Shawn Springs... the safety?
2008-04-21 19:17:00
I will not stop repeating it. Go read this. Last year rumors surfaced that a move of Shawn Springs to safety was a serious possibility for a team that had not yet drafted Landry. A year later and we're without Sean Taylor which has prompted the rumors to return. Per Redskins Insider: Team sources said there is strong sentiment within the organization that the best move for the Skins D would be to move corner Shawn Springs to safety, to mentor and play alongside young stud LaRon Landry. Although Jason goes on to note that we really can't afford to do so, at least to open the season. Carlos Rogers is injured, substantially thinning our cornerback unit. Without Rogers we're with Springs/Smoot/Torrence through nickel, and Torrence doesn't strike me as a reliable #2 guy if we were to move Springs to safety. Additionally, Reed Doughty is not a utility player and cannot be moved to cornerback. Someone needs to adopt Byron Westbrook because he's going to see this roster, mark...

Hogs Haven selects Chilo Rachal
2008-04-21 18:50:00
First and foremost, make sure you check out all the info provided on the site's new layout here. The information there is clutch and should assist you all in navigating this brave new world we call Hogs Haven . Second, I was out and about this weekend which conveniently freed me of all accountability in the SB Nation Mock Draft. Duties were left to the extremely competent -- and probably more qualified on draft related matters anyways -- TexSkins, who went with Chilo Rachal, offensive guard out of USC. TexSkin's reasoning went, in part, something like this: Basically, we took the best player on the board who happens to fill a need.  If he doesn't start right away, he will be starting either by the end of the year or going into next season and should fill one of the two G spots for a long time.  He still has an upside and I see him being a very good G for the Redskins for a very long time. Works for me; offensive line is one of our major needs. If I had it to do al...
Welcome to the new Hogs Haven and SB Nation
2008-04-21 09:03:00
[Note by Skin Patrol, 04/21/08 12:40 PM EDT ] Thanks again to Trei for setting us up. If you have any questions, please follow the contact info below or email me at hogshaven@yahoo.com. There are too many awesome new features to mention now, and Trei covers most of them, but I want to stress two for the moment: Autosave on posts, comments, and etc. which will greatly decrease the likelihood that I suffer stress related heart attacks in the future, and integrated stats. You will now be able to accses all the info about players that you would have formerly needed to check from an NFL.com. That is the business. We'll be exploring this together so stay with me. Some of the changes are dramatic and will take some getting used to. Remember that, perhaps moreso than any of you, I was married to the old format for about a year and a half. I'm always reluctant to change but appreciate that this is an upgrade that took an enormous amount of work and was effected for my benefit. One of the a...

The 2008 Adopt-a-Redskins Debate
2008-04-19 00:22:00
My fellow HogsHavenites, This is a crucial time for our nation.  Never before has your support been needed any greater than it is today.  Recently, my fellow blogger Skin Patrol advocated Pete Schmitt and supported him as part of his Adopt -a-Redskin program.  Now, while I feel that this program is a worthy venture, I do not want you to be decieved by his strong support for Schmitt. I say this because, as recently as a few weeks ago, Skin Patrol had been expressing the merits of one Anthony Mix and as recently as a month ago, he expressed his (and I quote) "irrational faith" in Mr. Mix as becoming a fine player for your -- no, our -- beloved team. But, when pressed, he flip-flopped his advocation for Mr. Mix in favor of Mr. Schmitt, and then tried to hide his deed by immediately calling for a Blogwar with Mr. Lee Gibbons over at The Redskin Report.  I ask you... what kind of man tries to cover up his wrongs by going to an unnecessary war of his own making? Now, I ...

You won't recognize me when I return
2008-04-18 08:08:00
That's the blog talking to you. Heavy shit, I know. I am out for the weekend and the fort shall be held down by TexSkins in my absence. The big news this weekend is that you guys need to help him in selectin the Redskins next pick in the SB Nation Mock Draft. Maybe I'll be around. Probably not. In even bigger news, this place is getting changed dramatically next week. Hogs Haven is due for a serious face lift come Monday, I've heard morningish. The new site will look more like this except for the fact that Athletics Nation is the flagship SB Nation Blog and the content there is way better and more than 7 people read it and so it really won't look all that much like this except for the new glitz and glamor. The migration is a huge deal that I am neither apt nor willing to get into now. We are going to explore the changes together, as most of its effects relate directly to how much more easily I can communicate with you clowns. I should have a post up on Monday describing some ...

Scott Campbell one of the most important people at Redskins park
2008-04-18 03:33:00
And did you know it? Own up. As of January of this year Scott Campbell became one of the most important people with the Redskins : Campbell, who has spent the past seven seasons with the Redskins, will oversee scouting at both the college and professional levels. He had previously led both college and professional recruiting. The syntax in the sentence suggests that he received a non promotion promotion, but what I think they are trying to say is that he previously handled college scouting and pro scouting separately at different times in his career, and that he's finally now in charge of both all at once. Incidentally, this makes him an extremely influencial (and accountable!) person at Redskins park. With a hat tipped towards PFT, the Post today called Campbell Vinny Cerrato's Draft Day Lieutenant. It goes farther: A Redskins player-personnel official since 2001, Campbell, 46, was recently promoted to oversee Washington's college and pro scouting, and he will have a major role i...

Redskins perpetually interested in Chad Johnson
2008-04-17 23:55:00
I predict this will be the Lance Briggs story of this year, the player acquisition rumor that never seems to go away and has enough bits of truth mixed in with the generic Redskins -love-to-spend storyline that it's too good not to be true. First: An infuriated Chad Johnson has all but declared war on the team that holds his contract. He will not be reporting for any team functions, practices or games... As for where Johnson is going, rumors and misinformation abound. The Washington Redskins are drooling over an opportunity to pick up Johnson, and conspiracy theorists believe there may be a secret deal in progress. Johnson has lobbied off season for a possible trade to the Cowboys. The Cowboys have not made a public offer at this point, however. As Redskins Insider points out: As I wrote about months ago, Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato have a thing for Chad Johnson . It was a staple of their interviews with head coaching candidates. He would fill what they believe to be the biggest voi...
Mock Draft round 2: Hogs Haven needs YOU
2008-04-17 23:26:00
TexSkins thinks we're going to be picking in the SB Nation Mock Draft sometime around Saturday, so it's time to start thinking about who we should select. He produced this list of possible moves: I think we need to go DL, OL, or WR.  That's pretty obvious.  Some names I've got: DL  Ellis (DE) (Va Tech) Jackson (DE) (USC) Bryant (DT) (A&M) Okam (DT) (UT) OL Rachal (G) (USC) Schuening (G) (Oregon St.) WR Hardy (Indiana) Add your own in the comments section, with justifications. A somewhat current list of the players taken thus far is on the left hand sidebar of Mocking the Draft. I really feel like holding out for Jordy Nelson in the 3rd round, though in a phone conversation TexSkins suggested the idea of taking Nelson early just to make sure, and I wasn't totally against it. Hardy would make a fine receiver, too. I like anyone high on the O-Line list and though I'm personally more inclined to take a DE than a DT, word is that Greg Blache really wants an inter...

Quickly, Mr. Irrelevant eloquently captures my own delayed reaction to the schedule: Initial Reaction: Fucking A. All three of our divisional road games fall within the first five weeks of the season. Bullshit. Secondary Reaction: No, seriously. How the fuck do they schedule the Skins at N.Y. in Week 1, then at Dallas and at Philly, back-to-back, in Weeks 4 and 5? Bullshit. That same stretch was rough enough to get Head Coach Jim Zorn's attention and could very well get the attention of Redskins nation should the team find itself in an early season winning deficit. We always do best ~ 5-6, though, right? You can also find schedule reactions here, here, here, and here. Also, the NFL failed in scheduling the Cowboys last Texas Stadium regular season game against someone besides the Redskins. Epic, epic fail NFL. Someone should go make a diary about it. Be civil. Besides the early grueling road schedule, the big word is our three prime time games: The Redskins open the season for the ...

Santana Moss must be saved from himself
2008-04-16 20:26:00
Tanaman is of such physical superiority over the competition that he presents a danger even to himself each and every time he steps on a field and accelerates. Jason Campbell said it: "Santana took a different approach to the offseason," Campbell said. "He is such a fast athlete, and whenever you run as many routes as he runs, you tend to put more wear and tear on your legs. This year, we told him to take more time off to get his legs back healthy. Last year, he was fighting so many problems. "Today, Santana came out and caught passes with us and he looked smooth. He looked like he was right back in the thick of things again. We just told him not to overdo it. The worst thing would be for him to overdo it right now and it affects him later on in the year. Everybody knows how important Santana is to this team." I am no sports scientist so will not speculate on the accuracy that a player being faster means he's more likely to get injured, though increased reps would tend to increase ...

My amigo at Behind the Steel Curtain hosted an Adopt-A-Steeler program last year where he had reader(s) pick specific Steelers players and focus on them during games. A sampling: Can readers please select one Steelers player and keep their eyes on him as much as possible. Consider it an 'Adopt-a-Steeler' activity: you pick a Steeler, watch for what he's done well and not so well during the game, then report the following day on what you saw. Your adopted Steeler will remain with you for the remainder of the season. I think this would allow us to get more detailed info on what specific individual players are doing throughout the course of each game and the progress they may or may not be making throughout the season. It's simply hard to evaluate 11 guys at once when you're watching a game, no? I think it's a grand idea that lends itself to the offseason where actual information is in short supply thus necessitating, for content...

Do we need a linebacker?
2008-04-15 19:55:00
Not much emphasis has been placed on acquiring a linebacker in the upcoming draft but perhaps that has been in error. The team has gone as far as scheduling a visit from at least one linebacker. Per the Post: Since early last week, Zorn and Vinny Cerrato, executive vice president of football operations, and their staffs have met for about 16 hours a day, reviewing videotapes of players and discussing options, Cerrato said. Washington, which holds the 21st pick in the April 26-27 draft, also has scheduled visits this week with draft-eligible players. Former Oklahoma wide receiver Malcolm Kelly and former Tennessee linebacker Jerod Mayo are among the players the Redskins plan to host. The Kelly invite comes as no surprise as the team is in obvious need of a larger receiver to complement Santana Moss and bolster an underachieving receiving unit. Malcolm Kelly fits that bill. But Jerod Mayo? Marcus Washington, London Fletcher, and Rocky McIntosh make up a solid unit for the immediate fu...

NFC East
2008-04-14 20:18:00
[editor's note, by Skin Patrol] Promoted. Thanks to dr WNC for his thoughts on all things Redskins. Edited ever so slightly. NFC East , The toughest division in Football The NFC East in my "homer" outlook is the toughest Division in the NFL. ([editor's note, by Skin Patrol] Agreed.)  All teams are very competitive year in and year out with most years at least one, sometimes two, NFC wild card teams coming from the East. Superbowl Champion Giants, 3 playoff teams 3 playoff teams 2 playoff teams 1 playoff team 2 playoff teams 2 playoff teams 1 playoff team 2 playoff teams And overall this decade has been the weakest for the NFC East. The last two years the division has placed 3 teams into the playoffs, with that trend looking to continue in 2008. There are a lot of factors which play into a team's success, including the schedule they play year to year (against division foes), injuries, offensive production compared to defensive production, coaching and ...
Still nothing going on... so how about a poll?
