Just how good are the new guys?
2008-05-27 18:13:00
We have an underlying discussion going on at MHR that hasn't yet had a devoted story. When some names get brought up, we either rally to the player's defense or express some concern. Let's devote a post to the dicussion and have it out. There are 5 positions on the team that (likely) have potential new starters, and six players. SAF may feature a new name (McCree or Manuel), but I would call the odds of this happening "even" to "less than likely". As a part of The Quest, let's take a moment to focus on our newest players that have better than even chances of starting. The longer serving players may have a better formulation of what The Quest is, but it is the internalization by the new players that may take up to 5 spots on the roster that may make a substantial impact. The positions, and the players I'm talking about, are: MLB - K2 (or Niko) In my camp are the folks that point to Seatle's love affair with the MLB who could have been a starter if it wasn't fo...

MHR's Forgotten Broncos -- Austin "Goose" Gonsoulin
2008-05-27 01:01:00
The Goose was and still is the greatest defensive back to ever play for the Denver Broncos .  Champ Bailey may one day break Austin Gonsoulin's many Bronco records, but until that happens he will have to play second fiddle to the great Goose. Gonsoulin played just eight seasons, yet his play during his short career earned him the unique honor of being one of the four original Ring of Fame members in 1984.  I consider him to be among the forgotten Broncos that deserve to be in the hall of fame, but has been snubbed thus far by those who hold the power of selection.       Gonsoulin was born in Port Arthur, Texas where he played running back and defensive back in high school while also starring in track.  He was chosen to All-District and All-State in his senior year before heading to Baylor where he added receiver to his list of playing positions. This versatility made him a complete player when the Denver Broncos brought him in to play defensive ...

Broncos - Position Comparison '07 vs '08
2008-05-25 21:57:00
Have we improved as a team since last year? It's clearly too early to tell. Every fan of every team feels they are better off after the draft, and I'm no different. But I still want to do a comparison, and see what other rabid fans think. So without further ado... QB Cutler did very well last year, breaking the top ten in most analysts opinions and in only his first full year. Now consider this: He did it with an untreated illness (losing weight the entire time), he did it with two OL on injured reserve, he did it missing his number one WR, he did it missing his top three RBs for most of the season. Not bad at all. Now his diabetes is under treatment and control, he has another year of experience, and the team starts healthy. This should be a spectacular year for Jay. Behind Jay are thesame two back-ups. Perhaps Hackney passes Ramsey in the depth chart. QB - Strong improvement RB Henry gets a new start, and he may or may not suffer from injuries again. But Young is...

The Quest: One Fan's Thoughts
2008-05-23 20:01:00
I have to admit, when Guru coined the phrase "The Quest " to christen the Bronco's 2008 season, a shiver of anticipation thrilled through me.   In so many words, I had been trying, somewhat unsuccessfully, to frame my outlook for the 2008 season.  I knew it involved great anticipation (doesn't it always?); I knew it involved the shaking of some all too mortal coil (call it character concerns, bad drafting, whatever.); I knew too that its importance tugged at my very soul, and yet its identity eluded me. Enter Guru and "The Quest," and it seemed like something had fallen into place.  But what? The Broncos have added 36 new faces to the roster and those guys need to get to know each other a bit.  For the MHR, it means time to get serious about covering the team on a day-to-day basis.  I have officially termed the 2008 season as "The Quest".  It is both direct and to the point, as well as general, enigmatic.  I have purposfully left off what "...

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Week 1 Round Up
2008-05-23 14:56:00
The first of two weeks in this year's Quarterback Camp are complete and while there isn't much to be learned from a bunch of guys in shorts and a t-shirt it sure was nice to be talking about football again. There is some news to speak of. Tony Scheffler had his foot examined and the news turned out to be better than expected. The soreness in his foot is nothing but that, but the Coach will still tread lightly this early in workouts. We know there's not another break in there. You can see that on the X-rays. But there's something in there that keeps him quite sore, and, hopefully, with a couple weeks in the boot, he'll come back full speed and we don't aggravate the injury. Nate Jackson, Scheffler's back-up, knows all too well how frustrated Scheff is with the chronic pain. "He feels like, 'What am I doing wrong for this to happen?' It's the same time as last year, the same play. But I feel for him. He's a friend of mine, and I don't like to see him dealing with th...

MHR University - The Importance of Speed
2008-05-22 23:01:00
Welcome to another edition of MHR Universtity. Some time ago, we discussed the importance of endurance. Today, let's take a look at another key element of the game. Speed is an important part of the Denver Broncos arsenal. It has been a hallmark of the defense (particularly the LBs), for years. What makes speed so special? Are there different kinds of speed? Are there misunderstandings about speed? There are certainly misunderstandings about speed, as there are about any positive human attribute. For instance, if someone is smarter than we are, we like to brag that the person lacks "common sense" or only has "book knowledge". If someone is stronger than we are, we like to think that they are "dumb jocks". If someone is faster than we are, what do we like to say? Often we say the person must be lacking in other traits. A fast person "can't be strong" or "can't have good catching hands" or "can't tackle". The truth is, none of these things have any physical correlati...

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 3 - News and Notes
2008-05-22 14:18:00
3 days are in the books and the Broncos suffered their first significant injury, though it has lingered for a year now.  Let's take a look at what(and who) went down yesterday --   Tony Scheffler will miss the next month of action due to recurring problems with his broken foot. It was during Quarterback Camp in 2007 that Scheffler initially broke the bone in his foot and played through pain all of last season. There is concern that Scheff may have actually re-fractured the foot, though the Broncos are taking a wait-and-see approach. With Scheffler out of the lineup, old friend Nate Jackson will be counted on to take his place. With Daniel Graham proving last season that his strength is blocking, not running routes, the Broncos need a down-field threat from the Tight End position. Jackson signed a 1-year/$605,000 contract in March with a $425,000 signing bonus. I have always felt an injury to one's foot, especially if you are a running back or tight end, can be extre...

MHR's Forgotten Broncos -- Rich "Tombstone" Jackson
2008-05-22 01:01:00
When Bronco fans today are asked who the most famous Bronco ever to don the #87 jersey, most would blurt out "Eddie Mac!" before giving anything more than half a thought.  The fact is, the most famous and most talented Bronco ever to wear the #87 Bronco uniform had a nickname that understated his true force on the field of play.  His nickname was "Tombstone" and yes, I said that understates his true presence on the field. We all love Eddie Mac and he was a great player for us, but he never had the NFL write a special rule just for him in order to protect the lives of other players.  That rule was written because of the exploits of Rich "Tombstone" Jackson .       The special rule I am referring to is the "Head Slap" rule, which was instituted in 1977 by the NFL in large part because of Rich Jackson and others after him, such as Deacon Jones.  His patented head slap moves, like the "halo spinner", earned Jackson a reputation as one of the to...

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 2 - News and Notes
2008-05-21 13:40:00
Day 2 of Quarterback Camp didn't have the storylines of Day 1 , but that doesn't mean there's nothing to report.  Let's take a look around to see what was seen and heard -- A big disappointment in 2007 was the defense. Jarvis Moss was disappointed as well. Not being on the field has left the Broncos' First Round pick in 2007 with something to prove -- I feel it, I've got a little chip on my shoulder. Being out, I'm ready to go play football. I'd be ready if it started tomorrow. Of course, there have been alot of additions to the defense, something Moss sees as a benefit - That's what makes the team good, the competition among each other, when training camp hits, competition will definitely pick up. That's exactly what we need, guys fighting for position and getting better every single day. The Head Coach surely sees a difference in Moss -- His conditioning is looking better, for him to come back his second year should be a positive. Usually those linemen l...

NFL Owners Opt Out Of CBA....What It Really Means
2008-05-20 19:23:00
Yes, the sky is falling, cats and dogs are living together, left is right and right is left.  The NFL Owners have done exactly what everyone thought they were going to do, voting unanimously to opt out of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.  Since the announcement there has been alot of talk, complete BS is more accurate, about what it means for the NFL now and in the immediate future.  There are several fine articles, like HERE and HERE .   What I want to do is combine the best of the best information here so we all know what it means when we hear the term "Uncapped Year" or when a work stoppage could possibly happen. Let's start by saying this.  Today's news has absolutely no effect on football in 2008 or 2009.  Even if there is no agreement reached between now and next spring there would be football in 2010.  The earliest any type of work stoppage could happen is 2011 and it would be a Lockout by the owners, not a str...
Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp - Day 1 News and Notes
2008-05-20 14:46:00
The Quest has officially begun. The players were on the field, except Travis Henry of course, and the work of turning around two seasons of simply average(16-16) football is at hand. Here's what was seen and heard on Day 1 of Quarterback Camp --   The biggest news of the day had to be the appearance of Brandon Marshall on the practice field. You can read about it HERE and HERE. Everyone seemed happy to see Marshall, a key component to the Broncos' success in 2008 -- Mike Shanahan was a bit surprised - "He's doing everything a receiver would do except catch the ball. It's ahead of what I thought initially, I was told he could not work out until a month before we went to training camp. And we still thought we could get him in shape, ready to go for our first practice. As for when Marshall might be able to catch a ball again, and his availability for Training Camp, Shanny had this to say -- June 22 with will be the first day he'll be able to catch the football, so tha...

A Letter To Broncos Fans From Andrew Mason
2008-05-20 12:36:00
The below letter was written by former Broncos Blogger Andrew Mason .  Mason was the Sr. Editor at DenverBroncos.com for several years until recently being let go.  Mason, a fan of the site, asked if he could thank all of you directly for your support over the years and especially when news of his "release" was reported.  As you'll see below, Andrew has landed on his feet. In the comments I read on message boards, my former blog, e-mail and other venues, many of you wanted to know where I would end up.  I didn't want to say much until I had something to report -- which is now the case. But please forgive me for detouring before getting to the point of this piece. With the Broncos opening their quarterback camp on Monday morning, I found myself taking a few minutes to click around and see how the first day of OTAs was being covered.  After all, it seems like only yesterday that I was blogging about Broncos offseason practices, and just a couple of hours ago ...

Quarterback Camp Marks The Beginning Of "The Quest'
2008-05-19 18:36:00
Quarterback Camp .  Those words won't spark much of a reaction from mainstream fans, but for us Broncos-Fanatics, any term used to describe on-feild activites is reason to get excited.  For the players, it's time to get down to the business of coming together as a football team.  The Broncos have added 36 new faces to the roster and those guys need to get to know each other a bit.  For the MHR, it means time to get serious about covering the team on a day-to-day basis.  I have officially termed the 2008 season as "The Quest ".  It is both direct and to the point, as well as general, enigmatic.  I have purposfully left off what "The Quest" is for.  I leave that to you.  It is far beyond me to tell you what your expectations for 2008 should be.  I have my own, and for me "The Quest" to reach those expectations starts today.  Just like "The Reloading" season before it, 2008 now has a moniker.  Use it with pride! As with any Qu...

Broncos Sign G Dylan Gandy, Release Isaac Snell

The Denver Broncos on Friday signed free-agent guard Dylan Gandy, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Broncos also on Friday waived guard Isaac Snell .Gandy (6-foot-3, 302 pounds) is a fourth-year player who spent his first three professional seasons with Indianapolis. Selected by the Colts in the fourth round (129th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft from Texas Tech University, Gandy has played 42 career games with 14 starts in the regular season. The 26-year-old also has appeared in six career playoff games (1 start), including the Colts’ victory in Super Bowl XLI during the 2006 season. In 2007, Gandy saw time in 10 games for Indianapolis and recorded one start at right guard. He appeared in all 16 regular-season games, starting a career-high 11 contests at left guard, for the Colts’ Super Bowl XLI-champion team in 2006 that allowed an NFL-low 15 sacks and averaged an AFC-best 379.4 yards per game.He played 16 game...

MHR Broncos History Lesson -- firstfan Interview
2008-05-17 00:46:00
I sent out an email to one of our more decorated Broncomaniacs here at Mile High Report in the hopes of capturing some of the emotion and intrigue of our earlier years in the league. We are fortunate to have members here like firstfan, TrinidadJack, Broncos fanstuckinsd, and others who are able to give us youngsters a glimpse into the past.  A glimpse of what it was like to be a Bronco fan when the team struggled to win more than four games in a season.   A glimpse of the pride and love the fans had for this team. This is my first real interview of someone since the ninth grade, so be kind!         When did Broncomania really start to take hold? What was it like? I think the first real out picturing of Broncomania was in ’65 when season ticket sales went from under eight thousand to over twenty three thousand just to support Gerald Phipps for saving the franchise. Broncomania was displayed in many different ways. Several people painted...

MHR Scouting Services -- Getting Set Up
2008-05-16 01:00:00
Well, it looks like you guys are ready to go.  You've got an area set up that is suitable to your scouting work, and you have lined out many of the supplies that you will need to have on hand.  Don't worry if you haven't thought of everything...  because you haven't, but you are going to have plenty of time to get the process fleshed out, and what you do have in place is bound to save time and make the whole process a lot more enjoyable.  And if the rest of the membership are like me, they can't wait to see the kind of work you are going to do. So at this point I would like to take a look at some very basic guidelines for setting up your scouting 'system.'  There is no right way, only better ways and worse ways, and if at any time you see a method that can be improved on, feel free to outline it in the comments. If you're ready, I'll meet you below the fold, and I hope you have been playing around with your database software, because th...

MHR's Forgotten Broncos -- Marlin Briscoe
2008-05-15 01:00:00
There has been much discussion in recent years about the ability of an African American to quarterback in the NFL.  Prior to the new millennium, the Warren Moon’s and Randall Cunningham’s of the world were more exceptions to the rule rather than a rewriting of the rule.  It wasn’t until the late 90’s and into our current time that African American quarterbacks finally began to be taken seriously by NFL teams, scouts, coaches, the media, and everyone else in America.  There is no longer any debate that African Americans are every bit as able to command and lead at the quarterback position, nor is there any debate that a person is unable to grasp complex schemes and systems based on their race.       The road to total equality in the NFL was a long one, with many sad stories along the way(Google Eldridge Dickey and Joe Gilliam).  We all know that the first major breakthrough for African American quarterbacks came aga...

A Few Good Questions With....DT Carlton Powell
2008-05-14 13:13:00
Defensive Tackle was a position of need heading into the 2008 NFL Draft for the Broncos.  Just days before Draft Weekend, the Broncos secured DeWayne Robertson from the New York Jets, but still felt the need to inject some youth to the position by selecting DT Carlton Powell from Virginia Tech. via media3.washingtonpost.com Recently, Carlton was nice enough to answer some questions from members of MileHighrReport.com.  We thank Carlton again for taking the time to help us get to know him, and thanks to everyone who posted questions here at the site -- MHR -- How surprised were you that the Broncos were the team that drafted you?  CP -- On a Scale from 1-10 I would say an 8.MHR -- Was there any contact between you and the Broncos prior to the draft?CP -- The only time was at the Combine when I talked to Coach Johnson in the war room.MHR -- Many fans at milehighreport.com share the belief that the DT position was the major defensive weakness in '07.  Co...

Welcome to another edition of MHR Tech Tips ! In the third installment of the series, we will learn how to make your post look good by learning how to put pictures in your posts! Note how I have a picture at the top of my article. I'm not an artist. MHR staff member Sirsam (our resident artistic/graphics professional) designed it. But how did I get it on my post? How do I get pictures of players or illustrations of football formations on a post? It's not a secret. I'm a computer illiterate, and I can do it. I'm going to help you be able to do it to. If you get stuck, or have problems, this is the place to experiment and ask questions. All of the members here are glad to help anyone who wants it. Let's get started! Jim Goodman Talks About the Draft
2008-05-13 20:00:00
This is a transcript of Jim Goodman's conversation about the draft from this fanshot put up by JonT .  I've taken some liberties with some paraphrasing here and there, but the heart of what he was talking about is there.  I thought this would be useful for any members who aren't able to watch videos on their CPUs, or who haven't had time to watch the whole video (its over 40 minutes long.)  Enjoy! Jim Goodman Director of Player Personnel About getting ready for the draft: The process takes 12 months, we start in May, when the National Scouting Service that we are a member of, gives us approximately 1000 names.  We go over thsoe names and give grades to them and distribute the names to our seven area scouts, and all of those guys have to get scouted, and reports have to be written on every one of those guys, plus any guys that  start to come out in their senior year.  So you'll end up doing anywhere from 1200 to 1400 reports a year, in order to get...

NFL Owners, Players Begin 'Fact Finding' Mission Regarding CBA
2008-05-13 14:21:00
Quietly, somewhat too quietly, the NFLPA and Owners sat down last week to begin looking at a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.  In NFLPA Chief Gene Upshaw's weekly 100 Wordson the NFLPA website, the embattled Union Head had this to say about the proceedings -- We met with NFL negotiators last Thursday in New York. Attendees included owners Jerry Richardson and Pat Bowlen, the League’s financial team and its new outside attorney, Bob Batterman. The NFL discussed the 32 teams’ financial condition and how the CBA has caused every club to lose money. They are attempting to gather financial information to share with the NFLPA. We made it clear that we are willing to discuss their financial condition, but we cannot expect our players to embrace the NFL’s position without the owners providing audited financial statements. This is just the first step in the process. As many of you know, Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen is an imporant part of this process, being the Leag...

MHR University - The Nickle Formations
2008-05-12 23:30:00
I had planned on doing a youth coaching article, but there has been some interest expressed on the site and in my e-mail about the 3-3-5. Let's expand on that a little, and talk about nickle formations (including the 3-3-5) in several contexts (history, reasoning, personnel, etc). As a Broncos centric site, most of the readers should get some use out of this article, since Denver uses both the 3-3-5 (sometimes mistakenly called a 33 stack), and the strong nickle. Denver has nice depth at the DB positions to be flexible with the nickle. You there, in the back row! Put down that Madden cheat sheet! That isn't "Cliff's Notes" you know! MHR Scouting Services -- Getting Organized
2008-05-12 01:30:00
Something with great potential is coming together here at MHR, and I am very excited to be able to introduce a few tidbits of information over the coming weeks to help out. I am talking, of course, of MHR Scouting Services , founded by Jon Tollerud, and the information I would like to share will be a little of what I have learned from watching college players in order to assess their NFL capabilities.  A lot of it will be very basic, and old hat to many of you, but I am hoping it will still be useful to members who are new to the idea of scouting, and perhaps those of you who already have a good eye for assessing the talented players will be able to pull an interesting point or two from the articles. Getting Started Means Getting Organized These first few posts won't really be about scouting per se, but about the organization that will make you a better scout.  I maintain a list of almost 1000 players (at any given time), and the key to getting any use out of...
The Mayonnaise Jar and Two Beers.
2008-05-11 01:26:00
When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 Beers .   Hoosierteacher stood before the crowded lecture hall at MHR University. Styg, Guru, Zappa, mdierk( the A students) were all in the front row, eager to learn. Firstfan was in the back with his dunce cap on. All of the students were there. Super7 and Jon Tollerud were hoping for an in-depth discussion of the now famous 3-3-5 defense. But instead Hoosierteacher had some unusual items in front of him.   When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large, empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. Hoosierteacher then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full . They agreed it was.  ...
Al Davis Likes Shiny Things
2008-05-11 00:12:00
The Pro-Football-Reference Blog  has a short post on Al Davis and his infatuation with 1st round picks.  My favorite part of the article shows that of the two teams on which he had 22 former 1st-rounders, both were 4-12.  It's amazing to see how a team can stockpile so many 'talented' players, yet be so poor.  We can only hope the Darren McFadden pick continues the trend. Enjoy the read!

MHR's Forgotten Broncos -- Lionel Taylor
2008-05-09 14:05:00
Not all Bronco's are completely forgotten, but there are times when  the younger generation of fans need to remember the greats of the Bronco past.  When the Denver Broncos formed in 1960 along with the AFL, they team was filled with no names and castaways.  One of those men was a castaway from the Chicago Bears.  Lionel Taylor went to the Bears in his rookie season after a stellar career at unknown New Mexico Highlands University.  Taylor spent eight games with the Bears, mostly on the bench, logging zero pass catches and was released.           As with most NFL rejects, Lionel Taylor found himself looking for work in the AFL. He walked on to try out for the Denver Broncos and after several one handed grabs in practice he quickly worked himself into the starting line up. Not known for his blazing speed, Taylor may have had the best hands in the entire AFL. He quickly became the Broncos only super star in the early 6...
