Information Processing Speed
2008-04-23 14:26:00
One of the most important attributes for a NFL draftee, and one of the most difficult to evaluate, is information processing speed, or IPS. Rookies are regularly shocked at how fast things happen at the pro level. They can't read and react fast enough. Experience slows the game down. It takes about three years for most players to get up to speed. Some players, however, have a lower baseline IPS. However much the game slows down for them, it doesn't slow down as much as it does for their peers. These are your Ryan Leafs and Joey Harringtons. Much has been made of Leaf's character but Harrington has no such issues. The truth is, both were talented enough to be top college players, but they couldn't think and react fast enough at the next level. Their IPS is relatively low. Conversely some players, like Tom Brady and - ahem - Terrell Davis, don't really come into their own until they join the pros. Their IPS is unusually high. As the preceding suggests, IPS is probably mos...

Roster Breakdown - a final look before the draft
2008-04-22 21:50:00
Here's one last look at the state of the roster before the draft.  Denver has 9 draft picks and will probably add 3 or 4 free agents during or right after the draft.  So I am guessing three or four guys will get cut before the draft to make room on the roster, although I guess they could wait and see if they make any trades during the draft that open up a roster spot(s).  Denver will have to cut another set of players in July when they sign the rookie draftees. Based solely on roster numbers, Denver needs to add a kicker and a punter/kicker. They need to add at least 2 DT, 1 OT and one other OL.  Based on talent and contract situations, I will guess that Denver adds a DB and at least one more DL, possibly two. They will also add some type of offensive skill position player (RB/WR), possibly 2 as well as possibly another offensive lineman.  That makes for 6 "definite" and 3 "likely" additions and 3 "possiblities" for a total of 12.  This matches up pret...

WE HAVE A TRADE!!! The Jacksonville Jaguars, represented by MHR Favorite Claaaaas has made a trade with Jon Tollerud and the Minnesota Vikings. The details are below -- Minnesota Gets - #26 Overall Jacksonville Gets - #47, #113, #142 and #173 Claaaaas breaks it down this way - Our board was hit hard by the last couple of picks, so i don't see value enough among the currently available players. Receivers has to be extremely good for us to take him as we have invested a lot of money on the position in reloadingseason (Williamson, Porter). I don't see any pass rusher-value or corner value(Merling's injury-problems scare us a bit). DT is also a need (departure of Stroud), but i have 3 on my board, and at least one of the three will be available when we pick again. With the 26th Pick , the Minnesota Vikings and Jon Tollerud select.... via www.draftinsiders.com KENNY PHILLIPS, S - MIAMI Vikings' GM - Jon Tollerud -- The Minnesota Vikings were willing to take this cha...

Mike Shanahan, The Broncos and The Draft, A Look Back - 2001
2008-04-22 13:45:00
Up next is 2001, a year that might go down as one of the worst in Shanny's tenure.  For the second season in a row the Broncos took a DB in the first round, once again with little success.  How did the rest of the draft go?  Not much better.  Let's take a look. 1st Round -- Pick 15(15) - Willie Middlebrooks, CB (Minnesota) -- I will never understand this pick.  Ever.  People have tried to explain it to me.  I still don't get it.  Middlebrooks was an average DB and a below average school who had missed a significant amount of time because of an ankle injury to boot.  Middlebrooks has decent size, at 6-1, 200, but doesn't have great speed, nor great cover skills.  His career showed as much, with Middlebrooks fighting injury most of his rookie year.  He was active 43 of the next 48 games, playing mostly special teams.  After the 2004 season the Broncos traded Middlebrooks to the 49'ers for DE John Engleberger.  Middl...

Mike Shanahan, The Broncos and The Draft, A Look Back -- 2000
2008-04-20 19:42:00
Onward, to the 2000 draft.  The Broncos were coming off their worst season in over a decade, still grappling with the daunting task of replacing John Elway, dealing with the unknown of Terrell Davis' knee injury from the season before.  The team was definitely in a state of transition, and it was becoming imperative that Mike Shanahan starts coming up huge in the draft.  Did he hit a home run in 2000?  Let's take a look.1st Round -- Pick 15(15) - Deltha O'Neal, CB (CAL) -- The Broncos had the #9 pikc in the draft, but chose to trade down, swapping the pick with Baltimore, getting the #15 pick as well as the Raven's 2nd round pick.  At 15, the Broncos went defense, selecting Deltha O'Neal.  The  O'Neal selection is one a bit tough to gauge.    There were times O'Neal looked like he was going to be a stud.  A shut-down corner and electric return guy that was going to be a force in the NFL for a long time.  At other times, h...

The Seattle Seahawks, represented by longtime MHR Member WABronco, select.... BRIAN BROHM, QB - LOUISVILLEG.M. - WABronco -- Seattle GM Tim Ruskell justifies this pick with the following:a) Clear case of Best Player Available.  Brohm was a consensus top prospect last season and going into this season, and getting him at the end of the first makes a lot of sense.b) Making this pick gives Seattle valuable depth behind the second of their two most important players, the first being Walter Jones.  This allows them to remain competitive for longer than their present, perceived window. Also, this gives Jim Mora Jr. a young QB to mold under once his tenure begins after the following season.c) He's a good fit in the WCO.  Smart, extremely accurate pocket passer.d) WR such as Devin Thomas and Desean Jackson, as well as DE's like Calais Campbell were strong considerations here but Brohm's value wins out.  Seattle has young players at both WR and DE, and they have proven...

MHR Broncos History Lesson - 6th Edition -- Top 10 Greatest Games
2008-04-19 20:19:00
Welcome to the sixth edition of MHR's Bronco History Lesson . I have decide to be a little unorthodox this week and compile a list of the greatest games in Bronco history. This is strictly my own humble opinion, so please feel free to voice your agreement or disagreement with my selections. I also have a very special guest writer who took time out of his day to write up a riveting account of one of his all time favorite games in Bronco annals. There are many, many great games throughout Bronco history that could potentially make this list, but I mixed my own personal emotions while watching many of these games along with my knowledge of how certain games before my time changed Broncoland forever. So without further adieu, here is my Top 10. #10: October 16, 1977 at the Oakland Raiders. The Oakland Raiders were coming off a Super Bowl Championship and had won 17 straight games. The Denver Broncos on the other hand were still considered doormats by the rest of the league e...

Broncos Nab 4 Of The Top 50 Draft Steals Of All Time
2008-04-19 04:05:00
The Broncos have had their share of draft busts, like many teams.  There have also been some gems, diamonds in the rough so to speak, that have graced the playing fields of Mile High Stadium and Ivesco Field.  ESPN broke some of the best "hidden gems in draft history, listing them from 1 to 50.  Incredibly for the Broncos they have 4 members of the Top 50, including 2 of the top 6 -- 4. TE Shannon Sharpe (Savannah State) Draft ed by: Broncos, seventh round, No. 192 overall, 1990 The eight-time Pro Bowler caught 815 passes for 10,060 yards and 62 TDs during his 14-year career with the Broncos and Ravens. He was a pivotal part of three Super Bowl championships with Denver (two) and Baltimore (one). 6. RB Terrell Davis (Georgia) Drafted by: Broncos, sixth round, No. 196 overall, 1995 Injuries shortened Davis' career considerably, but he still managed three Pro Bowls and four 1,000-yard seasons (including 2,008 yards rushing in 1998), and earned two Super Bowl rings ...

THE INTERVIEW! Members of the MHR community turn to the Mile High Report to get the best, most current news, analysis, opinion, and education on the Denver Broncos.  It is also a great place to talk about the team.  Recently we've also had some incredible interviews.  Some time ago (in fact, a few months ago) I had a thought.  What if I could score an interview with the one figure who personifies what the fans of the Broncos respect and admire? I thought long and hard about it, and decided to go straight to the top.  I decided to go for a figure that is not only recognized by all of us (and still mentioned daily on MHR), but a figure that even the mighty Guru himself couldn't get an interview with (and he's gotten some pretty amazing ones). So a few months ago I sent my interview questions away and... ...you guessed it; I didn't get a reply.  Day after day passed by, and I figured the great and powerful figure I had hoped for an interview with was t...

Mike Shanahan, The Broncos and The Draft, A Look Back -- 1999
2008-04-18 16:19:00
In the 5th edition of my look back at each Broncos draft lead by Mike Shanahan and company I look at the final draft of the 20th century, and the second in a row for the Broncos following a World Championship.  It would be the first since 1982, however, that John Elway was not a part of the draft, or part of the Broncos, and the first time it really sunk in with me that #7 wouldn't be taking snaps on Sunday afternoons. Let's take a look back at the 1999 draft, and how the Broncos fared to start the post-Elway era in Denver. 1st Round -- Pick 31(31) -- Al Wilson, LB(Tennessee) -- If Terrell Davis was the best pick made by Mike Shanahan to date, Wilson would have to qualify a close second.  Wilson was drafted with the final pick of the first round and immediately became the vocal and emotional leader of the defense.  Wilson played in all 16 games during his rookie campaign, and overall has played in 125 of 128 total team games since 1999.  Wilson became a 5 tim...

Hamza Abdullah No Longer Restricted, Re-Signs With Broncos
2008-04-17 19:45:00
The Broncos officially brought back one of their own by resigning SS Hamza Abdullah to a one year contract -- Remove Hamza Abdullah from the restricted free agent market. The fourth-year safety signed his contract tender from the Broncos. Expected to open the season as the Broncos' starting strong safety, Abdullah will receive a $927,000 salary. The restricted free-agent period expires Friday and with no offer sheets from other teams coming, Abdullah decided to clear his mind and concentrate on getting ready for the 2008 season. A seventh-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2005, Abdullah was eventually signed by the Broncos and started the final eight games in 2007. He will likely begin training camp starting at strong safety next to veteran John Lynch, although both safeties will receive competition from veteran free agents Marquand Manuel and Marlon McCree. From those four safeties, Abdullah, 24, is by far the youngest and is also the fastest so he may be the on...

Jared Allen's Days In Kansas City Numbered
2008-04-17 19:41:00
According to FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer, Jared Allen won't be a Kansas City Chief for much longer -- Jared Allen's days with the Chiefs appear to be numbered. Allen told FOXSports.com that the Vikings and Buccaneers have held trade talks with the Chiefs and he anticipates a deal will get done prior to next week's draft. Allen said he had a visit set up with the Vikings this weekend in Minnesota and is tentatively scheduled to meet with Tampa Bay next week as well. The Pro Bowl defensive end is the Chiefs' franchise player, but re-signing in Kansas City will be a problem as the team is looking to stockpile draft picks. Allen said the two sticking points are working out terms of a deal with a new team and the Chiefs agreeing to compensation for a trade. If they was any doubt about the Chiefs going into full re-building mode, this should put that to rest.  One less harasser for Cutler to worry about.

Mike Shanahan, The Broncos and The Draft -- 1998
2008-04-17 18:06:00
For the first time in team history the Broncos prepared for the 1998 NFL Draft as the defending Super Bowl Champions.  That means a lot of low round draft picks, and a lot of busts and fliers.  The 1998 draft is a perfect example, and one most Bronco fans would probably like to forget. Let's take a look at each pick, and how their career ended up.  At the end, I'll grade the draft and give my opinion. 1st Round -- Pick 30(30) -- Marcus Nash, WR(Tennessee) -- Marcus Nash was a tough prospect to gauge coming out of Tennessee.  Nash was thought to have a lot of potential, would disappear for games at a time while a Volunteer.  When drafted with the last pick of the first round, Nash was expected to be the deep, down-field threat to team with Rod Smith, Ed McCaffrey and Shannon Sharpe.  It was another example of Shanny taking a flier on a guy with a lot of questions, but tremendous upside.  Unfortunately, it didn't work out for Nash, who caught al...
