Battling more than the Redskins
2007-10-14 16:35:00
As the Green Bay Packers take on the Washington Redskin s today, watch as running back DeShawn Wynn tries to overcome his battle with dehydration.Wynn will have a special bottle on sidelines that will aid him in replenishing fluids and electrolytes in hopes that he won't have to exit the game. The bottle will likely contain a mix of water, sports drink, and special additives to prevent any cramps or dehydration problems. Rachel Nichols of ESPN reports that Wynn has been instructed be within a one foot radius of the bottle at all times on Sunday.Of course, the lower temperatures and rain in the forecast should help.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Junius Coston would be this week's backup center for the game against the Washington Redskins on Sunday, but he is listed as questionable for the game. And it's not like starter Jason Spitz has been 100% healthy this season either. He's been battling calf issues since the season opener. So who do the Packers turn to if Spitz and Coston happen to be injured?"Juice (Junius Coston) is the backup center, and we worked a couple guys today," head coach Mike McCarthy is quoted as saying. "Daryn Colledge has some limited experience there. Mark Tauscher has been an emergency center for us in the past, so those two guys worked a little bit today."Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.

Losing the challenge
2007-10-12 13:15:00
Remember when Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy lost a challenge when the spot of the football was moved last week? It's gotten fans of Titletown riled up because the Packers were forced to lose a timeout despite the ball being moved. Thanks to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, NFL director of officiating Mike Perreira helped to given an explanation on the NFL Network with host Rich Eisen:Eisen: "Even though McCarthy was right that the spot was wrong, the Packers were still charged a timeout because it was still a first down. What's the ruling?"Perreira: "There's only one time you can challenge the spot of the ball and that's in relationship to a first down. The question was, 'Was this a first down or not?' So the challenge from Mike McCarthy was that the spot of the ball was short of the first down. So when we looked at it, we actually put the ball back 6 inches but the status of the down didn't change, no aspect of the play changed, so it is a charged timeout.People ha...

Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones apparently hasn't learned his lesson quite yet."James Jones fumbled after being stripped returning a kickoff," writes Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel while reporting on Thursday's practice. This comes on the heels of Jones's two fumble game that was costly in a loss to the Bears.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Green Bay Packers current starting right guard Junius Coston was added to the team's injury report on Thursday."The injury report wasn't released until after coach Mike McCarthy addressed reporters, and no further information was provided," reports Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Coston participated in the hour-plus of practice that was open to reporters and was listed as 'limited participation.'"With Scott Wells out for Sunday and Junius Coston hurting, expect to see Allen Barbre active for the first time all season.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Robinson awaits NFL decision
2007-10-11 13:17:00
Koren Robins on is awaiting word from the NFL to see if he'll be reinstated into the league. In a news conference, Brett Favre confirmed that he spoke to Robinson by phone on Tuesday."I'm not the commissioner but I think there needs to be some positive(s)," Favre is quoted as saying. "There haven't been a whole lot of positives as far as suspensions and things of that nature and it would be nice. I'm a little bit biased obviously, but I think he's done everything he's been asked to do. And it's time to set a good example that you can resurrect not only your career but your life."Favre said that Robinson is looking forward to meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell this week, but such a meeting might not even be necessary.NFL senior vice president Greg Aiello said in an e-mail to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, "There is no meeting scheduled with the commissioner. Such a meeting is not required. The petition for reinstatement is under review. When a decision is made, it will be...

Can Jackson contribute?
2007-10-11 02:46:00
Second round draft choice Brandon Jackson is healthy once again for the Green Bay Packers, but could he be falling down the depth chart?Jackson practiced on Wednesday and is not listed on the team's injury report.Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette writes, "Even if Jackson's healthy, it's not clear whether coaches would consider activating him instead of Ryan Grant, a core special-teams player. McCarthy has said before he's reluctant to dress four running backs, and DeShawn Wynn and Vernand Morency are locked into their roles."It will be a tough choice for the Packers who had their biggest rushing week of the year without Jackson this past Sunday. If Jackson doesn't play, it would leave the Packers with their top two draft picks from 2007 as contributing very little to the team.First round draft choice Justin Harrell was active for the first time all year last week against the Chicago Bears, but played in no more than a handful of plays.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Trade deadline looms
2007-10-10 13:16:00
Even with glaring needs in the running game, the Green Bay Press-Gazette's headline concerning the Packers today trumpets, "Deal at trade deadline is unlikely."Even if it is unlikely, it's not for a lack of players including at least one highly regarded player."The most intriguing running back that may or may not be on the market is Michael Turner, the backup to LaDainian Tomlinson in San Diego," reports Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Turner was the subject of offseason trade rumors but was never dealt. He's scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, and he'll likely be in line for a big-money contract when he hits the market."The probem is that even though there may be some players out there, the Packers are not the only team looking for help at running back."If the Packers were in the market for a running back, they'd face some competition," writes Demovsky. "Tampa Bay, which has lost its top-two backs, Cadillac Williams and Michael Pittman, to injuries, is de...

Favre to be honored
2007-09-20 13:17:00
Brett Favre is three touchdowns away from tying Dan Marino's NFL record for career touchdown passes, and the Green Bay Packers are planning on honoring Favre when he does so.Right now Packers CEO Bob Harlan is in the planning phases as to how to proceed."Harlan said he was not aware of any league rule that would prevent the game from being stopped to honor Favre, but it needs to be cleared with the league and CBS, which is televising the game," reports Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.The following week's game is at Minnesota where he may not be honored. In fact, Favre is only two away from tying the all time interception record. He could easily be mocked by Minnesota fans.Good luck, Brett. Everyone hopes you tie it or break it this week. Besides, three or four touchdowns against the Chargers would be pretty good.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.
Congrats to Favre

Quarterback Brett Favre was honored by the league for some inspiring play the past Sunday."Favre was named the NFC's player of the week for his performance against the Giants on Sunday, when he completed 29-of-38 passes for 286 yards and three touchdowns with one interception," reports Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.Is it too early to say Pro Bowl yet? Montgomery makes progress
2007-09-20 02:00:00
Green Bay Packers defensive end Michael Mont gomery made decisive progress today at practice for the first time since sustaining a debilitating knee injury weeks ago.Montgomery actually practiced today for the first time since training camp, which is a good sign considering the uphill battle he faces in becoming game ready. Not all is rosy quite yet, though. Head coach Mike McCarthy has already ruled Montgomery out for Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers.Maybe one more week.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.

Packers add 2 to practice squad
2007-09-19 13:15:00
The Green Bay Packers added wide receiver Onrea Jones and guard Chris Patrick (pictured) to the practice squad on Tuesday.Quarterback Dalton Bell was released. It was surprising to see the Packers release Bell now that Carlyle Holiday is out for the season on injured reserve. Holiday was the emergency third string quarterback, and he at least had some collegiate experience. The third string quarterbacks now are Ruvell Martin and Charles Woodson, neither of whom even have any collegiate experience.Jones and Patrick do fill needs, though. With Holiday out for the season, Jones fits the team need for depth at wide receiver.Likewise, Patrick adds depth along the offensive line that has seen recent injuries to Tony Moll, Jason Spitz and Tony Palmer."Patrick, who played at Nebraska, spent time with the New York Giants and New England Patriots during training camp this summer," reports the Green Bay Press-Gazette.Photo credit: Omaha World-HeraldWelcome to the Railbird feed. TV time
2007-09-19 13:12:00
The Green Bay Packers had a good showing on television on Sunday, but not as good as last year."The Green Bay Packers at New York Giants game Sunday afternoon on WITI-TV (Channel 6) had a rating of 34.2 or 301,986 households," reports Bob Wolfley of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "That rating is down 9.5% from the game in Week 2 last season, New Orleans at Green Bay, which had a rating of 37.8 or 332,791 households."Given the Packers' current level of success, it won't be surprising when they start surpassing last year's numbers.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Former Green Bay Packer defensive lineman Nate Hill died on Tuesday. Hill was a sixth round draft choice of the team back in 1988."A 6-foot-4, 273-pounder, he played in four games with the Packers as a defensive end, wearing No. 90. Williams succeeds in return role
2007-09-19 00:08:00
We can say this. Will Blackmon has his work cut out for him once he recovers from his broken thumb. Tramon Williams has taken the kick return role and ran with it. Literally.Williams may stay as the primary kick return man all season long no matter what Blackmon's health may be thanks to his early success."Williams, a first-year cornerback from Louisiana Tech, was a long shot to make the roster when training camp opened, but showed some flashes as a returner," reports Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "After averaging 25.0 yards per kickoff return in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles, he broke a 42-yard return on the opening kickoff of the third quarter of Sunday's win over the New York Giants. It was the longest kickoff return by a Packers player in more than a year. The long return in 2006 was only 35 yards."It's possible that Williams may even take over the punt return role, although Charles Woodson is doing an adequate job right now."Woodson likes to do it," s...

Palmer hurt in Packers win
2007-09-18 13:16:00
Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Tony Palmer may be lost for the season as he suffered a small bone facture in his neck on Sunday against the Giants."Palmer didn't fly home with the team on Sunday night, instead spending the night in a New Jersey hospital for precautionary reasons," reports Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "His injury originally was diagnosed as a neck stinger, but tests showed a small bone fracture in his neck. It's possible Palmer could be lost for the season."It's too bad for the Packers and for Palmer, who had recently started contributing to the Packers' successes.Palmer had entered Sunday's game on several occassions along the offensive line in the Packers' goal line "Jumbo" package. One particular play resulted in a DeShawn Wynn touchdown run.Palmer also was heavily responsible for a bit of spark in the kick return game where he was part of the wedge opening things for Tramon Williams. The Packers did receive a bit of good news in that To...

Jennings taking it slow
2007-09-18 13:10:00
The Green Bay Packers learned a lesson last week with wide receiver Greg Jennings recovering from a hamstring injury."Jennings practiced at full speed on Wednesday, but really shouldn't have because he was still experiencing discomfort," according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Because he wanted to play, Jennings sent signals to the coaches and medical staff that he was doing much better, but it turned out he paid for it Thursday when his hamstring tightened."Head coach Mike McCarthy indicated that Jennings might not practice until Thursday or Friday this week if at all to help better prepare him to play in Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers. With the loss of Carlyle Holiday, the Packers have even more of a need for Jennings to play. Although Chris Francies was activated to help fill the gap.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.

Third string saga
2007-09-18 13:01:00
With wide receiver and emergency quarterback Carlyle Holiday out for the season on injured reserve, the Green Bay Packers have had to go another route in regards to finding another third string quarterback.Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette writes, "Woodson always has wanted to play on offense, something he did in college, and he might get his chance. McCarthy on Monday mentioned Woodson, who played cornerback and receiver during his college career at Michigan, and receiver Ruvell Martin as possible emergency quarterbacks. With only two quarterbacks, the Packers had designated receiver Carlyle Holiday as their emergency quarterback. Holiday, a former quarterback at Notre Dame, was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Saturday with a knee injury. Martin last played quarterback in high school. It's not clear when, or if, Woodson played quarterback."The Packers have a new quarterback on the practice squad in Dalton Bell, but he's only eligible to play if he's elevated...

Wynn impresses in win
2007-09-17 13:05:00
DeShawn Wynn could be the panacea for what ails the Green Bay running game. Wynn was one of the lone impressive items in what otherwise is a woeful running offense. Two stunning plays were what set Wynn apart from the rest of the pedestrian plays made from the running game."One was his 38-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, when he burst up the middle on a draw play, bounced a little to the outside and outran everyone for the score," according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "The second was a check-down reception on a third-and-9 deep in Packers territory late in the second quarter. The 232-pounder made a hard cut back to avoid a tackler and picked up 10 yards to keep the drive alive and nearly run out the clock to halftime. He also had a 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter on another draw play."I'll admit I was very skeptical about Wynn especially during the preseason when he missed three games and many practices while nursing an injury. The Packers showed some foresigh...

Collins sits practice out
2007-09-13 13:14:00
Starting free safety Nick Coll ins sat Wednesday's practice for the Green Bay Packers. The reason for his absence is unknown, but head coach Mike McCarthy is quoted as saying that Collins's absence is related to a "positive personal matter.""Charlie Peprah likely is taking all the work in Collins' place, because rookie Aaron Rouse (hamstring) remains limited and left the practice field early," reports Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.It doesn't appear to be an injury related absence, which is good news. Barnett not worried by charges
2007-09-13 13:10:00
Green Bay Packers linebacker Nick Barnet t will be charged with two counts of misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges stemming from an off-field incident at a nightclub this past June.Barnett is not likely to be suspended by the NFL despite the recent rash of suspensions sent down from new commissioner Roger Goodell."I'm poised to have a great year as a Packer," Barnett is quoted as saying in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I can't worry about that too much. I can only control what I control, and that's here playing football with my teammates."As long as Barnett plays like he did in week one, a great year will come to him.
