March 31st is Christmas! (Redskins awarded three compensatory picks)
2008-04-01 00:03:00
[editor's note, by Skin Patrol] Promoted by popular demand, and also because this is huge good news for the team. Edited slightly, cropped some of the Redskins Insider quote. Here's to turning that extra third rounder into another Chris Cooley caliber player. Thanks to CptChaosSidekick for the post, and his enthusiasm is contagious. HTTR Per Insider: Redskins Get Three More Picks From Maske at the owners' meetings: The Washington Redskins were awarded three additional picks in the NFL draft in April, including a third-rounder, today. The league announced the compensatory draft choices awarded based on a formula balancing players lost and added in free agency. The Redskins were awarded the highest of the compensatory selections, the 96th overall pick in the draft. Their other two compensatory choices come in the seventh round, Nos. 242 and 249 overall. I say again...look below! "The Redskins were awarded the highest of the compensatory selections, the 96th overall pick i...

A coach was too expensive for Daniel Snyder
2008-03-31 21:36:00
Crazy thought, huh? Amid allegations that Vinny Cerrato is responsible may get lost the fact that the Redskins interviewed a lot of head coaching candidates, and some of them priced their way out of town. For instance: The Redskins had to wait until the Super Bowl was played to interview their final candidate, Giants defensive coordinator Spagnuolo. After Spagnuolo announced on Thursday that he'd rather stay with the Giants -- who gave him a new three-year, $6 million contract -- Snyder said he invited Zorn to lunch. That's a pretty good little paycheck for Spagnuolo. To give you an idea of how much the Redskins have paid for coaches, remember that this one time the Redskins...: Steve Spurrier, jumping from college football to the pros, will start out as the highest-paid coach in the NFL before calling a single play. The deal he signed with the Washington Redskins will pay him $25 million over five years. The Redskins announced Spurrier's hiring Monday, a day after Marty Schotten...

Public urination is an awesome crime
2008-03-31 20:00:00
The actual news today is that the Redskins signed Pete Schmitt. That's actually about four days old news but it's worth noting late because... Schmitt is a 6-3, 252-pounder who spent the 2007 training camp with the Redskins. He suffered a shoulder injury in preseason and was released with an injury settlement... Schmitt is expected t o compete for playing time with Tyler Ecker, another first-year player. Ecker was the Redskins' seventh-round draft pick in 2007, but he spent the year on injured reserve. This serves as a good refresher on the status of Tyler Ecker, our last draft pick in 2007. Unfortunate injury sidelined him but did provide ample opportunities for Todd Yoder to shine as Chris Cooley's Robin. (Perhaps an inappropriate analogy, since Sammy Baugh may have claim to being Batman.) Also a refresher that Batman is wise: Robin, looking at Batgirl: "You know something, Batman?" Batman: "What's that, Robin?" Robin: "She looks very pretty when she's asleep." Batman: "I th...

First, today is the opening day of the 2008 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft. Let's get it on... (Image from here.) Be sure to check out Mocking the Draft regularly over the next few weeks as they go through two full rounds (and maybe a third depending on time restraints) of their mock draft.  The Miami pick is already in the books, so expect the first post to be up very soon.  The Rams are, as they say, on the clock.  Good stuff. -  -  - In related mock draft news, the Mile High Report version is already underway.   Who wins for best Mock Draft logo? (Image from here.) Stay tuned for the Skins' pick, which should be up in the next few days.  Unlike the SBN Mock Draft, the Mile High Report's version allows for trades, which is already making things interesting.   (Philly trading into the top 5???  You must be out your mind.)  It is, as they say, in full swing. (P.S.  With all these mock drafts underway, it might be high time for the ...

Update [2008-3-30 20:34:50 by Skin Patrol]: I'm in a diary promoting mood today and want to reward reader(s) for keeping an eye on the shop in my absence (had to go to an engagement party -- been driving for over 7 hours today). I should promote this diary by dr WNC as well but may run out of time to do so. In any event, do yourself a favor and visit. I like this experiment and will hopefully get my thoughts in the comments below. Thanks to CptChaosSidekick, who is still owed a free copy of Redskins Encyclopedia, which I will send out soon. Edited slightly... What is the best pick in Redskins history of value? IE: Not including the obvious Art Monk, Darrell Green, Champ Bailey, and other 1st rd picks. NFL Network ran a "Top Ten Drafts of All Time" Your redskins made #7 with their 1981 draft. probably our best draft: 1st rd we picked Mark May, T, Pitt 3rd rd Russ Grimm  G Pitt (birth of the Hogs) 5th Dexter Manley  DE Oklahoma State (all Time team sackmaster) 8...

Hogs Haven Reader Mock Draft #1
2008-03-31 03:29:00
[editor's note, by Skin Patrol] Promoted to the front page because I want to encourage reader(s) to do additional mock drafts. I very much appreciate Justin taking the time to do this and hope others will as well. I want to get as much feedback and info as possible on who the team should draft, so that TexSkins and I can correctly draft in the upcoming SB Nation Mock Draft . Enjoy, edited slightly but not substantively. Well, since it appears that my next post won't be for about two weeks I figured ot do my first mock early, then another in mid-April.  Some of this stuff may seem a bit unorthodox or downright strange...but the draft is just that every year, to some degree. MIA-CHRIS LONG-closest to a sure thing they'll get.  he can play DE or OLB in a 3-4. Good vs. Evil... THE SEQUEL: Redskins v. Giants in season opener
2008-03-27 19:17:00
The first game of the Redskins season will also be the first of the NFL's 2008 season. Per NFL.com: The NFL's Thursday night season opener will match the Super Bowl-champion New York Giants and the Washington Redskins, with the game possibly starting an hour-and-a-half earlier to avoid clashing with the Republican National Convention. The game is now scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EDT on Sept. 4 -- the concluding night of the Republican convention -- and will be televised by NBC. League spokesman Greg Aiello said Wednesday that the NFL is talking with the network about changing the game's starting time to 7 p.m. Which will give us a few extra days of rest for Week 2, so we'll be better prepared to open the season 2-0 (because we're going to win, see?). Story also up at Redskins Insider, Big Blue View, and Hog Heaven, among others (sorry if I'm leaving you out). As Michael David Smith notes, the timing could be bad for the Republican Convention: The NFL will most likely back down an...

Offensive Linemen and the Draft
2008-03-27 04:15:00
Update [2008-3-27 1:19:35 by TexSkins]: A few things from ESPN. First, this article about how the GOP convention might interfere with football. (The Skins - Giants season opener is on the same Thursday night.) I wonder which one would get more viewers? And second, ESPN had their nightly "On the Clock" segment for the Redskins, and Mel Kiper brought up three names: Harvey, Talib, and Sweed. He said that he thought Sweed was more of a round 2 pick (which I totally agree with), he said that Talib might be the guy there for the pick, and he said if Harvey is there, you gotta take him. And that is why Mel is the Draft Man. More on the draft tomorrow. G'night. P.S. Mike Tirico closed with nice parting shot about how it will be nice hearing from the Skins on draft day "for a change." You win this round, Tirico. I've been saying for a while now that other than a franchise Left Tackle, almost all Offensive Linemen should be drafted in the later rounds of the draft.  H...
Redskin cracks top 10 receivers of all time list
2008-03-26 19:16:00
I'm busy so I need to keep this short. Mike Sando at ESPN asked a panel of experts -- justified at the bottom of the article -- who the best wide receivers of all time were. A Redskin cracked the top 10, but probably not the guy you're thinking of: 6. CHARLEY TAYLOR Career: Played for Redskins 1964-77. All-time leading receiver with 649 catches for 9,110 yards when he retired. Elected to Hall of Fame in 1984. Quick quote: "Those types of athletes who played more than one position --- Charley Taylor -- are worth the price of admission just to see them line up. That is an athlete right there, a subject in itself." -- [Raymond] Berry Art Monk came close: Among those left on the outside, Art Monk, [Raymond] Berry and James Lofton came closest to cracking the top 10... Monk drew two top-five selections, topped by a No. 4 ranking from Johnson. Three other panelists left off Monk entirely. Johnson, the youngest panelist by a wide margin, steered clear of ranking players from earlier e...

National Media not as positive but elsewhere...
2008-03-26 18:24:00
[editor's note, by Skin Patrol] Promoted from diaries because it was a very well thought out piece from dr WNC that I happen to agree with, and also because I'm quite busy right now. Edited slightly. Enjoy. ESPN and others may be confused but local magazines and Bleacher Report seem to understand the Redskins' offseason. The Washingtonian: After spending free-agency money like a drunken sailor with little to show for it, the Washington Redskins owner may finally be growing out of his fan phase--as in "Let's sign Deion Sanders--he's a star!" The Redskins have been wallflowers at this year's free-agency dance. The article starts off well, stretches a little by bringing up the tired but not true "team already capped out" phrase. It does follow that statement with the VERY important aspect of the Washington Redskins off season which too many national media and others seem to ignore: "every starter signed for next year". The article provides a very good review of where th...

Reche Caldwell to the Rams
2008-03-25 21:38:00
The story from ESPN's Roundup is here.  He had a minimum salary offer from the Redskins and got a little more from the Rams. Former Redskin CB David Macklin signed with the Rams last week.  This seems to bode well for the Redskins drafting a wideout, but will it be in the first round?  Don't forget to hit up the poll in the SP Question post about the first round pick. That's it for now.
Skin Patrol's Question about the Draft
2008-03-25 20:48:00
He brought it up earlier, and I thought I'd just get everyone's input.  The SBN's Mock Draft is fast approaching (as in less than a week folks) and the draft is less than a month away, so let's get it started. What position do you feel needs to be addressed in the first few rounds?  The SBN version is going 2 rounds, so what are your top 2 picks by position.  I say by position because it will be very hard to predict who is on the board still at pick #51. Anyway, hit up the poll, let us know what you think.  Also, comments are always encouraged.

Recapping the 2007 NFL Draft and HH's poor Mocking
2008-03-25 19:34:00
I was looking back at the mock draft I put together a year ago and it doesn't look good.  Well, at least I got the first pick right.  But after that, teams did some things I never would have thought.  Like Detroit taking another WR in the first round (Calvin Johnson) or the Skins not taking a Defensive Lineman.  Check out the page and laugh.  It is that ugly. I did get it right about Quinn... well, kinda.  I had Miami taking him but my comment was "if he falls past here, he falls for a while, a la Aaron Rogers in Green Bay."  And my comment about the Browns at #3 was that "I think QB Quinn might get some thought here as well."  So... I got it half right.  It kinda handcuffs mock drafters to be unable to even conceive draft day trades, especially since they happen a lot. I had the Jags taking Jarvis Moss at #17... but Denver traded to take him at that spot.  I count that as a victory.  I had the Giants taking Aaron Ross at #20...

Awfully needy 9-7 team
2008-03-25 19:32:00
Matt Williamson at ESPN writes: Redskins have a new head coach and lots of draft needs. The title shouted at me, since I was of the opinion that we didn't have that many serious needs, as we have in years past. But, to Williamson's credit, I think he does a fine job of explaining just where the team is at and where it isn't, even if the title perhaps overstates the case. He says... Washington could go a lot of different ways with its early draft selections. However, that is both good and bad. The Redskins are not pigeon-holed into one glaring position of need so that should allow them to take the best athlete available, but that also is a sign that Washington could use help in a lot of areas. Washington could use a safety, line help and probably another cornerback on defense. They could also use offensive line depth and a big wide receiver, which is probably their most prominent need if we had to choose just one. The other obvious remaining question is how Zorn will handle his ne...

Zack Bolno is "Executive Director of Communications"
2008-03-25 19:01:00
Per the Official Site: The Washington Redskins announced March 24 that they have named Zack Bolno as the Executive Director of Communications . Bolno joins the Redskins after spending the past four seasons (2004-08) as the Director of Public Relations for the Washington Wizards... During his tenure, the Buccaneers public relations department received the esteemed Pete Rozelle Award in 1997 and 2002, presented annually to the NFL's top media relations department. The Wizards have branded their team phenomenally in the Washington area and I have to imagine much of that is due to Zack Bolno. Speaking of the Wizards, spend more time at Bullets Forever. Says Ryan O'Halloran of the Times: Expressing an opinion on the hire, this is a positive move by the Redskins. While disappointed they parted ways with Helein, I think it's important they hired a person who a) has knowledge of the D.C. media/sports scene, b) had run their own shop with another team and c) had previous NFL experience...
Fabini Is Staying
2008-03-24 23:30:00
[editor's note, by Skin Patrol] Promoted from diaries, hat tip to CptChaosSidekick on the scoop. Edited only slightly. Per the Insider:Veteran offensive lineman Jason Fabini plans to re-sign with Washington, a league source said today, providing depth for the offensive line with right guard Randy Thomas still recovering from triceps surgery. Contract terms were not immediately available. I like it. I also like FA's signing at OUR prices and us not breaking into FT. Knox to get them. Can't get enough depth, and also think it gives us even more flexibility in the draft..imagine if we get the rumored 3 compensatory draft picks!!! [editor's note, by Skin Patrol] I support keeping Redskins around and like the strategy articulated by dr WNC in the comments... if you have a playoff caliber team, there isn't a reason to fix something that ain't broke. We went down that path at the close of the 2005 playoffs which was immediately followed by an active free agency involving Adam Ar...
Sammy Baugh is the best quarterback in history
2008-03-24 19:53:00
I'll keep saying it, because it's true. In discussions with other fans regarding what makes the best quarterback of all time, there is no single metric that demands conclusion. Championships are challenged as defining of the greatest accomplishment in sports, but then attacked on the basis that they are a team award. Stats are deemed incomparable between different quarterbacks for precisely the same reason -- context includes personnel and era. Amidst this fog of metrics most fans are left no closer to a reasonable conclusion than the one they started with, that my guy, person X, is the best quarterback ever. I join those fans in creating a metric exclusively because it leads to the conclusion I want. At least I am honest. Neither Joe Montana, nor Brett Favre, nor John Elway, nor Tom Brady, nor even Johnny Unitas, ever had the pleasure of playing in the same league as Otto Graham. Only Johnny Unitas among those listed had the chance to play prior to the Live Ball Era -- a 1978 con...

Derrick Frost still the punter
2008-03-24 19:02:00
Oldish news but neglected here. Per the Official Site: Punter Derrick Frost has agreed to terms on a new contract with the Redskins, the team has announced. Frost completed his third season as the Redskins' punter. He was also the holder on field goal attempts, adding to his value on special teams. Redskins Insider on the amount: Because of roster bonuses in his new contract, Redskins punter Derrick Frost could earn as much as $850,000 next season, a league source said. Frost is in his 5th season, I believe the minimum league salary for that much tenure is somewhere in the 600K range, though am unable to confirm that. That should give you a general idea of the amount he stands to make on bonus, though; hundreds of thousands, not millions of dollars. I don't mind Derrick Frost, but the truth is he's a fairly unremarkable punter. He was 32nd in the league in average yards, 17th in punts w/ in the 20 (against his 75 punts this is neither unusually low nor high), and 11th in fair ...
Rams looking at Caldwell, Macklin
2008-03-20 21:29:00
[editor's note, by Skin Patrol] Promoted from diaries and huge thanks to dr WNC for getting the scoop up for Hogs Haven. Looks like Reche Caldwell is visiting St. Louis, along with David Macklin. No changes made though I did crop the original story a bit, just so we saved some for the St. Louis Dispatch. As a general rule, I get in trouble when this space reproduces entire articles, just FYI. I'm sure additional commentary on the story will appear at Turf Show Times later today. Update on Free agents I would like to see the Redskins resign Caldwell, but at the same time I like what they've done this year as far as setting a price and then sticking to it, in other words good sound business practices.  Sometimes though you do have to bend to maintain a good mix and the right feel.  I hope that is the case with Caldwell. ([editor's note, by Skin Patrol] I agree entirely. I also think Caldwell is a good candidate to splurge ever so slightly on, since his familiarity wi...
March Madness open thread, DTC goes for serious, blogroll needs updating
2008-03-20 19:40:00
First, this is a March Madness open thread. I hadn't done one until now because there are a million better places on the Internet to go to discuss March Madness than my shit Redskins blog, though knock yourselves out here. My brackets all have Kansas winning the championship against Texas, because I'm a Big 12 homer. My favorite team couldn't even make the NIT. Second, the famous Dead Tree Crew (see here and here) has now become more famouser. They've gone film and official, says Mister Irrelevant: Much like the present day National Football League, being a member of the Dead Tree Crew is a year round job. As evidence, we received an email last week from The Mayor himself:     The DTC is set the to steal the thunder from St. Patricks day and March Madness. ... We will be launching a multi pronged attack ..." Part of this "attack" was the launch of DeadTreeCrew.com, where you can see endless photos of their tailgates at F-51, watch their music videos (featuring such ...

Cerrato: More likely to move down than up in the draft
2008-03-20 19:25:00
Among a post chronicling a happier, more evangelical Joe Gibbs, the "much less then the 2 million" we offered Hackett (he settled for 3.5M... elsewhere), and the suggestion that locker room chemistry is more important than the big FA signing -- novel, I know -- comes this gem from Vinny Cerrato (in "an interview that will air tomorrow on Comcast and re-air when [Bram Weinstein] fill[s] in for the Riggo crew next week") at Covering the Redskins: As for the Skins draft position, asked how he feels about their spot at 21, Cerrato said that "if we don't pick there, we're more likely to move down then up." Obviously it's early to have any real sense of that, but it was a striking dose of honesty about where the team stands.. They don't mind their spot in the lower third of the first round.. We moved up to draft Jason Campbell, Chris Cooley, and Rocky McIntosh. By all accounts those decisions were proper or at least justifiable, as all three have been contributing starters on this tea...

Al Sharpton hates the Redskins
2008-03-19 19:17:00
Not really Al Sharpton , though he is apparently the founder of the National Action Network which recently asked the NFL... The Rev. Al Sharpton's organization says Canton has not addressed complaints of police misconduct, so the civil rights group is asking the NFL to cancel this summer's Hall of Fame game in the city. Richard Jones heads the local chapter of the National Action Network, founded by Sharpton. Jones says the group also will publish contact information for black NFL stars so they can be urged to put pressure on the league. And not really "hates the Redskins " either, though that sounds a lot more dramatic than "doesn't want them to play a game" for civil rights reasons. I haven't the foggiest idea what symbolic effect canceling the Redskins v. Colts game could possibly have on alleged police misconduct by Canton authorities, but whatev. Sports By Brooks has the gruesome details on what allegedly went down: The CANTON REPOSITORY reports that Cortes Everett was arre...
Who won't show up for "Voluntary" workouts?
2008-03-19 18:51:00
Different year same story. We annually discuss who is or isn't showing up to voluntary workouts and why they should/we shouldn't care, and 2008 will be no different. The results are mixed on missing voluntary workouts. Sean Taylor had, in the past, skipped voluntary workouts instead opting for Miami as his preparation destination. And he turned out to be just fine as a result. Shawn Springs has done the same though I question what impact that has had on his body, since he is kind of a perennial injury concern. Traditionalists who think players have a responsibility to show up for voluntary workouts aren't going to like this. I don't especially like this, either, as I have traditionalist leanings that inform me players should be with their teammates to show solidarity if nothing else. But this team ran a lot of "voluntary" sessions in 2006 that weren't so voluntary. At least one of our better players, and I believe others, were not fond of that policy. Whatever I thought of it, ...

First Look: 2008 NFL Draft Needs
2008-03-18 20:31:00
By this point, it seems (almost) a lock that the team is not interested in signing any free agents from other teams.  There are some holes to fill and those will most likely be filled utilizing the draft.  It seems that Dan and Vinny have finally realized that they can save money (and keep from restructuring contracts every year) by getting young, cheap talent... or, at least everyone hopes they finally realized that. Anyway, here's the breakdown of the most important and glaring needs... at least, how I see the needs.  Oh, and here's the current roster for reference. WR -  The release of two young WRs sets the table for newer, younger WRs to come in.  The offense that new head coach left in Seattle had turned from a run first offense that made Shawn Alexander a MVP in 2005, to a pass-first offense that spead the field with 3 and 4 WR sets.  That might be more due to the fact that Alexander was a shell of the back he was in 2005 (Pre-Big Contract or...

Rick Gosselin loves the Redskins in '08 but doesn't know it yet
2008-03-18 19:43:00
In an encouragingly titled article, for us at least, Rick Gosselin argues that Smart NFL teams spend little in free agency. I'm not crazy about Rick -- he writes for a rival supporting Dallas Morning News and I felt he was an integral part in keeping Art Monk out of the Hall for so long, but can't confirm that since Gosselin had a no-talkie talkie policy with fans (though he seemed like a nice enough guy when I emailed him) In Re: Art Monk HOF bid -- but I absolutely support his contention that not spending huge boatloads of cash on free agents can be a viable winning strategy and in fact often is. He has some convincing anecdotes: [In 2007] the New York Giants were sitting out the spending spree. To borrow a Jerry Jones term, the Giants were "keeping their powder dry." [And then they won the Super Bowl yeehaw.]... In 2006, the Indianapolis Colts signed only one free agent, and he wasn't even a position player - kicker Adam Vinatieri. The Colts wound up winning the Super Bowl. In...

Matthias Askew signed by Redskins
2008-03-18 19:07:00
I believe it was mentioned in the same release yesterday as the cutting of Espy and Harris though I neglected to say anything on it. The Redskins signed Matthias Askew: REDSKINS SIGN ASKEW: The Washington Redskins signed defensive tackle Matthias Askew, bringing back a player they waived before last season. The 6-foot-5, 302-pound Askew played in five games in 2004 and one in 2005 with the Cincinnati Bengals, who drafted him in the fourth round out of Michigan State. He's a young, fourth round talent defensive tackle. I'm on board. But why is he no longer with the Bengals? As the team said it in 2006, it was performance based: A 2004 fourth-round draft choice out of Michigan State, Askew has been plagued by injuries. "He wasn't going to make our football team at this point," coach Marvin Lewis said. "It's an opportunity for Matthias to catch on with another team. Other guys were playing better." I find that dubious. As the linked CBS article above immediately goes on to docum...

Redskins cut two receivers
2008-03-18 02:59:00
Per the Official Site we've lost Steven Harris and Mike Espy: The Redskins have released wide receivers Mike Espy and Steven Harris, the team announced on Monday. Espy was set to assume a more prominent role on the Redskins' offense last year when he suffered a knee injury in preseason. He was placed on injured reserve following surgery, ending his season... Harris had suffered a knee ligament during a 2007 mini-camp practice. He was placed on injured reserve following surgery. Which goes to show how tenuous one's position is in the NFL and why staying healthy is so important. Both guys were in perpetual limbo as to their permanent roster spot, and proved one injury removed from cuts. I was rooting for both of them all the way -- moral people support underdogs. Best wishes to them both. I enjoy watching the discussion here on drafting a WR but don't want to read too heavily into these cuts. I doubt either Mike Espy or Harris were ever threatening the #2 or #3 spot on the roster....

Chris Cooley likes the new offense
2008-03-17 23:49:00
Per Redskins Insider, which has Chris Cooley discussing the emerging offensive scheme under new Head Coach Jim Zorn: While preparing for the Pro Bowl last month, Cooley got a head start in an offense similar to that of the system Zorn plans to implement. The Green Bay Packers' coaching staff coached the NFC squad in the Pro Bowl "and they run the exact same offense as we run, pretty much word for word what we do, and we got into quite a bit of it," Cooley said. "I've spent some time with Coach Zorn and I feel like I'll pick it up very quickly. I understand what I'm doing. Not to say that I didn't like our old offense, but it's an offense that I think I'll be more comfortable in."... "It's going to give me a lot of options," Cooley said. "Say you're running an 'in route,' instead of just continuing to run 15 yards and run in to the middle of the field, I can stop if I feel there's a hole in the middle of the field. I can look for zones, and that's something that's one ...
DJ Hackett is not a Redskin
2008-03-17 20:52:00
Update [2008-3-17 19:35:32 by TexSkins]: Another WR that had been talked about, Bryant Johnson, signed with the Niners. Anyone else have any other WRs on the radar, or are we officially waiting for the draft? For all the huffing and puffing about Hackett visiting the team, he ended up with the Panthers. Per ESPN: Determined to end the constant double teams of their star receiver, the Carolina Panthers came to terms Monday with Seattle free agent D.J. Hackett on a two-year, $3.5 million deal. The reason for the contractual friction was, per usual, financial in nature: Hackett spent last week visiting Washington -- he had a minimum salary offer from the Redskin s -- Tampa Bay and Carolina, where he met with coach John Fox and general manager Marty Hurney and talked on the phone with Smith. Two-year 3.5M dollar contract is not minimum and kudos to Hackett for getting paid. Also kudos to the Redskins for exercising some uncharacteristic fiscal restraint in this player's market. Red...
