Cuts are coming
2008-06-24 08:57:00
The Green Bay Packers have recently cut undrafted rookie wide receiver Rod Harper shortly after minicamp practices. In the view of the Packers, Harper probably wasn't cutting it. Add that to the wealth of wide receiver the team already has, and there was dead weight that needed to be cut.But Harper's release brings to light another issue that the Packers are going to have to deal with shortly.NFL rules state that teams may only have 80 players on their roster under contract. The Packers currently have 77 players under contract, but none of their nine draft choices nor Ryan Grant have yet to sign. Now that mincamp has concluded, there is a little more than a month of dead time where teams will start to sign their draft choices. It's the perfect time to get deals done with nothing else going on. Within the next couple of weeks, the draft choices will start signing one by one. With 77 players signed right now, the Packers have room for three more rookies or Grant to sign on the dotted ...

Allen stands out at minicamp
2008-06-23 09:22:00
Every year there's a rookie or two that goes undrafted yet beats all odds and makes the Green Bay Packers' 53 man roster.Last year that player was defensive tackle Daniel Muir. Another notable Packer that went undrafted was Tony Fisher who became the team's third down back in his first season. This year the early favorite to make the team as an undrafted rookie free agent is wide receiver Jake Allen . So who is this relatively unknown player...?Allen earned first team All-American honors in Division III while playing at Mississippi College. While there, he set school records in receptions (152), receiving yards (2,867) and receiving touchdowns (26) despite playing for only three seasons.During the 2007 season alone he caught 61 passes for 1,254 yards and 12 touchdowns. It looks like Allen has already made his mark with the Packers. During the recently concluded minicamp, he caught the eye of a couple of journalists.According to Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, "Jake Al...
Talk of the town
2008-06-19 06:18:00
Green Bay Packers news has recently centered around the possibility of the trading for Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor.General manager Ted Thompson has apparently been in contact with the Miami Dolphins about their interest in dealing the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year."Packers general manager Ted Thompson recently discussed Taylor with defensive coordinator Bob Sanders and defensive tackles coach Robert Nunn, who both coached Taylor with the Dolphins," reports Greg Bedard for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Both assistants have a fondness for Taylor and would undoubtedly be in favor of acquiring the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year."It's been an interesting offseason for Taylor and the Dolphins. After reports the contrary, the Dolphins have more recently said they're interested in having Taylor play for them in 2008. However, all signs point to the Dolphins having interest in trading him despite a recent press conference in which Taylor denied making trade ...

Packer paintball
2008-06-19 06:11:00
The Green Bay Packer s took off from their regularly scheduled minicamp practice on Wednesday in place of a team building exercise. Paintball .The team went to nearby Commando Paintball in Abrams where they conducted an eight team tournament."The winning team consisted of running backs coach Edgar Bennett, defensive end Aaron Kampman, safety Tyrone Culver, fullback Korey Hall, running back Vernand Morency, receiver Brett Swain, and Ricky Brumfield, a minority coaching intern from Fairmont State," reports Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.It's not uncommon for a team to take off a scheduled practice every once in a blue moon to do some sort of activity. In the past, the Packers have gone bowling or golfing as well.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.

Aaron Rodgers made this gesture during the Green Bay Packers' minicamp practice on Tuesday making reference to the rumor that he had gotten married this past weekend: There's no ring there. The story started when WLUK-TV in Green Bay erroneously reported on Sunday that Rodgers had gotten married. Rodgers did, indeed, attend a marriage recently, but it was not his own.Rodgers is starting to get more and more attention now that he's the starting quarterback for the Packers and has taken over for living-legend Brett Favre. For example: "Rodgers has done some national interviews," reports Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette," and his name popped up once recently on a Las Vegas celebrity-sightings blog, but he said he doesn't feel his life has changed much since Favre's retirement in March. About the highest-profile appearance he'll make will be at a celebrity golf tournament next month at Lake Tahoe in Nevada."Rodgers' new haircut got some attention too. Gone are the long...

Defense tests helmet radios
2008-06-18 07:07:00
One of the more interesting developments coming out of the Green Bay Packers' minicamp practices on Tuesday was that the defense was using helmets with wireless radios in them for the first time.Lori Nickel of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports, "This year, the helmets of two defensive players per team will feature the same dots, now that the NFL is allowing one defensive player on the field at a time to have the same wireless communication with coaches."Both middle linebacker Nick Barnett and safety Nick Collins tried out the device on Tuesday, although it would seem that Barnett would be the front-runner to receive most of the communication.Barnett not only received defensive signals from coaches in the past, but he also rarely leaves the field even when the Packers go into their nickel and dime packages.Barnett even gave a little jab to the New England Patriots when he was quoted in the Journal Sentinel as saying, "It will take some time to see how this will benefit us. Shifts along the line
2008-06-18 06:52:00
Injuries forced some shuffling of the offensive line during Tuesday's minicamp practices for the Green Bay Packers.First of all, guard Junius Coston sat out with an injury. "(Head coach Mike) McCarthy said Coston is fine and would be practicing if it was a game week," reports Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.Add on top of that Chad Clifton taking precautionary measures by sitting out both of yesterday's practices and center Scott Wells sitting out only the afternoon practice. Wells was seen riding a stationary bike during workouts instead. "Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said he didn't know what was wrong with Wells, but it couldn't have been too serious," writes Bedard. Those injuries had the Packers doing some shifting. Perhaps the most noteworthy was Tony Moll getting in some work at left tackle. He has spent most of his Packers' career on the right side of the line at both guard and tackle, but he seems content to focus on left tackle for the time being."They...

Minicamp begins today
2008-06-17 09:06:00
The Green Bay Packers' three day minicamp is about to commence at 10:15 today run through Thursday. The minicamp is basically an extension of the Organized Team Activities (OTAs), which concluded last week. About the only difference is that the Packers will conduct two practices today and tomorrow. There will be only one practice on Thursday.Another difference is that this minicamp is mandatory. Players must attend or be subject to fine. It hardly affects the Packers, though, as all of their players were in attendance in the last two weeks of OTAs.All three morning practices at 10:15 are open to the public for about an hour. Fans will be allowed to go inside the Don Hutson Center where all practices will be held.Tuesday's and Wednesday's afternoon sessions will be open to the media only.Enjoy it railbirds. It will be your last chance to see the Packers in action for 38 days until they report for training camp.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.

Rookies visit Hall of Fame
2008-06-17 07:53:00
Former long snapper and current director of player development Rob Davis took all of the Green Bay Packers rookies on a trip to the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio as part of the league's rookie orientation program. All nine Packers draft picks plus their free agents made the trip to the ol' Orange Squeezer to get a feel for the history and tradition of the NFL. It's part of an on-going program to help first year players get acclimated to what they're about to experience."Davis hopes in future years the league will continue the Hall of Fame trips as part of its rookie orientation program, which continued on Monday with the first NFL Player Brand University and also includes the annual Rookie Symposium in San Diego from June 29-July 2," reports Mike Spofford of the Packers official website.Click on the above link to find out more about their trip including the reactions of the first two Packers draft choices, Jordy Nelson and Brian Brohm.Welcome to the Railbird feed. KGB on Forbes list
2008-06-17 07:42:00
Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila isn't a billionaire, but he made mention in Forbes .com article for the highest paid bench-warmers in all of sports."With a tight salary cap playing a big role in setting NFL salaries and bonuses, players were measured by how much cap space they took on their teams' payrolls," writes Tom Van Riper of Forbes.com. "High salaried vets relegated to part-time duty include Jets quarterback Chad Pennington, Packers defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila and Raiders running back LaMont Jordan."KGB plays a valuable role in providing a pass rush, but just how valuable is he? Is he worth the money the Packers are paying him even though he's probably playing less than 50% of the defensive snaps? The Packers hold very little leverage if they want KGB to play. They can ask him to re-work his contract and take a pay cut, but they risk alienating a productive player that could result in a hold out instead. And with all the salary cap space the Packers currently have, it's not like...

Ex-Packer found unconscious in Las Vegas
2008-06-17 07:36:00
Former Green Bay Packer wide receiver Javon Walker was found unconscious on a Las Vegas street, the victim of a possible robbery.Walker was taken to a hospital and has what's been described as "significant injuries" including a fractured orbital bone. It's been mostly downhill for Walker ever since leaving the Packers after threatening to hold out prior to the 2005 season. He enjoyed one good season with the Denver Broncos since, but has been injury-plagued for the most part. He's now a member of the Oakland Raiders, and his status is unclear until more reports begin to trickle in regarding his incident in Las Vegas.Welcome to the Railbird feed. HD owners rejoice
2008-06-17 06:37:00
In what has been a convoluted and complicated matter, an agreement has been reached that will allow Green Bay Packers games to be broadcast in high definition. In the past, what has happened according to Warren Gerds of the Green Bay Press-Gazette is that, "Most Packers games are carried on WLUK by way of the Fox network. High-definition signals of WLUK have not run on cable and satellite systems, upsetting HD set owners."But the situation is now resolved and fans will be able to watch their favorite players such as Donald Driver and A.J. Hawk in all their HD glory."LIN TV, which owns WLUK, Channel 11, has reached agreements with Comcast cable and the DISH Network and DirecTV satellite companies for retransmission of the station's signals in analog and high definition," writes Gerds.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Driver kick starts softball game
2008-06-16 08:00:00
It's a good thing Donald Driver took up the game of football instead of baseball or softball or any other sport for that matter. He's a Pro Bowler on the gridiron, but Driver had a lifeless day on the softball diamond yesterday as his offensive team lost to the defense 23-21 in the charity game Driver took over from Brett Favre in Fox Cities Stadium. But even though Driver's team lost, he helped create a lot of winners including the 5,000 plus fans that went to the event. It was the first time Driver hosted the event since Favre retired in a game where the money went to Driver's foundation.Brett Christopherson of PackersNews.com reports, "Driver's foundation, launched in the spring of 2001, primarily assists homeless families and those lacking in sound educational opportunities throughout Wisconsin, Mississippi and his hometown of Houston."As far as the on-field exploits go, cornerback Charles Woodson and long snapper Thomas Gafford led all players with five hits apiece. But the...

Morency sits behind eight ball
2008-06-12 06:05:00
Vernand Morency sits in a precarious position on the Green Bay Packers roster. It was just about a year ago when he was expected to be the starting running back with the loss of Ahman Green in free agency. Now it's not even known if he'll make the roster this season. In a continuing series, it's put up or shut up time for Morency joining the likes of Jarrett Bush, Tony Moll and Michael Montgomery. It wasn't that long ago that Morency was traded for by the Packers from the Houston Texans for Samkon Gado. Not long after joining the team, Morency went on to rush for over 100 yards in a game against the Arizona Cardinals on only 11 carries. Fans were hopeful Morency would go on to become the next Ahman Green at the time. Morency hasn't had a 100 yard rushing since. Unfortunately, injuries have been part of his woes. And the Packers have moved on without him. They've since traded for Ryan Grant and drafted Brandon Jackson who appear to be options A and B, respectively, on the Packe...

Montgomery has competition for spot
2008-06-11 05:48:00
In what is becoming a series of sorts, it's put up or shut up time for Michael Montgomery, defensive end for the Green Bay Packers. The fourth year pro is in a very similar situation to fellow Packers Jarrett Bush and Tony Moll whose careers are on the line as they work through a crucial offseason. All other things being equal, Montgomery's greatest competition for a a job comes from newly acquired defensive end Jeremy Thompson, a fifth round draft choice whom general manager Ted Thompson though of highly enough to trade up and grab the Wake Forest product.Of course, the usual suspects remain as backup defensive end options as well. Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila returns, albeit from knee surgery, in his usual pass rush capacity. It's doubtful Montgomery could take away that job from "KGB." Then there's also Jason Hunter who's smaller stature also makes him more of a pass rush specialist, but he's also one of the team's more valuable special teams players.Working in his favor is the fact...

Moll enters critical season
2008-06-10 05:55:00
It's put up or shut up time for offensive lineman Tony Moll. Not unlike the situation faced by Green Bay Packers cornerback Jarrett Bush, Moll must prove his worth and fast to preserve his spot on the 53 man roster. The third year pro entered the NFL as a 5th round draft choice in 2006 and went on to start 10 games as a rookie. It was a promising start to a career.Unfortunately, injuries derailed his sophomore season. Back problems forced Moll into a backup role that rarely had him see the field. Now that the Packers have drafted two offensive linemen in the 2008 draft, Moll faces an even bigger battle than he had entering the offseason. Both rookies Breno Giacomini and Josh Sitton look to spend most of their time on the right side of the offensive line where Moll has spent most of his time.Perhaps the good news for Moll is that both Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher, who have been the Packers' bookend tackles for the better part of a decade, will be close to retirement soon. Even so, t...

Rookie QBs receive praise
2008-06-09 06:00:00
Rookie quarterbacks Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn have been receiving praise from Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy after this past week's OTA practice open to the public. In a press conference following the practice McCarthy, in particular, singled out Brohm for the progress he is making."I'll tell you, Brian Brohm is as sharp a young quarterback that I have been around," McCarthy is quoted as saying, "and that's a big statement because I have been fortunate enough to coach some very bright quarterbacks in their first and second year in the league. I have been very impressed with the way he picks up the scheme and the way he is able to communicate it."In an interview with Aaron Rodgers that aired on ESPN's SportsCenter over the weekend, Rodgers said that he didn't think there would be a quarterback controversy with Brohm joining the Packers.McCarthy also had a few comments about Flynn and the team in general during his press conference."Matt is getting much better," said ...

Still no positive news on DeShawn Wynn
2008-06-07 13:58:00
Ever since DeShawn Wynn joined the Packers he has flashed enormous potential. Wynn has the proper measurements to be a successful back in this league 5-10, 230 or so and 4.45 speed in the forty. So why isn't the opportunity of a lifetime going all the way upstairs to his brain. DeShawn flashed that ability in his rookie year against the Chicago Bears. The Packer offense lined up and DeShawn Wynn ran the ball right up the gut for forty yards against a stingy Bears defense. But what was illogical was what happened following that play. Instead of staying in for the next offensive play DeShawn decides to take a breather on the sidelines on one of the riding bikes.Another example of DeShawn Wynn's ability was on display in the Packers second game last season against the New York Giants. The play in questioned was a simple dump off pass on the left side of the field, in which Wynn sprinted thirty two yards to pay dirt. Rest of the game did not hear a beep out of him.Edgar Bennett was st...

2008-06-06 13:00:00
Tight end Tory Humphrey rejoined the Green Bay Packers this week during the Organized Activity Practices (OTAs) for the first time since since breaking his leg and missing all of 2007.Humphrey sits in as good a position as possible for coming off an injury which ruined his entire last season. With Donald Lee being the only other veteran tight end on the team, Humphrey is competing with third round draft choice Jermichael Finley and three other undrafted rookies for a job. This past Wednesday was the first time the public was able to see Humphrey practice, but head coach Mike McCarthy indicated that Humphrey had actually returned to practice earlier in the week."It was actually Tory's second day," McCarthy told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, "and it was great to see him back going through everything It has been a long road back for him and he has done a great job from the standpoint of being here all of the time, throughout the season, throughout his rehab, and he looks good. Bush's last chance?
2008-06-05 12:55:00
This might resemble thinking out loud, but could the switch to safety be Jarrett Bush's last shot with the Green Bay Packers?During the team's Organized Team Activity practices, head coach Mike McCarthy indicated that Bush would be working at safety. It's unknown whether the switch is full-time or Bush is just an attempt to make Bush more versatile and able to play multiple positions. In any case, it's possible that this might be the last opportunity for Bush to prove his worth to the defense. It may be weird to say that about only a third year player, especially one with a lot of athletic ability, but declining production and an infusion of young players could have Bush on the fence.Bush started out the 2007 season as the team's primary nickel back seeing a lot of snaps on the defensive side of the ball. But as the season wore on, he lost playing time to players like Will Blackmon and Tramon Williams. Now with cornerback Patrick Lee being added in the second round of this year's...

Chillar's role on the team
2008-06-04 13:01:00
Through the first several Organized Team Activity (OTA) practices, Brady Poppina remains the starting strong side linebacker for the Green Bay Packers with new free agent pickup Brandon Chillar as the backup. It's still early, and it's possible that Chillar could push for a starting job by September, but head coach Mike McCarthy seems set on having Chillar serve a very particular role for the Packers for the time being."Chillar gives us excellent flexibility," McCarthy told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "He can line up in all three positions, and by the time we're finished with our spring football here, he'll be able to play all three positions. He'll be part of the sub-packages, sub-personnel. Very athletic, and he definitely can run, and you have to be able to run at the linebacker position in our scheme. Really I like his work ethic. He came in from day one, jumped right into the off-season program, didn't miss a beat, and he's really done a very nice job of fitting in he...

Logjam at middle linebacker
2008-06-03 13:02:00
When the Green Bay Packers are forced with trimming their roster down to 53 players in early September, they could face some tough decisions at middle linebacker. The Packers currently have four middle linebackers that might deserve to be playing on Sundays, but unfortunately only one can play at a time.A lot can happen between now and September, but right now the Packers have Nick Barnett, Desmond Bishop, Abdul Hodge, and Danny Lansanah all pushing for playing time.Barnett is coming off his best season in the NFL at middle linebacker, and there's no reason to think he won't be the starter come opening day. At the very least, there's plenty of competition to keep Barnett sharp once training camp opens. Plus the Packers look to have a viable backup if anything should happen to Barnett. The top backup as of this moment is Bishop. With Barnett gone from this past Thursday's OTA practice, Bishop has been getting plenty of repetitions with the No. 1 defense too. And according to report...

Woodson shows at OTA
2008-05-30 17:01:00
Green Bay Packers cornerback Charles Woodson was in attendance at the team's organized team activity (OTA) practice on Thursday. The fact that Woodson was in attendance was significant in that he has been known as a notorious skipper of non-mandatory offseason practices. This could be a visible sign of the ever-improving relationship between Woodson and head coach Mike McCarthy. It was reported by the Green Bay Press-Gazette shortly after the season that Woodson and McCarthy didn't exactly see eye to eye when the defensive back first arrived in Green Bay before the 2006 season. However, there's been an increased amount of respect shown from both sides in what has become a situation that not only both can live with but seem to be happy with as well. It's even more impressive that Woodson is participating in the OTA considering he had an MRI for his injured knee back in January although no surgery was needed. The knee was bad enough to force Woodson to miss two regular season starts, ...

He credits his Adonis physique to 20-plus years in martial arts, during which he claims to have earned black belts in kung-fu, taekwondo and Muay Thai."Sikahema, meanwhile, is most remembered for shadow boxing the goal post after one of his punt return touchdowns while playing with the Philadelphia Eagles. Packers admit they're not big on free agency?
2008-05-28 12:54:00
The story in the Green Bay Press-Gazette is about running back Ryan Grant's contract negotiations with the Packers , but the bigger story may be Green Bay admitting that they're not big spenders in the unrestricted free agency.Grant's agent Alan Herman spoke to the Press-Gazette regarding how the Packers like to do business in the NFL."The important issue is the club has indicated they're not big players in the free-agent market and they like to take care of their own," told the Press-Gazette. "Ryan had truly an extraordinary year and it wasn't like he was a flash in the pan. He played 12 games, that's a lot of games, at the highest level. Clearly, they know what they have and that's why the opportunity to get something done and keep him there for a long time is kind of apparent."General manager Ted Thompson showed his biggest willingness to be a spender in free agency before the 2006 season when he signed Ryan Pickett, Charles Woodson and Marquand Manuel all to lucrative cont...

New look offensive line
2008-05-27 13:18:00
There's been a couple changes along the offensive line in Green Bay, and while the makeup of the starting lineup won't be drastically different from last year, there will be some tweaks. It looks like one of the biggest competitions from OTAs all the way through training camp will be at left guard where second year pro Allen Barbre will be competing with incumbent Daryn Colledge.Barbre and Colledge have been switching off every other day at left guard as the starter through the OTA practices now in their second week. Both Barbre and Colledge have been talked about as possible left tackles, but for the moment being, they're battling it out at left guard.Out of the competition at left guard is Junius Coston who got a fair amount of time at the position a year ago. Coston's future with the Packers seems to be whether he can hold down the backup center position.Coston has thus far been focusing on the center position during the OTAs and has not been in the mix for a starting guard po...
