Billingsley: Will Start Season As Relief Pitcher
2007-03-16 18:50:00
Chad Billingsley will be pitching out of the bullpen for at least the start of the 2007 season. One of the Dodgers' top young arms, Billingsley has made only six professional relief appearances -- two in 2005 at Double-A, two in 2006 with the Dodgers during the regular season and two against the Mets in last year's playoffs. With Billingsley out of the starting mix, Hong-Chih Kuo, Brett Tomko and Mark Hendrickson are the front-runners to claim to the fifth spot in the Dodgers rotation, with non-roster invitee Joe Mays and Eric Stults seemingly on the outside looking in. All five remaining candidates have pitched relatively well this spring. Source: MLB.com

Mussina: Struggles With Command
2007-03-16 18:45:00
Mike Mussina allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, walked one and struck out one over three innings in Tuesday?s loss to the Reds. Mussina has struggled with his command and topped out at about 86 mph this spring, which explains why his ERA is a bloated 5.62. Nevertheless, Yankees manager Joe Torre isn?t too concerned. "It's no different than it's been in past years," Torre said. "He just doesn't have his arm strength yet.? The 38-year-old Mussina is looking to regain the form he showed in 2006, when he went 15-7 with a 3.51 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 172 strikeouts.

Encarnacion: Will Likely Begin Season On DL
2007-03-16 18:42:00
Making slow progress in his rehabilitation from offseason surgery on his left wrist, Juan Encarnacion will likely begin the season on the disabled list. Encarnacion, who refused to offer a specific return date, has begun taking batting practice but still feels weakness and occasional pain in the wrist. With the veteran right fielder likely on the shelf, teammates Preston Wilson, John Rodriguez and So Taguchi will compete for playing time in his spot.Source: MLB.com

Edmonds: May Start Season On DL
2007-03-16 18:39:00
Recovering from offseason surgery on both his shoulder and foot, Jim Edmonds is a strong bet to start the season on the disabled list. The Cardinals' decision to grant Edmonds with a two-year contract extension this past offseason seemed to express a sense of optimism about his health. But mounting aches and pains suggest otherwise for the 36-year-old center fielder, who spent a large portion of 2006 sidelined with post-concussion syndrome. And though he's certainly played through injuries before, doing so into his late 30s won't be as easy. So Taguchi and Skip Schumaker are expected replace him in center. Source: MLB.com

Griffey Jr: Might Not Be Ready By Opening Day
2007-03-16 14:05:00
On the road back from a broken left hand, Ken Griffey Jr. might not be ready by Open ing Day. Griffey hasn't played in any exhibition games and has reported soreness after many of his batting-practice sessions over the past two weeks. "If it's March 14 and a guy hasn't been able to play yet, at some point, you've got to have some Spring Training," manager Jerry Narron said. "Hopefully, he'll be well enough to play here in a couple of days." Despite Narron's reservations, Griffey has not offered a timetable for his return to live action. "When I'm 100 percent, I'll play," Griffey said. "Not before that." Source: MLB.com

Reyes: Effective In Spring Training
2007-03-16 14:02:00
Anthony Reyes is incorporating his two-seam sinking fastball more effectively and confidently than ever before. With a tidy 0.90 ERA in Spring Training , Reyes is making strides toward becoming the front-line pitcher the Cardinals envisioned he'd become since his days in the Minors. With more movement on his fastball as well as a season of big-league growing pains and postseason experience under his belt, the 25-year-old right-hander makes for a great late-round buy, especially after owners are finished falling over one another to grab the Justin Verlanders and Aaron Harangs of the pitching market. Philip Hughes: Reassigned To Minors
2007-03-16 13:59:00
Reassigned to Minor League camp after an underwhelming spring (7.71 ERA in 4 2/3 innings), top prospect Phil ip Hughes will focus on further developing his changeup and slider, considered his two weakest offerings. Though highly touted, Hughes seemed level-headed about the demotion, viewing it as a challenge rather than a sign of failure. "You can't come in here and expect to get big-league hitters out with just two pitches," the 20-year-old right-hander said. "I knew that from the start, but it's a matter of going out there and being able to command the third and fourth pitches. That'll be a key for me." How long it takes Hughes to refine his tertiary and quaternary pitches will likely determine whether he's called up before the All-Star break or after it. Source: MLB.com

Podsednik: Could Be Ready By Opening Day
2007-03-16 13:56:00
Making his first Spring Training appearance in a ?B? game vs. the Rockies, Scott Pod sednik went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Podsednik had no problems running, which is a good sign for a player expected to deliver significant help in the stolen-base category, and his timing at the plate was surprisingly sharp considering how much time he?s missed. The 30-year-old still won?t offer a target date for his return, but there?s a chance he could be good to go by Open ing Day. Source: MLB.com

Greinke: Contending For Rotation Spot
2007-03-16 13:53:00
Contending for a spot in the Royals rotation, Zack Greinke had his best outing of the spring on Wednesday, striking out six and walking none over four shutout innings vs. the Rockies. Few Kansas City starters have Greinke's upside, even with his 2006 sabbatical. After all, not many 20-year-olds rack up a 1.16 WHIP and a 100/26 K/BB ratio in the Majors, which Greinke did as a rookie in 2004. Sure, it will probably take some time for him to regain such advanced strike-zone command, but he'll likely be good enough to make a rotation that sported baseball's worst ERA last year (5.65). Granderson: Trying To Cut Down On K's
2007-03-16 13:50:00
Curtis Grand erson fell a triple shy of the cycle in a 4-for-4 performance Wednesday. Grande rson had been working on shortening his swing after striking out an AL-leading 174 times in 2006, but that approach didn?t yield many hard-hit balls until Wedesday?s game against the Mets. The 26-year-old will have his work cut out for him as he learns to walk that fine line between being aggressive and taking what the pitcher gives him, but a sound judgment of the strike zone (66 walks in ?06) will help his cause. Now, if only he could also work on putting his speed to better use on the basepaths.Source: MLB.com

Isringhausen: Hip Appears Good
2007-03-16 13:34:00
Making his first appearance of the spring, closer Jason Isringhausen allowed two hits and struck out one over a scoreless inning of relief Thursday vs. the Dodgers. Though he hadn't seen big-league action since Sept. 6 of last year, Izzy looked sharp, throwing 14 of his 16 pitches for strikes. More importantly, he showed no ill effects from the hip surgery he underwent last September. Source: MLB.com

Sosa Added To Rangers 40-Man Roster
2007-03-16 13:26:00
Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said that Sammy Sosa , who came to camp with a Minor League contract, is being added to the 40-man roster. Sosa celebrated the news by blasting his third home run of the spring on Thursday. He?s certainly earned his spot on the roster by carrying a .464 average into the day, though it remains to be seen how well the 38-year-old will swing the bat once things crank up to full speed in the regular season. Duke: Named Pirates Opening Day Starter
2007-03-16 13:20:00
On Thursday, Pirate s manager Jim Tracy named Zach Duke as the Open ing Day starter. Interesting choice, as Duke (4.15 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 10 Ks in 13 IP) has been outperformed by Ian Snell (2.45 ERA, 0.64 WHIP, 13 Ks in 11 IP) this spring. Tracy likely gave Duke the nod because of his status as the team?s ?workhorse? -- he led the Bucs in starts (34) and innings (215 1/3) in 2006 -- though owners will want to pay more attention to Snell because of his strikeout ability. Maholm Has Solid Outing
2007-03-16 13:07:00
Paul Maholm threw 4 1/3 shutout innings vs. the Reds on Thursday, allowing no runs, no walks and two hits to go with three strikeouts. Maholm showed the kind of results he can deliver when he pounds the strike zone with his sinker, but it?s hard to get excited about a soft-tosser who rang up a 117/81 K/BB ratio in an uneven 2006 campaign. Chances are, there are more growing pains in store for the 24-year-old left-hander. Source: MLB.com

Roberts gives the Giants their most noted leadoff hitter since Kenny Lofton joined the club in July 2002 for their run to the World Series. Vizquel is a fine No. 2 hitter. Feliz struggled in the second half, and the hope is to keep him lower in the lineup, especially if he continues his routine of too many strikeouts and too few walks. The Giants need another big year out of Durham, who posted career highs with 26 homers and 93 RBIs, and all eyes will be on Aurilia, the former full-time shortstop who's returning to the Giants as an all-purpose infielder who could see significant time at first.Rotation1. Hawpe-Baker could be a strict platoon in right, but Baker is also being worked out at first base and could see considerable time there if Helton continues to have physical problems. Tulowitzki and Barmes will do battle for the shortstop position this spring. Barmes, 28, is a quality defender who is trying to re-find his swing. Tulowitzki, 22, is the future stud who may need a bit more seasoning, the possibility exists that Tulo will head to Triple-A for two or three months. C Chris Snyder/Miguel MonteroThere may never be an actual set lineup this season, as manager Bob Melvin predicts he'll mix and match most of the time, primarily because the club doesn't have a prototypical leadoff man or cleanup hitter. Drew looked like the leading candidate to lead off going into the spring, but now it appears Young or Byrnes will be the choice. Reserves Alberto Callaspo and Jeff DaVanon actually seem to be manager Bob Melvin's favorite options at the top of the order, so Young could conceivably bat first some days and sixth or seventh others. Byrnes seems set to bat first or fourth. If Byrnes leads off, Young could bat seventh, with Jackson, Quentin and Drew each moving up a spot. Either way, Young is still a fine sleeper in mixed leagues and worth pursuing in deeper formats. He could go 20-20 a...

While it's doubtful that Duncan will hit for average this year like he did last season, he could swat 25-30 homers even while sitting against lefties. Sanchez won the National League batting title with a .344 average last season while belting a league-leading 53 doubles. Bay has averaged 31 homers and 93 RBIs in his three full major league seasons. The Pirates believe Nady (.280 last season) and Paulino (.310) are ready to increase their power output this season to go along with high batting averages. Cliff Floyd will get plenty of playing time in left field, but Murton still looks like the best bet for at-bats in the second spot initially. DeRosa could possibly bat second, but he's been spending more time batting sixth and seventh this spring, making him look like a weaker pick. Jones is also a possibility as a No. 2 hitter. Perhaps he'll hit there when Murton is out of the lineup, opening up the fifth spot for Floyd. Beltran, Delgado and Wright each have 30-homer potential, and if Alou stays healthy, it would prevent pitchers from working around Wright. It might be a reach to expect Valentin to duplicate last year's power numbers. Green has gone from a power to a line drive hitter, but if the rest of the lineup produces, the Mets won't need him to go deep. Hermida is off to a slow start this spring, but publicly at least, the Marlins don't seem to be wavering in their commitment to the 23-year-old. His struggles would have to linger into the regular season for the team to turn to Joe Borchard or Cody Ross. ?
