought up on a napkin at Cipriani's), the Apod is a trendy new way to carry the dreaded inhaler. The design is formatted to put the puffer inside the case with hopes that the user will feel cool enough to use it in public. The case comes in several different colors like Pink Zing, Really Red, Pink Sparkle, and Ultra Blue. For the uber-cool daring kids, you can choose Night Glow or Day Glow Green. And, for those professionals (yes, you can be the hippest man at the office) there is Jet Black. Can?t find what you like? For a few extra bucks, you can buy more than one and personalize your cover by mixing pieces. We know how you love to put your mark on everything. The best...

Vegetarians: Smart (But Still Annoying)

It?s not like you don?t try. When you and your vegetarian friend get together (everyone?s got one), you smile through adventures in Soyland. Mmmmm, "Fib Ribs", Tofurky jerky and mock lobster. I know it well; but aside form being polite there is another reason to gulp down one of those tasty veggie burgers. It turns out your friend is smarter than you. According to the BBC, it seems that Vegetarians are brainier than the rest of us: A Southampton University team found those who were vegetarian by 30 had recorded five IQ points more on average at the age of 10. Researchers said it could explain why people with higher IQ were healthier as a vegetarian diet was linked to lower heart disease and obesity rates. Lucky for you: It's never to late to change. Start by visiting 101cookbooks.com. Written and photographed by Heidi Swanson, her web sites and cookbooks are not to be missed. This woman makes healthy not only taste good but look good too.
