Tuesday night roundup
2008-06-11 06:01:00 BY ADAM RONIS Lastings Milledge hit a two-run homer with two out in the top of the ninth inning off Matt Capps to give the Nationals a 7-6 win. Milledge has started slow with five homers and 25 RBIs and isn't in a great lineup, but he has 10 steals and will get better as he sees more major league pitching. Ron Belliard is expected to see more playing time and he started at second base. He went 3-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs. Not only does Nate McLouth have 14 homers, but he hit his 20th double. He also stole his seventh base and he should be more aggressive on the basepaths as the season progresses. Ryan Doumit was a guy I targeted at catcher because he also gets time at other positions. Unfortuantely, I didn't land him in any drafts. He will see most of his time at catcher and is a good hitter. He went 4-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs. He is hitting .345 with seven homers and 18 RBIs. Jon Rauch picked up his 13th save. In a league where I can use only one reliever, ... More About: Roundup , Night , Tuesday
Mitchell Boggs (P-STL)
2008-06-11 06:00:00 In need of pitching help, the Cardinals called up right-hander Mitchell Boggs from Triple-A Memphis on Friday and sent down right-hander Mike Parisi. The 6-foot-4 Boggs, 24, was an impressive 5-1 with a 3.28 ERA for Memphis. "I've been fortunate," said Boggs, who flew from Memphis to Houston Friday morning to join the Cardinals. "I've had a good year so far. They have a really talented ballclub down there. I've had a lot of guys who know how to play the game around me. That makes it a little bit easier."
Adam Wainwright (P-STL)
2008-06-11 05:49:00 With a number of pitchers already on the disabled list, the Cardinals got more bad news on Monday night and will have to place Adam Wainwright on the DL. Wainwright, who will officially go on the DL on Tuesday, is suffering from a finger sprain. The Cardinals' de facto ace injured his right middle finger while pitching against the Houston Astros on Saturday. Wainwright said he felt a little pain in his finger prior to the start. He had to be taken out in the sixth inning while pitching to Darin Erstad. Wainwright is 6-3 on the year with a 3.14 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 13 starts.

Furcal to miss more time
2008-06-11 04:34:00 BY ADAM RONIS Rafael Furcal was planning on returning from the DL on June 17, but that will not happen and he could be out for the remainder of the month. He was examined by a dcotor over the weekend and it was determined his back isn't ready. He will miss at least two more weeks and then needs a week of rehab games. It's not a good sign when Nomar Garciaparra will beat you out on a return from injury. He could begin a rehab assignment this week and return to play shortstop. More About: Time , Miss

Fantasy Errata
2008-06-11 03:00:00 -- It was an interesting Tuesday in Fantasy Baseball. If you noticed that Keith Foulke (who gave up a run today), and Alan Embree, were suddenly snatched up in your league: it's because Huston Street is complaining of a sore groin. If you need saves, act accordingly. If you put a gun to my head, I'd pick up Foulke, but you're really flipping a coin here. -- I do love strikeout mongers. Through Monday, there were about fifteen pitchers with more strikeouts than hits allowed amongst those who've pitched a decent amount of innings. Only one of them, Jonathan Sanchez (75 Ks, 66 hits) might be a free agent in your league. Clearly, these are pitchers you want on your team.Topping the chart is the stupefyingly awesome Carlos Marmol, whose 18 hits allowed versus 60 Ks is the stuff that dreams are made of. Rounding out the rest: Brandon Webb (75 Ks and 71 hits), Tim Lincecum (83 Ks, 70 hits), Chad Billingsley (79 Ks, 60 hits, Edinson [sic] Volquez )96 Ks, 52 hits, Josh Beckett (80 Ks, 66...
Off Topic: The Griffey Ball
2008-06-11 02:58:00 Cody Ross' recent comments about Ken Griffey Jr.'s 600th home run ball really irked me. A Marlins season ticket holder, Joe, caught the ball and hasn't decided what to do yet. Here's what Ross said: Just give it to the Hall of Fame, get to meet him, get an autograph, whatever. But people get greedy. They want to make some money. I guess the whole Internet thing kicked all of this stuff off. It didn't use to be like this, but it's a different era. People get money hungry now. This is coming from Cody Ross, a man who will have made over a million dollars for three years of baseball. A guy whose '09 salary alone should be close to a million bucks. It's ridiculous for Ross to flippantly suggest Joe would be greedy to make money off the ball. The ball might be worth anywhere from $15,000 to $100,000. For many people, that's a life-changing amount of money. A down payment on a new house, maybe. Joe is right to take his t... More About: Topic , Ball

The Scoop
2008-06-11 01:34:00 By Dalton Del Don Anyone surprised by Jeremy Bonderman?s season-ending surgery hasn?t been paying attention to him over the past year. Something had clearly not been right with him for a while now. A loss in velocity is a sign of injury, but so is lack of command, which Bonderman struggled with mightily this season. J.R. Towles ... The '08 Draft: Knee-Jerk Reactions
2008-06-11 01:16:00 We live-blogged the '08 amateur draft last Thursday, and it was a lot of fun. Over 4,000 people came along for the ride. You can read the transcript here. Immediately after each of the first 30 picks, I polled readers on whether the team "made the right choice." We can keep the results for posterity and determine whether it's fair to rag on a team for picking the wrong guy. If most people liked the pick at the time it was made, it wouldn't be right to criticize it in hindsight. Here are the poll responses to the question, "Did Team X make the right choice by drafting Player Y? Tim Beckham, Rays - 80% said yes. Pedro Alvarez, Pirates - 89%. Eric Hosmer, Royals - 63%. Brian Matusz, Orioles - 80%. Buster Posey, Giants - 68%. Kyle Skipworth, Marlins - 54%. Yonder Alonso, Reds - 33%. Gordon Beckham, White Sox - 79%. Aaron Crow, Nationals - 82%. Jason Castro, Astros - 14%. Justin Smoak, Rangers - 90%. Jemile Weeks, A's - 41%. Brett Wallace, Cardinals - 65... More About: Draft , Jerk
Odds and Ends: Broussard, Ledezma, Cooper
2008-06-11 00:58:00 More random linkage. The Yankees have released first baseman Ben Broussard. The Padres designated Wil Ledezma for assignment. The 27 year-old could help someone as a reliever. The first first-rounder of '08 has signed: David Cooper of the Blue Jays. He could be in High-A ball by year's end. Last year's 17th pick, Blake Beavan, got about $1.5MM. By the way, only 26% of readers thought the Jays made the right choice with Cooper (according to our in-draft poll). Funny Mike Mussina quote from John Feinstein's new book. More About: Odds , Ends

Scouting the AL West
2008-06-10 23:05:00 BY ADAM RONIS LOS ANGELES ANGELS Buy low -- Vladimir Guerrero: Is Vlad done? He's only 32, but he does get a lot of minor injuries. He's off to a very bad start, hitting .264 with eight homers and 32 RBIs. Vlad has always had an unconventional approach to hitting that has resulted in a lot of success. He'll swing at any pitch in any location and he usually gets his bat on the ball. As he gets older and his skills decline, that may make his numbers take a steep decline. He doesn't steal anymore, but he did hit .324 with 45 doubles, 27 homers and 125 RBIs last season. Those numbers look unreachable at this point. He went 4-for-4 last night and hit a homer two games ago and he's still capable of going on a ridiculous tear. Find his owner who may think he's done and acquire him for cheap. Sell high -- Joe Saunders: Even if he didn't get hammered last night, he would be here. He has one of the lowest BABIP in baseball. He had done a good job limiting home runs, but allowed three ...
