There is nothing going on so here are some videos
2008-04-10 21:32:00 This is extremely lazy of me but I can't find anything news worthy to note (maybe I'm not looking very hard). Consider this prime time to get diaries promoted as I'm jonesing for content but incapable of producing any. In the interim, you can enjoy any one of three videos: Todd Yoder reenacting a Chris Cooley zit pop. There is some hyperbole in there, as I simply do not believe zit puss can travel across an entire lockerroom, but a great story nonetheless. That said, Chris Cooley has some serious distance: 3. Chipmunks sing Crank Dat Redskins Boy. Might be the most annoying thing that's happened in the 21st century: I'm not a good blogger today. More About: Videos
Redskins scheduled to meet with WR Malcolm Kelly
2008-04-09 21:52:00 Update [2008-4-9 17:4:12 by Skin Patrol]: Per Brian of Buffalo Rumblings, Kelly struggled at his pro day and could fall more than is currently projected, thus increasing the likelihood that he's available at #21. Assuming that to be the case, some or all of the below commentary is dated. More awesomely sordid details of Kelly's pro day available here; he's blaming OU, at least in part. Per Dayton Daily News, emphasis added: the agent for Sooners wide receiver Malcolm Kelly confirmed the Bengals will fly Kelly to Cincinnati for a private meeting immediately after he works out in front of NFL scouts at OU's Everest Indoor Training Center. Kelly is also scheduled to meet with the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins later in the week. And, yes, the dag-gum Buffalo Bills are also very interested in Kelly. I don't know if Kelly will be available by the 21st pick in the draft, so maybe this raises questions about whether the team is considering trading up (shouldn't it be ... More About: Meet
Redskins big on O-Lineman Branden Albert, also, as per usual, I was wrong
2008-04-09 21:38:00 Huge hat tip to Ryan Wilson at the Fanhouse for tracking down this non-trivial nugget of info per Redskins Insider that I somehow missed, despite reading that space daily. First and foremost: A week ago we spent a lot of time blogging about Branden Albert , the guard/tackle from Virginia. And for good reason. He would be a steal at 21, and, sources said, the Skins are very high on him, considering him the best of the O Linemen likely to be available and a player they would gladly pounce on here. Versatility has been cited by the coaching staff as a plus in Washington for years now. This is especially true on an aging line, where there is little or no certainty where the next injury will come; is it Jansen or Samuels at tackle or Kendall or Thomas at guard? Our o-line backups reflect this trend towards utility: Jason Fabini (also called "furbini"; draw your own conclusions) spent the entire 2003 season at tackle but recently filled in for Randy Thomas at guard here in Washington. Actions > Words and the Redskins Salary Cap
2008-04-09 20:17:00 The least controversial measure of inefficient salary cap use would probably be the amount of dead cap hits, since dead cap hits are paid for on players who are necessarily no longer part of the franchise and thus incapable of contributing anything to the team. In essence they are always less valuable than the money being spent on them, since their value to the team is zero and the amount spent on them is some amount more than zero, sometimes amounts hundreds of thousands, millions, higher. And we haven't been so efficient at avoiding dead cap hits, per Jason La Canfora: How much blame to put on [VP of football administration Eric Schaffer] for the oodles of poor contracts and the NFL record $80-plus million in dead cap space since 2000 is hard to pinpoint, however, given how hands on owner Daniel Snyder is in this regard, and the fact that Vinny Cerrato and Joe Gibbs were also charting the course the past 4 years, with Schaffer taking cues from them and much lower down the hierar... Yahoo Sports phones one in
2008-04-08 20:48:00 I'm extremely uncomfortable attacking the content of traditional media since their product is the result of professional work whereas mine is usually garbled nonsense that less often than not makes a damn bit of sense. I'm especially uncomfortable doing so when there is an actual name attached to a professional media product, since now I am anonymously (would you believe Skin Patrol isn't my real name? - Will Allensworth) attacking someone else's hard work. Fortunately this Yahoo Sports ! article, which I am probably taking far too much umbrage from, is anonymous and thus gets derision from me without as much reservation. The premise is simple enough: Here's a complete list of the decision makers with each team that will have the most influence during the NFL draft process. At the risk of contradicting myself shortly, although conceptually there isn't anything difficult to ingest from the above, the idea that anyone can know with great certainty who the single decision maker is... Reed Doughty has the confidence of one teammate
2008-04-08 20:01:00 Yesterday this space thought Aqib Talib might be a good direction with the 21st pick in next year's draft based on the way the SBNation Mock Draft shook out. But we could have gone in a different direction, towards safety for instance: Draft Kenny Phillips. Safety is quietly (arguably) a position of need and he wouldn't be a huge reach at 21. I realize that the naysayers will point out that we will have drafted 3 safeties in 4 years as our top pick, but unfortunately we have to judge the situation differently as Sean Taylor is tragically deceased. He is going to be a good safety, there's no doubt, and Reed Doughty is servicable, not elite. I'll agree with mmford10 to the extent that I'm not yet sure that Doughty is a starter quality safety. He played like it for spurts last year, though I attributed that to him simply overachieving. However, at least one teammate thinks Reed Doughty has what it takes. Chris Cooley said, in response to a question about who will have a "break out... More About: Confidence
Hogs Haven selects Aqib Talib, Cornerback out of Kansas
2008-04-08 03:31:00 It was a tough call between Talib and Brandon Albert, as compelling cases were made for both players form the peanut gallery. I want to express my deepest appreciation to all reader(s) who helped us make the pick, and know that your input was the driving force to the selection. Personally, I have some serious questions about Aqib Talib and consider him a stretch in the first round... but I'm usually wrong, so that bodes well for the young man. The pick is up at Mocking The Draft with both mine and TexSkin's thoughts (mine open, his begin at "From there, we move to the stats, measurables, and all the other fun stuff....") on Talib and why he might be the right pick there. I want to note quickly, before you go over there, that as the players have been selected they have added their name to that team's jersey, their number being the pick they were selected with. As you can imagine, I wasn't terribly comfortable with the idea of having someone else's name on a #21 jersey, but I kno... More About: Kansas , Hogs , Haven
Entire Redskins team nominated for Halas Award
2008-04-07 21:36:00 Per WPXI: The Halas Award , given for overcoming adversity, has an entire team nominated: the Washington Redskins . Safety Sean Taylor died late last season after suffering gunshot wounds during a burglary at his house, then the Redskins went on to make the playoffs. Also in the running for the award are Bills tight end Kevin Everett, who has made a remarkable recovery after briefly becoming paralyzed making a tackle during Buffalo's season opener; Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis, the AP's Comeback Player of the Year; and two Giants, receiver Plaxico Burress and quarterback Eli Manning. Per Redskins 360: In my 15 years in the PFWA, including 12 on the board, six on the executive board and two as President, I can't recall an entire team being nominated before this. I believe the award will go either to the Redskins or to Everett, who's walking again after being paralyzed in last season's opener. It is an individual award, which makes the nomination of the Redskins even more extraord... More About: Entire , Team , Nominated
Clinton Portis, receiver extraordinaire
2008-04-07 21:03:00 In the 2007 season, Clinton Portis quietly had the most productive receiving season of his career. I say quietly because it was not an earth shattering receiving year -- his 389 yards receiving was only nominally higher than his previous high of 364 -- and did not result in any touchdowns. However, the rub going into the '08 season was that Ladell Betts (at least relative) advantage over Portis was that he was more apt at receiving out of the backfield. Portis is a better runner and is about the best blocking running back in the National Football League. From the looks of it, CP is a more complete back now. While his numbers were good, not great, they were efficient. I was browsing STATS NFL leaderboard and stumbled across a few interesting numbers: Clinton Portis was the NFL's sixth leading rusher last year. In general, individual rushing yards are down from years past, where even LT, in a league-leading effort, could not surpass the 1500 yard mark. I attribute the change to an... More About: Receiver
Redskins sign WR/KR Mathis
2008-04-05 19:48:00 The Redskins signed their first free agent (outside of their own free agents) of the offseason in the form of former Pro Bowl KR Jerome Mathis. Meet your new KR. (P.S. The official site has it, so it's official.) Casserly took the home whites with him to Houston. (Image from here.) I'm not sure what this means for Rock Cartwright, who was brought back earlier in the offseason and has been the main kick return guy for the team. Mathis was never much of a recieving threat in Houston (the team who drafted him) so I have to view this as signing him to be a KR. He is wicked fast (like 4.31 fast), and in his 2005 Pro Bowl season, he had 54 kickoff returns for 1542 yards and 2 TDs, plus 12 punt returns for 68 yards. As a WR that year, he had only 5 receptions for 65 yards (13.0 yard per catch average) and only has 6 receptions in his career. Part of that is because he's injury prone. He played 12 games in 2005, missed all of 2006 and played only 3 games las... More About: Sign
The Redskins Edition of Where are They Now?
2008-04-04 19:59:00 With so little news of the Redskins this offseason, I think it's time we took a look at where some former Redskins either are, or might be, landing. The following names are just a few... and have been in the news this week. First up, everyones favorite head-butting quarterback: that's right sports fans, Gus "I knocked myself out of a starting QB job in Washington because I played head-butt-chicken with a concrete wall and lost" Frerotte. I'm not even sure this is him... but this is how I like to remember him. (Image from here.) Well, at least I spelled his name right. Anyway, Frerotte signed a "multi-year" deal with the Minnesota Vikings. He is there to puch Tavaris Jackson... and replace him, if necessary. Let's just hope the Vikings protect their investment and put padding up on all the walls behind each end zone. Wouldn't want to see a valuable commodity go to waste because of a heat-of-the-moment decision, which could negatively effect t... More About: Edition

Draft news: Skins down on Limas Sweed, up on Aqib Talib
2008-04-03 22:45:00 Which reflects sound judgment on their part, because I was up on Limas Sweed but down on Aqib Talib. It is always good news when the team disagrees with me. Because I'm an idiot. Per Covering the Redskins (which also has a description of a fantastially plotted and executed -- and most importantly humiliating -- April Fool's joke): As for WR, the Skins appear not to be too hot on Texas speedster Limas Sweed who many believe could be a target for them in the first or second round.. ESPN pitched the idea of CB Aqib Talib from Kansas, Vinny admitted he liked him very much.. I'd be surprised if the Skins went CB in the first round.. I would likewise be surprised if only because I am down on Talib and he's about the best that will be available around there. But it doesn't matter what I think, rather what Vinny thinks, and Bram from CTR is a reliable source. Update your draft expectations accordingly. Did you know: Chris Cooley is awesome at being awesome?
2008-04-03 22:11:00 So I was just cruisng around THE GREATEST WEBSITE IN HISTORY when I stumbled upon an ESPN Magazine video of Clinton Portis vs. Chris ty Ogilvie (Chris Cooley's fiancee, pronounced fy-ants) in a game of who knows Cooley best where he reveals: He is awesome at drawing naked women (both Christy and Portis are awarded points) Clinton Portis thinks Chris Cooley's favorite food is fried snails. Clinton Portis thinks Name That Tune is Chris Cooley's favorite game show, which hasn't aired since like 1960 and has failed no fewer than three times in being revived. Cooley would play Deal or No Deal, and his strategy, predictably genius and sound, would be to keep the hottest women around to give him his $1 million. Even though I don't think anyone has ever won, Chris Cooley would definitely win. Clinton Portis sleeps during meetings; Cooley draws pictures of naked women. This is why we made the playoffs. It's just good, wholesome television. Enjoy: More About: Awesome
Captain Nemo returns to Redskins
2008-04-03 21:53:00 I prematurely pointed towards Pete Schmitt as the backup to Mike Sellers at FB, as that position is now considerably more interesting. Per the Official Site: The Redskins have re-signed fullback Nehemiah Broughton, the team announced on Wednesday... Broughton will look to compete for a roster spot behind starter Mike Sellers. Which means in front of Schmitt, and I don't know if we'll keep three fullbacks, especially with former FB Rock Cartwright on the roster to serve as the emergency guy there. In fact I'm damn near sure we won't keep tres fullbacks. The Redskin Reporter Lee Gibbons, who has been doing this better and longer than I have, had this to say: [E]xciting news in Redskin land yesterday as the team announced the re-signing of fullback Nehemiah Broughton. Nemo was drafted by the Redskins in 2005 in the 7th round. He's basically been injured ever since (hence the hospital bed photo.... HOHO-larious). This is especially sweet since two deserving Redskins, Art Monk and Darrell Green, got in (or finally made it in Monk's case). We play the Bills for our home opener at FedEx Field, then preview the Meadowlands for the home opener we play there to start the regular season. Apparently this is the 2nd time in a row we've closed out the preseason agai... More About: Football , Schedule
Snyder at the Owner's Meeting
2008-04-02 19:48:00 I'm short on time so this will probably be my only post of the day (the site is yours, reader(s)!). The Washington Times tracked down Dan Snyder at the owner's meeting and coerced some interesting tidbits from him. The entire article is worth a read though, here go some highlights: "I was 34 when I bought the team," Mr. Snyder said. "Now I'm approaching my mid-40s. There's something about just growing up. My drive to succeed, my energy, my passion hasn't changed. My experience, my professionalism and patience is starting to pay off for us. I was thrown into it very quickly, and I did the best I could. I made a lot of mistakes, and I learned a ton. Now, hopefully, I'm becoming a much better owner than I was when I was 34 years old." We all hope he's a better owner now than he was back then. Snyder purchased the franchise in 1999. The team failed to accomplish a winning season or playoff appearance for 5 more years until, in Joe Gibbs' second year with the team, we finally bro... Skins cut Campbell, name Collins starter
2008-04-01 22:14:00 Read more of the story here. From the article: Zorn said that the recent time he has spent one on one with Campbell has been little more than a "waste of time." Zorn went on to say that "for a guy who was supposed to be coachable, with 7 systems in 8 years or whatever it is, the guy just doesn't want to listen." The Redskins are expected to look for a young QB in this month's draft to compete with Sam Hollenbach for the backup spot. Wow. Surprising stuff. I have a feeling that the knee injury is a little more serious than the team first let on. I'm just glad that the team resigned Collins . This changes the team's need in the draft a bit. Think Brohm is worth the #21 pick? Anyway, hit up the comments section. Sad day for the 'Stache. P.S. The Raiders pick of McFadden in the SBN draft is up over at Mocking the Draft. Chris Cooley considering a move into his mother's basement
2008-04-01 20:04:00 There is a God; my favorite player on my favorite team is now a blogger. My reaction was totally predictable, as Dan Steinberg points out: So yeah, Chris Cooley pretty much has what it takes to be a successful blogger. This might be a good time to mention that, with the possible exceptions of Clinton Portis, Fred Smoot and Dmitri Young, there is no D.C. athlete who will be more quickly embraced by the D.C. blogosphere than Chris Cooley. In my case he's only wrong about one thing; there is no exception. Chris Cooley is the most fascinating player in the NFL and he happens to play for a team I write about daily. And now he has a blog. About precisely the kind of thing most fans find banal for all the right reasons yet I embrace because they're simply too funny and bizarre not to. See: "We didn't want to do a Web site where a player pays a company to put it up and it looks like what everyone else has," he told me this week. A coach was too expensive for Daniel Snyder
2008-03-31 21:36:00 Crazy thought, huh? Amid allegations that Vinny Cerrato is responsible may get lost the fact that the Redskins interviewed a lot of head coaching candidates, and some of them priced their way out of town. For instance: The Redskins had to wait until the Super Bowl was played to interview their final candidate, Giants defensive coordinator Spagnuolo. After Spagnuolo announced on Thursday that he'd rather stay with the Giants -- who gave him a new three-year, $6 million contract -- Snyder said he invited Zorn to lunch. That's a pretty good little paycheck for Spagnuolo. To give you an idea of how much the Redskins have paid for coaches, remember that this one time the Redskins...: Steve Spurrier, jumping from college football to the pros, will start out as the highest-paid coach in the NFL before calling a single play. The deal he signed with the Washington Redskins will pay him $25 million over five years. The Redskins announced Spurrier's hiring Monday, a day after Marty Schotten... Public urination is an awesome crime
2008-03-31 20:00:00 The actual news today is that the Redskins signed Pete Schmitt. That's actually about four days old news but it's worth noting late because... Schmitt is a 6-3, 252-pounder who spent the 2007 training camp with the Redskins. He suffered a shoulder injury in preseason and was released with an injury settlement... Schmitt is expected t o compete for playing time with Tyler Ecker, another first-year player. Ecker was the Redskins' seventh-round draft pick in 2007, but he spent the year on injured reserve. This serves as a good refresher on the status of Tyler Ecker, our last draft pick in 2007. Unfortunate injury sidelined him but did provide ample opportunities for Todd Yoder to shine as Chris Cooley's Robin. (Perhaps an inappropriate analogy, since Sammy Baugh may have claim to being Batman.) Also a refresher that Batman is wise: Robin, looking at Batgirl: "You know something, Batman?" Batman: "What's that, Robin?" Robin: "She looks very pretty when she's asleep." Batman: "I th... More About: Crime , Public , Awesome

Good vs. Evil... THE SEQUEL: Redskins v. Giants in season opener
2008-03-27 19:17:00 The first game of the Redskins season will also be the first of the NFL's 2008 season. Per NFL.com: The NFL's Thursday night season opener will match the Super Bowl-champion New York Giants and the Washington Redskins, with the game possibly starting an hour-and-a-half earlier to avoid clashing with the Republican National Convention. The game is now scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EDT on Sept. 4 -- the concluding night of the Republican convention -- and will be televised by NBC. League spokesman Greg Aiello said Wednesday that the NFL is talking with the network about changing the game's starting time to 7 p.m. Which will give us a few extra days of rest for Week 2, so we'll be better prepared to open the season 2-0 (because we're going to win, see?). Offensive Linemen and the Draft
2008-03-27 04:15:00 Update [2008-3-27 1:19:35 by TexSkins]: A few things from ESPN. First, this article about how the GOP convention might interfere with football. (The Skins - Giants season opener is on the same Thursday night.) I wonder which one would get more viewers? And second, ESPN had their nightly "On the Clock" segment for the Redskins, and Mel Kiper brought up three names: Harvey, Talib, and Sweed. He said that he thought Sweed was more of a round 2 pick (which I totally agree with), he said that Talib might be the guy there for the pick, and he said if Harvey is there, you gotta take him. And that is why Mel is the Draft Man. More on the draft tomorrow. G'night. P.S. Mike Tirico closed with nice parting shot about how it will be nice hearing from the Skins on draft day "for a change." You win this round, Tirico. I've been saying for a while now that other than a franchise Left Tackle, almost all Offensive Linemen should be drafted in the later rounds of the draft. H...
Redskin cracks top 10 receivers of all time list
2008-03-26 19:16:00 I'm busy so I need to keep this short. Mike Sando at ESPN asked a panel of experts -- justified at the bottom of the article -- who the best wide receivers of all time were. A Redskin cracked the top 10, but probably not the guy you're thinking of: 6. CHARLEY TAYLOR Career: Played for Redskins 1964-77. All-time leading receiver with 649 catches for 9,110 yards when he retired. Elected to Hall of Fame in 1984. Edited slightly. Enjoy. ESPN and others may be confused but local magazines and Bleacher Report seem to understand the Redskins' offseason.
