With The 23rd Pick In The MHR Community Mock Draft...
2008-04-17 14:02:00 The Pittsburgh Steelers, represented by PABroncoFan, select.... JEFF OTAH, OT - PITTSBURGHG.M. - PABroncoFan -- Offensive Line is the Steeler's #1 need. I was thinking about Godser Cherilus here, but I realized that nobody took Otah. He has been generally rated higher than Cherilus, and has more of a chance in the future to play LT when Marvel Smith leaves or retires. I was looking at WR here, but when Sweed was picked, I turned to OT because Devin Thomas and DeSean Jackson are not the type of big 6'3' or taller guy Big Ben is looking for. James Hardy also was an option, but I am going to gamble that he is still there in the second round or possibly trade up or take a flyer on Adarius Bowman in the third or fourth. The Draft So Far --#1 - Miami Dolphins - DE Chris Long, Virginia #2 - St. Louis Rams - OT Jake Long, Michigan #3 - Atlanta Falcons - DT Glen Dorsey, LSU #4 - Oakland Raiders - RB Darren McFadden, Arkansas #5 - Philadelphia Eagles(via Trade w/ K.C. Broncos Sign WR Darrell Jackson
2008-04-17 02:21:00 http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_8947 201 "The Wednesday afternoon snow in Denver didn't scare off Darrell Jackson . One of the most productive NFL receivers of the past nine seasons, Jackson and the Broncos reached an agreement on a one-year deal Wednesday following a meeting with team officials at Dove Valley. "There were three or four other teams interested in Darrell, but everything aligned perfectly for us with Denver," said Brian Mooney, Jackson's agent. "The Broncos gave us the best fit from the offense they run, the coaching staff they have and the opportunity he has both short-term and long-term. Darrell is planning on playing for a while." With 487 career receptions and 50 touchdowns in eight NFL seasons, Jackson, 29, will compete with Keary Colbert for the No. 2 receiver spot. Other Broncos' receivers are Brandon Marshall, Brandon Stokley and Samie Parker. Jackson's best years were with the Seattle Seahawks. He had 87 catches for 1,199 yards in 2004 and 63 ... Draft Prospect Visit Update...Mendenhall and Cherilus
2008-04-16 17:45:00 As we all know, OT Chris Williams paid a vist to Denver last week to meet with the Broncos. Word has come out, via the Denver Post that two more highly-desired prospects are heading to Dove Valley -- Two highly touted prospects - Illinois running back Rashard Mendenhall and Boston College left tackle Gosder Cherilus - will visit the Broncos this week. Mendenhall is the type of one-cut runner the Broncos seek for their zone-blocking scheme. The Broncos would probably have to keep their No. 12 overall pick to get him. After Arkansas' Darren McFadden, Mendenhall and Oregon's Jonathan Stewart, who is recovering from toe surgery, are considered the next best running back prospects in the draft. They could trade down and get Cherilus later in the first round, or with their No. 42 overall pick in the second. More About: Update , Draft , Visit , Prospect

2008-04-16 02:58:00 The Denver Broncos on Tuesday signed free-agent punter Danny Baugher, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Baugher (5-foot-10, 194 pounds) is a first-year player who joins the Broncos after spending time with Cincinnati (2006 and 08) and New England (2006-07). Baugher entered the NFL with Cincinnati as a college free agent on May 4, 2006, after undergoing reconstructive surgery on his right knee in November of his senior season at the University of Arizona. The Bengals waived Baugher on July 31, 2006. He joined New England's practice squad on Oct. 10 where he spent the balance of the 2006 season. Mike Shanahan, The Broncos and the Draft, A Look Back -- 1997
2008-04-15 18:52:00 The Broncos once again went into trade mode for the 1997 draft, choosing quality over quantity after the playoff disappointment the year prior. at the end of the draft the Broncos had only selected 3 players, hitting pay dirt with two of them and using a draft pick to acquire another key starter. Let's take a look. 1st Round -- Pick 28(28) -- Trevor Pryce, DT/DE(Clemson) -- An adverse side effect to being a competitive team year in and year out is the realization that you are going to draft late in Round 1 every year. It adds a layer of pressure to getting it right, and for the most part Shanny has done a good job with these late first rounders. In 1997 it was Trevor Pryce, who showed instantly he was going to be a force on the line for Denver's title teams. Starting in 1998, Pryce missed 1 game in six seasons amassing 58 sacks during that time. During that time Pryce was elected to the Pro Bowl 4 times and became a dominant force on the Denver... DraftTek Mock Draft....Comments
2008-04-15 15:47:00 The team reps over at Draft -Tek are holding yet another Mock Draft, with yours truly handling matters for the Broncos. After a deal with Minnesota to gain that elusive 3rd round pick fell through(Minnesota made the deal with Buffalo at #11 instead) I was approached by the Detroit GM with a trade offer I felt was nearly as attractive -- DEN gets #15 and #87 DET gets #12 and #119 It was attractive, but I still wanted to be a bit higher in the 3rd round, especially if I had to give up a 4th rounder. Since Detroit has 2 3rd round picks, I countered with the following - DEN gets #15 and #76 DET gets #12 and #119 It is nearly the same as the proposed Minnesota trade that we have talked so much about, so I jumped at it. We gave up a 4th rounder to be 2 spots closer in the 1st round and we still get a decent 3rd round pick. Now, the only questions is who to target at 15. I will add the list of picks to date in a bit.... Right now, I want to get your thoug... More About: Comments
REPORT: Broncos Sign WR Samie Parker
2008-04-15 03:04:00 Nothing official from the Broncos , but it appears as though the Broncos have signed former Chiefs WR Samie Parker -- Though the AFC West is becoming a division of bigger receivers, the Broncos went against the grain and reached an agreement in principle with 190-pound Samie Parker of the Kansas City Chiefs. Samie Parker Parker's agent, Jordan Woy, was out of the country Monday, but he was putting the final touches on a contract for Parker. Terms of the deal weren't available, but it was close enough that Parker was making preparations to sign the contract. The 27-year-old Parker started 22 games over the past two seasons for the Chiefs. He caught 41 passes in 2006 and 24 passes in seven starts last year. Parker was a 2004 fourth-round pick of the Chiefs. At the owners meetings more than a week ago, Chiefs coach Herman Edwards said teams in the AFC West were moving to taller, bigger and more physical wide receivers because of the physical zone defenses in the division. Broncos Waive DT Antwon Burton
2008-04-15 00:44:00 Another mediocre defensive lineman is shown the door. The Denver Broncos on Monday waived defensive tackle Antwon Burton , Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. Not big news, but another example of the Broncos releasing a player former DC was high on.
Should Selvin Young be the Starter?
2008-04-14 22:55:00 **Warning: This article contains opinions The last 2 articles that I've written were similar in that they were putting numbers and statistics to the test in order to prove that Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall aren't just good, but potentially great. Moreover, I wanted to show that both players were better than most star players at the same age and experience level. This entry focuses less on the player's eventual ability to be a "great' and more on the player's ability to be on the field more often and touch the ball more. In working through my research on Brandon Marshall's YAC numbers, I came across the realization that RBs actually have much higher YAC numbers than most receivers due to catching the ball in space with a blocker or two in some cases. I was shocked to discover how high Selvin Young ranked on the list though. Not only that, but Selvin Young is keeping some pretty illustrious company. Now, I understand that this is only data from one year, but c... More About: Starter

2008-04-14 21:26:00 Chris Williams OT Vanderbilt 6'6", 315lbs, 5.13 40yd Which Legacy? One has been in the service of the king, and would like to be again. The other has flown the colors and namesake of our Broncos, in more ways than one. A dismal 2007 season has set up the targets of what is to become one of the most crucial reloading seasons of Mike Shanahan's tenure, and one by one he is knocking them down. 10 key free-agent signings, 5 positions addressed, 2 low hanging draft picks for a day-of-the-draft trade, and 1 last, glaring hole, that is meant to be filled with greatness, whether from within or from without. And from without, there is a special combination of talent, training, and timing that will present itself when Denver has an opportunity to select at #12 in the draft. It is a rare chance that Denver may not see again for years, and which will continue to write the chapters of a story that began long before this draft. But whose story will it be, and which legacy i... More About: Chris , Ryan

Broncos Close To Signing A Pair Of Wide Receivers
2008-04-14 14:24:00 Looks like the Broncos aren't done in Free Agency after all. According to the Denver Post, the Broncos are close to signing a pair of wide receivers -- The Broncos are close to signing former Kansas City Chiefs receiver Samie Parker and are deep in discussions with Darrell Jackson, the former No. 1 pass-catching threat for the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers, according to multiple NFL sources. Parker, 27, was the Chiefs' No. 2 receiver in 2005-06, averaging 38.5 catches and 547 yards. He and the Broncos could finalize an agreement today. Few receivers have a more impressive resume than Jackson, who was released by San Francisco after last season largely to avoid paying $4 million in salary and bonus. He has averaged 61 receptions in his eight NFL seasons and has three seasons of at least 1,000 yards. He caught 10 TD passes in 2006. While both are considered question marks, it is a positive sign to see the team actively trying to address a glaring hole on the rost... More About: Wide , Close , Pair , Receivers
Moving Back Might Be The Wrong Move!
2008-04-14 02:01:00 I know how all of us have been talking about moving back in the first and getting an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick. But let's slow down and look at our options again. I think everyone agrees that if we stay at #12 we will wither pick DE Harvey or OT Williams, two phenomenal talents. They can be huge difference makers on any team. So what would we do if we moved back? We all keep talking about how it will give us an extra pick, but we have never considered who we would pick once we trade down.* If we move down to 15 to 20, we would be no better off than before. There are no DTs at this value. And there is a high chance that that both Williams and Harvey would be taken by the time our turn comes up (Harvey might not make it out of the top 10, and Harvery won't get past Carolina and Chicago). Who would we pick? Conner at LB? Not likely given our reloading season moves. RB? QB? CB? DE Merling? These are the options we would have from 15 to 20, and none are good. WR? All of them are too... Mike Shanahan, The Broncos And The Draft - A Look Back, 1996
2008-04-12 20:13:00 I continue my look back at the history of the Denver Broncos in the draft under Mike Shanahan. Today I take a look at 1996, a year the Broncos made a surprise selection in the first round, from a school few had ever heard of and fewer could locate on a map. Let's take a look at each pick, and how their career ended up. At the end, I'll grade the draft and give my opinion. 1st Round -- Pick 15(15) -- John Mobley, LB(Kutztown, PA) -- The Mobley selection gave everyone a glimpse of what type of personnel guy Shanny was going to be. Un-afraid to select anyone, from anywhere at any time, the selection of Mobley brought a collective "Who, from where?" from Broncos fans. Shanny also started a trend of having no contact with players he was intent on drafting to avoid losing the guy he wanted. On the field, Mobley became a solid linebacker, collecting over 100 tackles 3 different seasons, including 139 tackles in 1997 and 118 in 1998, the Broncos back-to-back ... Bryant Gumbel Out As Play-By-Play Voice For NFLN
More articles from this author:2008-04-12 05:37:00 Chalk one up for the fans....at last! While ESPN could obviously care less what we think of the filth they protrude on Monday Night Football, the NFL Network, on the other hand, won't let Thursday Night Football go the same route. The League and Bryant Gumbel have agreed to part ways after two unlistenable years for Gumbel behind the mic. Nevermind the fact the Greg's brother had no experience calling sporting events, it appeared all too often to me that Gumbel had just as little experience watching the game as well. "I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to call NFL Network games the past two years, which was a new experience for me," Gumbel said in a statement. "But we've agreed that we'd all be better served going in different directions." It's the fans that will be better served, better served by someone calling the game of football that knows what the hell football is about.
