Rampant Barca at Santander; Racing - 1, Barca -4
2009-09-23 10:38:00
FC Barcelona continued their excellent run in the league with a 4-1 demolition of Racing Santander at El Sardinero stadium. Two goals from Messi and one each from Ibrahmovic and Pique was enough to see Barca comfortably past Racing. Like the weekend it was a sensational first half display which put Barca in command. Now Barca has moved three points clear and the pressure will be surely on Madrid to respond against Villareal. Ibrahmovic scored his fourth goal in the league from that many matches. It was by far the best performance by the Swedish superstar and incidently it was also the best performance by Barca till now. Messi is keeping on improving and is surprising everyone with each match. I expected Guardiola to rest Messi for this match but that wasn't to be happened. Guardiola brought in Puyol and Abidal in the defense. Thus Alves, Pique, Puyol and Abidal formed the defense. The midfield was made up of Xavi, Kieta and Busquets. Messi, Ibrahmociv and Henry formed the forward l...
Racing Santander - Barca Preview
2009-09-22 14:08:00
Ok, there are some serious good news - not like all the news till now was bad. But this one sounds so good - Milito is back in training. There is no date set for his return but still it is good to hear that we may be able to count on his service maybe in the latter part of the season. And that is a very good news to the build up of the Racing clash. There are reports that Pep may be tempted to rest Messi at the El Sardinero, but most probably he would only start him from the bench. Last season also Messi started on the bench here and came on to help Barca win that encounter. It is also not clear whether Iniesta will get a much awaited start; Pep seems to be in no hurry to rush "San Andres" and there is a high chance he will again see action only after the break. Pep Guardiola has announced a 19 man squad for the visit to Santander - Valdés, Pinto, Alves, Puyol, Piqué, Marquez, Chygrynskiy, Maxwell, Abidal, Busquets, Toure Yaya, Xavi, Keita, Iniesta, Pedro, Messi, Ibrahimovic, Henr...

Barca Thrash Atletico Yet Again; FC Barcelona - 5, Atletico Madrid - 2
2009-09-20 09:08:00
For the second time in a row, Atletico Madrid 's visit to Camp NOu turned out to be a nightmare. But it was better than last time, I mean they score one more and conceded one less too this time around. With this heavy defeat Atletico's start to the season has gone from bad to worse. First half goals from Ibrahmovic, Messi, Alves and Keita, and an injury time strike from Messi condemned Atletico's to their heaviest defeat this season. Aguero and Forlan both scored in either half as consolation for the Madrid based side. Lionel Messi was on fire throughout the night and it was good to see him scroing twice especially after penning a huge deal which keeps him with Barca till 2016. Guardiola decided to start Iniesta from the bench and that means Busquest started alongside Keita in the middle. Valdes as usual occipied the goal keeper role. Alves, Pique, Chygrrynskiy and Maxwell fromed the defense. The midfield had Xavi, Busquets and Keita lined-up. And as everyone expected the attackin...

FC Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid Preview
2009-09-19 12:38:00
FC Barcelona will be looking to continue with their perfect run when they take on Atletico Madrid . FC barcelona has won their two La Liga matches, meanwhile Atletico start has been very poor - they lost to Malaga and drew with Racing last week; they currenly lie in the 18th place in the table. Eventhough Atletico hasn't been in great form, this has to be the first tough test for the team this season. The matches with Atletico Madrid has always been tough to Barcelona. Last season we drubbed them 6-1 at camp Nou but went on to lose 4-3 at Madrid. That one of the small blemish in our last perfect season. Meanwhile FC Barcelona will be glad to have tied down Messi till 2016 with a deal which put his buy-out clause at 250 million. Messi is supposed to earn 9.5 million after taxes, which will make him the highest earner in the Club. Mean while every ones attention will be to see whether Iniesta will start in this match.Guardiola may rest some of the players who started in San Siro. But ...

Bojan Krkic Could be Barcelona's Trump Card this season
2009-09-18 11:08:00
Zlatan Ibrahmovic, the tall Swedish Striker has been the focus point of all discussion regarding FC Barcelona this season, and I firmly believe that this is going to continue throughout this season. Guardiola's decision to replace swap Eto with Ibrahmovic did raise some eyebrows (including mine) and Zlatan's every action on the pitch will be under the scanner for the whole season. He will be compared to Eto's achievement and contribution at every nook and corner and he better get used to it. The whole point for which Guardiola acquired Ibrahmovic was to give Barca an edge which we were lacking, especially the aerial threat. But his performance at the San Siro especially in the aerial department does not justify that. I know it is too early to judge him. He is one of the most talented striker in Europe and way more skilled than Samuel Eto. But the early indications show that he will take some time to integrate into Barca's playing style. My biggest concern seeing him was his atti...

Inter vs Barca Player Rating
2009-09-17 08:54:00
Valdes - 6.5 - had nothing much to do throughout the match but did well when called upon.Alves - 7 - Was good in defense and linked up well with Messi in attack. may not have been fully effective in attack that was because Chivu was having the best game of his life.Puyol - 7 - May have looked out of position at times but was great with usual no nonsense approach. He did well in defense and was one of the best player on the pitch.Pique - 7.5 - Had a great night. Was very active in cutting off al dangers. Abidal has to thank him for covering his mistake many time in the first half.Abidal - 6 - Had a very poor first half, but looked ok in the second half. Couldn't do much in atatck as there was no link up between Keita and him.Xavi - 8 - The best Barca player on the pitch. He created enough chances for Ibra to finish off the game but none was taken. Linked well with Messi and Alves. It is no surpriuse that all Barca attack started with him.Toure - 7.5 - Looked very rusty in the first ...

Organised Inter Holds Barca to a Goal Less Draw
2009-09-17 08:48:00
FC Barcelona started their UEFA Champions League defense with a goal-less draw at San Siro. This is never a bad result but with the chances we had we could have come out with three points with ease. It was a clash of the best atatck in the world against one of the most organised defense in the world. This was billed as the match-up between Eto and Ibrahmovic. Eto never had a sniff of our goal but Ibrahmovic wasted some golden oppurtunities. From the evidence of tonight's match, it is clear that Ibrahmovic will take hell lot of time to get in sync with the team mates and it is yet to be seen whether it will make our La Liga title defense more worse. Guardiola decided to start Iniesta from the bench for this match. Valdes started at the goal. Alves, Puyol, Pique and Abidal started in defense. The midfield was made up of Xavi, Toure and Keita. Henry, Ibra and Messi formed the attacking trio.Barca cam on top in the early exchanges and could have gone three up within the first ten minut...

Inter Milan vs Barca Preview
2009-09-16 10:06:00
FC Barcelona will kick start their defense of Champions League crown officially with the visit to San Siro tonight. This match is set to bring out some stunning re-unions, most importantly Eto and Ibrahmovic. Zlatan Ibrahmovic is set to have a very hostile reception from the Inter fans; meanwhile Eto will feel a bit awkard playing against players who were his team mates for long six years. But there will be no lack of motivation for these players. Apart from these two Motta and Maxwell will be playing against there old clubs. Samuel Eto has recently discussed abnout his move to Inter with the media. He made no effort to hide his surprise and dissappointment in being discarded after a great effor last season. So he will be extra motivated to prove something to Guardiola. To his credit Eto has already fitted into the Inter side and looks to have developed a deadly understanding with Diego Milito. Meanwhile Ibrahmovic may have slotted two goals but he never have looked comfortable in t...

It's Official - ESPN STAR Sports Will Not Be Telecasting La Liga
2009-09-14 08:08:00
Ok, This is one of the most dissappointing moment for a La Liga fan. I did contact Cheryl Long, Manager, Corporate Communications, ESPN STAR Sports regarding the telecast of La Liga this season in India. He has replied confirming the news that they will not be telecasting La Liga this season in India. He also has confirmed that they don't have the rights to show highlights package. Now with ESPN-STAR Sports out of the picture we only have Ten Sports to depend on. I tried to contact them but there is still no reply from their part. I will write to them again and see what they will reply. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Otherwise streaming in Internet is the only option. I do agree that it is a not so great option, but it is better than nothing. Even though I am heavily dissappointed I would like to thank Cheryl Long for replying to my mail as early as he could.

Continuing The Great Start; Getafe-0, Barca-2
2009-09-13 08:49:00
FC Barcalona continued with their excellent start to the season with a 2-0 victory away at the Coliseum Alfonso stadium in Getafe . Goals from Ibrahmovic and Messi took Barca to a not so convincing victory against a tough Getafe side. This victory has taken us to the top of the table and we will be looking to hold onto that top spot no matter what. I may not have predicted the scoreline correctly but I did predict that Ibrahmovic will score in this game; so I got some predictions right. This game was not the most beautiful by any means but this victory will mean a lot in the context of the season. We had developed this habit of dropping points after a international break especially away from home in the last couple of seasons. Taking that into consideration this three point will be very valuable. Guardiola decided to rest many of his international stars. Valdes started in the goal. Puyol, Txigrinski , Pique and Abidal formed the defense. As expected Toure partnered with Xavi and Ke...

Getafe vs Barca Preview
2009-09-12 08:29:00
La LIga will be back to full swing after a week absence due to international matches. Barca will be travelling to Getafe to carry on with their excellent start of the season. Marquez and Iniesta are both declared fit for tonight's encounter. There are rumours that Pep Guardiola has already dropped Marquez from the squad. Iniesta also is not expected to start the match but definitely will get some playing time in the second half. Messi and Alves has only arrived back to Barcelona on friday and both are expected to be rested for this encounter. Messi's confidence after Argentina's disastrous qualification campaign should be very low. Meanwhile Getafe temporarily occupy the top spot in La Liga after their victory last week. Getafe is going through a great run of victories and will definitely like to continue on their good run. For Barcelona complacency will be a great factor which will decide the match. Getafe always is a difficult place for Barca to visit and if the player are goi...

Maradona's Boys Digs Their Own Grave
2009-09-10 11:39:00
On a night when European Champions Spain and England booked their place in next year's; Argentina added more worries to their cause by losing against Paraguay. A well below par Argentina went down to a solitary goal against Paraguay; this victory sealed Paraguay's place in South Africa. Argentina lies in fifth place with 22 points. They are out of the automatic qualifying spot and looks utterly dis-organised in their last three matches. Meanwhile Dani Alves started in Brazil's 4-2 destruction of Chile. Nilmar scored a wonderful hat-trick and Baptista added a fourth. Meanwhile Sweden won their match against Malta with an own goal. Portugal also won their match against Hungary and now lies in the thrid position behind Sweden. Thierry Henry scored in France's 1-1 draw against Serbia, France were reduced to ten men in the match. France lies second in the group with four points behind Serbia.Spain booked their place in South Africa with an expected result against Estonia. Xavi and Pi...

Barca Fans in India to Miss on La Liga Action
2009-09-07 19:42:00
There are reports emerging there is a high chance of the La Liga fans in India missing out on this season's actions. ESPN Star network had the right to telecast La Liga last season. The fans had already missed the opening day matches but was pinning hope of ESPN-Star network bagging the rights late on. But now it looks like that is a non-existent option. ESPN STAR Sports paid 1 million/ year last season for the telecast of La Liga action. In most times they showed deferred and truncated matches; but still La Liga fans were satisfied as they could catch some actions of the same. La Liga matches start late in the night in India and ESPN STAR Sports has decided it does not make economic sense to air the same. Now the only Barca action we will be hoping to catch will be the Champions league actions, which will be aired by Ten Sports and Zee Sports. In India Cricket has more priority than football. Actually a minority watches football matches. Cricket survives because of India and that w...

Messi and Ronaldo, No Match to Maradona's Greatness
2009-09-07 10:06:00
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has been compared to the Argentinian legend 'El Diego' throughout their career. Messi has been brought up as the natural heir to Maradona's throne, while Ronaldo has always maintained the view that he is above all in the world. As far as I am concerned these comparisions are futile and I have stated the same many times earlier. By comparing Maradona to Messi or Ronaldo we are doing a great injustice to the greatness of Maradona and at the same time we are also putting unwanted pressure in these two upcoming stars. The recent showing of these two geniuses in International Match es serves as the perfect example of why we should not compare them to the Legend. At this moment Argentina and Portugal lies in very precarious position in their respective qualifier group. Argentina is dearly holding on to the fourth position but Portugal looks very lost in their attempt to go to South Africa. As far as I am concerned there is a higher chance of Argentina ...
Maradona in Deep Trouble; Will Harry Redknapp Take Notice ?
2009-09-06 16:11:00
Diego Maradona 's term as Argenita's coach ran into deep trouble after his side lost a vital home encounter against arch-rivals Brazil. Brazil defeated Maradona's boy by a score of 3-1 in Rosario. Argentina lies in fourth place at this moment, but Columbia and Ecuador lies just two points behind. Argentina can ill-afford to draw a single of their last three matches now, let alone lose. Argentina's task is made much harder by the fact that they will be travelling to Paraguay and Uruguay for these matches. They will be facing Paraguay on Wednesday and Maradona cannot afford to get his selections wrong there. Messi was the best Argentinian player on the field but was constantly kept under check by a Brazilian defense. Argentinian defense practically looked non-existent and the midfield is struggling in the lack of a creative midfielder. Maradona's only option now looks like using Messi in the midfield to create some moves and having Aguero, Milito and Tevez in the front to finish o...

How Significant is Barca's Super Cup Victories?
2009-08-29 08:39:00
FC Barcelona has added two more silverware with the victories at domestic and European super cup. Some claim this as two more trophies to an already silverware packed last season, whereas some sees this as two more trophies to a bright looking this season; It all depends on how you view it. Last season FC Barcelona comfortably won the Champions League, La Liga and Copa Del Rey title. That made the possibility of competing for six trophies this season. Already we have grabbed two out of the six, but the significance of these two has to be questioned. I have earlier written in a post that a Super Cup victory will not be hailed as a great result but definitely a lose would have asked questioned about the squad and the club. No one in the press or footballing fraternity is going to go over-board with Barca's triump at Spanish Super Cup and UEFA Super Cup. Barca's season will never be termed as a success if they failed to add to these two trophies. Technically this season we have alrea...
Rumours, Rumours Everywhere - Barcelona Closing on Dani Alves
2008-06-06 12:25:00
After weeks of considerable and hard negotiations, Barcelona might be close to signing the Brazilian Right Back. Reports from Spain suggest that Jose Maria del Nido, president of Sevilla, might give go ahead for Barcelona signing Alves. Jose has yesterday suggested that Barcelona's interest in the player makes it difficult for him to keep the player happy in the club, especially in the wake of not qualifying for Champions League. Goal.com suggest that Sevilla demanded 35 million euros but the final deal agreed is aroud 32 million Euros. MundoDeportivo reports that the club might have agreed to leave the player for 32 million as there was a chance of the player invoking the Article 17 of Fifa rules. From the outside 32 million could be considered a bit high for a right back, but Barcelona was desperate to sign a quality right back as Zambrotta will be leaving this season.

Martin Caceres Becomes the third Barcelona Signing
2008-06-05 14:17:00
Martin Caceres has officially become the third player Barcelona have signed this season. The young Uruguay defender was signed for a whooping 16.5 million euros. The 21 tyear old signed a deal which will keep him at Nou Camp for the next four years, which also include a buy-out clause of 50 million euros. Caceres becomes the 11th Uruguayan player to represent Barcelona. Caceres started his club career with Defensor Sporting Club in Montevideo, Uruguay. In february 2007, he was signed by Villareal for five years. Villareal subsequently loaned him out in the 2007-08 season to Recreativo de Huelva. His performance at Recreativo was enough for Barcelona to take notice of him.For Barcelona he represent a long term investment. Usually defenders improve with age and this 21 year old is set to guard Barcelona defense for sometime. With his signing Barcelona can consider to have covered the void left by an injured Milito.

Rumours Rumours Everywhere - Barcelona going in for Inzaghi
2008-06-03 16:04:00
Ok, this one is the latest edition, MundoDeportivo reports that barcelona would be making a surprise move to sign Inzaghi from Milan. The reports suggest that the club is looking forward for signing an alternate striker, who could play the role of an alternate scorer and would come cheap also. The club is planning to sign either Inzaghi or the Argentinian Julio Cruz to fit in to that role. Compared to Cruz I believe Inzaghi would be a better option. But one have to ask about the sense in such a move (if it takes place). Barcelona is reported to be in the last stage negotiations to sign Martin Caceres. His signing could give the cover for Milito who is injured and will be missing the majority of next season. One also have to question the amount of defensive minded signings. Gives me the impression that we are trying buy out our way of trouble like last season. Last season we bought Milito, Yaya and Abidal. This season Pique, Keita and most probably Martin. Barcelona under Guardiola woul...

Rumours, Rumours Everywhere - Dos Santos Moving to Totenham
2008-06-02 08:06:00
Goal.com has broken a story of Barcelona accepting Totenham's bid for the talented Mexican - Giovani Dos Santos . It is reported that Barcelona will receive 8 million Euros from the sale of this wonderful kid. From the beginning of the transfer window, there were lots of rumours of Gio not being in the plans of Guardiola and would be moving on. As a Barcelona fan it saddens me to see one of the Gem from the Barcelona youth system being discarded like this by the club. He has been singled out by Barcelona fans for some rough treatment and the management seems to have overcome by the fan feelings rather than wisdom. I am pretty sure that this kid is going to make Barcelona pay for this stupidity. Juande Ramos, the Totenham Manger however has a different opinion to Barcelona management. He was keen to sign the kid from the moment the news broke out that he may not be in the plans of Guardiola. Giovani is currently recovering from the ankle operation he had in May.Barcelona is very much...

Zambrotta Returns to Italy
2008-06-01 15:04:00
There is no news about this in Barcelona site; but A C Milan has posted on their site that they have officially signed the player. Zambrotta was keen to move to Italy and there was more than usual interest when A C MIlan approached him. Barcelona might be taking their time to announce the signing as there is no positive news about Dani Alves signing. Now with Zambrotta leaving Barcelona may have to buy-out Alves from Sevilla. Zambrotta has been a great player for Barcelona scoring three goals from 80 odd games. But for me his best performance was in Champions League semi finals against Manchester United particularly against Ronaldo. It is rumoured that Barcelona has signed a three year deal in which Milan paid 8.5 million euros to Barcelona. The move to Milan effectively means Zambrotta will miss next season Champions League. Anyway wishing him all the best in his endeavour. But another rather strange rumour which is spreading is due to the apparent failure for Deco and Ronaldinho to...
Barcelona Reportedly Unhappy about Messi Decision
2008-05-28 07:55:00
It is strongly rumoured that Barcelona board is reportedly unhappy about Messi 's decision to represent his country in Beijing Olympics. Barcelona after finishing third has to play the qualifying rounds of Champions League precisely at the same time of Olympics. Barcelona directors wants their start player, Messi to stay with the club rather than go to Beijing. Now this has become a Country versus Club battle. I have wrote about this growing conflict between clubs and country after the formation of European Clubs Association. Messi has categorically stated that he would prefer to go to Beijing and represent his country. It is also rumoured that Lionel Messi?s father has met with Barcelona director Txiki Begiristain to talk about the player?s possible involvement in this summer's Olympics. Does Barcelona really require the presence of Lionel Messi to see them through the Champions League qualification? They have enough star power to see them through regardless of the opponents. But ...

Pique Comes Back To Barca - Is This Necessary?
2008-05-28 07:32:00
Gerrard Pique Bernabeu signed a four year deal with Barcelona which sees him back in the club where he started his youth career. It?s rumoured that Barcelona has to pay a fee of 6 million Euros in order to sign the defender. Gerard Pique has traditionally played in the centre back but can be used as a Left Back or a Defensive Midfielder. His height should give him superiority in the air, which Barcelona is lacking for some time. Pique is the grandson of former Barcelona director Amador Bernabeu. His surname did confuse me because of the similarity with former Madrid president Santiago Bernabeu. Pique was a member of the Barcelona youth team and grew up along with Messi and Fabregas. In 2004 Barcelona was reportedly unhappy and furious with Manchester United snatching him from their hands. Pique dismissed Barcelona's frustration saying that he was ill treated by the club after he decided to move away from Barcelona. Has anybody assured him about a better treatment this time needs to...
Keita Moves To Barcelona
2008-05-27 06:23:00
Now its official, Seydou Keita has become the first Malian to wear a Barcelona shirt. Barcelona paid the 14 million Euros release clause in Keita's contract to Sevilla. He signed the contract which will officially see him in the club until end of June 2012. The release clause has been set at a whooping 90 million Euros. The Mali international has thus become the first signing after Guardiola took charge. He may soon see his team mate Alves joining him at Barcelona. Keita has also become the ninth African player to join Barcelona.Keita started his top flight footballing career in 1999-2000 seasons at Olympique Marseille. But shortly he was transferred to FC Lorient, where he completed his transformation to a quality defensive midfield player. Then he moved to RC Lens in the 2002-03 seasons. The 2006-07 seasons were so productive for him in terms of goals and success - he scored 11 goals in 37 games. But Lens has to let him go reluctantly after Keita reached an agreement with Sevilla...

Are We Being Fair To Giovani?
2008-05-23 11:49:00
Giovani Dos Santos looked like a completely baffled man. At least his recent comments as quoted by media give us an impression of a very confused person. From the moment Barcelona's season started going, all the fingers started pointing on him along with Ronaldinho. It was said that he will never be able to make a switch to first team action. His hardships were increased by the fact that his colleague Bojan, who was promoted along with him, looked like cemented his position. He has scored only four goals throughout the season compared to Bojan's eleven. he could only manage ten La Liga starts compared to Bojan's fourteen. He had to wait till the last game to get into the La Liga goal books, even though he did that is style. Barcelona fans and media are searching for scapegoats at every nook and he appears to be one of their favourite now. Before the start of this season, he was linked to a number of clubs but he came forward and declared that his future is with Barcelona. At that...

Top Three Barcelona Goals of This Season
2008-05-22 15:54:00
Usually when you think about rating the best goals of the season, there always exist a chance that you may go bad, especially with Barcelona . But not this time friends, not this time. It was pretty easy. There were only a handful of goals which can be considered, and picking the best was as easy as it gets. This is my list and if I have missed some please let me know. I have short listed three goals, with Henry, Eto and Ronnie making their presence . Its a pity I could not include the best player of this season - Iniesta in the list. The list starts in the reverse order.3) Third in the list is Eto's goal against Mallorca in a 2-0 victory.2) Henry features on the list at number 2 with this stunning strike against Celtic in that thrilling 3-2 victory.1) Who can be in the top position - Ronaldinho. With this unbelievable goal against Athletico Madrid. Barcelona lost the match 4-2.

Rumours, Rumours Everywhere - Kaka linked to Barcelona
2008-05-15 06:26:00
After a hugely disappointing season, it is not at all a surprise that Barcelona based dailies having already started speculation about which all are coming to the club. But this one was unexpected. Kaka is being linked to a move to Barcelona. El Sport have broken the story of a possible exchange, may be the biggest in any club's history which may involve Ronaldinho and Zambrotta and an additional 20 million Euros for the current world player of the year. This could be ideally another scoop by the daily to thrill their readers, as Milan have not yet showed the slightest hint of letting their hands off Kaka. Moreover they were trying to buy Ronaldinho in order to build a team which revolves around the two great Brazilians. There are indications that Barcelona might even place Deco on the discussion table to tempt Milan in to this move. Whatever, I have to admit that this is one rumour that I loved the most. I don't know whether he will come or not, but just the possibility of seeing...

A Tribute To A Great Gentleman
2008-05-09 07:08:00
I cannot remember a person who has been ridiculed more than Frank Rijkaard in the last two years, on a second thought may be George Bush. With Real Madrid humiliating Barcelona, supporters and media are jointly after him. He could be the most hated person in Barcelona at this moment. With John Laporta announcing yesterday that Rijkaard will be replaced by Pep Guardiola from July 1st; now its time to pay homage to a great gentleman and a wonderful coach who has given us so much. If you give a thought to why he is being ridiculed so much, its all his own mistakes; yes he has done enough managerial blunders, used players in unimaginable positions but that's not what I am referring to. He gave us a team which after a long time was feared and respected across the world, especially in Europe. You want proof, look at the way Manchester United (the in form most attacking team of present) played against an out of form, out of sort Barcelona. If he is being ridiculed for his managerial skil...
