2008 Draft--Day 2 Primer
2008-04-27 14:00:00
I'll just keep this short and sweet.  Going into the fourth round, Denver should see the last of the starter quality players coming off the board at the very deep classes of LB and RB.  Dollars to doughnuts says they target either or both of these positions with their picks in the fourth round, in what is becoming a very solid and sound draft, predicated on maximizing the value of the pick. LB Jonathan Goff, Vanderbilt :  Smart, solid player.  Fundamentally sound, if not terribly exciting. Ali Highsmith, LSU:  Projects as a SAM but has a great ability to keep himself clean and is very vocal and smart.  Plays with a lot of heart and would be a great ST addition while he learns what kind of guy Al Wilson was...whoops.  I swore to myself that I wouldn't mention Wilson. RB Tashard Choice, Georgia Tech:  The tough part is looking for backs who are upgrades over Selvin and Hall in someway.  Tashard secures the ball well and is a good north-so...

MHR Football University - 2008 Draft Day 1 Review
2008-04-27 08:03:00
The speculation is over, and the first day is done. No moves were made up or down as Denver felt comfortable picking at their given slots. From a fan perspective this may have been a let down day. After returning home from a day of work I read the comments (all several hundred of them) and saw a lot of dissapointment. No movement up or down, and no flashy picks (we get an offensive lineman and a WR that wasn't on our radar screens). From a coaching perspective, I think we did what made sense with our 1st round pick, and as I do more research I believe we got ourselves a steal in the 2nd. Do you need to be cheered up? Read on my friends. Life is good, and the 2nd day is only going to get better! Read more below the fold... ~~~~~~~~~~ Just how good is Clady? Look, offensive tackle is never a "sexy" pick. We all know that. But there is a possibility that Clady is not only a good OT, but a great one. As I've written elsewhere, I don't like TSN for their game pr...

2008 NFL Draft - Grade The Broncos Two First Picks
2008-04-27 05:45:00
Before the draft I expressed my deisre for the Broncos to trade down.  I kept hope alive all the way until Roger Goodell said Ryan Clady's name.  It isn't that don't like Clady.  Just the opposite.  On MHR Radio the other night, I called Clady the safest pick for the Broncos if he was there, and by the sounds of Mike Shahahan he thought the same thing. There were plenty of trades, which speaks to the sheer fluidity of this draft.  That doesn't mean it is easy to get a deal done.  It was becoming clear with all the movement around the Broncos that they weren't going to be able to get something done.  At that point the Broncos had no choice but to punt and take the best fit. Clady gives the Broncos something on the O-Line they haven't had in a long time.  Natural, God-given talent.  The Broncos have gotten so much out of guys drafted in the late round, so much over-achievement, that at some point you need to add real talent to the equ...

2008 NFL Draft - Denver Selects WR, Eddie Royal
2008-04-27 03:39:00
This pick is primarily about one thing, and that is CHARACTER. And even though Royal 's skillset will probably make him a good choice to replace Stokely eventually in the slot, I will go out on a limb here and say that Royal could really be in line to replace a much different kind of receiver, with a much different style of play, but similar results:  Rod Smith. You see, Royal gets it, and what the Denver staff must have seen from him is the same kind of maturity that they have seen in guys like Smith, and Foxworth.  More than anything, Denver just wants to get some players on this team that they can DEPEND on, and nothing is a better indicator of that than character. As far as his style on the field, slot routes are ideal for Royal, and any kind of route that lets him look for the soft spot between the defenders.  While he does have a tendency to round off his routes, he shows the quickness in and out of breaks, and he doesn't telegraph his motions, which are m...

2008 NFL Draft - Broncos WR Eddie Royal Conference Call
2008-04-27 02:48:00
On knowing the Broncos were interested in him “I had an idea. I spoke with them at the Senior Bowl, but I was totally shocked when I was picked. I got the call from [Head] Coach [Mike] Shanahan, and I wasn’t expecting it at all.”   On his ability to return kicks “I definitely feel like I can come in and be that guy. I can come in and make plays on special teams and be a guy that teams are scared to kick the ball to. I definitely look forward to doing that and making an impact right away.”   On if he prefers returning punts or kickoffs “It doesn’t matter. I feel comfortable doing both. I have had more success on punt returns, but I love doing them both. If it involves catching the ball and making plays for my team, I’ll do it.”   On making an immediate impact with the Broncos “I’m hoping they need me a lot because I want to come in right away and play. At the opening game, I look to be the starter back t...

2008 NFL Draft, Broncos OT Ryan Clady Conference Call
2008-04-27 00:45:00
On whether he expected the Broncos to select him “Yeah, I knew the Broncos were interested in picking me up. I thought there was a good chance, and I wasn’t all that surprised when they called.”   On his expectations as a rookie “Right away, I just want to learn the system. I want to play well and I want to be a starter. Everyone wants to be a Pro-Bowler and to win a couple Super Bowls.”   On being taken by the Broncos in the first round of the draft “I came in and I visited. Being drafted in the first round is a terrific thing, and I should be able to make an immediate impact right away.”   On the Broncos’ blocking system being similar to what he played in at Boise State “I think it will help me a lot. It is the same type of system and I have been in the system for four years, and I have gotten to know it well. I am on the fast track for learning and getting on the field a little faster because I know the system.&...

The 2008 NFL Draft Day Open Thread -- 2nd Round
2008-04-27 00:42:00
Time for the 2nd Round .  What will the Broncos do at #42?? #32 Miami Dolphins -- DE Phillip Merling, Clemson  Concerns about Merling's recovery from a sports hernia surgery dropped the talented ACC pass rusher out of the first round. With the first pick of the second round, however, the Dolphins added a big, physical defensive lineman that projects nicely outside to end in the 3-4 alignment. #33 St Louis Rams -- WR Donnie Avery, Houston  Someone could have made a lot of money in betting that Donnie Avery would end up being the first receiver taken in the 2008 draft. Avery lacks the big name of some of the other highly rated receivers, but his stock has been skyrocketing in recent weeks and he fills a clear need as a slot receiver and returner for the Rams. #34 Washington Redskins -- WR Devin Thomas, Michigan State  Once Jim Zorn was hired as the new head coach of the Washington Redskins, it was clear that the club would be adding taller receivers soon. The Redsk...

Two-Thirds of the way through the draft.  Is it me, or are we flying through the First Round ???   #21 Atlanta Falcons -- OT Sam Baker -- Another trade, another surprise.  I felt that Baker would be available early in the 2nd round, but it's obvious the Falcons didn't agree.  The Falcons need help on the O-line if new quarterback Matt Ryan is to stay alive. #22 Dallas Cowboys -- RB Felix Jones -- Jerah Jones went to Arkansas, Felix Jones went to Arkansas.  How cute is that.  Seriously, Jones provides a worthy replacement to Julius Jones and much needed insurance for Marion Barber III. #23 Pittsburgh Steelers -- RB Rashard Mendenhall -- What a pick for the Steelers.  Great value for Mendehhall, who slips all the way to 23.  With Willie Parker already there Mendenhall won't have to come right in and perform.  A perfect situation for him and the Steelers. #24 Tennessee Titans - RB Chris Johnson -- That is a shock. an absolute shock.&nbs...

Denver Broncos select Ryan Clady, OT
2008-04-26 23:03:00
Clady is used to uphill battles. Whether he faces more of a battle trying to win over a town desperate for playmakers in the draft, or in trying to secure a starting spot agains incumbent Tackles Ryan Harris and Erik Pears, remains to be seen. But Denver fans should know, that Oline picks don't come any more exciting than this. Clady has to be the most athletically gifted offensive lineman to come out of the draft in the past 5 years.  Want to talk about ceilings?  For Clady there is no ceiling:  the sky is the limit.  Much ado can be made about his football smarts, but one only has to see the series of games he strung together towards the end of 2007 to know that he CAN dominate:  over the course of three games he allowed 0 stats of any kind to opposing lineman.  You see, he doesn't take kindly to being told he can't get it done. Clady brings an impressive football resume from Boise, including being a fulltime starter in a zoneblock system, 122 knoc...

The 2008 NFL Draft Day Open Thread -- 1st Round(11-20)
2008-04-26 22:16:00
Welcome Back!  The Broncos are only 1 pick away and every one of the OL's are still on the board.  TRADE DOWN!!!   Buffalo Bills -- CB Leodis McKelvin -- The Bills undoubtedly tried to move down.  Reaching for a WR here would have been a huge reach so the Bills made the wise move taking the best DB on the board.  Remember, the Bills play against Tom Brady twice a year.  Nice move for the Bills. ON THE CLOCK -- THE DENVER BRONCOS!   Denver Broncos -- OT Ryan Clady -- I guess we had to know this pick was coming when all these linemen fell.  Clady and the Broncos have been connected at the hip during this entire process.  I said on MHR Radio that O-Line would be the safe pick.  It turned out that the Broncos decided to stay safe.  Styg50 will have his thoughts ASAP.

Day #1 Draft Prep
2008-04-26 03:43:00
Trades, Players and Positions This is my final statement about the Bronco's first round, and what I hope will be a solid primer for everyone here.  I will post a Day #2 draft prep saturday night.  Enjoy! Trades Denver will not trade up.  Part of me wants to say that you rarely get a chance to pick this high, and that it may be a while before we are this close to top ten talent again, but this is a very weak top ten in my eyes, and no one is worth trading up for, regardless of need.  Shanahan will listen to offers, sure, and both KC and the faders may want to trade down, but KC doesn't want to go to far and the faders can just rot right where they are.  Denver will trade down, but only under one condition.... The condition that will prompt Denver to trade down is whether or not OT Clady or OG/OT Albert is available at #12, but hang on one sec...cause its probably not what you think.  Denver will trade down only if they are available.  The i...

SI's Mike Lombardi: Time For Broncos To Beef Up O-Line
2008-04-25 21:47:00
Mike Lombardi's SI Article Mike Lombardi is a longtime NFL personnel man who most recently worked for the Broncos for about a year.  I'm not sure what the circumstances surrounding his departure were, but he now writes for SI.com, and he's got a surprisingly nice writing style for a football man.  Imagine Shannon Sharpe as a graduate of Syracuse University's broadcast journalism program. I'm posting this, because he makes the point that if he ran the Broncos, he'd be looking to inject more size into the offensive line, and I fundamentally agree with his thinking.  I'm kind of a QBs/WRs guy when it comes to where my real knowledge lies, but I've been doing a lof of posting about offensive line play on here.  In this case, I'm going to talk about defense in order to explain my position. Most of us know the basic difference between a 4-3 and a 3-4 defense, but for those who may not, a 4-3 defense (or 40 front as it's sometimes called) features 4 defen...

Denver’s second-round choice in the 2008 NFL Draft comes at No. 42, a position it has selected at three times in club history.  Most notably, the Broncos in 1980 selected Utah State DE Rulon Jones at that spot.Jones went on to play 129 career games (100 starts) for Denver from 1980-88 and earned Pro Bowl honors for the club in consecutive years from 1985-86. 2008 NFL Draft Primer #3 - A Brief History Of #12
2008-04-25 19:06:00
The Broncos enter the 2008 NFL Draft with the 12th overall selection. It will mark the 33rd first-round pick for the Broncos since the inception of the common draft in 1967 as well as the 12th such selection under Head Coach Mike Shanahan (1995-Pres.).  All-time, Denver has selected a player with the 12th overall pick in the NFL Draft just once. In 1971, the Broncos chose Southern California T Marv Montgomery with the 12th pick. Montgomery played six seasons with the Broncos (1971-76), appearing in 57 career games (25 starts) in a Denver uniform before finishing his career with New Orleans (1976-77) and Atlanta (1978). Below is a look at the last 10 players selected with the 12th overall pick in the NFL Draft. Among the players selected at No. 12 overall during this time were Maryland LB Shawne Merriman (2005, S.D.), a three-time Pro Bowler, and Oregon DT Haloti Ngata (2006, Bal.).   LAST 10 NFL DRAFT CHOICES AT NO. 12 OVERALLYear  Team    &nb...

Broncos Add Some Beef To D-Line, Trade For Dewayne Robertson Complete
2008-04-25 05:48:00
The Denver Broncos on Thursday acquired defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson in a trade from the New York Jets, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. In exchange, the Broncos sent the Jets a conditional pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. The Broncos also on Thursday waived center Norm Katnik. Robertson (6-foot-1, 310 pounds) is a sixth-year player who joins the Broncos after playing his first five professional seasons with the Jets. New York selected him with the fourth overall pick of the 2003 NFL Draft from the University of Kentucky. In 77 career regular-season games (75 starts), Robertson has totaled 319 tackles (188 solo), 14.5 sacks (106 yds.), four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two pass breakups.  He also has totaled 18 tackles (11 solo) in three career playoff games (3 starts). Robertson has played every game in four of his five seasons and missed only three games for his career. He saw time on 75.4 percent of the Jets’ defensive snaps in 2007, 82.5 ...

"Stop Gaps" or "The Real Deal"?

Through FA the team has covered several positions. * At SAF we picked up Manuel and McCree, * at WR we picked up Colbert, Jackson, and Parker, * and at LB we picked up K2 and Boss. Who's a stop gap, and who is a legit long term solution? The answers may surprise you! Read on... Starting at safety, let's take a brief look at our depth chart. Hamza was a 7th round pick for TB who ended up as a pleasant surprise for DEN. He can be a starter and get the job done, and he is improving. He plays the run well, and has the speed to cover passes. With three years of experience, Hamza only saw significant playing time in '07 and did a better than expected job. He was just re-signed for one year. Our other starter is the veteran Lynch, a multiple pro-bowler that is still effective in run support (and possibly in coverage), but should start slowing. An excellent series by MHR great Styg50 describes the amazing leadership, football smarts, and hard hitting values of Ly...
