Subplots to get you ready for the season: LeBron James
2007-10-20 18:32:00 Despite the rumors swirling around the media, a trade for Kobe Bryant is unlikely. The asking price seems a tad bit high for John Paxson?s liking. Still, the Bulls don?t need Bryant to win the Eastern Conference. The additions of Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, Zach Randolph, Rashard Lewis, etc. don?t change the fact that the East ... Subplots to get you ready for the season: Joakim Noah
2007-10-18 21:39:00 I left off my last post discussing the possibility of Joakim Noah wrestling the starting power forward position from Tyrus Thomas. While that may or may not be a good thing for the Bulls team, it will definitely take some adjusts for me, because I couldn?t stand Noah at Florida. From the reaction that I ... Subplots to get you ready for the season
2007-10-17 17:45:00 The Bulls? summer was full of rumors, stories, speculation, and little else. Nothing against Joe Smith, but he hasn?t really brought the excitement to training camp that Ben Wallace did before last season. Wallace created hope, he created controversy, and he created some excitement around a young, faceless Bulls squad. When Wallace was signed to a ... More About: Season , Ready , Plot
Wizard whacking at the UC
2007-10-16 17:38:00 The Bulls hammered the Wiz and are looking good so far in preseason. In particular, the starting unit has been winning their minutes from the beginning off preseason, and we’re still playing without our best scorer and an important backup guard (Ben Gordon and Thabo Sefolosha.) Here’s five things I found particularly relevant in Tuesday ... More About: Wizard , Whack
Previewing the Chicago Bulls
2007-10-11 18:31:00 We’re gonna do this in full observance of the blog preview collective style - as I’ve now mentioned a few too many times, I’m taking part in this season preview gig, and we’re all tryin’ to do a similarly formatted thing. In any event, without further ado… Last Years Record: 49-33 Key Losses: PJ Brown, Michael Sweetney Key ... More About: Chicago , Chicago Bulls , Bulls , Chica
Preseason in La Crosse
2007-10-10 19:05:00 I think the most interesting thing I heard from the announcing booth trio of Tom Dore, Stacey King and Johnny “Red” Kerr (or Play-by-play, Analysis, and Old Age, as I like to call them) was that the Bulls and Bucks actually played the first professional sporting event in the La Crosse gym 27 years ago, ... Go for it all Paxson
2007-10-10 01:22:00 On the surface the Bulls have one of the NBA?s brightest futures. Who wouldn?t want a young core with playoff experience? That core only sounds better when you mention that the oldest member, Kirk Hinrich, is only 26. I?m sure that there are a lot of struggling franchises in the ...
Tipping off in anger
2007-10-05 21:39:00 FINALLY. After months of waiting and writing about God-knows-what on this blog, we’ve got some action. The once-empty, echoing Berto Center halls are filled with young Bulls and high expectations. Oh, and Joe Smith. Hate to be the negative nellie around here, but I’m already frustrated and disturbed with some of what we’re hearing out of ... More About: Anger , Tipp
Taking time to appreciate history
2007-10-04 22:05:00 When I was younger I worshiped the Bulls. As an elementary school student in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, I canâ??t remember a book report that I wrote that didnâ??t involve Michael Jordan . In â??91, when the Bulls game started and the Alan Parsons Projectâ??s Sirius came on, my parents would ... More About: History , Time , Charles Barkley , Eddie Robinson
Uh-O(den)
2007-09-16 21:06:00 Take it easy, everybody. I don’t have much to say on this, but I just want to make sure that the cries of “panic!!!” that I’m hearing from Portland are really just a bunch of overexcited, hypercritical media members with little else to write about during the dead period of the NBA offseason. Because let’s be ...
Most Improved Player 2007-08 - The Great Debate?
2007-09-07 23:24:00 In the spirit of finding things to talk about during the deadest of the dead periods in basketball news, we of the MVN b-ball collective are making arguments for most improved player. I may just have broken some unspoken taboo by telling you this, but hopefully the management will overlook my rather minor transgression and ... Blowouts, comeback, no comeback
2007-08-25 00:29:00 As you may have gathered from the title, three basketball news items caught my eye this week. (1) Team U.S.A. is grooving through the Tournament of the Americas. Not much of a surprise, and the first real test is probably Brazil on Sunday (and likely Argentina in the finals - a berth in which guarantees an ... More About: Comeback
National team nonsense
2007-08-17 04:29:00 You may have noticed a continued infrequency of posts, but this is pretty much the slowest time of the year for an NBA psycho like myself… so back the hell off and I’ll post when I feel like it. Seriously, though, there’s no new news. Except that crooked ref thing - I find it tiresome, frankly; not unlike the hullabaloo over Michael Vick. Both seem pretty clear cut to me, particularly Donaghy - he’s a sleazebag cheater and in no way calls into question the rest of NBA referees. I read a report that he picked certain games because of the way he though certain refs felt about particular players– wait! Let me guess… Dick Bavetta likes to put Dwyane Wade on the foul line? Steve Javie thinks Kirk Hinrich is a little too hands-y on defense? Listen, as long as there’s no evidence or indication that these other referees are somehow on the take, I don’t see the problem. And as for Vick… well, this is a basketball blog so I refuse to go... More About: National , Nonsense , Team
No more crush at the top of the East - Celts are new favorites
2007-08-08 03:26:00 It’s been more than a week since my last confession. I admit it… I somewhat hoped - though never believed - that the Bulls would do something in response to the Celtics’ acquisition of Kevin Garnett . Perhaps that’s the root of the delay; or perhaps (perhaps more likely, I should say) I’m just lazy. Either way, the ... More About: East , Chicago Bulls , Boston Celtics , Ray Allen
Relatively meaningless Bulls signings, plus a word on the 800-lb. gorilla?
2007-07-28 00:56:00 The Bulls officially signed Joakim Noah and Aaron Gray today, which is insignificant except that it makes me wonder why they didn’t sign JamesOn Curry yet. Terms not released, as usual, and who really cares - Noah’s contract is specified almost in total by the rookie contract scale, while Gray isn’t likely to earn much ... And then there was roster?
2007-07-20 18:50:00 According to K.C. Johnson - eternal and magical Bulls beat writer, and I mean that very seriously - the upcoming/recent signings of all three draftees to rookie contracts combined with the resigning of Nocioni and the addition of Joe Smith means the roster for the upcoming season is all-but-set-in-stone. And it is… …the roster breaks down ... More About: There , Roster , Then
Getting something done… but is it purely for something’s sake?
2007-07-17 20:17:00 … And does it matter? I have no problem with the signing of Joe Smith. Two years for a total of $10 million is sadly? a relatively small NBA deal in dollars as well as length. And just because Joe Smith is best known as one of the biggest draft busts in NBA history doesn’t make him bad; he’s average, and when you’re picked number one overall and turn out to be an average PF, you’re a HUGE bust. But Smith is more than serviceable. He rebounds, he plays good defense, and he can hit a jump shot. He even has a couple of moves in the low post; he’s not what you might call a low-post scorer, but he does come equipped with a move or two he can employ from the block. In other words, he’s very much like PJ Brown, the operative difference being that he’s about seven years younger. So ultimately the question for me is this: is it a token signing, a way of addressing in the easiest, fastest, cheapest way the single, universally-acknowledged w... More About: Thing , Done , Some
NO-CI-O-NI! clap-clap-clappety-clap
2007-07-09 00:37:00 Five years, $37.5 million. Some other recent contracts: Theo Ratliff - 3 years, $30m; Larry Hughes - 5 years, $60m; Eric Dampier - 7 years, $73m; Adonal Foyle - 6 years, $51.2m; Antoine Walker - 6 years, $53m. I guess what I’m saying is, this is not a bad contract. Those five - and countless others ...
Live Free or Die watching the second round of the NBA Draft?
2007-06-29 18:46:00 Yes, I stopped live blogging at the end of Round 1 last night, and yes- I can accept that it makes me a bit of a pussy. Bulls draft preview [or: please, Pax, let it not be Hawes or Noah]
2007-06-27 21:54:00 The Bulls are in a unique position going into tomorrow’s draft. Thanks to Isiah Thomas’ generosity in the Eddy Curry trade a couple years back, they got the ninth pick in a deep NBA draft despite finishing the season with a 49-33 record and advancing past the first round of the playoffs for the first ... Bulls Get Noc Back, Lose Game However
2007-04-09 14:34:00 Before I talk about last night’s game, I want to go over the positives. Andres Nocioni went through his pregame workouts and finally got the OK to play. Bulls Survive Tough Stretch To Takeover 2 Spot
2007-04-08 22:26:00 When looking ahead to see where the Bull s were going to end up in the playoffs, I thought the five game stretch that the Bulls just completed was going to be the reason they fell to the five seed. Bulls lose to Cavs, but Im Not Worried
2007-04-01 23:10:00 After the Bull s lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers yesterday all of the Bulls haters, which seems to include everyone in the national media, proclaimed that the Bulls do not have enough to win the East and gave several reasons.
