The Wire Troll: Downs Syndrome
2008-06-08 18:27:00
Joel Zumaya, Detroit, RP: Assuming Zumaya can stay away from both stacking boxes in attics and sharpening his chops on Guitar Hero, he should be returning to the Tiger bullpen as early as next week. He’s coming off a very strong outing for the High-A Lakeland Flying Tigers, pitching two scoreless innings and hitting triple ...

BY ADAM RONIS http://www.newsday.com/services/newspaper /printedition/sunday/sports/ny-spfantasy0 85719314jun08,0,3532984.column Suggested pickups AL ONLY Scott Downs (Blue Jays), RP: B.J. Ryan has been excellent coming off Tommy John surgery, but has blown two consecutive saves. At some point this season, Ryan could hit the DL. Downs would take his place and even if Ryan is healthy, he won't pitch too often on consecutive days and Downs should get those opportunities. Travis Buck (Athletics), OF: He started the season with the A's and hit just .154. He was sent down to the minors where he hit .337. Buck had 34 extra base hits in 285 at-bats with the A's last season. Radhames Liz (Orioles), SP: Liz was excellent against the Twins in his first start for the Orioles this season. He had a 4.05 ERA in the minors, but struck out 58 in 60 innings. He can reach the mid-90s, but control is always an issue. NL ONLY Josh Anderson (Braves), OF: Anderson will see some time in leftfield. He hit...

You go to hell, saves; you go to hell and you die
2008-06-08 15:24:00
Our very own Mike Bock advises to never pay for saves, but I've concluded that I'm just no good at getting them for free. So if I get to play in this bloggers league again next year, I'm paying for them. I'll draft guys too high. I'll draft three closers in a row. I really don't give a shit -- anything to avoid the mess I've made of my fantasy bullpen this year.Just a few days ago, I talked about Mike Gonzalez likely being Atlanta's next closer, but because roster spots are at a premium, because Gonzalez wasn't even back from rehab yet, because Soriano was starting to look pretty good in his last few outings -- I never picked Gonzo up. But another team did. (It was that rat bastard Edwin Van Bibber-Orr from MVN.com.) And then, on Friday, Soriano dropped the in-retrospect-least-surprising-bombshell- ever on Bobby Cox and his fantasy owners -- his arm was hurting again. The tendinitis was back. Just like that, my Atlanta-closer quagmire was upgraded to a full-blown catastrophe...

Is the Draft Efficient?
2008-06-08 14:56:00
Somebody asked me yesterday whether the draft was an “efficient” system. In other words, is it the best possible way for MLB teams to sign amateur players? My immediate answer was yes (or at least, mostly yes), but it’s actually a fairly difficult question to answer. Consider this: for every game the Yankees win, they add $x ...

Ellis Still Wants To Stay
2008-06-08 14:23:00
More from John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle:  Mark Ellis still wants to re-sign with the Athletics in the offseason rather than test free agency, which could be lucrative for him.  This remains even after the A's drafted second baseman Jemile Weeks with their first pick in the draft.  Says Ellis, "You never know what'll happen in the draft. You need players. Baseball drafts aren't like football or basketball drafts where you see these guys right away."True.  If Jemile Weeks comes up in 2-3 years, Ellis could be a trade piece for Beane but that's very conditional and Ellis is happy in Oakland.  Solidifying reports that he'll stay in Oakland, Ellis says,"I would think if something got done, it would be before the season's over. I'm not saying (free agency) wouldn't be fun to do, but I'm happy here. The organization has been good to me, and it's an organization (in which) you always have a chance to win. You never know what's out there (on the...

Rincon On His Way Out?
2008-06-08 12:33:00
Long time Twin reliever Juan Rincon may be the odd man out when the Twins reduce their pitching staff from 13 to 12 - this from Kelsie Smith of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.  Rincon is sporting a 5.19 ERA through 23 games, comparable to last years 5.13 ERA and a far cry from his career 3.63.  Rincon could still finish strong and hit his PECOTA projected ERA of 3.92.  After being busted for steroids in 2006, Rincon went on to post a 2.91 ERA; however, he became hittable in 2007 and that trend continues.  His H/9, BB/9, and K/9 have all been declining.  Still, Rincon is only 29 so he may just need a change of scenery, not uncommon for relievers and setup men. Says Manager Ron Gardenhire,  "All we can do is keep running them out there until some other decision is made where we can't."  If they can't, Rincon will most likely be designated for assignment.  The righty is making $2.475MM on a 1-year contract this season and his stock is at an all ti...
Trendspotting: Vladimir Guerrero, Alex Rios
2008-06-08 12:10:00
I owe all of you a post. Friday is my normal "editorial" day, but this week I had to attend a graduation (as a side note, I congratulation any of our high school readers that may have escaped their confines). While I'd like to soon return to some economic analyses, I think these two players present a pertinent subject. In my Yahoo! league, I play with differentiated outfield, with one rightfielder, centerfielder, and leftfielder. Rios and Guerrero both offer right field eligibility, with the former also holding a spot in center. Vladimir Guerrero : I will be the first to admit that Guerrero is not the first or second round talent he once was. He's playing in his thirteenth season and is now a supposed thirty-two years of age. However, he's always been a consistent hitter for average and RBIs, and this year he's far off pace of his career numbers. Currently batting .251, he's seemingly floundering at the plate. There is cause for hope, though, in the fact that his .274 BABIP is n...

Odds & Ends: Beckham, Bedard, Bonds, Mulder
2008-06-08 12:05:00
Lots of high profile players in today's Odds & Ends : The Rays have opened contract discussions with first overall pick Tim Beckham , says Marc Topkin. Phil Rogers of the Chicago Sports Tribune suggests we add Erik Bedard to the list of starting pitchers who may be available at the trade deadline.  More appropriately, Rogers also notes the M's will most likely hold on to Bedard through 2009, a far more likely outcome. Also in the longshot rumor department, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle speculates on Barry Bonds playing for the Red Sox.  Personally, I would predict there's a 0.0% chance Bonds plays in Boston. In that same piece by John Shea, Mark Mulder could be done.  He's rejecting the idea of a third surgery and attempting to alter his delivery to remain effective and pain free. Will Carroll reports Jeremy Bonderman has undergone surgery to overcome Thoracic Outlet Syndrome - as I understand it, a pinched vein causing a blood clot - and will need a ...
Sort of like an Errata, but not really an Errata 'cause Mike didn't write i
2008-06-08 12:05:00
What a long, terrible headline that was, huh? But what's a guy to do when he's got a couple bullet points of his own, stuff that our esteemed Mike Bock didn't cover, that he wants to throw up for our devoted readers? My occasional short observations need a home too, damn it! They also need a moniker to distinguish them from Mike's Errata (which is like a world-destroying brand name at this point that I wouldn't dare co-opt), but I couldn't come up with one this morning. Any suggestions? While you think on that, here's some non-Errata errata ...-- Brad Hawpe came off the DL Friday and blasted a two-run homer. Then yesterday, he hit a grand slam. After a shitty April and May, everyone probably forgot that he had 116 RBI last year. Hell, I even gave him up as a throw-in on a trade earlier this month. But that manager ended up cutting him days later when he suddenly needed the DL spot. So I picked him back up today.-- Thank you, Oliver Perez. Now, I'm not saying run and pick Oll...

Dayan Viciedo Defects From Cuba
2008-06-08 11:37:00
According to Jorge Ebro and Wilfredo Cancio Isla of the Miami Herald, Dayan Viciedo, a 19 year old Cuba n ballplayer, has defected from his home country and arrived in Miami with renewed motivation.  This is a new name for me, but Ebro and Cancio shed some light on the arrival of a promising new talent:  "Born March 10, 1989... Viciedo is regarded as the best Cuban baseball player in the past eight years after Kendry Morales, who defected in 2004 and now plays in the Los Angeles Angels' system.'Dayán is going to spark a lot of talk in the majors,'' said his agent, Puerto Rican lawyer Jaime Torres, 'He has arrived with youth, he is very versatile and his conditioning is exceptional. We will soon see him wearing the uniform of a major league team.'"Viciedo is 6'2", 202 lbs capable of playing SS, 3B, and OF.  According to the Havana Journal, at 16 he was the youngest Cuban All Star in history.  At 18, he was chosen to play in the World Baseball Classic in the ...

Fantasy Errata
2008-06-08 04:51:00
-- Jeff Keppinger may be back in a week or two. I'd stash him away if I had a free DL slot. The shortstop position is just looking more and more grim as the weeks go by.-- Well, we're well into June, and it was about time for Joakim Soria to blow a save. I'd cut him immediately. Just kidding.-- Ty Wigginton really needs to be owned in more leagues.-- Same goes for Jeremy Guthrie, whose unfair win totals and ugly first few weeks mask about a month of dominance.-- A home run for Delmon Young! He's off the schneid! Victor Martinez remains the only position player likely drafted in every league without a homer.-- Russell Martin's stolen base and homer today put him on pace for, I don't know, a 12/10 season? Something like that, anyway. I'd use today's effort as a launching pad to sell high. -- Joe Crede has four home runs over the last two days. There's really nothing you can do with this fantasy-wise, as you can't expect it to continue, nor can you retroactively pick him up a...

Scouting the AL Central
2008-06-08 03:26:00
BY ADAM RONIS CHICAGO WHITE SOX Buy low -- Nick Swisher: Swisher has been awful this season. He has just five homers and 16 RBIs in 205 at-bats. He had 22 homers last season and 35 two years ago, so the power is there. He can't get much worse and he shouldn't cost much right now. Sell high -- Carlos Quentin: I wouldn't rush to deal him because I think he's legit. He's been a highly touted prospect since he came up with the Diamondbacks. He had a shoulder injury last season and didn't even have a starting job locked up in the spring. He looks like a different hitter with his approach at the plate. He's walking a lot more; he has a 36/30 K/BB ratio. His hot start, though, might get you a piece with more of a track record. Pickup: Alexei Ramirez: He's been hot since early May and is eligible in some leagues at second base and outfield. CLEVELAND INDIANS Buy low -- C.C. Sabathia: After a poor start the other day and overall bad numbers, there might be another chance to attain hi...
