MHR University - Modern 3-4 Defense Systems
2008-05-08 00:08:00 Welcome to another edition of MHR University ! Today we'll look at the modern systems run in the 3-4 defense. We'll also clear up some common misperceptions about the formation, as well as look at the strengths and weaknesses of each sytem, and prefered player types. Over the next couple of days I will be moving archived University posts into the MHR University section. This means that if you want to look up older editions, you need only go to the left panel on the main page and click "MHR University". Read the rest of the story below the fold... What is the 3-4? In the 3-4, there are three defensive linemen on the field (DLs). We call the centermost DL a nose tackle (NT) and the other two defensive ends (DEs). We also have 4 linebackers (LBs). The centermost 2 are called inside linebackers (ILBs) and the outer two are called outside linebackers (OLBs). In the 4-3 we call the LBs nicknames... More About: Defense , Systems , Modern

MHR Broncos History Lesson - 7th Ed. -- Broncomania
2008-05-03 14:00:00 I am of the biased opinion that there isn't a greater fan on this Earth than those who don the Orange & Blue of the Denver Broncos . The great thing about Broncomania is that it means something different to each and every fan. To me it’s the fanatism I have in defense of all things Bronco. I grew up being ridiculed and picked on for being a Bronco fan when every other Tom, Dick, or Harry person in my class were either 49er fans or Raider fans. I took my licks with pride and wore more orange than I probably ever should have. I mean I had Bronco hats, jackets, jerseys, shirts, sweaters, sweatpants, shoes, socks, and even underwear! I had to make sure I wore something from my team every single day. For me, every day was Orange Sunday. That experience doesn’t make me more of a Bronco fan than anyone else, it just changes my mentality a bit. For example, I look forward to talking smack to Raider fans more so than others, because I... More About: History , Lesson
Is Darrell Jackson better than Javon Walker?
2008-05-02 18:36:00 Who would you rather have? **Warning: This article contains opinions** In the grand scheme of things: no, Darrell Jackson is not better than Javon Walker . But, as of right now, Darrell Jackson is a better buy and a smaller risk for nearly the exact same production in extremely similar offenses. I wanted to put our old #2 WR up against what looks to be our new #2 WR. To do so, I'll run through some numbers and discuss where these players are and have been in their careers. The goal here is in hoping to find some proof that that Denver shouldn't have a dropoff in WR production. The general perception that the Denver Broncos had about a Javon Walker was that it "seemed" like he wanted out and (Walker) didn't think that he was a fit any longer. It's no wonder why. Well, there's the constant (and potential) knee problems. There were the r...

Jay Cutler has type 1 diabetes
2008-05-02 05:25:00 Below is the Jay Cutler article from 7 news . ****************************** Life as Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler once knew it has changed. Cutler was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, a Broncos source confirmed. While this is the most serious type of diabetes, making Cutler insulin dependent, the Broncos are confident it will not negatively impact his career performance. Cutler, who could not be reached for comment, has been taking insulin shots since he was diagnosed and has been participating in the Broncos' offseason workout program. Several athletes have enjoyed long professional careers while playing with Type 1 diabetes, including former big-league baseball stars Ron Santo and Jackie Robinson and hockey's Bobby Clarke. Among the former NFL players who played despite Type 1 diabetes were center Jay Leeuwenburg, who starred at the University of Colorado, quarterback Wade Wilson, and defensive back Mike Echols. Football University - Cover Two Systems
2008-05-02 02:36:00 A lot of folks know about the popular Cover Two system. At the same time, there is a lot of misunderstanding about this system. Some common myths: Cover Two is a formation. Cover Two and Tampa Two are the same thing. Cover Three is a system. Two deep safeties is what a Cover Two is primarily known for. The Cover Two is a 4-3 system. Let's take a deeper look at the Cover Two and it's major variant, the Tampa Two. Knowing how these defenses are set up is key to game planning and game prep for the upcoming season. See you below the fold! The C2 is not a new system. It has been around for decades. In its inception, the C2 was a zone system that was a balanced defense against the run and pass. The idea behind the C2 was to place the LBs in zones that divided the 2nd level of the field. The LBs could be of any type (fast/coverage or slow/big), but the OLBs were normaly faster than their MLB counterparts. The MLB played close to scrimmage, while the OLBs could vary... MHR's Forgotten Broncos -- Floyd Little
2008-05-01 15:00:00 Welcome to the newest segement of Broncos History. A special thank you to TrinidadJack for coming up with the name of Forgotten Broncos. I decided the best way to kick off a topic like this was to feature an article written by someone who lived through the experience. Floyd Little was thee Franchise while John Elway was making the difficult transition from running back to quarterback in pop warner. I understand many of you would take offense to Floyd Little being considered a Forgotten Bronco, but the point of this series to keep the memories of these past Broncos alive and well in the Bronco consciousness. Simple stats or awards does not do justice to what Floyd Little meant to the fans and the city of Denver, so I hope you enjoy this article written by firstfan as much as I did. Floyd Little by firstfan Let’s begin this story of Floyd Little and the Denver Broncos in 1965. For in that year the mos...
AFC Draft In Review
2008-05-01 07:20:00 Baltimore Ravens Picks: QB Joe Flacco(1), RB Ray Rice(2), ILB Tavares Gooden(3), S Tom Zbikowski(3), OG Oniel Cousins(3), WR Marcus Smith(4), OT David Hale(4), S Haruki Nakamura(6), WR Justin Harper(7), RB Allen Patrick(7) Best Pick: QB Joe Flacco Analysis: B: Some may question whether or not the Ravens paniced a bit when the Falcons sleected Matt Ryan #3. The move down with Jacksonville was a shred one for Ozzie Newsome, but to give most of it away to get back in the Top-20 for Flacco had some scratching their heads. It is obvious the Ravens had Flacco graded significantly higher than Brian Brohm and Chad Henne. Flacco does possess the best "NFL-Arm" in the draft, but time will tell whether or not playing at Delaware prepared him for the rigors of the AFC North. The Ravens also took advantage of having 7 total picks in the Top 4 rounds, with Rice, Gooden and Zbikowski set to play significant roles as early as 2008. For a team desparate for a shot in th... The Character of our Football Team
2008-04-30 21:35:00 It’s really shocking to me how irrelevant the Broncos currently seem to the national media. Their draft picks got almost no discussion this past weekend, and they’re getting graded consistently at a C level for their rookie class. For the most part, the graders are fools who don’t know what they’re talking about, but it still speaks to this ho-hum feeling around the team. I saw two 2009 mock drafts (by Andrew Perloff of SI and Todd McShay of ESPN) which project the Broncos to be picking in the low teens again next year. We’re irrelevant, and we have no chance for improvement. Viva la Broncos fanhood! National football writers tend to know football to the same extent that Target sells books. Target has all of the bestsellers, and some romance novels to boot, but not much else, because they’re only concerned with stocking the inventory which a broad section of its customer base wants to buy.&n... A Royal Suprise
2008-04-30 02:09:00 The NFL Draft has always been a holiday for me. I can't remember a time in the past 5 years that I haven't at least watched the first round. (The last two years I've watched the entire day one which was previously 3 rounds.) I was hoping to attempt to watch the entire thing "buzzer to buzzer" for the first time this year until I realized a scheduling conflict would mean I was at the bottom of the Grand Canyon on the day of the draft. I would have backed out but I had already paid the money and was already 5 weeks into my "training hikes". I like to think a little part of me died that day. But this isn't meant to be a emotional rollercoaster so let me get to the point. At the bottom of the Canyon there is a payphone which I used to call my family to get all the updates. I called around 4:00 pacific time to get the update for the first round. I was very pleased to hear that our blueprint for world domination had gone so far as planned. We got our franchise LT just like... More About: Royal
2008 NFL Draft - Quick Thoughts
2008-04-29 03:06:00 Random thoughts from the weekend. I watched almost the entire draft. It's harder to watch the draft buzzer to buzzer than it is not to. I really liked the 10 minute clock switch this year. More than in years past, I felt like I had an idea when a team was scrambling to make a trade, come to a consensus on one guy, or when they knew exactly who they wanted. On that note, Denver got their man at pick 12. You had to feel good that Denver was able to pick their top guy of everyone that they could have hoped would be available. Clady, Williams, Albert, Stewart, and Mendenhall were all available at 12. Denver did their homework on this pick, and they seemed to pick fairly quickly, which tells me that they had no second thoughts about Ryan Clady. Anytime Coach Shanahan tells the media he's starting a rookie offensive lineman the same day he drafted him and guaranteed him $11 Million dollars, it's obvious that this is the most confident... 2008 NFL Draft -- Denver Signs 6(7?) CFAs
2008-04-28 08:51:00 A quick introduction to some of the newest Broncos! Anthony Alridge (WR - Houston) RB/WR Don't tell Anthony that he is a dreaded 'tweener. Reportedly responded to not being drafted by swearing vengeance on every team in the league, except for the Broncos of course, who nabbed him right up. Alridge is an electrifying player, a north south one-cut runner with a massive chip on his shoulder and experience at multiple positions. Should compete at KR/PR, but needs to bulk up a little to really push either of our current "change-up" specialists K Garrett Hartley (Oklahoma) Denver is taking a flyer that Hartley will show the consistency and range he had his first three years, before inexplicably losing both his accuracy and some of his power. Hits into the endzone at about a 33% rate, and is(was) exceptionally accurate inside of 50 yds. Has enough power to hit longer ones and has gotten better about getting lift into his... NFL Draft 2008 - Broncos Reloading Thoughts
2008-04-28 08:46:00 Go easy on me, this is my first diary on MHR :) First, a change in philosophy:When we won back to back Championships, we had a lot of high character guys - Rod & Easy Ed, Elway, Davis, Neil Smith, just about the entire offensive line, Steve Atwater, and, for all of his talking, Shannon Sharpe. For most of the post Superbowl Mike Shanahan era, it seems that as long as someone could play technically sound football, they had a place on our team. Character traits were overlooked for numbers (Dale Carter, Daryl Gardener, Travis Henry – though he seems to be making a good effort to turn it around). Guys with attitude problems were welcomed if they could put up the stats (Javon). Sure, we'd like the guys who were leaders and had high character, and we'd have them on the team, but it wasn't a priority compared to their play. As those guys left, we didn't replace them with enough outspoken high character players. We weren't prepared for the leadership vacuum last year w... More About: Thoughts , Draft , Broncos , 2008
2008 NFL Draft -- Denver Selects FB, Peyton Hillis
2008-04-28 07:15:00 The final pick in a nine pick draft. KC will get a lot of credit for getting a lot of solid picks in this draft, but what else is to be expected of six picks on day one? Whe it comes right down to it, this pick for Denver is the "Mike Shanahan Approved" stamp that packages up this draft neatly and sends it off to training camp. Shanny wants nothing more than to score TDs. He knows he has the most important ingredient for success, a young QB with limitless talent and a drive to be the best. At this point it is all about building around Cutler. From LT to insurance on Henry to arguably the best center in the draft to a dynamic player who can single-handedly improve the Broncos starting field position by leaps and bounds, the Broncos are closer right now to scoring in the red zone than they were in over 25 trips insde the 20 last year. FB is a bit of a misnomer as recent new member hooper recently pointed out: Part of Hillis's job will be to protect Cutler. Hi... More About: Draft , 2008
2008 NFL Draft -- Denver Selects SS, Josh Barrett
2008-04-28 06:51:00 I'm not much for giving grades, but I would say that so far the draft has stacked up in the A-B range. But this pick is the first that I really want to like but just can't get too enthusiastic about. Its a shame too, because like HT I really like the safety position and would love to see Denver take it very seriously. First off, this is the second pick that seems more suitable to a cover-2 type of defense. I suppose if Denver feels like the Jack Williams pick and this pick can outlive Champ and Bly's stay in Denver that they migh find more value instituting a cover-2 scheme. But this is a question for HT to address. I would just like to look at some of the things I like about Barrett and some of the things that bother me. I like that he is a safety that can play well in the box, since I'm with Shanny that you need one safety up to stop the run (especailly with our great man corners) and that will free you up to back him off later and get after the QB once... 2008 Draft - "Upon Further Review in the Booth..."
2008-04-28 04:15:00 A companion to the in depth review of players taken in the 2008 draft that have been written by Styg50... There comes a time during a good Broncos game when a play goes horribly wrong. We all groan, kick the dog, throw a brick at the tv, or go out and drink our Zappa Juice. And then (like Death and Dying author Dr. Kubler-Ross says) we hit the next stage of grief and get depressed. BUT WAIT! Coach Shanahan throws the red flag onto the field, and thousands of eyes shoot up to the replay screen in the sky! "All, all forsook the friendless guilty mind. All... but HOPE. HOPE lingered yet behind!" We've gone through a draft with our eyes on the ball, many have felt kicked in the gut, but I'm about to make the argument that upon further review the Denver War Room had their eyes on the entire field and saw some things we missed. I'm throwing out the red flag, and asking for us to consider the following facts. For starters, we have to get out of the woods to see the forest. Th... More About: Review , Draft
2008 NFL Draft -- Denver Selects ILB, Spencer Larsen
2008-04-28 01:51:00 The first thing I did when I got ready to do this write-up on Larsen , was to go backand read everything I had on Wake Forest C, Steve Justice. Say what? I did that because I like the Larsen pick. He is a great ST addition who will be an immediate upgrade over many of our veteran journeymen who currently under-occupy the positions, and unlike them, he will have something to prove. Plus, I like the idea that we can challenge K2 without making a huge vote of "no confidence" in him, as a Lofton pick may have done. We are paying him after all. My reasoning for looking at Justice, is that of all the players still on the board who stood to be gone by the time denver selected again, he was the one who I had always assumed would be a solid choice for Denver . The question wasn't whether he should have been selected instead of Larsen, but whether we should have passed on K-Lic (if you guys want me to stop using this nick for him, you better suggest something fast,... 2008 NFL Draft -- Denver Selects DT, Carlton Powell
2008-04-28 00:52:00 Regardless of how you rank our offseason needs, there is no doubt we had three critical issues to this teams success: Score TDs in the redzone Stop the run Improve STs As I peruse our 2008 draft class, I see just how deeply complex football is, as on the surface we seem to putting a lot of effort into #3 above, when I would probably rate it as a distant second to #2. But that is where the complexity lies. By addressing 3 you indirectly optimize 1 which in turn has an effect on 2 which improves 3 which... I think you get the point. And not to be overlooked in the drafting or non-drafting of a DT is the fundamentally flawed stature of this years DT class. Outside of Ellis and Dorsey (who I wil leave out of the discussion from here on out) there simply wasn't anyone that I felt the Bronco's absolutely must get. I have looked at more DTs this year than in any year of the draft, and I have extensie notes on 27 (!!!) DTs alone, making up almost a fif... More About: Draft , Denver , Powell
2008 NFL Draft -- Denver Selects RB Ryan Torain
2008-04-28 00:11:00 Denver's most recent late round RB selection seems to be getting a bit of a cold shoulder from the faithful. For shame. If you have learned anyhting about these Denver Broncos it is that they don't mess up the RB picks. I could very easily file this one away under success without pulling out my notes to corroborate what they are doing here, but I enjoy checking up on the Broncos, so it is my pleasure to introduce you to the newest 1000 yd rusher for the Broncos. But first, let's get something out of the way. We all get a little too caught up in "this guy should go here" and "that guy should go there". Here is a mental exercise: take all of the currently active NFL players and throw them in a pot and then draw lots and draft to build a team (not a fantasy team here, guys. An actual team.) There will be a top fifty or so (around 3 rds) that everyone will be vying for. But after that, the players you want will differ drastically from the pla... More About: Draft , Denver , Ryan , 2008

2008 NFL Draft -- Denver Selects CB Jack Williams
2008-04-27 23:18:00 You don't know Jack . And it is fairly debatable about whether you want to or not. First, let's get the obvious out of the way. The guy is too small. At 5' 9" (generously) he comes to a team that won't draft elite safety help if their lives depended on it, and is guaranteed to be mismatched 9 times out of 10 in one on one coverages. I love D-Will, but I remember him being burned a lot in one on one scenarios against precise passers. He was at his best when the opposing QB was screwing up, where his tenaciousness made teams pay for their mistakes. Which is something you see in J-Will as well. Tenaciousness. Fire. Competitiveness. You WILL see him in the mix at KR/PR. You WILL see him fly down the field with some of the best timed speed in the draft. You WILL see his willingness to work and his great team attitude. You WILL see a combination of strength and speed that is rare in a CB. And you WILL see a p... More About: Draft , Williams , Denver , 2008
2008 NFL Draft -- Broncos Select C, Korey Lichtensteiger
More articles from this author:2008-04-27 22:49:00 I didn't see this coming but I definitely love this pick. This is another nasty Olineman with good instincts and versatility, and what really excites me is what he can bring to Denver's running game down the line: as a guard he had 184 knockdowns, 27 resulting in TDs. That's what I'm talking about. When you factor in his effortless move to center, where he graded the highest among NCAA centers for his blocking (92 knockdowns in first year, 10 for TDs), you can understand why he was the highest ranked center going into 2007, but that leads you to ask: Why didn't he stay at the top? He began 2007 by recording 96 knockdowns, and 16 were for TDs, and he did this through only nine games. He also added 6 other knockdowns that resulted in big plays (over 25 yards) and gave up only 1 sack through that time period. But unbeknownst to him he was playing through pain that would ultimately prove to be a torn labrum, which was repaired via arthroscopic surgery,...
