Redskins robble robble robble
2008-05-06 18:58:00
It's been a minute since I've done one of these, so here's what is flossing around the Redskins internet world. First up is Chris Mottram over at Mr. Irrelevant, commenting on the Portis/Landry 500: Portis and Landry had a disagreement during practice over the weekend. The topic of contention: Who is faster. So, they decided to settle the dispute in the safest possible manner: Push their hamstrings to the brink in a meaningless 40-yard race while the Zorn Star was preoccupied with reporters. Incidentally, Landry jokingly said something inaudible about his hamstring after the race. I don't think he was the least bit serious. I can't join Chris in complaint over the way these guys are treating their bodies, first and foremost because these kinds of things make for great print, and secondly because they aren't playing badminton. (Although with all the hamstring injuries from last year, I can't very well blame Chris for his concern either.) Per Redskins 360 comes some info on r...
Surprising candor from Coach Zorn on contracts
2008-05-06 03:02:00
First, in case you missed it, the Redskins started OTAs (Organized Team Activities -- like twister and tag and if no one gets hurt they get capri suns when it is all over with pb and j sammiches (no crusts!!)) sans the rookies. Gary Fitzgerald says: With the three-day mini-camp over, the Redskins moved right into voluntary Organized Team Activity sessions on Monday. Gone were the rookies, 23 in all, and tryout players. Rookies returned to their respective colleges to complete their spring classes. Most will return in early June for a final series of OTA practices. Word on offense growing pains is that the team is struggling slightly with the apparently long snap counts we plan to employ this coming season. If the Seahawks could make it work at Qwest field under the loudest conditions in the NFL, I have every faith we can make good under Coach Zorn on handling our business at scrimmage. Now, if we could just pipe in some crowd noise... Kidding. I think piping in crowd noise is chic...

An exclusive sneak peak at the Redskins playbook
2008-05-05 21:37:00
And by "exclusive" I mean only available to people within traveling distance to a Barnes & Noble and by sneak peak at the Redskins playbook, I really mean probably incorrect interpretation of exactly one play that Jim Zorn ran as quarterback in Seattle circa around 30 years ago. As you may know, I'm in the process of reading Kenny Mayne's new book, An Incomplete and Inaccurate History of Sports. I'm not yet finished, because I haven't taken enough dumps, but so far so good. It's like diet Dave Barry but with more-betterish anecdotes, because they're sports related and Kenny Mayne is famous (my mom thinks Dave Barry is more famous than Kenny Mayne; also that I'm handsome), at least to people like me who were raised by Sports Center in early 90s. Kenny Mayne is from Seattle, which may help explain this video:     Mayne's appreciation for Z-Man is sincere, as he's devoted an entire chapter (term is used liberally; this particular "chapter," for instance, is abo...

Welcome to The Show, Rookie
2008-05-05 09:16:00
Well, new Head Coach Jim Zorn's first mini-camp went without a hitch... except if you consider one of your brand new rookies over-sleeping a hitch. Taking off from where CaptChaosSidekick begins with his so very minimalist "not a good sign," we dive right into the article: "Everybody was scouring," coach Jim Zorn said after the practice. "Nobody heard from him, so there was one of two scenarios: either there was some real trouble and we needed to find him, or he screwed up. I haven’t even got to talk to him yet. I know he has been found. I believe it is more in the ‘I screwed up’ category." That's one way to make a first impression on your new employer. To his credit, Zorn played it off as no big thing... but you have to think that Davis is going to get a firm talking to at the very least. Oh, and its a good thing that it happened in mini-camp... because, uh, I'm sure the veterans on the team will let it go and forget it by training camp. Or, at least by the...

Mini Camp mayhem
2008-05-02 18:42:00
The Redskins started day one of mini camp today (I uhhh... almost missed it) and updates are being posted at light speed by Gary Fitzgerald over at the official site. He does good work and if you take the time to visit, you'll notice, among other things: Jersey numbers for some of the new rookies, though caveated with the knowledge that they may change. Good luck numbers? Devin Thomas sports Mark Rypien's 11. Durant Brooks channels 1950s Redskins hero Eddie LeBaron (traitored to Dallas, though) with #14. We have three additional tight ends working out with the team on a tryout basis. Uhhhhh. We have Chris Cooley, we drafted Fred Davis, we drafted Tyler Ecker a year ago, Todd Yoder played just fine last year, Mike Sellers does whatever he wants all the time because he's awesome... how many tight ends are we going to need Coach? Duran Brooks was the first player on the field. Prediction: Derrick Frost will be the first one off. Speaking of Ecker, injuries are keeping him sidelined...

Chris Cooley represents everything that's good about sports
2008-05-01 22:18:00
If you're really into sports blogs, than you know about the (also see generally here) Buzz Bissinger vs. Leitch battle royale on Bob Costas. The summary: Buzz Bissinger fucking hates blocks and thinks Will Leitch, who is awesome and runs Deadspin, is full of shit. Suffice to say I disagree with Bissinger, but I read his book, Friday Night Lights and really enjoyed it. I had no idea who he was until his rant the other night (even though I'd read his book). In general terms he said blogs are dumbing down America. I think he's absolutely right, that's one of the reasons I love blogs. As a stupid, I hate smart people; they terrify me. I don't want to dwell on Bissinger v. Leitch because it necessarily will evolve into super important blog material that pretty typically bores readers who care about the Redskins more than about newspapers vs. blogs or new media or whatever. But he's not just talking about this dumpy website (and all his criticisms of blogs apply doubleplus to the ra...

Jason Campbell Classic
2008-05-01 18:13:00
Jason Campbell officially a starting quarterback in the NFL now that he has his own golf classic. Redskins 360 is due credit for the story, and other excellent minutiae: Jason Campbell joined a huge list of NFL starting quarterbacks who have their own charity golf tournaments when he hosted the Jason Campbell Classic at Lowes Island Club in Fairfax County... Campbell said Cooley is the best golfer on the Redskins and Frost is a close second. Told of this Frost said that wasn't saying much. And out on the course, I got what Frost was saying. It wasn't pretty. Said Campbell beforehand: "I'm scared for a lot of people standing around these players. A club may fly out of a guy's hands, there might be 10 balls in the water. Some of these guys, it's their first time playing." More is promised in today's Times. Jason also talked briefly about the new wide receivers though his comments are largely predictable; he's happy. Groin injuries were contagious last year preventing us from...

Carlos Rogers injury update
2008-05-01 17:32:00
From the Official Site: Cornerback Carlos Rogers and linebacker Rocky McIntosh are not expected to participate fully in the May 2-4 mini-camp. Both are continuing to recover from knee ligament surgery last year... Rogers is coming off a knee ligament injury suffered in Week 8 last season. He underwent surgery to repair the knee in November. His availability for training camp and preseason is also uncertain. Rogers has targeted the 2008 season opener for his return, though. He said in early March that he was "making progress" with his rehab. I assumed he'd be out much longer than that given the injury, so I'm thrilled to see he has the season opener targeted for return. I remain skeptical of that actually happening, and the story doesn't necessarily lend itself to optimism; players would tend to claim their return as early as possible, but I'd like to hear from some of the coaching or conditioning staff on the matter before I take Rogers' word for it. That said, if he can be g...

2008-05-01 00:14:00
Okay, after a formal request from dr WNC, here is your official post to keep track of who has whom. I'll try to update it as much as possible. As far as what is expected, I'll just steal what I wrote before: ... the program is all about hyping your player [sic] over all the other players, even to the point of over hyping him. Think of it as your chance to be an online Flava Flav (best hype man ever) for your guy. And remember, [Your Player's name]'s future on this team rests on your shoulder. Good luck to you and your player. Here's who I can remember has already taken a player. let me know if I overlooked someone or if you'd like to take a player off the board. Cooley says owners are Pacmanin' it with draft picks
2008-04-30 23:53:00
I didn't know this, but apparently Chris Cooley blogs at the Shutdown Corner part of Yahoo! Sports every Wednesday. This is in addition to his own blog, which is mighty fine reading by the way. His weekly story is called "The Cooley Zone," which is so very lacking in terms of a title. Of all the possibilities, they go with Booty Shorts Anonymous Cooley Zone? Anyway, the reason I bring this up is because this week's story is on how much the NFL rookies, and more specifically the first rounders, are making too much money. He makes a great (and very visual) analogy about the NFL Draft process, specifically the NFL Combine (By the way, don't click the below link if you have just eaten or are weak of heart.): The NFL Combine is comparable to a strip club with owners and coaches for customers. The better the man looks running around in his spandex the more dollar bills end up on his stage. The funny thing is the onlookers at the combine are probably more excited than the creepy...

More Draft Reviews
2008-04-29 23:21:00
Over at Mocking the Draft , MattMiller is going through a team-by-team review of the draft. He goes through each draft pick and sees how they fit the team and all, which is to say, he goes a little deeper than a simple letter grade. Each one does have a poll question up for other commenters to grade each team's draft, so that might be an interesting thing to watch. The bad news: he's going alphabetically, which means he should get around to the Skins by about training camp. But it might be worth the wait, because we'll know more about all the players by then anyway. Atlanta and Arizona are up already, and Baltimore is supposed to be up later today. Also, if you haven't seen them yet, the Redskin Report has two pretty extensive reviews up. The first one (from Lee Gibbons) is here and the second (from Bill) is here. The second review ends with the following: Next year is going to be big for DL players?. and we still have all of our picks. If this is indicative of what we ...

Redskins cut one rapper, draft two more
2008-04-28 19:38:00
As you may recall, Brandon Lloyd was a former aspiring rapper even while he was a former aspiring wide receiver. On his debut album  "Training Day": After practices, on his days off, even between workouts, Lloyd has been writing lyrics, polishing his flow and preparing to release his debut rap album, "Training Day," this summer. "I'm a football player, first and last," Lloyd said. "But I love music, too." Athletes have a long and embarrassing history of musical dabblings, but Lloyd believes he can do better. This 23-year-old, who's also an aspiring sports broadcaster, is an amateur historian of this sub-genre who can cite every significant crossover athlete and the reason he failed. BLloyd, as he's known behind a mike, is determined to learn from the musical misadventures of Deion Sanders, Allen Iverson, Ron Artest and others P all while never forgetting he's a football player first. O R L Y? Your Washington Redskins may have given up on Brandon Lloyd, but they didn't giv...

Devin "Show Time" Thomas
2008-04-28 19:13:00
Let's learn a bit about the Redskins 1st pick of the draft, wide receiver Devin Thomas . First, per DC Sports Bog : That nickname "Show time?" Yeah, he has "Show" tattooed on the back of his left arm, and "Time " tattooed on the back of his right arm. "Sometimes it's 'Show' for short," said his childhood friend, Daynin Blake. "Matter of fact, his car has personalized license plates that say 'Show.' " his father, Dwight, told me. Yup, the new No. 85 has license plates on his black 2004 Ford Taurus that read "Show." "Matter of fact, I'm gonna have to renew that plate in July," Dwight said. "I don't know if you're gonna have to renew that one," Blake pointed out, wisely. We also find out that Thomas informed his father after the draft that he could quit working, he thought we were maroon and gold (he's been coached, I guess) and he anticipates that he will "put some more fire to this offense that already has a lot of fuel." Note: our offense was not all that great last year, wh...

Coach Zorn mentioned that the team had signed, I think, something like 13 undrafted players. Anything reader(s) know of these particular players (perhaps if you're from those regions and catch local CFB) would be much appreciated. Here are the archives at Tomahawk Nation (our Florida State blog) on Shannon Boatman. Redskins offensive assistant Chris Meidt hails from St. Olaf College, which could explain the signing of Horace Grant. Edited ever so slightly, enjoy. 2008 Redskins Draft Recap
2008-04-28 04:22:00
In the next few weeks, there will be some more extensive looks at the draft class, but consider this a first-glance reaction at the draft as a whole. You can check out ESPN's analysis of each pick here, but most of the descriptions, especially of the lesser known late-rounders, is short and lacking. Here's the same type of thing from NFL.com... same problems/positives as the ESPN page. Also, make sure to check out Skin Patrol's FanShots of the newest Redskins ... some of those video clips will make you very impressed. Anyway, on to the reaction. Just based on looking through it all, I'll give it a solid B/B+ grade. According to the Redskins Insider, here's what the team got: That's all folks. They took 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 OL, 1 CB, 2 safeties, 1 DL, 1 punter and 1 QB in all. Looking at the list, you can see that the team got help in a number of different areas. The 2 WRs (Thomas and Kelly), Davis and Rinehart should all compete for a job right away. The CB (Justin Tryon, wit...

[Note by Skin Patrol, 04/27/08 6:30 PM EDT ] With the 249th pick in the draft the Redskins select Chris Horton, safety out of UCLA. He will join Kareem Moore in competing for a spot on the roster, though with only three safeties currently on the team, it isn't unthinkable that both make it. Enjoy guys, and thanks for spending the draft here. [Note by Skin Patrol, 04/27/08 6:11 PM EDT ] With the 242nd pick of the draft the Redskins select Rob Jackson, DE out of Kansas State. Defensive End was a need and we finally, mercifully addressed it, although this late in the draft there is very little guarantee that Rob will be with the team for long, but best of luck to him. [Note by Skin Patrol, 04/27/08 3:54 PM EDT ] With the 186th pick the Redskins select Colt Brennan, QB out of Hawaii. We have a Hawaiin Redskins fan on hte site who I am sure is absolutely thrilled with the pick. Guy had sick production in College albeit against lesser talents, the main criticism of him being that he'...

Day 1 Recap
2008-04-27 03:29:00
Okay... suffice it to say that the draft went a little different than anyone expected. Yes, they traded down like HogsHaven reader Dr WNC (and my fellow blogger Skin Patrol) wanted, but after that it took a different turn. But first, meet your newest Washington Redskins: WR Devin Thomas, Michigan State TE Fred Davis, Southern Cal WR Malcolm Kelly, Oklahoma Thomas was probably the best WR in the draft and the Skins got him in the second round. I like this pick. He's a bigger WR (6'2, 216) who is still developing. He really had the one season at Michican State (he was a JuCo transfer) but he did well. He'll immediately make the team able to run the 3 WR sets that Holmgren used in Seattle. I'm not as familiar with Fred Davis... mostly because I didn't think the team would be drafting a TE, especially early. I was happy with the Cooley-Yoder combo, and with Tyler Ecker coming back after a year on IR, I thought the TE position was set for years to come. But then comes Fre...

2008-04-26 23:34:00
[Note by TexSkins, 04/26/08 4:47 PM CDT ] The ESPN Draft Cast shows that the Skins have both the Falcons 2nd round picks. I still haven't seen an official round-up of that trade. That would be picks #3, #17, and #20 (their original one) in the second round. [Note by TexSkins, 04/26/08 4:52 PM CDT ] I just saw that they also picked up the Falcons 4th rounder. Same source. [Note by TexSkins, 04/26/08 4:56 PM CDT ] Final note on this. The Redskins traded their #1 (#21 overall), #3 (#84 overall), and #5 (#154) for the two #2s of Atlanta, and Atlanta's #4. I don't like it. So, now they pick at #34, #48, #51, #96, #103, #186, #228, #242, and #249. a trade with the Falcons. Interesting draft thus far, so this pick kinda takes me by surprise. Not because of what the Skins did, but because of what everyone else did. Talib at #20 with Jenkins still on the board? Trading up to #18 for the second QB? Giving away a future first rounder for Jeff Otah? Color me shocked. ESPN has ...

And the moment we've all been waiting for... HH's Mock Draft
2008-04-25 18:27:00
Okay, so I'm playing it up a little. Well, a lot of a little. Anyway, it's high time I threw my hat in the proverbial mock draft ring. I've been meaning to do this mock for a while... but more imprtant things always seemed to come up. Like drinking. And sleeping. And, well, everything that came up. Mostly, a whole lotta nothing. Anyway, without further ado... I bring you the 2008 Hogs Haven Mock Draft . I should get a sponser... it always makes names seem more official. Anyways, the normal rules apply. I'm assuming no trades, though I fully expect a trade or seven on Saturday. 1. Miami - OT Jake Long, MICH - Everyone deserves a freebee in this thing. 2. St. Louis - DE Chris Long, UVA - Alongside last year's first rounder Adam Carriker and St. Louis has a defensive line that just won't quit. 3. Atlanta - DT Glenn Dorsey, LSU - Matt Ryan would make sense... but they need so much help everywhere. Best player theory says Dorsey. 4. Oakland - RB Darren McFadden, ARK - Al ...

This is a Redskins draft open thread
2008-04-25 17:12:00
We're about 24 hours away from the draft so I thought I'd get this thing going early. First, let me apologize for the website being down yesterday. It's out of my control but was a not-too-unexpected hiccup when you're migrating hundreds of websites from one platform to another. I'm assured that everything is being watched extremely carefully to both prevent future down time and also to expedite getting us back online more quickly should the problem recur. I beg for patience. Who are we going to draft? Consider this your thread to speculate endlessly in the comments section. Who knows? Actually, as CptChaosSidekick points out in a diary, though, at least one NFL commenter is fairly deterministic about the direction we're going: Redskins narrow choices: The Redskins seem to be making one last check before selecting Oklahoma wide receiver Malcolm Kelly or Clemson defensive end Phillip Merling. A good portion of the Redskins' front office jumped on Dan Snyder's plane and visit...

Moving up in the draft?
2008-04-25 17:01:00
Not necessarily with the 1st pick, mind you, but the team has a proven willingness for trading up to get mid round picks they have targeted. For example: In 2004, the Redskins had targeted tight end Chris Cooley as a third-round talent. Problem: the Redskins didn't have a third-round pick. Problem solved: the Redskins traded a 2005 second-round pick to be able to draft Cooley with the 81st pick in the third round.   The rest is history. Remember we did the same thing to get Rocky McIntosh: To obtain McIntosh, the Redskins traded the 53rd pick in the second round of this year's draft, the 189th pick in the sixth round of this year's draft and a second-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft . I thought that worked out too. As Gary Fitzgerald tells us , we may do something similar this weekend: [T]eam officials would have no qualms about trading up in the mid-rounds of the draft. "We have always been an aggressive team, so if there is somebody there that we like, we have made eff...

Redskins 360: Redskins made offer for Roy Williams
2008-04-23 19:39:00
Well now I'm just getting repetitive, but add Detroit WR Roy Williams to the list of players the Redskins made deals for. As David Elfin reports, emphasis added: A Redskins source said that Bengals star Chad Johnson isn't the only receiver about whom the team has inquired about acquiring. But as with Cincinnati, which rejected Washington's offer of the 21st pick in this weekend's draft and a conditional third-rounder in 2009, Arizona and Detroit turned down overtures regarding Anquan Boldin and Roy Williams , respectively. He notes that such inquiries aren't going to do much good, though, since Detroit says Williams is off the market. Of the three, though, I'd actually be happiest with Roy Williams. He's the youngest, lacks the degree of current contentiousness with his current team in Chad Johnson, and (as far as I can tell, though I don't follow him closely) isn't willing to turn down a top 3 WR contract as was apparently the case with Boldin. All wishful thinking, becau...

ESPN: Redskins made offer for Anquan Boldin
2008-04-23 19:14:00
First, huge hat tip to dr WNC for getting this up in a diary earlier. His thoughts: When the majority of Fans look at the Redskins team roster, the roster which all 22 starters are returning, most say the need is for a large WR.  It appears based on another report today the Redskins are exploring options with other NFL teams. "other" NFL teams because we took a stab at getting Chad Johnson from the Bengals, unsuccessfully. The emerging picture is one where the team is committed to getting a proven wide receiver in free agency and isn't afraid to shop around to do so. The question is whether they can get the guy they want before the upcoming draft? Time is running out, and surely if we need a WR before the draft (but can't get one) we'll need one during, which would have a profound impact on how and who we select this weekend. The story per ESPN: The Arizona Cardinals have no interest in dealing wide receiver Anquan Boldin , despite trade inquiries from other teams and a tr...

Chris Cooley: Mormons don't golf on Sundays
2008-04-23 18:57:00
Nearly everything Chris Cooley says is interesting and a recent post at Shtudown Corner by my favorite player proved no different. I listen when he discusses the relatively uninteresting story of a Reebok photoshoot so you can be damn sure I'm paying attention when he's discussing the draft from a player's perspective. And, in honor of this being the week of the Draft, I'll give you a few of my favorite snippets from the article, but encourage you all to check out the piece in its entirety. Enjoy: I figured a little golf was much more relaxing. As it turned out golfing on a Saturday in Logan, Utah is a popular event. I made the rounds to four different courses, striking out at all of them. If the first round could have been Sunday it would have worked out great for me. No Mormons golf on Sunday, I would have had the course to myself. I think Bill Parcells is, was, and will forever be a phenomenal coach. Even when he was in Dallas I had enormous respect for him for what he'd man...

Florio: Redskins may have tampered
2008-04-22 20:03:00
I don't think this story is remotely close to having legs yet as there isn't any indication that the team illegally discussed anything with Chad Johnson, but it should get noted anyways. In two posts at PFT Mike Florio accuses the Redskins of tampering in strong language. First: Here’s our take on all of this — the Bengals should be very concerned about the possibility of tampering.  The Redskins have enjoyed over the years a very strong relationship with Drew Rosenhaus, Johnson’s agent.  And it is believed by some league observers that Chad’s campaign to be traded arose not from his zeal to wear a new uniform but from his desire to stuff more money into his pockets.  Thus, if the Redskins were willing to make such a strong and specific offer for Johnson, it’s hard not to think that they have an idea as to the contract extension that Johnson (via Rosenhaus) would accept. And that, of course, would be tampering. And...

The future is never: Redskins allegedly offer two first round picks for a 3
2008-04-22 18:58:00
Who happens to have a bad attitude. Typically I'd just promote this prescient diary by CptChaosSidekick as it captures my thoughts on the deal. His words bear repeating: The fact that this even went down really pisses me off. I continue to be amazed at how little the Redskins value the draft. Chad Johnson is an amazing talent but to keep fleecing our picks away is fucking annoying. What is it that went down exactly? As ESPN tells the story... How serious are the Cincinnati Bengals about not giving in to Chad Johnson's trade demands? Serious enough to swat away an offer from the Washington Redskins that could have netted the Bengals two first-round draft picks, team and league sources said. The Redskins offered its first-round pick, No. 21 overall, and a conditional third-rounder in 2009 that could escalate to a first rounder if Johnson and the Redskins hit certain performance levels, the sources said. So forgive a slightly misleading title. While it might've been the case ...

Redskins with 3 of the worst draft busts in history
2008-04-21 23:17:00
At least that's the word per ESPN (hat tip: Cincy Jungle). And they are: 4. QB Heath Shuler (Tennessee) Draft ed by: Redskins , first round, No. 3 overall, 1994Shuler started eight games as a rookie and certainly didn't look like an immediate bust, throwing 10 TDs and 11 interceptions. However, over the next three years with the Redskins and Saints, he would throw 21 interceptions to just five touchdown passes. He was out of the league by 1998. 32. T Andre Johnson (Penn State) Drafted by: Redskins, first round, No. 30 overall, 1996The Redskins have had more than their fair share of poor draft picks, but this tops them all. Johnson did not appear in a game for the Skins during his rookie season and was cut during the summer of 1997. And finally: 50.
