'If I didn't believe, I'd have stayed home' - Tendulkar
2007-03-06 05:09:00 Heading into his fifth, and likely final, World Cup, Sachin Tend ulkar admits that the expectation of millions of Indians isn't as daunting as made out to be, and that if it was, he would have stayed home. "It's not just me, but the entire nation which dreams about this," he told reporters in Jamaica. "It's extremely important. We have tried our best in the past and we will continue to do that. "If there has been no success in the recent past, it doesn't mean that we will never achieve it. If we lose hope, then we may as well be back in India. But we have hope and we have pride." Tendulkar , one-day cricket's highest run-scorer (14, 783 from 381 games) missed India's tour to the West Indies last year, but believed they could do well in the World Cup. "I am looking forward to having a good World Cup. I am hoping that both my batting and bowling will come good," he said. "I am not under any pressure at this time I feel quite confident and I am ready to go." Tendulka... More About: Home , Have , Believe
World Cup was deadline for return, says Ganguly
2007-03-03 13:17:00 Sourav Gang uly, the former Indian captain who recently made a remarkable return to the Indian Test and one-day sides, revealed that he'd set a World Cup deadline for himself, after which he would have given up hope of playing for India. He also admitted that he'd captained the side for "too long", adding, in what was a stunning confession, that captaincy doesn't "excite" him anymore. "I would have tried for a certain period of time," Ganguly said in a wide-ranging interview with Cricinfo Magazine when asked if he'd ever thought of quitting the game during his time away from the Indian team. "I would have tried till the World Cup. If after that it [recall] wouldn't have happened, probably I would have taken other decisions. "I knew that the selection committee will also change in September. There were a whole lot of things involved in it. As I said, these things were not in my control. I'd just given myself a deadline that I would try till this period of time and ... More About: Deadline , Dead
Shoaib and Asif out of the World Cup
2007-03-02 05:46:00 As had been expected for some time now, Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif were finally ruled out of Pakistan's World Cup squad, though the decision, farcically, came minutes before the team's departure to the Caribbean. Asif is down with an elbow injury while Shoaib is nursing a crocked knee. "We have received their medical assessments and the players are physically unfit. Therefore we felt we shouldn't take them for such a big tournament," PJ Mir, the team spokesman told Cricinfo. "Their injuries will take time to heal so after selectors consulted Inzamam-ul-Haq the decision has been taken to not take them." The pair will be replaced by fast bowler Mohammad Sami and allrounder Yasir Arafat. "Sami and Arafat will join the team in the Caribbean in a few days but we have to get clearance for them from the ICC's technical committee. Their names were decided by the captain and the selection committee together," Mir added, mindful perhaps of reports today speculating that ... More About: The World
Smith expectations as Proteas head to World Cup
2007-03-01 06:38:00 South African skipper Graeme Smith said up to six teams were in with a shout at the World Cup as he tried to dampen expectations about the new world number one's chances of glory. As he prepared to fly out to the Caribbean from Johannseburg with the 15-man Proteas squad, Smith said the players had managed to put previous World Cup disappointments behind them and confidence was high after toppling Australia recently from the perch of the one-day rankings. But he said the top-ranking did not mean that they should automatically be seen as favourites for the tournament. "We got the number one ranking over a period of time, whereas the World Cup is an event, and anything can happen," he told reporters. "There are about six countries that could either win it, or prevent us winning it." South Africa have had a miserable time at previous World Cups. As the host nation in 2003, they were embarrassingly knocked out before the business end of the competition after a mix-up over t... More About: Expect , Head
chappel says,Its time to perform
2007-02-28 06:17:00 Chappels commentsGreg Chappell, India's coach, was confident and positive in the pre-departure press conference ahead of India's campaign in the forthcoming World Cup in the Caribbean. "We're all looking forward to the World Cup. It's the showpiece tournament in one-day cricket and we are in as good a position as we could have been," he said. "The pieces of the jigsaw puzzle have fallen into place in the last few weeks. There is a good balance, good experience and youth in the squad, and a good variety in bowling and batting. That will give us a wide range of options no matter what the condition and no matter what the opposition."Dravids CommentsRahul Dravid, India's captain, said that Australia were still favourites at the start of the World Cup but warned that the tournament was wide open and that the Super 8s would be a critical phase for every team aspiring to win the tournament. "Australia start as favourites. The competition is going to be tight among the eight... More About: Time , Form , Perform
